- Welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
Woodturning - My Best Idea Yet? 💡
In this woodworking video, firstly I make a blank using epoxy resin and apple burl. I then use a woodturning lathe to turn an ornate river bowl.
When woodturning a piece, I find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning. I have been told that my video's fall into the ASMR category.
If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.
Thanks for watching.

I kept racking my brain trying to imagine what you were crafting. I never saw this coming. Once again your skill and craftsmanship have put a smile on my face. Thank you sir.
No problem Eliot. Glad you enjoyed it man. The colour is growing on me 😊👍🏻👌🏻
Oh! Very beautiful! Let's create more beautiful products!
Helllls yeah, let’s do this.
As a fellow woodturner it's obvious I have a lot of room for improvement after watching this project. It's simply beautiful and wouldn't look out of place in a high-end art shop with a hefty price tag. Thank you for inspiring me to try for greater things.
Thanks Alan. Glad you enjoyed the video buddy. Plenty more cool projects lined up 😊👍🏻
Some people just see a slab of wood, you see a bowl. Awesome work.
Nice one Ron. Much appreciated 😊👍🏻👏
Ahhh...tricky tricky Jack...
I think it's reasonable to say..those who follow your art may attempt to guess what you are doing next (me)...he's making a mortise and will turn his blank over and remove the support and bolts..nope...huh ?!..the center is opened..will he fill it somehow ?..more resin ?...
Ok..he'll round the sides up almost to the bolts..yikes !..nope...oohhh..he's cutting circles to mount together !..lol...
It's always an adventure trying to figure out the form and manner of making...
Thank you Jack for this excellent adventure and the beauty you bring forth...
As always...🌿🌿🌿
Thank you. I love the fact that so many of you enjoy the guessing aspect of the videos and now do my best to not reveal the finished product in the title or thumbnail. Glad you enjoyed.. you think that was the right colour resin?
@@JackMackWoodturning yes !...
I was worried the more opaque blue would take over..but it did produce a nice mix..creating shallows along the edges and maybe a sandbar or two...
It's fun trying to keep up the "what's next ?"..lol...thank you for your response...best wishes to all..🌿🌿🌿
I really like the way you didn't just do a mirror image type thing, but placed the wood to replicate an actual riverbed. Very nice!
Wow, my eyes are in disbelief. A true piece of art! Well done sir.
A new take the economy bowl... and I like it! Also a different way to do resin/wood combination bowls. Bravo!
Stuart
Well summarised stu. How did you feel about the choice of resin colour? I wanted it to look quite natural but I feel like it came out a little granny smithy/ to us waste 😊
@@JackMackWoodturning I liked it but green is my favorite color LOL! I'll agree with your granny smith apple notion but it reminded me of Irish Spring soap.
Thats good. Still, maybe I will tone it down a little next time 😊👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning I suggest trying a darker green, emerald, forest or something along those lines. However, it’s your project, do what YOU want!
Yeah good idea. Some experimentation required I think 🤔
That's one Beautiful, Magnificent 😁🥰 Absolutely Artistic piece of Woodworking/Craftsmanship. That's a Salad 🥗 Bowl 🥣 that any "Salad 🥗🥗🥗" would be 🦚 proud to be served in!

Jack this one is over the Top I can't get enough of your creativity 👌 spot on
Thanks buddy, do you think you resin wax the right colour choice ?
@@JackMackWoodturning for sure
Cheers Tim. It was way greener than expected but it is growing on me 😊👍🏻
The smiley face in the two pieces of wood when you first put them together was cool as!
...it's a very beautiful piece...and I love the fact that it was created with minimal loss of wood...congrats on this work of art...
Thanks Hawk. Did you like the choice of colour?
@@JackMackWoodturning ...yeah I did...although I think just about any other color would have looked good with that amazing wood grain...except maybe anything in the yellowish family which would blend rather than contrast with the wood...
The color would likely be determined by the other furnishings it would be placed within...but, in the end, what you produced is a gorgeous work of art!...
Another beautiful piece Jack! That resin really made it pop! 👍🏻 Thanks for sharing!
Thanks bill, you think
The resin was the right colour ?
wow that burl looks amazing! love the multi-level design that gives the contrasting shape
Cheers P. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👏
Another Home run with bases loaded . The contrast between wood and resin is awesome . Does not get any better than this . Your skill in producing what what your minds eye sees is amazing . Thanks for sharing . Keep your fingers on your hand and not the floor. ( Stay safe)
Thanks buddy. Would you have it in your home?
@@JackMackWoodturning Only if I had a home worthy enough for it to be put in .
Hello video hay lắm bạn ơi cảm ơn bạn đã chia sẻ video này nhé 👍👍👉🔔🙏♥️♥️💯💯💯❤️
Thanks 🙏 Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
What a fabulous bowl you are rea.,y clever I love how you made it the colours are brilliant can't wait for next video
Thanks Amanda. Much appreciated 😊👍🏻😉
Love this - when you re-stacked the pieces and they suddenly went from 2D to 3D, it reminded me of a Möbius strip. And then around 8:50 when the line suddenly became clear and it was like "Oh! I get it!" Really satisfying.
Thanks 😊
Hi Jack, i'm running out of expletives to describe your projects, that was superb, ooooooooooooooooooft!!! Cheers Will, have a good weekend.
Haha nice one Will mate. Much appreciated 😊👍🏻
Absolutely gorgeous! I would buy that in a heartbeat!
Thanks L. Much appreciated 😉😊👍🏻

