This man really just said, "Alvin & the Chipmunks are the original vtubers" & all I can do is sit here like I've just seen God.
We just witnessed the birth of a new meme
Four words for you: Jem and the Holograms. ua-cam.com/video/lkQE5wuBFeY/v-deo.html
Now I can’t help but imagine Alvin and the chipmunks making their vtuber debuts LOL
Toni the Tiger did,so I wouldnt doubt it
Betty Boop predates them
A singer, inspired Anime
I don't know where I expected this to go, but alvin and the chipmunks sure wasn't it
Also that intro kicked me right in the nostalgia thanks for that
theirs lots of older stuff they are just Niche early Vtubers existed(Not under any tag) before the Vtuber boom as well.
Alvin and the Chipmunks count by technicality but they are so far off from the rising star of Vtubers ans incredibly far off from the modern vtuber
Annoying Orange is the prime example of a Vtuber similar to Kizuna Ai in concept and execution.
he forgot max headroom, the actual first vtuber in the 80s if you are using these achromatic terms that any virtual person is defined as a vtuber
also he conflicts "virtual singer" with "virtual tuber"
which is different,
About Eilene, I kept in contact with her but after health issues and failed projects the company went under and she retired. There was no public announcement. Eilene doesn't reply to messages anymore I don't think she will come back... So everyone just works on their own now. Moe keeps making stuff at her new raven manor channel.
Fuuuck thats sad to hear. Let her know she's not forgotten.
I mean, i know you said she won't respond to messages anymore but :(
@@DepressedNousagi will try!
Rip
So sad. I wonder if that means then that the Syfir group and Yomemi are done too?
Careful buddy, you might develope an upload schedule
Still waiting for the Tsukino Mito story
i want to know more about how Nijisanji started and become one of the most famous vtuber agency
That's a good idea.👍
I want this yeah.

I didn't expect for Alvin and the chipmunks and Harry the hamster to make an appearance in origins of Vtubers but here we are.
Are they the original holorodents?
if you mean holographic rodents? then yes 😆

"Its a good UA-camr we watch, brother."
"The best."
"May he never change."
"And may he never change us."
Welp, this is getting oddly poetic.
VTubing and its technology has come a long way for sure.
I'm glad to see Ami mentioned here since I greatly admire her skills with content creation, and thank you for mentioning me along with Eilene Academy as well!
I can't believe I'd see Moe again here. We will miss Eilene, I remember discovering her and soon following your stuff 4 years ago, you guys were the ones that helped through my first years of junior high school. Really wish you guys the best!
Fancy seeing you here, Moe. I've been a fan of you ever since your debut on Eilene's channel.
Ain't no way the one and only commented here
I can't believe it
it's always cool to look back at how a community, especially the vtuber community, got this big. Love the vid
Imagine this being thought in school in the near future as a subtopic. Globalization-> pop culture-> Japan-> history of VTubers. If this community grows even bigger that is, or the publisher decided to add it.
Isn't big enough I think, but will be interesting to see.
It all starts with an archduke getting shot
@@eldersun5110 Or maybe in this case, all begin when a certain queen of england become a vtuber
Who the fuck want to thought these in school in the first place loooool
@@crowzet0 We learn renaissance figures in history. Some art class teach about 80-90's artist. So depending on how dominating streaming industry gonna be, it might, _might_ get into textbooks one day....
Tbh, I also think that's very unlikely tho
Figuring out the taxonomy of vtubers is as complicated as figuring out the taxonomy of dinosaurs.
I miss the Eilene Family so much. Watching their videos helped me through college. The absurdity and the unhinged nature of their vids was top notch. Also the cute ending dancing sequence was nice too.
Do they still exist, or did they get wiped?
@@Mernom with how much her other projects ended up cutting connections with Eilene, I am not surprised most of her original shitpost are lost
Mostly do to her using the channel that had her videos for those projects ( Mirai Akari was originally Eilene JP channel, as she had one where she did add subtitles in english ( which laler became Natsumi Moe Ch, which also is an indie now )
@@Mernom If you scroll down to the old videos on Natsumi Moe's old channel you can still see plenty of Eilene videos.
