    Big thanks to Webster University, Six Mile Sculpture Works, Noah Kirby,
    Alison Ouellette-Kirby!
    Congratulations to Webster students Aaron and Abigail for their successful first run on the furnace they built!
    Please enjoy and thanks for your support!

    If you're new here welcome! My name is Laura Mullen Vermilye and I am an iron casting metal artist. Being a cast iron artist is an interesting - and at times tough journey, but the rewards far exceed all challenges. While working with cast iron to create my art I am exposed to an amazing community of artists who are as dedicated and passionate as I am. The cast iron art culture is a major influence in my life and on my work and I want to share this artistic adventure with anyone who is interested in seeing hard working people make amazing art with a hot and dangerous material. To do this, I make vlog style videos on this channel that chronicle the artwork that I am currently making and my journeys in Metalsmithing and iron casting. In between casting and metal art videos you may also see some behind the scenes footage of me roaming around the heart of the Midwest and the Ozarks. Thank you to all you folks that are as interested in my small metal project as you are in my cast iron art! Thanks for tunin' in, and as always - I love you.

    Yes!
    You are in the right track with the editing now.
    You tamed down the music compared to previous videos.
    To be able to hear the people and the ambient sounds makes all the difference. Like night and day.
    With that said. In my humble opinion, this is the best pouring video you have made by a long shot.
    Happy holidays to my favorite Cast Iron Gypsy 🤘🏻

    That is awesome! I've never seen a community event quite like that - it's kind of like a cross between a pig roast and one of the pottery painting places only in this case it involves a liquid metal at an insanely high temperatures and clearly a lot of safety protocols are in place. I actually kind of wondered where you could hold an event like that - but honestly I'm just glad it happened, you caught a lot of it on video and your pieces came out looking amazing! Awesome work! 😀👍

      Did you use silica sand molds? How did you harden your molds?
      I love the idea of using chocolate bars for your pattern.
      I'd like to see the finished product.

    Excellent video and a subject that bring back memories. In the late 60's to mid 70's I worked in a medium size foundry in Northwest Indiana. Cast iron and semi-steel mostly green sand with shell cores. Occasionally there would be an order with the mold made of shell core. Poured a lot of metal during my years working there, and have the burn scars to prove it. Dropping the bottom on a 100 foot tall cupola is not a trivial event. 😎

    Fantast when a plan comes together. 2x👍 The mould looks like you could use it again.
    Have you thought about making any Christmas ornaments out of cast iron? a bauble would be waaaay to heavy, but a star or ginger bread person. Just an idea.

      Great idea, I love that! Maybe the ornament will come with a custom stand since it will be so heavy 😱🤯🤩

    I recently got into blacksmithing, and I am steering towards casting as my next hobby I’m from Missouri. I did that know that they were casting festivals such as the one in this video how does one become involved or figure out where the next gathering will be?????
    Your reply is greatly appreciated

    i have never seen this channel before. I am wondering what are the moulds made from?

    • @CastIronGypsy
      @CastIronGypsy  3 місяці тому

      Thanks for the message Frank! My molds are made with a resin bonded sand that is used in the foundry industry. Some are made from chemcast and some others are sodium silicate. Hope you enjoyed☺️

    It seems it would have been a good idea for the guy in charge of the furnace plug to have a big stick to ram the clay into place.

    • @kimber1958

      I second that

    • @CastIronGypsy
      @CastIronGypsy  6 місяців тому +2

      Many people do, many people don’t. Depends on:
      1. Who built the furnace
      And/or
      2. Who’s running the furnace
      If you or Wayne were there we’d stick bot it. (Wink)

    What would it cost to make a custom wood stove like one sees in people's wood cabins?

    sodium silcate and sand molds?

    • @CastIronGypsy
      @CastIronGypsy  6 місяців тому +1

      It’s actually Lino-cure but sodium silicate was a good guess grumpy old man. 😊