I wasn’t sure what you were doing until you cut that first ring then I could see it and I knew it was going to be awesome!
Stunned am I. WOW such vision and beauty! Great job.
Nice one T. Thanks for watching 😊👍🏻
That is amazballs. Like the execution was flawless.
Thanks buddy
This is absolutely gorgeous! I freaked out when you cut the piece then understood...
Haha it did feel a little wrong to cut. Worked out in the end though thankfully 😊
@@JackMackWoodturning Crazy to see what can be made with a lathe (and some serious skills, obviously).
Also, I am really impressed by how sharp chisels are! They cut through wood like butter :O
That is all thanks to the Tormek sharpening system. I could have a shave with my chisels 🤣
@@JackMackWoodturning You bet! The poor piece of wood doesn't stand a chance...
I love the color choice and the way you cut the rings without a high dollar cutter attachment. Great job, beautiful bowl.
Thanks Linda. Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏻😊
Tank you my friend jack 😘 very much and very good 👍 and Quality 👌 and clean 👏
Thanks buddy. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
You really outdid yourself with this bowl. It is very beautiful and I like it a lot, thank you for sharing this video and your time.
Thanks buddy. Would you have it in your home?
That's stunning! I can't believe you just did that
Haha, I’m glad you enjoyed it. Have you watched anyone do this style of bowl before ?
No I haven't and this is genius!
Amazing.. The resin color change was a surprise.. Excellent work. Now if you only had that online store.... Best Wishes..
The store will come one day, in the mean time you can contact me through social media messages if you see anything that takes your fancy. 🙂👍🏻
@@JackMackWoodturning Thanks.. Since I don't use social media, do you have a specific/sharable email address? Totally understand if one is not available.

That is absolutely stunning Jack , at the beginning I thought that they would make cracking shelves .
Thanks S, not a bad idea 😊👍🏻👏
Stunning Jack. You are one very clever man.
Nice one Steve, much appreciated 👏😊👍🏻
Your videos are almost therapeutic! Absolutely stunning craftsmanship!
Thanks D. Is that a vespa?
This bowl has some mystical vibes, but I can't tell whether it's the shape or the colours that do it... very interesting technique to make it
This is a a great idea. It’s gorgeous so beautiful. Your work never ceases to amaze me. I wish I could watch you work. You would be an amazing teacher . Well done stay safe
Thanks. Do you have any questions you’d like me to answer?
@@JackMackWoodturning I do ...is your craft something that can be 'self taught' or do you really need to do a apprenticeship style role in order to fully master the tools and skills needed to produce work to the level that you are?
I believe this in the times we live with all information available on the internet it’s entirely possible to be self taught but that happens through classic learning practices. Just winging t will not make you a skilled woodturner. Gathering and understanding information is key, equally important is the ability to know what information is wrong. Experience and time at the lathe will help with that
Green is my favorite color, and this bowl is gorgeous!! If we had the money, I would buy it. Definitely my favorite piece of yours I've seen so far (just found your channel tonight).
Greetings from Scotland! Jack, this is one of my favorite projects. Love all you do, but I couldn't imagine what you were doing all the way through.... and voila! Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for a great video.
No probs K. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻😉
I love this technique for bowl making and I love the resin! Beautiful! When can I expect it to be delivered?? 😂😂
Haha, do you think the resin colour was right ?
@@JackMackWoodturning oh, most definitely! It was perfect!
Glad you think so Jullee 😊👍🏻
Another awesome piece of art, Jack - Jack
Thanks a lot Jack. Much appreciated. Jack 🤣😊👍🏻
Stunning! Nicely done, Jack!
Thanks buddy, do you think you resin wax the right colour choice ?
I do. But I’m not a “high gloss” fan for wood. The sheen brought out the resin well and highlighted the beauty of that burl. I thought you made a great choice with your finish product.
So interesting! Love how you got the bowl out of a flat piece.
Your best idea turned out to be a beautiful piece well done.
Thanks Martin.. you think the resin was. The right colour?
Very impressive, not sure if it was an original idea to you but it was for me. Interesting that the Resin started out more blue, ended up green. Great job, well done,
Yeah I thought the same. Less green next time I think 👍🏻😊
When I saw you mixing the resin, I honestly thought that it was going to be blue in spite of the title. Wasn't expecting it to actually turn green!
Do you think green is right for this piece?
@@JackMackWoodturning Oh, yeah! It looks good to me!
Hi Jack beautiful bowl my wife loves that good job friend
Cheers buddy. Are you going to make on for the misses ?
@@JackMackWoodturning Hi Jack one day i will make one I'm not as good as you i only do it as a hobby
I bet you would pull it off if you gave it a try
@@JackMackWoodturning thanks for the encouragement I can't wait for your next project bye for now
Your imagination is a wondrous gift, your creativity and strength a blessing, great work Jack, beautiful 😀
Nice one J. Glad you enjoyed it 😊👍🏻
That's niiiice! Slick! Love the colors!