This video left out another major thing that was pivotal in the formative years of VTubing and the culture surrounding it (and this could be the topic of another video, as it is a huge rabbit hole in itself) - the launch of VRChat in 2014!
Many indie VTubers both in Japan and overseas started as streamers and short-form content creators using VRChat avatars before Live2D avatars became the norm; VRChat was conveniently without the huge barriers to entry that surrounded Kizuna AI and the tech of other big-name VTubers of the day. Zentreya was putting out content using an earlier design of the redhead avatar way back in 2017, for example.
Researching the VRChat culture of the time, and how it forked into modern VTuber culture is definitely something worth investigating! Lots of weird stuff ranging from Earth-chan, Kitsunemusume, Ugandan Knuckles, the past lives of some really big names, the bizarre deep dark abyss of the VRChat Legends wiki, and more!
Peeps also forget that Hololive was really invested in VRChat in the early days too - they were pushing Ankimo avatar DLC and Roboco-san was an avid VRC player back in the day. Most of the past streams were lost in the great purge of 2019, but her 24 hour endurance stream was huge.

I think of VTubing as a kind of digital/virtual puppetry.
Implying Jim Henson being the granddaddy of it all with his physical puppetry
Just the fact that Gorillaz is now canonically part of Vtuber history makes this video amazing
Thank you for mentioning Ami Yamato! I watched her years ago and she inspired me to get into VTubing (although with MMD) I never fully dove into it but I’d still love to properly pursue that one day!
Nastsumi Moe aka Raven Manor redebuted as Shiori Novella
Ah... Yes... Eilene. Or, aS I called her in my own video about Vtubers... Alien.
FYI, Eilene is still going. The wiki has a link to a new channel where she's got a manga being made, and she's making weird videos, out of her weird manga.
i think we should all have some respect for the original “vtuber” the annoying orange and the mario teaches typing mario head
Yeah but that's a whole can of worms as far as what is a vtuber because its far too broad of a subject to know what exactly is one.
I'm still confused as to where the whole "Annoying Orange is a proto-VTuber" comes from. It was non-interactive animation that was basically the second coming of Clutch Cargo (look Clutch up here on YT, and you'll see what I mean...and how creepy that 'style' of animation can get).
Annoying Orange is not a VTuber. The definition of a VTuber is "an online entertainer who uses a virtual avatar generated using computer graphics.", Annoying Orange uses real life human eyes and lips so he doesn't count.
@@CarlFox Well, you see. Before Nijisanji, vtuber is thought to must have a 3D model like Kizuna Ai. There was much debate on whether or not Live2D is 'vtuber' or not with the opposition saying "If Live2D are vtubers, then so is Annoying Orange!".
You can still feel the effect of this division in how Nijisanji talents refer to themselves as 'livers' instead of 'vtubers'.
Long story short, Annoying Orange as a vtuber is a whataboutism argument against non-3D vtubers, now made as a joke.
Sometimes I look back at the days when I was just watching Eilene's shitposts, Kizuna Ais videos, and Nekomiya Hinata's PUBG gameplays when I didn't expect all of this to become this big
Oh shit Natsumi Moe was a throw back. Rabbit hole goes deep
Man i remember when my general idea of anime was literally Hatsune Miku when i was like 5 years old or something i used to have so many things Miku themed it was really great and i am honestly kinda happy/proud that i got into anime and VTubers very early it makes me feel happy on how far they've gone and successful they've became
Man I'm glad you've included a part about utaite. They are the reason I personally found vtubers. Back then I didn't even call any vtubers as vtubers but rather just utaite because I mainly enjoyed the songs and covers from a lot of them.
Thanks for summarizing the Eilene family, depressed bunny man. It's a bit sad that Eilene couldn't join the ranks of Holo and Niji now despite her the one who pushed shitposting as an appeal for vtuber (hence why I considered her as Coco and Haachama's predecessor).
Btw are you planning to make a video about Game-bu incident? It was a big incident of its time (and the reason why companies don't substitute the person behind vtuber character) but new vtuber fans might not be aware about it.
