The MPAA rating is destroying an entire movie genre (at least what will be seen by its primary demographic at theaters) by imposing ridiculous demands on horror filmmakers to water down intense scenes...the essence of this genre. It's like demanding that comedy directors make funny scenes less funny. Thankfully, there is a growing outlet for uncut horror on streaming services.
The movie should have used the song "bye bye bye" by N*sync.

I remember seeing this in theaters. When it was over, I heard someone in the back say "wow, that was bad."
That's a shame, because the original account of it was really interesting. "The President's Vampire".
In the book, a group of people tried to come up with a sort of urban myth or group hallucination, and ended up scaring the hell our of themselves.
While the concept sounded interesting, the fucking advertising for this stupid film instantly ruined any chance of me watching it. Like am I the only one who hates whenever they show the monster in the FUCKING TRAILER! But what absolutely killed it was when they compared the "Bye Bye Man" to Jason... -_-
Honestly the best way I saw this film working was if it was focused around one character who was the only one to see the "Bye Bye Man" because it was a very long time night horror he would constantly experience, the character is so haunted by it that he's actually going insane. But that's just my idea. (And while I don't like kids, there would have to be a childhood backstory that shows how he got the horror of the "Bye Bye Man")

When you chose which movies you want to see, you read the reviews and listen to the words of mouth. Normal intelligence...
Why have R as a rating if it's not used?
It was originally advertised as an R rated film. But, then the studios decided they wanted that PG-13 rating to get teenagers in the theaters. That is what he was saying. A PG-13 horror film can be very effective if it is filmed to be PG-13. But, this one was shot as an R rated movie, and they cut a bunch of stuff out to get the rating down.
Nic Winstead Art here is what gets me upset about editing r rated films to pg-13. The marvel movies, with the exception of deadpool, are completely fine as pg-13 films, but if you have a film where there is a lot of violence and people getting shot, just go all the way and make it r. Don't try to censor the violence when ever we see waves of people dying, because it's just dumb.
As a teenager, i am offended that hollywood's bigwigs assume that i can't get into R rated movies just fine.
carlosdafox The trend of PG-13 horror began during my high school years and I fucking hated back them. The only thing I wanted to see as a weird 16 year old was blood and guts, Hollywood took that away from me.
DumbPunk seriously, I remember when I was sixteen and trying to get into a rated R movies. If we couldn't than we would try again another time. I'm not 16 anymore, but I'm pretty sure teenagers still do this. Hollywood needs to stop watering down their movies. If your making a movie that kids have no choice but to watch, once they get older the odds of them liking it is very slim, cuz they more than likely they didn't like it then either.

I don't even like the idea of the Bye Bye Man. What a stupid rule for a monster that anyone can accidentally think of it's name or say it. At least Candyman required you to say his name in front of a mirror repeatedly for him to be summoned.

Does it get revealed that the Bye Bye Man himself is the one who carved his name into that desk at the start? Because if not, why would anyone who was trying to stop the spread of his influence carve his name anywhere when they were writing "don't think it, don't say it" all over the place?
Going off the Double Toasted review, this seems like a problem throughout the movie too, as the main characters keep telling other people the guy's name when they know they shouldn't be doing it. I can put up with a bit of stupidity in my horror characters, but not that much.

