      Gordon Flash Hey mate. Yeah Keeler is going good thanks. Still just getting properly used to it but Definitely a great board. It's got a really good balance of speed and maouverability and would be good for waist to head high waves no problems unsuspect. Gone from the Christenson Keels which are almost identical to the fcs2 modern keel just a touch smaller up to the new CI Merrick Keels and it's got more hold and drive so yeah pretty stoked so far. Good wave catcher too. It's towards the lower end of my poly volume but gets in good quality glassing looks great. Definition a very good twin keel for a decent wave range. The guy Craig I think it is from the surfboard guide has one too and says he's living it. Thanks for your support 👍🏻

      Hey buddy... FCS 2 or futures boxes. I think the board is really designed for a keel fin. FCS 2 I used the modern keel and loved it. Futures boxes the equivalent is the Christenson keel in Captain fin or a K2 in futures. They were great for my 82 kgs in a 6'0" and that's the kind of ride that bord is designed for as the rocker it really flat. You could go smaller thought something like the Neal purchase chipa fins be fine in that for a smaller board and rider. Probably wouldn't go below the size of an MR or power twin regardless. Another good middle ground would be naked Viking fins the new Noel salad model that's on his surf and show reviews would probably be perfect for what your looking for. Hope that helps.

      In detail It Depends a little on the size of the board, the fin placement and the feel that you are looking for.. On my MR Cali Twin the fins are set back from the usual thruster layout… I think it’s 10.25 Inch 260mm up from the tail where a thruster is more like 280mm… If the fins are in a thruster layout I would want the Power twin just to get the board under control… In a Propper twin and trailer layout like the MR Cali twin I can use AMT, MR, or Power twins successfully and just pick the one I want for loose vs hold… ( having the fin boxes further back creates more hold) Hope that makes sense… Have a look at Noel salas Surf and show review on the board too and see what he says.. I generally like at least the same as he likes if not a little bigger. Cheers.

      Hi Cellini. Thanks for the kind feedback. Simple answer is in order of loose to hold it goes AMT, MR, Power so Power should be the safe bet for you for control if you like that feel best if you want loose then you can try the others… There isn’t a huge amount of difference but enough to matter….. The power have more rake so a little more controlled than the more upright sets…

I got my fins from Secretspot in the uk but there out of stock again. Could try boardshop uk too. Downthe line surf uk are showing stock. Mate how would you recon the machado quads would work in a freak flag bean bag 5'6? I weigh 65kg so I reckon it would have enough drive in the combo of the tail of the freak flag bean bag being smaller than the original bean bag and me being quite light. Really interested in your opinion

    • @lawson45uk
      @lawson45uk  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah mate should be a good combo well suited to that wing tail. Especially at your weight, that's plenty of fin area.. I would give it a go for sure. I ride a similar set up in my bean bag actually. Two CI Twin fronts and 2 of the +1 trailers from the AMT.. I should try this combo myself as it's the one board that wasn't perfect with the split Keels. Cheers.

      @lawson45uk  4 роки тому

      Oh and the Fishbeard too if you want to look at a performance twin but I personally like to keep it smaller wave and a slightly more grovely fish design myself. The MR Cali is quite a wee performer compared to how it looks. Obviously not like a black Barron or anything.

      OH Sorry I think I misread thought you were talking boards. Yeah rocket wide at that size go for the Merrick 2 +1 there really good. Twins probably be better with a propper twin fin board they tend to be loose and unpredictable when run in the thruster fin placement. You could try a modern keel if you really wanted but if you really want a twin fin get a twin fin design I reckon. Cheers.

