  • The Ol' Man reviews the 2022 Triumph Bonneville 1200 Scrambler XC Goldline Limited Edition motorcycle, but discovers he has a massive problem now!
We look at the motorbike from all angles and discuss the engine, power & torque, handling, suspension, brakes, seating position, suitability for taller riders, whees & tyres, Engine/Exhaust sound, styling, colour scheme, instruments, modes, controls and more!
Does this motorcycle live up to expectations or not?
We'd like to hear from anyone who has one and tell us if there is a rattle in the exhaust; designed-in.
What do you think of the retro looks of this modern-classic motorcycle? Is it the best alternative to an adventure bike (adv)?
Can it go off-road? Is it good on the road? Is it hard or easy to ride?

I bought my 2019 Triumph Scrambler 1200XC in June of 2020. It was a press fleet bike with 1850 miles on it, a full factory warranty, and 2/3 of the normal MSRP (I paid $9,999). Since then, I've racked-up over 26,000 trouble-free miles. Aside from normal consumables, I've had to change a battery and a fork seal (if you ever need to do a fork seal, you'll want to buy the Triumph tool for disassembly/reassembly. The $42 cost of the tool more than pays for itself in saved aggravation). As far as exhaust heat goes, it's there alright, but manageable. I de-catted my exhaust, and it lowered the radiant heat by about 50 degrees Fahrenheit. I live and ride in the desert southwest (southern California's Mojave Desert), and even in the summer heat, as long as I have some airflow from movement, I don't notice the heat coming off the bike. The bike handles like a dream on asphalt and does very well on hard-ball dirt. In sand much deeper than four inches the weight of the machine rears its head, and the bike becomes a handful. This may be more of an indictment of my riding ability (or lack thereof) than the ability of the Triumph. The first modification I did on my Scrambler was to apply a tail tidy. This also involves some low-profile metal housed turn signal indicators (especially in the rear, as a tail tidy will put the stock plastic signal indicators directly in the exhaust stream, and they will melt). I actually don't mind the TFT. I know that most people prefer more traditional gauges, but I rather enjoy the tech of the new Triumphs. I use Google Maps on my phone which is tethered to the TFT via Bluetooth, and I get turn by turn directions without having to mount my phone somewhere on the handlebars where it's exposed to the elements or in danger of falling off. My Triumph Scrambler 1200XC has yielded absolutely ZERO buyer's remorse, and if I had to do it again, I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Based on my further review of the XC vs XE, and the Missenden Flyer's review, and considering the more road-focused aspect of my motorbike use, I am leaning more towards the XC versus the XE.
Initially I thought that the better kit on the XE would be better, I do reckon that I will rarely (if ever) take this bike offroad (other than to pitch a tent).
Good to know, and thank you for your info, as I do hope to invest in this wonderful steed in approx 12 months :)

Actually, scrub that about the XC, found a 2nd-hand XE, and they're lowering the suspension for me, and I like it a lot :)
Great for blasting around the back-roads around Lisburn, can't wait to do more exploring on it!

One of the reasons why I opted for the 900 is that I think they did a better job with some of the small details-for instance the analog speedometer, keyed ignition, the seat I quite like as well, and the aesthetics. The 1200 scramblers are more performance/utility oriented, but if they changed a few tiny things, they (the XC in particular in my opinion) could be nearly perfect street bikes. That said, people already love them. Almost every Triumph I have seen here in Columbus, Ohio is a scrambler of some kind. Just lovely bikes.

Bought a new one a few months ago, traded in a T 120. Finally a bike that fits me good. At 6'4", bikes are sometimes uncomfortable to ride. Harleys seats are much to low, adventure bikes too ugly. I added luggage, heated grips, racks..finally a bike I can ride for hours. Kudos to Triumph

Got to say that camera angle (chest mounted GoPro) is the absolute best for showing off the bike. Not to mention the amazing sound from the engine. I love the fact you play long shots with just the sound of the bike and no voiceover or cheesy music… for us petrolheads it’s pure ASMR. ❤

Had my XC for just over a year and absolutely love it. The classic looks will never age and its a modders dream to add little touches to make it your own. I'm with you on the different greys though and in fact a lot of owners get many of the grey bits powder coated black. I can't see myself ever selling it to be honest.