I miss eilene family they had the most messed up and funny skits until she gave up and just spammed soulless shilling ads then completely deleted her channel
Eilene was like the coco before coco
Man Everytime i see my Nousagis bros doing videos like this, you open my eyes
I remember that videoclip from Gorillaz, liked it at times because of the looks.
I miss Eilene. The edgy humor she had was quite refreshing.
Shame about the rebranding, she's still one of my favourite vtuber.
Yeah, I fell down into vtuber rabbit hole because of Eilene. I even join the patreon and stuff to support her project. Sad to see her not keep on riding the wave until today. Will be missing her
Kizuna AI may have started the whole thing in the real world and made what was science fiction a reality. But keep in mind that vtubing was once a mad concept in science fiction at one point as shown in works such as Bruce Willis's Bruno the Kid.
harry the hamster is my new oshi
Hi Pippa :D
Nousagi is officially vtuber education channel now xD
"Lemme educate you."
Pls no politics.
Crazy to think that the pioneer of English VTubers is now in Hololive
"It was Kizuna Ai who started the Vtuber indu-"
Annoying Orange: EXCUSE YOU???
Max Headroom and Robot Idol/Lady from Metropolis(1927) watching this from afar intensively.
Annoying Orange is not a VTuber. The definition of a VTuber is "an online entertainer who uses a virtual avatar generated using computer graphics.", Annoying Orange uses real life human eyes and lips so he doesn't count.
Eilene has supposedly worked with cover corp on the Hologra animation series of videos. I haven't found any substantial evidence corroborating this claim though.
If there's no clearer evidence I'm guessing this stems from similarity in animation and the Yomemi crossover episode?
Hologra call lot vtuber and eilene is one of early collaboration
the opening its not cringe? its a masterpiece XD [IS THAT A Assasin creed referance in 2022?!?!]
I have been enlightened.
Honestly still so weird to think about how I was watching Ai's very first videos thinking it was just a cool gimmick with no conception whatsoever that it would blow up to become an entire massive industry. I remember being blown away when I went to Japan in like 2017 and saw her products for sale in Akihabara thinking how crazy it was that Ai managed to be popular enough to have merch because that was beyond the peak of how mainstream I thought a virtual youtuber would ever be. It's insane how much the industry exploded since then.
For me, Vtubers are quintessentially a live performance by a human being. That, even more than the virtual avatar, whether 2D or 3D, is what sets them apart from other forms of entertainment. Annoying Orange is more like a form of animation, not live performance. Likewise, Anime is clearly animation and not live performance. Miku is a procedurally animated computer character, not a human performer. Kizuna AI is a Vtuber because many of her videos were recorded live performances or live broadcasts.
They're just a normal streamer with jpeg bro
Why does it have to be live
Why live though? Most of the early vtubers that went massive and started the trend (Kizuna, Shiro, Akari, Nekomasu) posted videos regularly and only went live on occasion. It’s really only until Nijisanji and Hololive started getting popular that vtubers started shifting towards livestreams.
I hope you do cover Eilene more in depth. She was a gigachad. For those who don't know, she was the amongst the first in the community to have all her videos subbed in english. If I remember correctly, she subbed them herself.
I love how you experiment with intros. This adds a flavor to all the vids and a recognizing trait to your channel.
The Wizard of Oz was the first Vtuber
The start and end of the same era of God's and controlers
btw, moemi (but not yomemi) is still active on youtube, she streams at the channel 萌実ちゃんねる。
I miss Eilene, they have a really big ambition to create their own anime show and I can really vibe with their comedy.
One of the most influential creators in the anime industry, Kawamori Shōji pioneered transforming robot toys, designing a number of robot toys in Takara's early 1980s Diaclone series in Japan, such as Convoy, which became internationally famous as Optimus Prime, after the US's Hasbro licensed the Diaclone and Microman transforming toy lines from Takara and rebranded them as Transformers. Kawamori created the first virtual idol, Lynn Minmay, in his 1982 TV anime series Macross, following her up with virtual idol Sharron Apple in his 1995 OVA series Macross Plus. Kawamori's impact on global culture can't be underestimated.
Oh yeah I totally forgot he might of been the first person to actually put vtuber as an idea and gave it visual form.