      Hi Kyle. Nice choice mate. I literally just got my 6'10" Seaside and beyond a couple of weeks ago and have had a few rides. If your prioritizing speed, flow and hold I would go for the Controller quads also the Biolos Seaworthy quad are pretty much the same design give or take if you cans still get hold of them. If your FCS 2 the split keel is equivalent model. Have a look at my preview review on the board I show the fin recommendations on that too. Tried the Machado Quads but same as in the Seaside I didn't like them as much, little hard to feel out and inconsistent for me. Hope that helps. Cheers.

      laxbro7ify yeah mate ridden the modern keels in the aloha fish and the similar Captain fin Christenson keel in seaial keeler and they go great. Speed hold and drive. Think it's due to the depth size and upright nature of them. Certainly different to the slipper tracky nature of some keel fish. Think the combination of the more modern takes on the board design and the find makes for a great feel. Cheers.

    Hi mate, which out of the CI AM Keels and the Machado Keels would you say for adding hold and stability to a twin? My pin tailed twin is a bit loose in bigger surf using the Jim Banks Hooker fins and want to tone it down a bit in overhead surf..

    • @lawson45uk
      @lawson45uk  10 місяців тому +1

      Hi just had a look at the hooker fin. That’s less area than the ci and machado thought it looks like he also has some others that are similar area and shape to the ci. I would say the ci and machado would both add a little hold. I think I would lean a little towards the ci myself. I think That machado is a touch bigger and more upright but the way the ci has sweep and back cut it’s probably a little more suited to hold and release while still providing so one responsiveness. The machado be a little more down the line speed oriented but since you want more speed control than speed creation I think the CI be be the go. Keels aren’t ideal for bigger waves for me personally but the ci is definitely more designed in that kinda way. Cheers

    I want to try the AMTs Twins+1 large like u have there (all the right..or your left in the line up) but your using the "+1" as the quad trailer..? The +1 is 50/50 foiled on both sides like a center thruster..wont that make it odd? Usually the quad trailer has a flat foiled inside like the front fins. Im on a 5'10 Seaside that I dig with 39liters..i dig the volume. I'm 5'7 at 72kilos. I have the Controler quads and the Machado quads but I head that an Large upright template without too much rake would allow me to turn my kinda long board around quicker in the pocket. What Large Quad upright template do u sugest..or would I just for the AMTs and the quad trailer?
    Thanx

    • @lawson45uk
      @lawson45uk  3 роки тому

      Ok little hazy but think I have this right.. The AMT’s are a great fin.. I have ridden them the following ways and all are perfectly acceptable some will just be better at certain things than others…Twin and trailer exactly as they come, Twin and larger trailer ( like a Carver large or something else (50/50 foil obviously just replacing that back fin).. Twin and 2 trailers ( Essentially a quad but the front fins very large back very small) and yes you can definitely run rear quads in 50/50, 80/20 and flat inside foils.. They will all feel slightly different, can’t remember the assumed characteristics but think 50/50 is more controlled and flat is more drive but not 100% this is why they moved to 80/20 foils to get the best of both. You will notice the carver small is called quad / centre fin as with the 50/50 foil you can use it for either.. Hope this is helpful.. Remember too fin cant.. FCS built into the box, Futures built into the fin so doesn’t work across all fins.

      Yeah I guess the controller and Machado could be a little big for your weight. If you're looking for a more performance feel you could drop to more of a performance fin. Maybe like a stretch. SF4 or large accelerator front and the rears from the controller which are a reactor quad rears anyways. Or even reactor fronts. Large. This is all assuming your FCS. Also had success but rainbows canard cut away and McCallum especially quads but they're a smaller step down from the controller and also have big ish back fins but smaller fronts than controller so depends on tail shape a bit. I'm assuming your FCS

    Recently picked up a 5'8 MF catfish and have been really struggling to decide on a pair of fins. Primarily using in 1-5ft swell. I've been looking at the FCS 2 stretch, performer, and split keels. I'm 190 so I need a large pair of fins and enjoy surfing fast and carvy with an occasional snap. Any recommendations?

    • @lawson45uk
      @lawson45uk  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah you sound like a split keel candidate to me mate. If you like speed books and drive and done mind sacrificing a little snap those are my favorite fins for wide tailed boards. Stretch large aye good too if you want something a little more performance but still fast. Large accelerator or performer fronts and the standard FCS quad rears in a medium also good. If you want loose the power twin could be ok but they would be more suited to an MR style board. Hope that helps.