  • @SS-ck3ew

Very nice review, sir. Tubeless wheels are great to have. I cannot think of one instance in my life where I flatted my tubed tires and was oh so freakin' happy that I had tubes so that I couldn't get the freakin' bead broken and the tube removed and patched or replaced. I had a '76 GL1000 and those bikes ran tubes. Every single time I had to walk miles to find a pay phone (no cells back then!) and call to have a flatbed come get me and take me to a shop to get the tube replaced.
The last time I rode my GL1800 I got a nail in the front wheel, pulled over and removed the nail, plugged the hole and inflated it and got back on my way. I was in the Arizona/California desert and it was 126 degrees Fahrenheit. If I had tubes I would still have to call and wait in the heat for a flatbed to arrive and tow me to get the tube replaced.
    No thank you.
This Triumph you just reported on is superb! I think highly of them but alas I am not only olde but also somewhat physically handicapped and so it is likely too much for me at this point in my life. But still I very much enjoyed your thoughts on it. One need not buy a bike to be able to admire it for what it is and this one is simply gorgeous in a traditional manner than so few manufacturers pay homage to. In the 60s and 70s, Scrambers were the best selling rides available. They could do everything and looked fantastic just sitting there.
I very much enjoy your reviews. I believe I have said this before but it bears repeating: Too many reviewers seem more concerned with becoming what I call "sinfluencers". Cannot stand 'em.
Continue on speaking the truth of your wants and needs as you see them when reviewing. The truth is only disagreeable to those selling something else. Enough ramblin'. In all ways and for always, be well sir.
    And...Huzzah, indeed!
I somehow put this in a different review of a Tiger so I deleted it and then placed it here where I meant to put it in the first place. This is what comes of being ancient...

Thank you for the nice video, thank you for the sound! I have a green XC, Euro 4 from 2020 and I can fully understand your fascination. I love my bike, I love the torque and the relaxing style of driving. Sometimes when I am cruising through Belgium I am driving long times without changing gears, the 4th can be used so widely. I have replaced the indicators, motogadget mo.blaze tens1 directly mounted next to the number plate, removed the senseless plastic part in order to have a really short tail. Our German TüV was fine with it :-) Finally let me say that I have mounted Mitas MT-09 because I am going offroad here and then, with the 21" front wheel you can go everywhere, even in sand. After many years and many bikes I have found "my" bike now and I am really happy!

Lovely bike, lovely review. It suits you. I almost ended up with one last year. I narrowed my choice down to the XC, the T120 and the Speed Twin. The Speed Twin didn’t make the final two, and I couldn’t split the T120 and the Scrambler. Like you, I’m not keen on the TFT, and so ended up with the T120. Very happy with the T120 but still love this Scrambler.

Excellent review! I have a 1200XC, and I absolutely love it. I'm 6'4, and haven't tried an XE, but I truly believe the XC is a sweet spot, and not overly extreme. Bigger is not always better (or bikes would be judged on suspension travel alone), and there's something to be said about balance, stance, and proper geometry. I think that the XC has the right rake and wheelbase to allow the 21" front wheel to handle well, if not excellent. Keep up the great content!

My heart is divided between Speedmaster, and this. I have seen your video of Speedmaster several times. But, having a very similar complexion as yours, and coming from a GS1250 that has taken me everywhere like a mother and a rock, I think this one has also become my target. I think I need the change. Pride for the GS, but I have always love classic looking bikes.

It looks fantastic and more importantly Triumph have finally made a bike that fits my size of 6'2. One small gripe is the short little front mudguard, which in my opinion, should be longer so as to avoid getting mud and crap all over the front of the motor, especially considering it's a semi off road bike. Love the sound of it too, which can be heard nicely thanks to your new audio set up. 👍👍💯

It is useful, but it is not "beautiful." If I could find somebody to put on the gauges from a Speed Twin, I would love it. The only two bikes that I tried which fit me comfortably were the Suzuki m109r and the Triumph scrambler 1200 xe.
Bought the scrambler and I absolutely LOVE it. Only issue I've had is overheating while offroading due to the short front fender, but this was easily fixed by 3d printing an extension. New tires really bring out a new side to this bike, on or off road.

I love this bike! I bought my 2021 Scrambler XC almost 2 years ago, and it’s a joy to ride. I live off grid in the mountains of Montana, and it’s a rough dirt/clay road. Very rough. I do see a BIG difference in rider modes when it comes to the off-road mode. I notice when it kicks in going down a steep, slippery hill, and around corners. The other modes I don’t notice a difference in other applications. But it rides like a dream, has plenty of kick, sounds good stock, shifts clean. If you want pure speed, it’s not your bike. But this bike goes OLENTY fast enough, with plenty of power through the entire band, especially the low end with that 1200cc’s of gruntworthy deliciousness. I agree about your nitpicks, and I’m actually planning on removing many of the silver aspects and powder coating them to match the bike’s tank (I have the matte green w/the thin yellow stripe). So many upgrades I want to do, but that will be this next year. Your riding audio was fantastic, very clean & clear, well done. You’ve got my subscription!

