Its that they are good representors of subconscious thoughts realizing. Thoughts bubbling (thought bubbles hehe) to the surface if you will, like the unprompted doubts and all of those feelings that where deep now making themselves known to you as they become more present in your mind.
Celeste was my introduction to Lena Raine's music, and my god is she fantastic. I've always maintained that out of any piece of media I've seen depicting depression, Celeste is the one that got it the most right. I don't even like 2D platformers all that much, much less brutally difficult ones, but despite that I kept playing Celeste until I completed it. Not because the music was good, or because the game's art was charming, or because the controls were tight and satisfying, though all of that is true. I kept going simply because the game was...validating. For as common as depression and anxiety are, it's shockingly rare to find people who truly understand it. Also you fuckin' nailed the ending again. How the hell are you so good at that?
Quiet and Falling might be an even deeper title than you suggested. The meaning of the feather that was established at end of the previous chapter leads me to believe it's related to that (a feather quietly falling). Additionally falling is usually seen as a very panick inducing, intense moment, so the title may seem oxymoronic, but it's almost like slowly falling deeply into a pit of mental health issues. It happens slowly, but you can see yourself slowly falling deeper and deeper (think about the feeling of laying your bed at night rotting away, not thinking of anything in particular but seemingly feeling worse and worse). I think the quiet part of it expresses how you might grow numb to the feeling at some point, it all gets quiet, you are alone longing for the cold (I think this is supported by madeline waking up calmly and only slowly running away from the seeker in the mirror transition section as well as the reversed text from in the mirror). Great analysis though, this video was lovely.

As an avid Celeste enjoyer and fan of Lena Raine's music, this video was an absolute gift, and it's executed _flawlessly._ The incredible editing, and the way in which music theory concepts are broken down into super straightforward explanations while also embedding jokes as subtle nods to those already in the know - it's a great way to keep everybody engaged and it's a much-needed reminder that music theory is something that actually can be worth getting excited over :>
Now I'm in tears and have to play Celeste again... Also the B-Side version of this track is worth noting for comforting you with smooth jazz while the game relentlessly beats your ass.

I listened to quiet and falling just once prior to watching the video and I haven't played Celeste yet, so I wasn't very familiar with the track, but it's so much more than what I heard from a superficial listen. Both "quiet and falling" and "in the mirror" are beautiful pieces of art, I feel like they both perfectly show how sometimes in artistic expression less is more. It is so much more in this case... the music ceaselessly resonates within, but not in a busy way, it flows and snuggles in a corner inside the heart where it stays and keeps an unexpected but welcome company I loved your approach for this video. I mean, I always do, but here especially the musical analysis felt like it came naturally with the music instead of being a "lecture" style where one must stay alert or they'll miss your points. While I love your "lectures" I think that for this piece your choice of simpler presentation was the right one. The music evokes something in everyone of us, and you gently hold the viewer's hand without disruption while pointing out what's happening and why. It's not distracting, it works with the tone of the music. It's a touching experience, nothing grandiose nor majestic, but it somehow became more personal and intimate than what I could have ever expected and it's all thanks to your delicate approach. The 15 minutes of unveiling these two hidden gems felt like a quiet and tender hug. Thank you so much for making this video

I've been using a Mirror Temple theme as my wake up alarm for the better part of a year now. I've never played the game but I get the jist of the themes. And yea, I'm trans so it holds a special place in my heart even tho I'm terrible at platform games like this. I'm 30 seconds into the video and already getting chills.
i genuinely don't know how you extrapolate so much information from music. i listen to this soundtrack a lot, to a level that could only be described as "religious" and i will still look at this song in a completely new light after watching this video

Thank you for making this video. Celeste is near and dear to my heart (I might be echoing this from my last comment, but I feel it bares repeating.) Quite and Falling and In The Mirror are such great songs for Chapter 5 that brings the anxiety and stress to the forefront. It is very uncomfortable to listen to as it is looking in the mirror and Lena really captured. I can see why Quite and Falling is more popular because of it. At least In The Mirror can make for some interesting Halloween music (?). I hope you continue to make more videos on Celeste in the future to talk about. Stay cool and have yourself a good one.

Yes this is correct. He used the wrong chord and cadence. Incidentally, the correct Eb chord would also have modulated to the song's relative major mode, adding further to the bright tones we never get to see aspect

Slight correction though, what we see at the end of the phrase is indeed a 4-5-1 progression, except it doesn't resolve in the tonic, but the relative minor key. Which happens to be the key of the piece. Granted, it's not the most basic one, but it is nonetheless (Fm7 as an inversion of Ab6 into Bb into Eb/Cm)
We need more Celeste music stuff, all the music from it is great. Maybe something from Farewell? Or really any of them I feel like there's probably a lot that can be said about most of these
The first time i heard this piece. I was reminded of Yu Peng Chen's approach to The Chasm. The piece that i am referring to is Stories of Remote Antiquity At first i thought, Quiet and Falling was trying to tell what kind of stores buried underground... It has a sad tone but at the same time it's also hollow sounding. I couldn't get what this piece is trying to convey And now that i found your video, your take is such an eyeopener for me How this piece resembles restless mind that always circling around... How it's really similar with depression (because depression doesn't just mean that you're sad all the time, depression is mainly just the absence of emotion most of the time...). How it has major chord and how the bubbly sounding part of the piece is trying to tell. And i agree with your take on the bubbly track that feels like drowning... Now it all makes sense why it's composed that way... I personally never tried the game, but i am going to now.. Thank you, i always appreciate videos like this that's trying to explain on what the composer is trying to convey. I love music because it technically doesn't have a fixed interpretations.. So we can all interpret in our own ways. Thank you :)
Everyone on internet suggest to play this game, even my best friend, I just love the 2D platforms thanks to a Game named Vernal Edge and I played quite a lot I bought the digital version of this game and I wanna buy even the physical edition for the beautiful cover, sadly, I haven't much time for play these times so the game is still untouched but knowing, thanks to you, that you can listen OSTs like these makes me wanna move to obtain a little bit of free time for play