      @@lawson45uk Thanks for the response! The split keels were my initial decision but since they only come in M I was a bit worried. Ya think since it's a keel and has a bunch of area already it'll work fine?

    • @lawson45uk
      @lawson45uk  3 роки тому +1

      Alex de Marignac yeah no idea why the call them medium possible so to not put off the smaller guys from trying a speciality fin. It's way higher in total surface area than any of the large fins and Eben the keels I think. If you go on FCS Aussie site bottom of the page has a fin data link and that gives the full run down. They're my favourites in small wave and wide fat tail boards all day long.

    • @lawson45uk
      @lawson45uk  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Yes and no.. lol The keels will reduce drag and generate a little more speed but they might not be optimal as the fin boxes wont really be in the correct placement or cant for a keel too. Doesn't mean it wont work greatly depends on the board and the waves. The Twin and trailer version might be fun to try they will still not be in an optimal position but close enough with the right tail. Have a go and see how you get on. I remember my Pod Mod being quite fussy about fins and only liking a thruster but take that with a pinch of salt too as I dondt experiment that much. I know a lot of people are liking the Feel of the MR style of twin and trailer fins as a good fun option for smaller days. Hope that helps and dont be scared to experiment for yourself especially if you can borrow some fins or get a good price somewhere. Cheers.

      @lawson45uk  3 роки тому

      Hey mate. Cheers for your support. Yeah the ci are a larger fin so there is a slight sacrifice in responsiveness but a gain in hols and drive. • @lawson45uk
      @lawson45uk  3 роки тому +2

      @@mitchell_w Yeah depends quite a lot on the board and the fin box locations to be honest the further back your fins are the more hold the fin will give per area.. If the board is designed as a twin and trailer it might feel better as a twin and trailer. If your a light guy good surfer and riding lower volume to weight ration the twins without a trailer in that kind of board might be fine if your a heavier guy slower surfer higher volume to weight like me you might prefer the drive and surety of the bigger more raked keels... In terms of the Surf and Show fin itself it's a nice fin. Less stiff than the Ci but still enough hold for someone my size riding higher volume. Probably a little closer to the modern keel in FCS in feel so definitely looser than the ci less area more upright.. Looking at the surface area and rake of the fins on the relevant websites is a really good indicator of where you might want to be.. You can then pick a smaller keel or a larger twin and trailer set to get the desired effect. Cheers. Let me know if you have some more specific info on you the board or what you have tried already maybe I could help I would guess your fin quiver for twin and twin and stabilizers should ideally have one of each options a good twin and trailer and a keel.

    • @lawson45uk
      @lawson45uk  Рік тому +1

      Hey Nic. Simple answer is yes but it gets a little more complicated than that. You really need to fine tune the fins to the board and its design to get the most out of it. Will smaller fins make a board easier to turn sure. But depending on the board you might loose heaps of drive and make it slippery and hard to control then you have issues with being able to apply weight and power to the rail and sliding out on turns. I generally find bigger volume boards for your weight often have better all round behaviour with a little bigger fin as you can create more speed and drive a and control that extra boyance but yeah it really depends on the board itself and the feeling you want. Let's say the board is already really fast on its own. You might pick a fin that's got less base and area and sacrifice a little of that speed you have plenty of to gain some maneuverability or of your board already has plenty of grip and hold you might go to a more upright fin and sacrifice a bit of hold for some more maneuverability. I have a multi part video that goes through all that design elements of fins and how to change to achieve the feeling you want if you have the time and desire to get that deep into it. Cheers.