Absolutely a brilliant bike, I do agree with changing the exhaust, perhaps powder coating some of the shiny covers and tidy up the tail a bit, a small screen would have been nice but can be added easy enough.
The heat emitted is not that bad, I was out during the recent heat wave (one or two days of it) ! was noticeable but bearable it can also be a blessing on a cold day!

Hi my friend, I've got exactly the same problem with that bike, like you do... :-)
I fell in love with the Speed Master as well, but I am 1,86 m tall and the SM ist to small for me... Besides of that, it looks silly. So the Scrambler fits perfect to my sice and it looks fantastic. My son rides a Thruxton R an has de-catted it. What a great fat sound it got... I would do the same with the Scrambler in case I can afford it one of these days. So the Scramler is No 1 on my list for my next bike. Thanx a bunch for your review. Warm greetings from Germany.

That was an excellent well done review thank you so much for it... I test drove a used 2019 1200 XE at a local dealership today all I can say is "WOW" that is torque and fast hit 160 klms in a couple of heart beats - the height was perfect I'm 6' 2" 225lbs 63 years old been dreaming of a bigger dual sport motorcycle to do everything where I live in south west British Columbia, Canada = while I would never dream of doing steep/tight gnarly trails with it I can seeing riding it almost everywhere else I ride now. Only negatives is wow my inner right knee got hot from the catalytic converter I had read reviews of this issue but did not expect that level of heat and when I first started riding it I noticed the twitchy steering but after a few minutes I did not experience it again. My son and I currently ride 2012 and 2013 Kawasaki KLX250s dual sport motorcycles so not much that I can compare other than we can do the gnarly trails.

Excellent review, I bought mine in April of 22 and have put just over 6k miles on it. I absolutely love it. I have noticed that I have had to adjust the spring preload up a few rounds on both ends after break in. It is awesome on road and even better on mild trails. The engine and suspension combo is super easy to ride off road. The only thing I would add to your assessment is that if you are used to sport bikes, don't buy this thinking it's fast. It's not fast at all. It accelerates really strong up to about 80 mph. It will continue to accelerate with some spirit up to 115 and that is where you run out of gear. Plenty of useful speed and I think perfectly matched to normal street riding, but definitely not a sport bike.

@@nickbazan27 I have a 2019 Scrambler XE and a 2014 Breakout with the 103 on it - depending on what engine you have on your Road King, it can be comparable to the Breakout though the Road King is more practical and more nimble (believe it or not) than the fatassed Breakout. I've ridden 48k miles on my breakout and 10K miles on the triumph. I love both of them for different reasons. I will say that the Breakout will outperform the scrambler on highway high speeds. I can cruise 85 mph and much higher on the Breakout without feeling like I am pushing it. The Scrambler will start to feel forced after 80mph like it was said here. It can go if you need to pass someone or whatever but you won't want to cruise doing 85 or higher for very long. On Sport mode it will take off and it's loads of fun but if you want to travel on highway for long times at high speed, the Road King will do it more smoothly in my opinion

Totally agree with your review. I bought a brand new matte green1200XC during Lock Down One. I'm a similar size to you and always loved the modern classics but looked like a circus bear riding a tricycle on them...😆. The 1200XC is my perfect bike - I owned a Tiger 800XRT prior to the Scrambler (also owned a Bonneville 790, a Bonneville 865 and Sprint ST) - and love the fact that the Scrambler is a true adventure bike in modern classic guise, and it fits me!. I have modified it some what, even adding some Metal Mule hard cases for touring - though they don't live on the bike permanently. I've made up some "saddlebags" from some camo Bergen side bags which allow me to carry waterproofs, tools, etc day to day - look so much better than Triumph Rugged Pannier it came with. I genuinely can't find a bike that could replace it... Best modern Triumph? Without a doubt, for taller riders...

Perhaps it is because I am myself a large, bearded o'man, but I find your reviews leave me with a much greater impression of what the bike being tested feels like. This Triumph Scrambler, for instance, was pretty much under my radar as a possible next bike, but now it might make the short list. I really like that TFT display which you dislike, but that's the thing: you give us your honest opinions and we don't have to agree with it. But at least you tell us. With other motorcycle reviewers on YT, I'll watch their reviews and having finished watching, I still have no idea what the bike is like. A perfect case in point are all the multiple YT videos from the British launch of the new BSA: they are all the same and they are all universally devoid of any content. I don't know if that bike will ever be sold here in Canada, but I do hope to at least watch an Ol'Man review of it.
