@lako lako Maybe.... The company that retails them for $225 may have spent a ton of money R+D. Maybe the $25 stole the design. These are all questions that we have to ask. If this was a VCDS tool, Id happily spend the money. Here I am mixed. And probably a hypocrite LOL

I'm 99% sure they came from the same factory. Both are made in China by factory we'll call X. The cheap ones were ordered in bulk from X by some company A that sells them on ebay. The second was ordered by some company B to be made to higher standards and the X just polished it (removing some metal, hence wiggle) and painted it gloss. Afterwards the B decided that their paddle shifters are the best on the market and require a hefty premium. Also since they're more expensive it means less customers, so smaller orders, so more expensive, you get the feedback loop. In the end B ends up charging a lot more than A for a product that's marginally better. That's how those things happen.

No I don't think they are. The cheaper ones are likely cast and pressed however the expensive ones are likely CNC Milled. These processes are vastly different and while casting is much cheaper, it is only feasible for high quantity production. My guess is that the expensive ones were a specially milled, low production design and model which the cheaper ones copied and mass-produced for a lower cost.

I'm surprised more manufacturers don't put more effort into paddle shifter design and quality on performance vehicles. That's one thing Alfa got right on the Giulias equipped with paddles. The OEM aluminum paddles look and feel amazing. Also, $250 for those paddles is ridiculous. Even if it's entirely manufactured in the U.S. it shouldn't be anywhere near that price. For $240 I bought an entire coolant reroute kit that was CNC machined and anodized in the U.S.

I got the stick on kind (look exactly like the ones you didn't install, but mine had the right cup shape) for $10 on aliexpress. The machined edge gives a glare at certain angles, which I don't like, otherwise I think they fit in nicely with the Mk7 GTI since it has that brushed aluminum style finish where the R has the piano black. I was also worried about them falling off, especially with this summer heat. But I gave the factory ones a good cleaning with alcohol to get all the dirt and oil off before the install, and the 3M has served me well for 6 months so far. Of course, they're probably going to fall off when I get back into my GTI later today - but if that happens I think I might snag a set of those $25 ones.

Does each paddle button card have two actual buttons wired in parallel for redundancy? It looked like it.

    • @FeralEngineer
      @FeralEngineer 5 років тому +1

Sure, it's an interesting design. On Mk6 there is a single big button on the PCB. By the way, speaking of redundancy - the paddle shifters on MK6 are interestingly overengineered. They have a logic PCB inside them that modulates a signal within a 3-wire LIN-bus, dedicated for each shifter and controlled by "media buttons / paddles controller" that further converts all the inputs i to CAN-bus signals. The controller governs two completely separate LIN-buses, one for the left shifter and the other for the right shifter, but also has resistance-measuring circuits for multimedia buttons. This way, the electronic protection against paddle shifter malfunctions (switch stuck on, switch stuck off, unstable signal, paddle shifter disconnected, more than 1 wire is broken) is made on program level. If the controller detects such an event, it will immediately deactivate the problematic paddle shifter and write down an error with the exact cause of malfunction.

Hi, thanks to your video I managed to get mine installed lol. But they’re a little wiggly. Now I was wondering how could I correct that issue, do you have any ideas? Thanks in advance for your answer and thank you again for the video!

I bought a set of the cheap ones from Ali Express for the princely sum of £10.27 including delivery! Identical to the ones in your video. Feel bad for Racingline who obviously did the original r&d but if they didn’t put such a huge mark up on them (they are £199 in the Uk) I might have bought theirs.

Hey Charles, I bought some similar paddle extensions for my 2015 TDI. It’s also a DSG, but after closer inspection, I can’t seem to locate the same pin to replace them, I figured since they’re both a DSG, it would work on the TDI, but I’m not finding that to be true. Is there another way to remove the stock paddles? Is it possible the pin is there but just hidden behind portions of the steering wheel? Or will this just not work on a TDI? Thanks

Wondering if anyone else is feeling issues with their MK7.5 GTI. I’ve got a 2019 GTI Autobahn manual with 25,000k and the electronic steering is acting up. Fluctuates between stiffer to loose randomly during all types of conditions. Can feel it give in the wheel and is a bit unnerving to feel on the hwy during long sweeping corners and can feel at slow speeds too. Wondering if Charles has an idea or is a known issue. A trip to the dealership is in store but would like to be informed.

Never ran into that on any car with electromechanical power steering.

gloss ones look like billet alloy, the matt ones look like cast alloy and would be weaker. the lines on the back indicate a 10% difference in design defeating pattern design

Had the stick on ones on my GTI for about two years and my Tiguan R for almost 12 months, still holding as strong as ever and look and feel fantastic! Just need to make sure you get the correct ones.

Just an FYI. I just bought the cheapos off Amazon. There was a bit of play after installation, so I pulled the pins back out and wrapped them in teflon tape. I wrapped it thicker toward the end of the pin that is inserted first, and the play is now gone.

the chap express versions fitted super fast and feel magic, I do not see the point in spending another $200 for the more expensive set when there both aluminium and the same profile,. For $225 id expect carbon fibre

I had the stick on ones. They stay on just fine. They are too thick though. My fingers keep brushing against the back when going for the turn signal. I took them off and got the Mountune52 ones. I did think about getting the R Line copies...but I read about the fitment being hit or miss. If I did get them and they had a poor fit...there could be a big headache trying to exchange something from China.

Any chance these would fit a MK6 GTI? All i can find is the MK7 fitment.. Wondered if it's the same mechanics, ie pin fitment etc?

I got the stick on ones for my mk7 and they fit pretty well. I just wish they had that style for the replacements and not just the stick on

The stick-on paddle extenders in the video are for a Mk6 style steering wheel. Sadly, on Mk6 all paddle extenders are stick-on because the shift button design prevents punching out the paddle retainer hinge without removing an airbag, then media-button assembly, and finally unscrewing the paddle shifter assemblies. Not every driver is ready to do all this in order to install a convenience accessory, so manufacturers stick to a stick-on option.

Don't know about the 7.5 but I drove an r-line mk 7 which had a gunmetal-look dash instead of piano-fingerprint, that gunmetal on the shifters would look awesome.

Does anyone know a set that fits a mk6 2013 that’s an install and not a stick on? I bought the ones he had the first ones that stick on and guess what they don’t work at all don’t even stick on I thought about maybe using double sided tape but decided to just toss them after seeing them fall off multiple times

I may be wrong, but it appears the cheaper ones look like they were cast and the more expensive ones were machined from billet. They should function exactly the same as long as the cast ones were done well.

Ive noticed that if you use the very ends of the paddle, it binds and doesnt shift. Im wondering if Racelines looseness means it doesnt bind. Maybe same, worth a note.