Noel is lighter and still loves his AMK and Craig from the surfboard guide also loved the AMK plus in the seaside or anything that's not a pure twin the boxes are further forward than a pure twin so yeah I would probably lean towards the AMK for a more modern upright keel and the rasta if you want a bit more raked retro feel. @lawson45uk  5 років тому

      Pete Webb Hi Pete. So I was riding the Bean bag and found the split keels lacking the drive I was expecting which is unusual as they have heaps of dive in anything else. I had been riding a 2 plus 1 power twin in my psycho nitro and they were nice and drivey so I decided to give the power twins a go with the rear trailers from the split keels. That was massive drive but aweful to turn then I tried the AMT with the same quad rear and that felt better but still too hard to turn. Then tried the AMT with a carver small rear quad. That felt good but I still thought I might be able to get it to turn a bit better so decided to get another set of AMT and try 2 X AMT trailers and that feels great. The AMT trailer has depth and is sat quite far back so the rear end hold factor is there without something that's large to have to turn through the water. The AMT fronts are upright so turn well but still deliver great drive so that's where I have settled at. The power twin with two power twin rears is also good but the AMT is the best for loose and drivey .. thanks for watching :-)

    I bought a Seaside 5’5 two weeks ago. Had about 5 surfs on it. I'm 5'9 and 11 stone. I’ve got another 2 weeks to swap it for another board from the shop I bought it from if I want to. It grovels ace but over chest high in steeper waves it starts to feel a little less manageable. Perhaps I just need to get used to it but it slid out doing cut backs a couple of times on steeper waves, which I'm not used to happening to me on my daily driver board, (5'9 29.5 ltrs thruster fin). I’m using the Machado quads. I probably could swap it out for a smaller one however, in the interest of grovelling and making the 5'5 more versatile, what fins might make it hold better Rastovich quads??, is it just me, or the board size?

      Hey mate. Hmm I personally found the Machado Keels a little unpredictable some times they would grip and drive others they would just slip. Would expect it to be less of an issue for your weight to volume ratio on the board but sounds like the same problem… I would have a crack at the split keels myself.. Controllers or Seaworthy same thing if your in Futures. Could try the rastas but there not all that big though would give you more area future back… Could leave the Machado fronts in with some more traditional rear quads maybe but yeah I personally would go Controller / split keels if Its grip drive and hold you want.. My bigger Seaside is fine in head and a bit with these fins and I’m 84kg.. Hope that helps. If that's not doing the trick I dont know.. 5'5" isn't a big or over volume board for your weight in my opinion.

I hate blowing rare good surf on swapping fins around.

      @@barnabyflynn965 Yeah sweet as mate. I was going to say it's less than ideal but you could just chuck something more traditional like the HS rear quads in the rear with the Machados up front. Probably track a lot but will give you an idea of if it solves the slipping problem. WIde tail boads usually need area back and that's what the split keels end up doing. not actually a million miles off the Machado fronts with HS rears but wont really match as well. The MAchado rears have no depth hence no hold.. The design is great for not much drag but also not ideal for hold too

    Puddle jumper twin fin suggestion?

    • @lawson45uk
      @lawson45uk  5 років тому

      Hey Nathan don't see why not. What's your weight. Power twins would be a good one in FCS2 you can always try front twins and back small quads too if the 2 plus 1 doesn't grip enough for you. I like the chippa for 2+1 but I'm 88 kgs. Cheers

      6'4 100kg or quad

      Nathan Eastaugh definitely the bigger twins. The power or chippas would be good. If you can find the captain fin co NPJ quartet that's the same fin as the chippa but with 2 rear trailers for not much more money would allow you to try the twin and stabilizer and a loose front drive orientated quad. I use the large mcallumn quads in my puddle jumper and love them too. Those are good. Cheers

      FCSII?

    • @lawson45uk
      @lawson45uk  5 років тому

      Nathan Eastaugh probably look at large accelerators as a thruster or a quad and you could either stick with medium quad rears or go for large quad rears. L or XL performers also a good option. A stretch 5 fin set would be a really good option too. Usually decent size surface area is good if your 100kg but depends on board volume and ability etc. I like a big drivey fin and ride big volume in boards so most of the fins I used are the large end of large. Large AM or large performers are as small as I go in surface area on any board myself. Have a look at my other fin guides if you have time. Cheers.