The last part about what Vtubers are Sure Slaps Silvervales's Interview right In her Face doesn't It? Lol
I remember the time when Azuma Lim did a horror collab with Soda good times and when there was I think only 8 vtubers.
"Arms were made to be cut"

You didn't mention the Mario Head where Charles Martinet first voiced Mario (and Luigi).

i was drinking and when it reached the part of hary the hamster i chocked im not joking, but i still cant believe how far vtubers have come
This video answers all the "umm actually" nerds with an even deeper history and meta that they even know. Take that.
These are like the weird pre cambrian fossils that could be multicellular life but nobody is sure, but ultimately have perhaps the most important role in the tree of life because without them there would be nothing.
Very interesting, thanks for the infos !

Vtubing has really come far, hasn't it?
Well apparently its been as far back as the Playstation one/two era
gotta say, Nousagi been on a roll these past videos. This son of a gun don' miss
In Russia we have Orc Podcaster and Ninel, both started at 2011. Even if now Orc Podcaster follows the vtuber formula, he does not consider himself as one.
Ninel was just a dude with 2D avatar, basically the same situation as annoying orange. Orc podcaster can be considered vtuber in a broad sense, but he just used the rigging program before vtubers were even a thing
@@starless267 I don't agree. Ninel was a virtual character, not just an avatar.
The problem that VTuber is a pretty vague term: being derived from «virtual youtuber», only very few VTubers are actually real youtubers, they are streamers. Ninel was actually even closer to original meaning than VTubers nowadays.
@@RanmaruRei Annoying orange had a character too. Vtubers are specifically characters with rigged 2.5D or 3D models. not just anime characters making UA-cam videos
@@starless267 Kizuna Ai's videos were originally animated in MMD with voice acting. And you totally dismiss PNGTuners then.
@@RanmaruRei Kizuna AI had 3D model though and PNGtubers, while similar to vtubers, are completely different thing
You did it! You finally did it! I can finally rest my mind!
Speaking of Vocaloid, Calne Ca, one of the derivatives of Miku, is actually a VTuber~
Calne Ca no, Ca (Shiie) yes. Ultimately they're deemed as different characters
@@karayura10 Oh, thanks for correcting me!
I remember eilene announcing about getting sponsored by some streaming company and shifting the streaming content there(with occasional streaming on yt) then after that I have no idea what she and her family has been doing.
Glad to see Eilene being represented. Gone but never forgotten.
Thank you for talking about MEIKO. Yes, Miku is the most popular VOCALOID but without MEIKO, Miku might have never existed.
Speaking of VOCALOID:
There is a Private VOCALOID named: Anri Rune
Anri Rune was introduced as a virtual announcer for Fuji TV on October 1, 2012. She hosted 2 programs but due to low views, they dropped it. Years later, they decided to make her into a Private VOCALOID. She only one one song and I miss her.
Vtuber community is the only great rabbit hole that I fell inside and it's hella welcoming like I fell on a soft trampoline.
Wait, am I an Eilene family offshoot now? 😮
Eyyy our French og vtuber Deat 's!
I kinda miss Eilen and the gang, they were an edgier alternative to the Big 4 at their peak
its crazy to think that Shiori is formerly a legendary vtuber too lmao
i used to watch Moe and Yomemi a lot in the past from there also found out about Senzawa, AI and some other legend in that era (also there's 1 i forgot the name, she is a japanese cat vtuber who plays pubg a lot)
haha i remember seeing the 1st time Hologra included Yomemi in one of their older episodes as a guest, very unexpected and interesting
sad what to see happen to the Group of Eileen. and with the Current Drama ongoing regarding the person, i don't know how did it come to that sadge (and with how both party are having a different Statement its so confusing)
anyway, im just happy now that Moe Get out of that circle and reincarnated as Shiori before things went heated up rn
ah... eilene. right...

To all those that say Alvin and the chipmunks weren’t vtubers lol, they were they were a band that sing and performed using anime characters. Now remind me what vtubers do. let’s see they sing and perform using animated characters just like Alvin and the chipmunks. Just cause they used Americans to draw their characters and not Asian people to draw them doesn’t make difference remember anime like manga is a world art form now just like pizzas aren’t solely made by Italians using stone ovens.
