>that annotation at the beginning WOOW! You don't even have to do that man but I really appreciate it and that kind of honesty and professionalism. Keep it up! :)
Wait about another month. Schrade is supposed to be releasing my SCHMBS "Priscilla" model in September. Been testing the prototype for a while now and its performance is top notch. Took it camping and chopped up an Ironwood tree with it while also having a friend use the SCHBOLO. The Ironwood ended up bending the SCHBOLO's edge in three places because of the thin grind. But the SCHMBS is still in perfect condition. Buy the time I got home it was still shaving hair off my leg. knifenews.com did an article on it if you are interested.
I know this is well and truly "old" by net standards these days (so you may not monitor comments on it anymore) but I find it easiest to show or see hollow grinds by placing a straight edge across them. This shows the level of depth in a way that's easy for the eyes to pick up. If you still happen to read comments from this old a video:) Love the channel.
I think the thing I like about this is that it's kind of somewhere between a large bowie knife and a full-size machete. A couple small tweaks one way or the other and you have one or the other. Aesthetically it's kind of cool, and there don't appear to be too many fatal flaws in its construction. I just hope that the actual production models are as good as this one. I might buy three :D
I use 1075 for large knives. Perfectly appropriate for large choppers like this. I tend to do a high, lean convex grind for big knives, for a balance between strength and cutting performance.
Its amazing how in your older videos yr accent is really noticable but in your recent videos it isnt....except for cara, her accent hasnt changed. Love your channel.
I was given one,,,,Birthday thing,,,This video and others convinced me I should adopt it. Too heavy for my belt,, I made a shoulder strap ,,,,the way to go,,, You can put a straight edge against it to see shape better. Thank you for this video, please forgive me for adding comment, this handle is big enough for me, with or without leather gloves.
Thanks for making the video. Not enough is said a about machetes. The are the truly universal tool. There are few countries where machetes are not use. You could do a whole channel on machetes. The holes are use to put a cord in, and then around your hand. If the machete slips, the cord catches it.
Great knife. I think, in resent time ,to much is make of the importance of a handgard to prevent the hand to slip to the blade but in the time or places when /where knives were most in use as a weapon the form of the handle was and is considered enough to prevent the hand from slipping(seax, highlander dirk, kukri, navaja, ...). In this case it looks fine to me for trusting.
animematt99 I'd say it's easy to simply forget mentioning it. I almost forgot it myself, that's why it's only an annotation. During the review you're more focused on the item itself, not how you got it.
***** Of course. But a lot of youtubers these days, especially video game ones and journalists, seem to forget to mention that they are being paid to do the review (making it a commercial) or that they have financial reasons to ensure said game/product is successful/
animematt99 Right. If you're actually paid for the review I agree it's important to disclose that. Although I also see the drawback that many people automatically jump to the conclusion that a paid review is always biased and a "bought opinion", which of course is not necessarily the case.
Seriously, if it weren't for my requirement for guards on machetes/swords/fixed knives I would get this by nearly any means necessary, I just love it. Looks incredible!
***** It seems like a very small guard (maybe 2cm to 3cm) made of the same metal as the blade, just barely pokeing outwards as a minor guard for better grip would be sufficient to prevent the hand from slipping. Also it seems like it would help keep the blade in the sheath a bit better, due to the mechanism used, and as seen at 9:15 How would you recommend the walnut finish be grippier than the smooth side? Ribbed? Textured? How could it be done to preserve the material choice, but also maintain grippiness through intense use over the years?
I'm an Eskrimadore- (one that practices the Filipino Martial Arts) I can assure you that a guard is not all that necessary, even for thrusting. It's all in how you learn to use it. I am aiming to get one of these as a multi purpose knife. If I needed to use it offensively, I would treat it like a Barong, which also has no guard. Thanks for the review. I'm looking forward to having one soon.
Thanks for the review. I'm gonna mention something that you didn't include. Because owning a knife is about living with it, and i see something that could have an effect on that. Part of living with a knife is sharpening it. And if one looks at other knives, take a typical bowie knife for example, the end of the cutting edge closest to the hand usually terminates with a little notch into the body of the blade. Or the entire cutting edge is proud of the body (further out from the spine than the part that becomes the tang). This is so that a flat sharpening surface with square corners (most sharpening means) can slide over the full length of the blade. This Mah-Chete doesn't have that, and it will cause all kinds of difficulty when trying to sharpen.
well i just bought it, I'm thinking of either wielding or riveting a simple guard on there. thanks for the review this is pretty much what i was looking for
Very good review, you said everything that needed to be said. Considering that I don't have a machete (or something close to that) yet, I will probably get myself one of these.
for the vlogs its fine but for this kind of close up work 1080p would be very nice(ps i know nothing about video recording) although i am a recording engineer and would really recommend getting a decent mic or at the least a pop shield.
liam montgomery Actually this video *was* recorded and uploaded in 1080p. Maybe the HD option was not available yet when you watched because of UA-cam processing the video? 1080p can now be selected for this video.
