these songs are one of the only things that makes my adhd brain calm down, so ty to The Longest Johns for helping relieve some of my more draining symptoms
The misinterpretation of this song by some commenters is a real shame. It is *not* supposed to be happy. Listen to the lyrics, it's right there. It's about a crew psyching themselves up to go on a mission of which they are rightly terrified. It's about how people in that kind of situation lie to themselves and make a show of bravado in front of others in an attempt to be braver themselves. It's not about how the whalers will make lots of money and get lots of women. It's about how there's every chance they won't, because they'll be dead. And how they know that, but kid themselves anyway, because they need the work, and if they faced reality they'd jump ship. And it's a brilliant representation of that thought process and how it contrasts with the truth. Having good associations with it is one thing; I do myself. But it does this wonderful, clever, evocative song a real disservice to act like the mood of it is in any way positive.

It's not about how the whalers will make lots of money and get lots of women. It's about how there's every chance they won't, because they'll be dead. And how they know that, but kid themselves anyway, because they need the work, and if they faced reality they'd jump ship. And it's a brilliant representation of that thought process and how it contrasts with the truth.
Having good associations with it is one thing; I do myself. But it does this wonderful, clever, evocative song a real disservice to act like the mood of it is in any way positive.