Stunning, impressive way to make a bowl
Nice one David. Much appreciated 😊👍🏻
Beautiful bowl great turning 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks buddy, do you think you resin wax the right colour choice ?
@@JackMackWoodturning Yes I do
Thanks man. I wasn’t 100% but it is certainly growing on me 😊
I was impressed by the idea of a table then you hit it out of the park! Fantastic piece of art.
Thanks buddy, do you think you resin wax the right colour choice ?
@@JackMackWoodturning You are the artist and everyone has their preferences. Green isn’t my go to for the aged apple or black ash but rather a complimentary dark pearl gold. I just think it provides a subtle enhancement to the natural marvel of those woods. You are creative with a great eye but as importantly the skill to execute the design. Cheers!
Thanks. I agree with your choice of colour, I did similar on my “a very risky bowl” .. I often prefer subtle use of resin.
As always another beautiful piece.
Cheers bill, you think the resin was the right colour ?
This is beautiful! The bowl looks like a river is running through it! Wonderful craftsmanship. I hope you have an outlet to sell your art.
I have many outlets thanks. Glad you like it. Was the resin the right colour for you ?
I started watching that and i thought "thats going to be one very shallow platter" how wrong was I. As always just great to watch and learn brilliant piece, also loved the blue coloured resin looks very much like a glacial river. Just love it
Thanks bud. Have you made a bowl from a board before? Great process
@@JackMackWoodturning I havent but there is a guy at our wood turning club who turns some out that are very different made from various woods, all very clever
Give it a go. Great way to use up all those off cuts
Didn't have to watch to end to know this would be beautiful!
Very nice work!
Thank you.. I’m glad you enjoyed it
One of my favorite pieces of yours so far!
That was amazing but I think all your work is just that.❤️
Thank you, do you think the resin is the right colour?
@@JackMackWoodturning it’s a wonderful color. Not quite apple green but nonetheless beautiful. I’d buy it for sure.❤️
I see you've been practicing lathe sorcery. Great vid!
Iv been trying yeah . You think I’m pulling it off ?
Not only is that a fantastic job the finish is putting it over the top.
You think the finish is good ?
@@JackMackWoodturning Is it perfect no could it be better with more work yes but it is a lot better that some of the things some of the things I have seen on UA-cam.
That turned out amazing. By far one of my favorites
Me too.. definitely one of my faves too.. but didn’t get many views at all
Great job mate. Looks great and very innovative the way you cut the segments.
Cheers buddy. You think the resin colour was right ?
@@JackMackWoodturning yes I liked the resin colour.
brilliant idea,fabulous wood and beautiful result...its gorgeous...😍😍😍