Nice lookin blade. I think it could do with either a burned or filed in pattern to help with grip, then a sand down to knock off those hard edges. Might have to look into it, thanks for the review skall.
A question for you Skall. As far as knives, sabers, machetes, and claymores; what would be your ideal steel grade for the different types of weapons, and why? What are the pros and cons in three small, medium, large, and extra large.
Hey skall. Something I've noticed in a lot of your videos is difficulties in showing subtleties like whether the grind is concave. For something like this, look to changing up the lighting you have in the room rather than just adjusting the focus. Lighting is going to play a much bigger role in showing off fine detail like that. Hope this helps. :)
I kinda like the appearance and stuff on this thing, but specially I like its functionality. A good tool is not necessarily the prettiest (you do pay extra for materials and aesthetics) but it has to be functional and reliable, and this one seems to be.
I enjoyed this video. You mentioned batoning. What would you consider the best large knife for batoning? I find that I don't like splitting wood with my hatchet.
I definitely like how you separate the tests and the review. It keeps the videos from bloating too much. On another note, why the hell does CRKT give their knifes such cheesy names?
I love your reviews, you aren't afraid to show a blades weaknesses as well as the strengths, while not seeming like a person who likes only the most expensive items, or certain brands. Also the blade does look very nice to me, I like to see the rough looking forging marks, or hammer marks, outside of the hollow ground edge. As far as the notes at the end I did see you point out the short comings, in your opinion, and your reviews seem to be fairly objective. Also for a machete I would expect a larger blade, I see that it is quite thick blade, but not very long, mebbe a plus, mebbe a minus, IDK, I generally look for a longer machete, but during a long hike, perhaps a longer version would prove to be more cumbersome.
I like it! Love the rustic hammered finish and walnut handle. I agree that I wished they would have included a guard in the design. I'd be willing to buy it with an extra $30 (USD) on the price if they included a guard. Maybe they will come out with a redesign at some point.
The point certainly has practical applications. Wrap the blade in leather with an inch or two of point showing, and you can do finer carving tasks with it. Thats just one example. Not just for stabbing.
Hello Skallagrim, I wanted to ask on your opinion about the site/group called "Hurstwic". I am intersted in some viking martial arts/techniques. So, have you got any experiences with them? And, could you please recommend me some other sources, if you know any, please? Thanks!
It's lighter than an axe, by far, yet can do a lot of what an axe can. It's heavier than a knife, by far, yet can do a lot of what a knife can. The handiest fire building thing I ever saw, no other tools required, hit a rock with this and sparks fly
Kutos to you, Skall and CRKT. This is how it should be. Honest, constructive criticism. Money should not buy an opinion. Total praise, although awesome doesn't help a product with improvement.
Between the use of 1075 steel, the hammer finish, the appearance of the grind, and the simple wooden handle scales, this looks a lot like a Condor knife. Any chance CRKT subcontracted out the manufacture of these blades to Condor? Country of origin may help to answer the question.
they make them straps really tight. Mine was like that also. After you use it a while it fits better cause it stretches-which is why they make them so tight...
I agree with the fact that a finger guard might be desirable, specially when your hands start to get tired...to be quite hontes it seems to me like an evolved sax. Still,in my humble opinion it looks like a handy camp tool.
Oh my Skally...that is one sweet chopper :D I really like the handle actually - looks like a good forward slanted grip. The sheath is garbage though. But hey it would be sexy with a nice kydex one!
Ok, so about HC Steels... 1075, 1095, 1045, whatever. The real differences between those is that some of them require a specific soak time during heat treating in order to attain the optimum hardness during the quench. Otherwise there are slight variations in toughness, flexibility, and edge retention. That being said I'd love to have a machete like this, I have a Cold Steel Barong machete and that thing is awesome, but the shorter design of this one appeals to both my eye and my arm.
Skallagrim, I was wondering if you had any one handed axe, shield and/or dirk/long dagger recommendations? Wanted to practice a modified form of scottish warband combat.
