Madeline becoming happy by no longer trying to deny her dark side, and finally accepting her negative stuff as a part of who she is, is such a good message. You can't just "get over" depression and anxiety and dysphoria. You have to understand that it's a part of you, something that you have to take care of. You can't fix that by just ignoring it. And the fact that accepting her dark side unlocks the triple jump, making her self love into a new ability upgrade, is SUCH A COOL IDEA AND I LOVE IT.
I’m glad you enjoyed the breakdown! Yeah I 100 percent agree. I feel like the natural response is the one Madeline has. Try to silence these feelings and push them down, but like you said it’s impossible to suppress. When they hug and get the upgrade, it’s something else :,)
"What makes Celeste even more special, is that you don't have to be LGBT to resonate with this message in some level" My brain who turned this plot into an autism analogy just nodding.
as a middle eastern trans person i really loved celeste it made me feel like im not alone especially bc i struggle with anxiety and other stuff (that i dont feel comfortable sharing here) especially bc lgbtqia+ in the middle east is a big no no i found the ending to me being a message that everything will turn for the best but i just have to fight through it (now obviously for alot of people unfortunately that isn't the case and depression anxiety etc is a part of me and many others that we can't just ignore but we can only face it and try to look at the bright side)
As a fellow trans person from the middle east who also struggles alot with anxiety, I understand what you mean :') this game gave me hope that no matter what, there is always light at the end of the tunnel (i hope things are going well for you ^-^)
Honestly, as a cis person, in my experience with the game I didn't really pick up on any of these things, but the story still really resonated with me the whole way through That's not to disregard the transness of the story though, it's extremely well-crafted and really helps convey what it's like for those who aren't trans If anything, I think the different interpretations are great, they managed to craft a story that can be interpreted in a really meaningful way to basically anybody. edit: My point still stands but nevermind on the cis thing lmao
I think that the open to interpretation narrative is one of best parts of Celeste. On a very human level we can empathize with Madeline’s plight regardless of who we are.
Great video. I got Celeste on a Steam sale in 2019, played it obsessively and beat the original release in about 8 hours, over the course of a weekend. I loved it so much that I felt compelled to write an in-depth Steam review for it, which I'd never actually done before. I just felt like there was something so special about it, that I hoped I could encourage at least one or two other people to try it. In the review, I gushed about the gameplay, the gorgeous art and music, but *most* of all, how relatable the story and character were, and how easy it was to self-insert into Madeline's story. Quote: "It may not speak to all gamers, but I think for a lot of us, Madeline's shoes might feel like a good fit. It's not very often that I find myself identifying so closely with a pixelated sprite in an indie game, but I was **right** there, for this one." That was two years before I found out (officially) that Madeline is trans. It was almost four years before I realized that I am, too. Hindsight is funny.
great video! Being trans myself, this game definitely made a huge impact on me. It's interesting to hear how different people resonated with the message. I made a video analysis on my channel as well, and I think we both discuss the game in very unique and different ways while still returning to the essence of empathy and love.
Thanks for sharing your story! Empathy and love are a language we all understand so I’m glad to see a fellow creator puttying positivity out in the world!
this is super underrated! I've tried to explain why celeste is trans to many of my friends now, and you explain it better than i ever could. great video, ty!
This game made me go on a deep self-reflective journey *one I'm still on* and I watched a walkthrough of it. Can't imagine what actually playing it would be like
Thank you for making this video! I tried Celeste because i saw so many memes about it from trans people. I couldn't keep up so I decided to watch a story summary which did well on touching on emotional self love themes. However, that alone didn't really explain why other trans people resonated so much with the game aside from covering that Madeline is cannonically trans. This video did a good job explain why trans gamers love this game so much so truly again, thank you
This story is about depression anxiety and overcoming your fears and self doubt. Not the life of trans peope. Madeline just happens to be a trans woman but that doesn't make one exceptional to mental issues. The developers wanted everyone to be able to relate to Madeline's journey.
i actually do not agree with this. to me the gameplay or the music could represent various kinds of stress you encounter in life and shouldnt be only viewed through the trans lens. the feeling of being alone, that is, socially alienated or isolated and feeling like you dont belong in your skin, anxiety and suffering are a part of universal human experience and most people could relate to such a feeling, its as primal as fear. i feel like the decision by the developers to get the game labeled as the "experience of being trans" has hindered it in its artistic weight
Once a piece of art is released to the public the artist’s intentions are irrelevant. How the audience views art is what matters. What you said about feelings of loneliness, anxiety, or social alienation are also experiences common for trans people. If you don’t appreciate the trans narrative you don’t have to interpret the game in that way. I do think a trans main character is valuable for so many people.
@@ametle The funnier part, is that I've seen this exact same comment in other Celeste videos, so this loser is so mad over Madeline being trans that they're literally spamming this comment on other Celeste videos.

"she begins to see the goth girl as the enemy"
iconic quote
Haha thanks I’m glad you liked the line
I too have oft seen my inner goth girl as an enemy
Then again, I'm plural, and she's my roommate so I just have to deal with it
All hail goth Madeline.

Cool video. Did not realize the trasness that comes from this game, but your point is made with good examples. Great video.
Yeah there is a bunch of trans imagery, I’m glad you enjoyed the breakdown!

Thanks for the kind words 🙏 I’m glad my video gave some insight
This hits so hard
Celeste is too real
The fire soundtrack was made by another trans person, Lena raine
The most common trans expiereince is unlocking double jump
When do you unlock it I don't have it yet?
@@dhalix you need to 100% Celeste

You should definitely try it sometime if you get the chance the vibes are even better when you’re the one climbing the mountain

This perfectly encapsulates my experience as a trans girl.
This video is too underrated! As a trans girl i love this!
Aww thanks so much I really appreciate it :)
This video misses the fact trans people can double jump 😊

In DLC, it is basically confirmed by a picture that Madeline is indeed a transfem.
woah so woke
i gave celeste 9/10. it would be 10/10 if there would not be any trans character

Honestly, if the mere fact that Madeline is trans, is enough for you to be angry at the game. Then I'd say you don't deserve this masterpiece.
I thought this game was cool and now I hate it.
Well, that seems like a you problem.