Just wow!!! 😱 Absolutely amzing!!
On a side note, I noticed your Henry vacuum. I have only seen them in Namco arcades! 😂
Haha, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.. 😊👍🏻
I like the little jig for holding your angle on the first cut.
When you first started the project I thought you were making one of those tables and I was disappointed because I wanted your ‘best idea’ to be turning 😳
Bowl turned out okay.😄
Only okay ? 😉
Now that was imaginative! Way to innovate!
Thanks Ted. Much appreciated my man 👍🏻😊
@@JackMackWoodturning No problem! Mind if I ask where you got those jigs you put your tools in to sharpen? I have a Wen wet grinder, but it only came with stuff for sharpening knives, and those disks that were on the outside of your strop? That looked cool.
Thanks!
Thats amazing such an interesting idea and it turned out soooo beautiful.
Thanks sue. Would you have this in your house ?
@@JackMackWoodturning yes, I love it, it would look lovely as a center peice.
@@JackMackWoodturning oh and im sorry but im not sue im sara lol im sure you meant to say thank you not thank sue lol love your work keep it up your so talented.
Gorgeous, one of the nicest resin based projects I’ve seen
Thanks a lot. Much appreciated 😊👍🏻
Very nice piece
Jolly good show
Thanks
Thanks John. Website is live now buddy if you fancy a look. This piece sold though unfortunately. jackmackwoodturning.com
Beautiful bowl. I like how you staggered the placement of the two sides.😉
Thanks Liz. Much appreciated 😊👍🏻
Absolutely stunning
Thanks buddy. What do you think about the colour of resin? Too much? Or just right ?
You have outdone yourself, Sir. 🧐
👍🏻
Absolutely gorgeous bowl Jack.
Nice one Jack. Glad you think so 😊👍🏻
Beautiful wood and color combo. Very stunning 😍 💖
Thanks buddy. Would you have this piece in your home ?
@@JackMackWoodturning I would have all of your pieces if I had lots and lots of money. 😆 🤣
Very cool! Strange how the blue resin turned into a jade color. Looks really nice with the color of the wood. Looking into the bowl seems almost like a coral reef. Half expecting to see fish darting around in it.
Yeah Ken, when I finished it I kicked back with a cuppa and looked over at it on the bench, light shining through it and thought to my self… I’m sure that resin was blue ( with a hint of green)
60 ml blue dye and 15ml green.. I guess there’s a obvious explanation if you understand colour mixing.. I should as my dad is a screen printer and sign writer… il have to ask him.. or wait for someone in the know to explain it
Nice job! A great way to maximize a beautiful slab of wood. I plan to use your ring method in a future bowl. I was thinking that a strip of double stick tape on the backing board would hold the rings in place while cutting the remaining rings, or maybe a few dabs of caulk. Keep up the good work.
Thanks. When cutting a piece like this free hand it’s useful to take the piece out to measure the face of the far side and use that to plan your next cut. There are many ways to do it.
Stunning piece!
Absolutely beautiful!
Thanks buddy. Would you have it in your home?
@@JackMackWoodturning
Absolutely!
Very good idea and very cool, great job on another stunning piece.
Cheers mark. You watched them all yet ? 😆
@@JackMackWoodturning Oh there is still a couple I have to watch but I'm getting there...I saw the new one and had to give it a watch.
Yes indeed Jack! That turned out nicely.. The grain and rings with the emerald highlight is awesome 👍 one of the greats! I saw the custom stool you made in the background.. Sweet! Be well man... 😃
Thanks buddy. Yeah the stool
Was mad for the work shop.. so much more comfortable than my last one 😆
Another beauty, Jack.

Cheers Ron, you think the resin was the right colour?
@@JackMackWoodturning - Yes, loved it. Very beautiful piece. You are a true artist. Way above an old cabinet maker like me. Good show
Wow what a piece of art🤗
Beautiful work as always!
Thanks Rachel. Did you like the green? I’m not sure now
Gorgeous!!! Wow wow wow!
Thanks 😊 What do you make at woodpecker crafts?
Stunning piece, the wood figuring alone is amazing and coupled with the resin is just a perfect combination.
I like the method of creating the rings, but hate the idea of having to unmount/mount each time a ring is cut ... could be simpler to use a longworth chuck to hold the piece.
Now all I need is some wood, some resin, a bandsaw and a longworth chuck!!!
Do you mean to use a self centring chuck on the tailstock in place of the centring plate?
@@JackMackWoodturning Sorry, not clear enough, I'm talking about the initial cutting of the rings ... it seems like a chore to have to undo the bolts each time a new ring is cut and needs to be removed ... was trying to think of how the process could be sped up.
A longworth chuck might allow quicker dismount/mount, but wasn't sure if it would secure the piece enough to handle the cutting of the rings.
Once again, thank you for taking the time to reply and impart knowledge :)
Great job! You took that process to the next level, Jack. Well done.
Thanks jay. What about the resin colour? Too much ?
Somehow skipped the video when it was almost towards the end. Came back just to hit like button.

It’s apple burl. What’s your favourite wood ?
I love knotty pine. I was at my sister’s this week and cut a limb from her Apple tree because I like the look of it inside! She thinks I’m weird. But for 2 years she has been telling me she is going to cut so it’s not in the way when she mows. I just helped her out. 😁
This is so sublime. I love your creative process. Beautiful piece.