The blade looks kinda cool, the "hammered effect" on the coating is something you won't see every day on a machete, and the shape of the blade itself is pretty nice. However, the wooden handle doesn't fit this machete. Like you said, it kinda looks a large kitchen knife - although it's so big that you probably could use it to carve a grizzly on Thanksgiving ^^. I think a polymer handle with a slightly more ergonomic shape and a proper texture for a better grip would have been better.
Hey Skallagrim, first nice video. :) I have a question, cam you make a video about the mechanism and the functionality of a fictional weapon, the whip blade? That would be really nice :) Sorry if my english isnt the best, but its not my native language..
Wearing "work" gloves will add friction and may create a better fit. I wonder if one could slightly stretch the material on the strap so that it would eventually work. Many materials shrink and expand due to the temperature.
Hey Skall, I was just wondering if you would consider posting your stance on the Charlie Hebdo terrorist attack in Paris. Idk if you're looking for more things for your philosophy/ rant vids but I'm sure many of your subs would like to hear more about this.
what is there t say about it other then: the perps are pieces of shits? (and as a religious person, I´d add: dumb fearful shits.. you cantc hant god is bigger but tehn proceed killin people over fucking pictures. either god is bigger, so he diesnt need two boys to murder for him because he is fucking bigger than this shit, or hes not-which would be a sad admition for those two shits
As a French guy, I don't think that would be a good idea here. It would quickly go into politic and religious flamewars in the comments, and Skall said he wants to avoid politics on this channel. And I think it's pretty obvious the rest of the world feels bad for us right now. Aside the tragedy, some of those guys were icons for decades, and their work was seen in much more things than Charlie Hebdo. There will be a void left in french press and comics landscape. I prefer everyone to pay a simple and humble hommage to the 13 victims by keeping on and freely express themselves, with no fear or consideration towards those murdering scums.
Skallagrim: How's that handle as far as blisters go? I've seen numerous times that the curved handle like on the Bidor parangs keep you from getting blisters (don't know what that shape is called).
is there any chance you could possibly do a review on the timber rattler ranch king i know this is asking a bit much but its a 20-30 dollar knife with many good reviews and i was hoping it could turn out to be one of those few decent cheap knives you find
Not to bother you ask Skall and not that this has do with the video, but what do you like better an arming sword or a long sword? I'm asking this because I'm deciding ether to get.
i like the way it looks alot, like something your dad would own forever and have some weird story about how cool and useful it was 20 years ago.
>that annotation at the beginning
WOOW! You don't even have to do that man but I really appreciate it and that kind of honesty and professionalism. Keep it up! :)
Darkwraith Raziel I just like to be open and honest, especially in reviews.
Thank you. You'd be surprised how something as simple as that is so hard to find nowadays. :)
I'm on mobile so I can't see the annotation. What'd it say?
He was just disclosing that he was not sponsored or paid to review the knife. That's something I really look for in people who review anything.
Darkwraith Raziel Oh, alright, cool. Thanks for letting me know.
This actually looks really awesome for the price, so many good looking knives coming out now in every category.
two legged animals.... You don't have to be nice about it, Skall. we all know the horrors of birds.... *shudders*
wasn't that a t-rex

Yeah, gotta watch out for 'dem 'roos. They be vicious!
+Skallagrim do you have to oil knives like this just like swords? I'm not that much of a expert
+Skallagrim Hi Skall. This one or the schrade bolo? The wife says I am only allowed one.
Wait about another month. Schrade is supposed to be releasing my SCHMBS "Priscilla" model in September.

knifenews.com did an article on it if you are interested.
+DeadBoysTwo. Went there, didn't see it.
i love the simplicity of it, it's a beautiful blade.
I do like this design. Now... can I justify *another* machete? :)
no
There is not such thing as too many knives
Victor T The wisdom of Logan Ninefingers.
Justify to who? There is no justification needed for a good blade, my friend.
tetsubo57 You can always justify another machete. :D

Video editing feedback: I think slight ambient in the background makes it feel a LOT less akward.
I appreciate your honesty with your viewerbase.
TheAoihoshi Usually people seem to hate any kind of ambient music.
So... This beautiful piece costs LESS than a FUCKING VIRTUAL KNIFE! Good going, CS:GO.
xXInfXx yeah but you cant kill anyone with this not even virtual people lol
Lord yasha You can kill anyone with anything if you try hard enough.
