Time-lapse video shows an octopus-like fungus bursting from its "egg." Fittingly known as the octopus stinkhorn, or devils's fingers, this mushroom spends much of its time underground. When it’s time to reproduce, it emerges and starts to ooze a spore-filled slime that attracts flies. The flies carry the spores away, helping the strange mushroom to spread far and wide.

It looks like an effect from a 70's/80's horror movie like Alien or Hellraiser.
time lapse of photographs to make an animated movie, this is how the old horror movies were made
I meant the fungus itself.
Little shop of horrors.
This has John Carpenter written all over it!
Yep truly
Where can I buy it? Neighbour's backyard awaits some unexpected personal touch.
Uni Verse
Hope your not downwind...
You can’t buy it because it’s not safe and if you see one you have to try to get someone to get rid of it also touching it even once can get you poisoned
Tan Tran Seriously? We used to throw pieces of this at each other when we were kids. The smell will make you puke.. it's so bad.
Tan Tran Wow.
Your information is horribly fase. The Octopus Stinkhorn is absolutely harmless, even when consumed, however it smells absolutely foul and tastes as bad as it smells. It is not recommended to eat it because of that, and it's overall not pleasant to be around, however it is edible since it contains no poison.
People like you who spread misinformation need to do your research before you spread it.
Yep the same. Need some revenge on the annoying neighbor
I can't imagine the stench in the studio while shooting that time lapse haha! Mushrooms are fascinating
HANSSS!!! GET THE PANZERWERFER!
Farell A
Eurotrip?
GET THE FLAMMENWERFER
KILL SIE MIT DEM FEUER!!!!
" Dempsey wheres iz ze wunderwaffe!"
I'm fascinated in Disturbed at the same time
I thought of the Gravemind when I first saw this. Wouldn't want an outbreak of these in my garden.
They aren’t poisonous but I’m not sure if it does any damage or harm to other plants.
this is some alien covenant type of shit lmaoo
Oh hell to the NO.
XD
That is one creepy plant, could it be drop shipped to someone you love?
First thing i thought about was what it tastes like.... i`ve been playing Let it Die too much.
Yes it's creepy, but can we not appreciate the fact it's called "Stinkhorn"?
They're very stinky
I just sat down next to a path of this stuff while hunting. I’ve never gagged from a smell before, but I almost threw up.
Wow! Indeed stranger than fiction.... just when I start thinking "I've seen everything".
Well at least we know where the producers of alien got their idea of alien eggs hatching from. I was waiting for a hatch-ling to fly out of my computer and attach itself to my face.
At first I thought it was the shrimp hand from Beatlejuice.
But wait surely they don't lay eggs so what was that all about?
You can find them in Germany.
I saw one last year.
Is it edible LMAO
i found this once in florida once it smells worse than the sewer, i didnt find out what it was until today lol now im balls deep in research
These seem like they would be in the realm in stranger things
Invasion of body snatchers comes to mind.
*cue stranger things intro*
Honestly, is more like starfish to me than octopus :D
It's like that fungus zombie episode of face off yesterday
I was thinking the same thing and the star fish face/ eye
This is the worst thing, I love it
I'm in love with the outro music
ikr it sounds so relaxing
The smell of rotting flesh really sells it
I have similar fungi growing around where I live from the same family. It is called Clathrus ruber, the Red Cage fungus.
Its like something from aliens vs predators.
Delightfully bizarre! Wonder if the pods in the Alien series got some inspiration here?
Reminds me of Graboids.
Nuclear Bombs are stuff of nightmares, this is beautiful.
Adeel ashraf ha gay
Adeel ashraf they just made nuclear bombs obsolete. Good ol U S of A.
Adeel ashraf completely irrelevant. Lighten up and learn to take a joke.
Adeel ashraf hey!!!
Nuclear bombs are beautiful. The pure magnitude of the amount of energy present is just stunning.
Your face is the stuff of nightmare
That is terrifying.
So the fungi kingdom has independently evolved flowers.