Guys let's pay homage to the first vtuber and subscribe to them
"Those that came before"
Before this video i found out super sonico had a vtuber channel and found out this programmer guy with a calm voice (天目童心ch).
both debuting in 2018.
I don't know who Harry the Hamster is, but god damn they sounds like a such a Chad!
vtubers started as mascot characters. Yes all returns to furry. The origin of all is furries.
Let's call anoying orange virtualmorp, just like dinosauromorpha look like dinosaur but not really a dinosaur
Ayano Date's channel seems to only have fairly recent videos. What happened to the older ones?
ah otaku moe I still remember the golden time until youtube for some reason screw her channel over satire ebo** chan joke
And in comes the metaverse enthusiasts, doing the same thing that has been around for ages, and acting like they invented the wheel
Saying Kizuna AI is certainly the safest bet but the fact that you somehow topped annoying orange as the meme original with Harry the hamster is unnecessarily impressive
I thought I was the only one who discovered Eilene
It's funny that you brought up Kemeno Friends as an example of non- vtuber characters because there are official Kemono Friends Vtubers. Look up KEMOV and the channels for Humboldt Penguin, Cape Penguin, Island Fox, Dire Wolf, Caracal, and Coyote if you're interested. Coyote also speaks English if you want to start there.
Oh man…you mean the before time?? The long long ago??
I love the bait and switch with Alvin and Chipmunks, and with Harry the Hamster.
I like how this video was spawned from a comment in the last video saying Nousagi forgot an earlier Vtuber.
But then he goes 'well actually.....'.
Also Eilene, Beilene and Beno are voiced with voice synth program similar to Vocaloid, CeVIO with voicebank Satou Sasara
Depressed Nousagi lore strengthen
This video made me want to watch some Kano again
Does this mean I can actually call 2D my oshi?
How fitting that Western Cartoons was what inspired V-Tubers considering that Western Cartoons was what inspired the very first anime, Astroboy.
oh man, Eilene... God bless her wherever she is now...
Ngl that intro was kinda cool
9:31 - Ah yes, my favorite Vtuber. Miss Barbara Millicent Roberts, the girl who can do anything.
Okay but for real Life in the Dreamhouse was a hilarious series and her vlogs are actually super comfy.
is Ulala from space channel 5 one of them too?
also the moment you said utaite and shown renai circulation, namirin came to my mind.
Ulala actually has collab game with vtuber too, at one time she indeed become vtuber.
I'm on Eileen era .
she always Collab with yomemi and Moe making funny skits and trolling yomemi on GTA 5 by replacing anything on her self . And funny thing is she was in hologra episode.
Ahhh Good ol times 🙂
Quite early pog
A really interesting look into the past~ I would add just one more aspect that I view as an important stepping stone or.. I guess, something that melted into the whole idea of the vtuber down the line, and that is japan's variant of the "let's play" community that involved them using voiceroid software like Yuzuki Yukari to play into the need of staying anonymous. At some point they might have noticed that they don't necessarily need to hide themselves - they can just become someone else.
When Hatsune Miku showed up on screen I started thinking about Macross Plus (1994), which features the virtual diva Sharon Apple, which in turn had me thinking about the movie Simone (S1M0NE) from 2002 which features another digital celebrity, kinda.
Edit: Never heard of Eilene before, so I appreciate that bit of history. The VN sprite aesthetic reminded me of back when Shurelya and LilyPichu had their joint channel and PNG sprites with voice overs around 2011-2012ish. I think both of them actually have vtuber rigs nowadays.
VRchat played a huge roll as well in creating Vtubers. So many people were using VRchat and having a model you owned was such a big deal.
the writing gets better with every video, keep up the good work man!
There are so many ingredients that went into the mix to make the VTuber boom happen how it did.. but I genuinely believe that the pandemic also kick things into gear!
I remember being so excited that TOM (Tokyo Otaku Mode) was doing a crowd funding campaign, if enough of us through down ~$200 they would make a Kizuna Ai figure!! Still got it brand new in box.. I don't care if it's worth $5 or $500 it was the first time that a VTuber got a figure & a wonderful little piece of the early days.