VFX comment - as a VFX artist who has to do this stuff they sometimes do it in post so that the Director has control over the 'look'. However the time and money it takes to make this look truly realistic ends up having it being a false economy. HOWEVER the amount of times in MANY VERY FAMOUS films we have to repair onset special effects, costume malfunctions, etc is beyond the pale. I recently worked on a MASSIVE TV show for a pretty well known online channel and spent weeks repairing wigs that were f*cked up onset. So swings and roundabouts.
Apparently, or so I heard elsewhere on UA-cam, it originated from an urban legend. The basic story, as I recall, was the BBM was a disfigured serial killer, who travelled by rail like a hobo with his dog. He came to his end (somehow) , but could be summoned by his name. I am sure I've probably messed this up in the retelling, but I'm pretty sure that was the gist of it. I think he was mentioned in a book about a American urban legends.
The story you're looking for is "The Bridge to Body Island" by Robert Damon Schneck. You can look on Audible, just put in the author's name and you will see "The Bye Bye Man and other stories" by the author. Just thought you would want to know if you didn't already.
From what I heard this is based off of a book. It's based off of a two sentence story in a "Ghosts & Urban Legends of the South" type of book. The Bye Bye Man has a 2 Sentence Origin.
So many unanswered questions: Where did the Bye Bye Man come from? What was with the coins? What's with the dog? Why was this godawful movie made? Either a lot got lost in translation, or they were counting on this being successful and planned on answering the questions in the sequel. Here's an idea. Hire Mike Flanagan and have him write and direct a prequel. He took the steaming pile of cinematic feces that was Ouija and made a prequel that was one of the best movies of 2016. I have no doubt that he could make a prequel to The Bye Bye Man that would be nothing short of amazing.

I will never understand dulling down a n R-rated movie to a PG-13 unless it can be done well. A lot of movies get an NC-17 rating first time then they can tweak and scale to an R, usually without the film suffering. It's like with PG-13 they lose sight of the big picture and just want that rating though
There will be an uncensored DVD/bluray and it will be a lot better than the theatrical release.
Honestly, I don't think anything can save that hot garbage can of a script or the wooden acting. They may fix a few of the choppy edits, but, I don't see any way they can fix the movie.
The home release has cg blood added. Not very convincing cg either. I guess it's better than bloodless shotgun blasts, but... :\

Well occasionally movies released during the early part of year are surprisingly good, it's to be expected considering that January/February are the notorious dumping ground for movies that the studios think are going to suck.
The book is actually just a chapter out a strange but "true" story collection. So it's not actually a horror story in the book, more go a creepy "true" story. The book was originally called "The President's Vampire" now for the sake of movie marketing has been renamed "The Bye Bye Man."
I'm not opposed to PG13 horror, but they are still inferior to a Rated R horror.

I don't like to be prejudiced against movies before I see them, but...when I saw the similarities in the trailer between this and the first OUIJA movie, that decided me about waiting till Netflix for this.

The bye bye man could have worked as like a lore around slaves escaping the south through the Baltimore railroad (like Frederick Douglass). Maybe the bye bye man was an infamous slave catcher that collected coins for his bounties. Bye bye could be a corruption of the slave creole word babay, which also meant goodbye., or Bebe, which meant mute (like you can't speak his name). You'd have the librarian with an autobiography of her great grandma (a literate slave) telling the story about her encounter with the bye bye man. His real name was a closely guarded secret and he tortured slaves to make sure they never spoke it (so they called him bebe, babay or bye bye man). The film would be about the corrupting power of self interest, where the monster promises freedom from his eternal enslavement to characters that are willing to kill their loved ones. The hound could have a collar made of human teeth. The bye bye man would be condemned to have the branded tattoos of every slave he killed all over his body, and if he infected you, your back would grow a tree of whip induced scars. if anyone else thinks this piece of shit is salvageable and you're as bored as me, let me know if you guys have ideas.
! think the story comes from a book about American urban legends. Don't remember the title of the novel only that it was "weirdly" funny. Also, I saw an ad on UA-cam for an unrated version, once. The infuriating thing about this movie was the marketing, which made the film much scarier looking.

And... although I didn't see any of the marketing, but I hear there was a lot of manipulation of scenes... i.e. scenes were changed during the marketing of the movie to make it seem more scary(?).

Nothing to save. The genre does just fine on the profit side with those Blumhouse jump-scare marathon movies or found footage flicks made for the cheap. This genre is probably the most consistent as long as they keep their budgets small. If you mean by quality.... eye of the beholder or what this channel is predicated upon. Bad for some can be good for others.

I was looking up the book the other day too and you can find the story in two books by Robert Damon Schneck. I'm real curious since I guess he's also in some group that assists people who have witnessed supernatural instances, so I was hoping this was maybe some story based on some kind of "true story".