In what part of the world can you find these? Are they poisonous to touch? Edible?
Clathrus archeri (synonyms Lysurus archeri, Anthurus archeri, Pseudocolus archeri), commonly known as octopus stinkhorn, or devil's fingers, is a fungus indigenous to Australia and New Zealand, and an introduced species in Europe, North America and Asia.......they are mildly poisonous (can be eaten in 'egg' stage, but in full adult fruiting body stage are regarded as tasting repugnant (but they won't kill you)..........if you ever see one, leave it be and enjoy it's innocuous (and rare) form, what a weird and wonderful fungi!!!!!!!
Remind me of The Last of Us
Same
Reminds me more of the flood because the fungus when it spreads looks like a gravemind
"What is it?"
"That stench. I've smelled it before."
That was 100% fascinating.
Looks like body snatchers movie !!😝
Well, I won't be going outside anymore.
I've never seen it before I til today. Its in my yard and I've been here for a few years and it's never showed up till now
That was awesome!
Cool Alien plant
Also, cool music.
Somehow reminds me of the movie Life. Yikes!
Just watched this before bed. Sweet dreams everyone
there growing there own calamari
This reminds me of the red weed from Jeff Wayne's war of the worlds
is there a significance to the last one opening up like that where as the first two started deflating and closing in on itself?
as long as i don't have to smell that scent, i wanna keep them and terrify my guests
Whoa.
It's like from that movie Tremors
Demegorgen
Let's name it KELVIN
Dieses Jahr sah ich viele dieser Pilze
I think I can hear the pants of every anime fan dropping at once. Including me.
Not every fan
On en trouve à la Bresse dans les Vosges
In jamaica we call it crow blow nose. It's stink
Pls tell me where i can buy it
Very interesting!
Was it poisonous and lethal for a human?
Rafflesia and Octopus hybrid..
Looks like something out a horror movie
We had dogborn stinghorns at my old school and they smelled sooo bad
"Aliens"...
I want some!!!
Nope nope nope
Well I guess you could say those tentacles sure went "upside down". (ۥ__ۥ)
Creepy
They're edible right? What do they taste like?
Fuckinlicious. You should try it.
They are edible when they are in their egg form. The only way I'd ever eat a stinkhorn egg is pickled. Once the veil breaks they start developing a not so nice odor; it's still edible but not palatable.
They aren't edible in any form, just don't do it or you might end intoxicated.
Are they deadly or causes any infection?
NO
Wow!
So old... seen this year's ago
This is an alien life form. DON"T GO NEAR IT!
Are they edible? I know they smell like rotting flesh, but people eat durians so it's possible unless they're poisonous.
this was posted four years ago, but unlike the durian which has a strong smell and sweet taste, this fungus tastes as bad as it smells! completely harmless and edible, but not something you would have for dinner.
Not seeing enough references about the movie Alien. C'mon UA-cam crowd pay attention.. the Twitter community would've nailed this easily..
Is it edible
OK that's nice but
WHY ARE THEY EMERGING FROM FUCKING EGGS MAN ????
Cool, but is it edible? Maybe it would make a wonderful risotto.
So cute :)
Stink horn.?
oh……
ursula's finger
This fungus has given me nightmares for the majority of my adult life.
not my proudest fap...
*puts hotdog in the microwave*
The hotdog:
What? 😮
I wanted it until the flies attraction part.
Cool
is it edible?
ugh
Its just the fungus among us, if the soil is healthy it is full of life no need to stigmatize National Geographic its a good thing
I'm hungry now.
So what happens if I were to touch it??
You'd attract flies more than usual...
I would have named it the hemeroid crab
But can you eat it :p
get rdy for the wierd comments
Fungi are definitely aliens
Ovomorph vibes.
I once found a relative of this called a Dog Stinkhorn that had sprouted up where a tree had fallen over in a forest. The smell was _horrendous_ so saying it smells like rotting flesh is putting it mildly, it is much worse than you are imagining it to be!
Everyone, please watch my tiny nature videos. There is no talking in them. Shhh!