Lord yasha I won't be raped if I tell them I was brought in for armed murder with a Mah-Chete.
xXInfXx just take the soap from the floor and you will discover it

You can put a straight edge against it to see shape better.
Thank you for this video, please forgive me for adding comment, this handle is big enough for me, with or without leather gloves.
A very nice looking tool in my opinion. A good detailed review as well, thank you. :)
I've had several CRKT knives over a few years, and I've never had a bad thing to say about them.
Same here
If this gets released close to me, im gonna consider buying one of theese.
Thanks for making the video. Not enough is said a about machetes. The are the truly universal tool. There are few countries where machetes are not use. You could do a whole channel on machetes. The holes are use to put a cord in, and then around your hand. If the machete slips, the cord catches it.
I love that curved butcher knife design.
Love this big blade Mah-here. Crkt makes really cool and great blades. Great video and testing. It's on my list.

Love the wood handle and exposed tang. It a 10 in looks.
well i just bought it, I'm thinking of either wielding or riveting a simple guard on there. thanks for the review this is pretty much what i was looking for
skall, i just want to point out that right now, your channel is growing really fast. Just sayin'. IMWATCHINGYOU
Definitely like it after seeing the demonstration. Looks neat too.
I like the big belly with the sharp clip point. Reminds me of a Hudson Bay pattern.
Very good review, you said everything that needed to be said.
Considering that I don't have a machete (or something close to that) yet, I will probably get myself one of these.
before i didint really understand why you were so focused on a new camera but with this video i can see where you are coming from
liam montgomery Yeah, I'm really not happy with the poor image quality of my current camera.
***** On this note, I messaged you Skall over video equipment recommendations!
for the vlogs its fine but for this kind of close up work 1080p would be very nice(ps i know nothing about video recording) although i am a recording engineer and would really recommend getting a decent mic or at the least a pop shield.
liam montgomery Actually this video *was* recorded and uploaded in 1080p. Maybe the HD option was not available yet when you watched because of UA-cam processing the video? 1080p can now be selected for this video.
Louis Kitchen Yes, I got it and have replied to it.
You asked for a friggin essay ese
I really like the look of this blade. Seems very sturdy and efficient. I may consider getting it, I'm in need of a decent outdoors knife!
Two questions:
What kind of steel is armor generally made of?
What is the difference between spring and high carbon steel?
Great knife. I have been beating mine with a baton for months. Great knife. Add a forced patina with vinegar for protection.
Hey skall. Something I've noticed in a lot of your videos is difficulties in showing subtleties like whether the grind is concave. very nicely shaped blade, very unique.
Love it !
can't wait to see it at Shot
I enjoyed this video. You mentioned batoning. What would you consider the best large knife for batoning? I find that I don't like splitting wood with my hatchet.
I definitely like how you separate the tests and the review. It keeps the videos from bloating too much.
On another note, why the hell does CRKT give their knifes such cheesy names?
tefras14 I don't know. I guess cheesy names are easier to remember? :)
Because...Marketing
PMO SwagAttack Mah-keting*
lol
Because they are a design company
I love your reviews, you aren't afraid to show a blades weaknesses as well as the strengths, while not seeming like a person who likes only the most expensive items, or certain brands. Also the blade does look very nice to me, I like to see the rough looking forging marks, or hammer marks, outside of the hollow ground edge. As far as the notes at the end I did see you point out the short comings, in your opinion, and your reviews seem to be fairly objective. Also for a machete I would expect a larger blade, I see that it is quite thick blade, but not very long, mebbe a plus, mebbe a minus, IDK, I generally look for a longer machete, but during a long hike, perhaps a longer version would prove to be more cumbersome.
it would be a great kitchen knife . the design is fantastic i cant wait to make 1
I like it! Love the rustic hammered finish and walnut handle. I agree that I wished they would have included a guard in the design. I'd be willing to buy it with an extra $30 (USD) on the price if they included a guard. Maybe they will come out with a redesign at some point.
To check the depth of a hollow grind ,put a straight edge across te top of it and see the light underneath it.
Thats a badass little knife. Im giving away a bow and arrow on my channel as well!
Just one arrow?
Paul Alvarez Yeah but hey man, good arrows cost 17 bucks a piece, not cheap

Gingium you geting ripped the fuck off if your paying 17 for 1
Atlas Outlast Fiberglass arrows stink, and those are for compound bows. I shoot traditional :)
Seems like a must buy for me when it gets here.