This is on Netflicks atm, and i have been tempted to watch it. I am glad i haven't. Maybe you could do a few of the Netflicks films, i know there are channel's that do, but i love how you do your reviews.
It actually wasn't bad. Flawed, yes, but fine. There are much much worse horror movies out there, than Bye Bye Man. Just don't expect too much of it.

for movies rated R in the U.S, they come to Australia with a MA15 rating. when something is R rated here you know there is going to be a lot of gore and other stuff.
so having said this, it really sucks when an U.S R rated film is chopped down to PG ratings before it gets here. this movie was selling at local supermarkets and my eldest daughter said it was Lame for the exact same reasons you mentioned. not even the so called jump scares made any of us react.

If you do not want anyone to think of or say "the bye bye man", then here's a great piece of advice: DO NOT CUT IT INTO A DRAWER FOR ANYONE TO FIND!!!!!!!!! Also, if I were the lead character (I can't remember his his name in the movie), I would have stolen Dead File 69 and I would have ripped it into shreds and burned it to a crisp, then I would have taken the drawer with "the bye bye man" cut into it outside and I would have chopped it into pieces with an ax and burned it. PROBLEM SOLVED!

If I were in this position, Id try to negotiate with the villain to continuously say it's name over and over to grow it's power in exchange for safety and immunity of the psychological horrors.
Watch Kill Bill on tv. they edit it the same way. they zoom in so you can't see the graphic violence.

This is a "F--k you it's January!" movie.
Two guys 1 girl....NEVER ENDS WELL.
Here is how they should have done it, it isn't a perfect script but I will try: A child brutally beaten and forgotten by his parents leaves the house and runs away to a train far away from them as quickly as possible. There he meets a stray young puppy that comforts him, both eventually leave the train and get to the same area in the movie. The boy isn't really doing well from the beatens he received from his parents, not only that he gets nightmares about them from the bullying to torture which makes him feel uneasy. The boy also steals food and supplies to maintain himself along with his dog. The police goes after him and tells him what his doing and where are is his parents. The boy cries and tells them he doesn't want to go with his parents because of the way he was treated. The cops take him to his new parents and arrest the original ones. Fast forward, the boy is now a grown man who is driven insane by the nightmares and his past including the bullies in school because of the nightmares. Also, the kids with his new parents weren't very kind to the kid for the was. The man his taunted by the little kids (the cast in the movie) laughing at him constantly calling him a coward or sissy and so the man angered by this beats the kids and carves the walls with the words BYE BYE in blood and stalks them when his parents aren't there in a secret place underneath the basement. The kids tell their parents one day and the parents kick him out of the house and is arrested. It wasn't so long from his sentence was over and was treated by someone but despite this he still had the nightmares inside his head. Soon after that, he was taken off the treatment and was discharge for his actions. The man then goes to other people's homes and does the samething weird things until he is killed by a group of parents. Before that, He meets with a witch in a ally where he tells him to take the nightmares away from him haunted by them. The man takes away the nightmares but tells him that when he the spirit of his old parents which are now dead ( From the death sentence in prison from what they did in beginning.) will take over his body. The man though didn't believe this. After this, the man is almost attacked by a group of parents but his protected by his dog until he is killed alongside his him. one of them say bye bye to him before he is killed, coincidentally connect the BYE BYE theme. *So the parents persona and the man's goes after all the families that are connected to all the ones that killed him. The parents and the man's persona call himself BYE BYE MAN for the what happen to his son and all the bullying he received by those words BYE BYE. Some parents are arrested for the crime and others are yet to be caught. Some get killed by the persona through nightmares and others through the boy as the one in the beginning. The BYE BYE MAN kills not only through dreams but while your awake. The deaths look like normal incidents such as crashing, suicide, and ect. The boy in dreams and awake always take them to the train, the parents slowly die by him one by one and now the kids that are now grown up are next for the BYE BYE MAN LIST, THE END.*
The Unrated cut is better; they should've stuck with the R-rating.

The studio screwed this movie before it was released. I don't get why studio execs think this is a good idea of taking a movie that was obviously meant to be an R-rated one and trimming it down further for a limp wrist PG-13.