Looks like it'd make a good survivalist woodworking tool for carving & shaping of wood.
can't wait. mines arriving tomorrow knock on wood (hopefully with this beast tomorrow :D)
The point certainly has practical applications. Wrap the blade in leather with an inch or two of point showing, and you can do finer carving tasks with it. Thats just one example. Not just for stabbing.

Thanks!
I can see the concave grind from the way the light reflects off of it.
i must say that is a very lovely blade i like the design and style of the blade :)
LOOKS LIKE A GORGEOUS KITCHEN KNIFE.
I'm wanting this thing. I'll probably put a false edge on it once I get it, though, since I'd like to make it more stabbing oriented.
It's lighter than an axe, by far, yet can do a lot of what an axe can.
It's heavier than a knife, by far, yet can do a lot of what a knife can.
The handiest fire building thing I ever saw, no other tools required, hit a rock with this and sparks fly

I'm gonna have to buy one of these for work.
Bloody nice review. Excellent form on the slicing. Looked kewl as hell !!!!!! I will take 2 please lol
DAMN! Thats beautiful. Im gonna buy one of those ASAP!
Oh my Skally...that is one sweet chopper :D I really like the handle actually - looks like a good forward slanted grip. The sheath is garbage though. But hey it would be sexy with a nice kydex one!
I like it. If I see one for $60-70 I'll definitely pick one up. $100 is a bit much considering the competition.
looks somewhat like Aragorn's knife in LOTR
My thoughts exactly.
I have a mighty need
I like that a lot. Lighter than my Kukri, but looks very capable.
Ok, so about HC Steels... 1075, 1095, 1045, whatever. The real differences between those is that some of them require a specific soak time during heat treating in order to attain the optimum hardness during the quench. Otherwise there are slight variations in toughness, flexibility, and edge retention. That being said I'd love to have a machete like this, I have a Cold Steel Barong machete and that thing is awesome, but the shorter design of this one appeals to both my eye and my arm.
this is something Daniel Day Lewis's character would use in "gangs of New York."
We trust you Skall. You don't need to spend 30 seconds trying to gett the camera to focus on the hollow grind. We'll take your word for it. 😜
A hollow grind for that type knife wont hold its sharpness very well(I am a bladesmyth). And the handle what is going on with that?
Skallagrim, I was wondering if you had any one handed axe, shield and/or dirk/long dagger recommendations? Wanted to practice a modified form of scottish warband combat.
Gorgeous blade!
I can't help but pronounce CRKT as "Cricket"
Very nice review,thumbs up 👍👍
You know, this makes me curious what you feel about Jason Voorhees' ridiculously huge machete. XD lol
do you know a better opion against the curved blade. What could be the next good Option?
Great Video!
Cool! To sharpen a knife like that all a person needs is two ceramic rods and a honing steel. 5-10 min to get it razor sharp!!
Wow, nice blade, i forged a knife exactly like this the last summer, but bigger very mutch bigger and nice video thanks :D
I have a question, cam you make a video about the mechanism and the functionality of a fictional weapon, the whip blade?
That would be really nice :)
Sorry if my english isnt the best, but its not my native language..
This thing looks badass !
Wearing "work" gloves will add friction and may create a better fit.
I wonder if one could slightly stretch the material on the strap so that it would eventually work. Many materials shrink and expand due to the temperature.
Great review Skall. Less great machete.
I prefer everyone to pay a simple and humble hommage to the 13 victims by keeping on and freely express themselves, with no fear or consideration towards those murdering scums.
what big knife do you recommend for basic wilderness survival? i.e. self defense, skinning, wood chopping. could you make a video on this?
Skallagrim: How's that handle as far as blisters go? I've seen numerous times that the curved handle like on the Bidor parangs keep you from getting blisters (don't know what that shape is called).
Hey Skall, have you heard about TBS knives? If not, I think there pretty good.
Looks like a Seax / scramasax.
If the price is right (considering its just a machete) then I'll be getting one of these for customising
It's almost like a parang but with a thrusting tip. The look of it makes me think of a good horror movie or game villain weapon
WColdblooded357W Looks like a seax.
man i love this blade
is there any chance you could possibly do a review on the timber rattler ranch king i know this is asking a bit much but its a 20-30 dollar knife with many good reviews and i was hoping it could turn out to be one of those few decent cheap knives you find
Not to bother you ask Skall and not that this has do with the video, but what do you like better an arming sword or a long sword? I'm asking this because I'm deciding ether to get.
