- 2013 F150 DIY 4x4 Transfer Case Fluid Change
Video shows how to change your transfer case fluid in your Ford F150. Shows the tools and supplies you will need.
Wanted to show everyone that this is easy and you can do it in your driveway. Save some money and do it yourself rather than paying the dealer. This video shows you exactly what you need.
Did it and if I can do it, any one should be able to do it.
This is the link to the transfer case fluid I used geni.us/UIG4i
Ford has discontinued the XL12, and now it requires the Mercron LV linked above.

I really appreciate the vids. I have a 2013 F-150 4X4 Crew cab with 55,500 miles, so I am doing some routine maintenance recently myself. Your videos have been great. Also, I live in Monroe, LA and you don't sound like a native South LA coona** to me! Where do you live?
Thanks for the support. We live in Mandeville. My wife is from Louisiana, I am a damn Yankee as my Father-in-law calls me. We live in Mandeville.
Dude you are like the funniest and most real mechanic I’ve seen online for this truck and we are so grateful to have your vids!!
excellent video! Most helpful...your intentions are noble, you do it 'cause you enjoy it as I'm sure most of the people watch do as well. Thank you so much, keep it up!
Thanks for watching.. I really appreciate the support..
Dude! So glad I found your channel. Top Notch!
Owner of a 2013 F150. Following you so I can do all this myself. Just hit 90k miles!
Greatly appreciate your videos, my 2010 f150 stx and my wife thank you!!😁
Where did you go to get the aftermarket dipstick and filler tube?
The "shift on the fly" transfer case takes XL-12 fluid and the "torque on demand" transfer case takes Mercon LV fluid. 8:03. Very good video, thank you!
This is great save a lot of money!!! Thanks for sharing it!
Good Luck. If you haven't, please subscribe. I have a few more maintenance video's that I will be posting shortly...
Yes, you are definitely helping.

Another great job😎
Thanks
Thank you for watching.
Great video by the way please make more!
Thank you so much for useful information
Wow that oil looks great!
Thanks for the video.
I would just like to verbalize to always loosen the fill plug first. Make sure you can remove it BEFORE draining the case.
Good advice. I should have mentioned!
Yep because if you can't get the fill plug out your in trouble
Most late since the 90s transfer cases that use light lube oil and have a aluminum case will have a internal oil lube pump.
Great tip!!
great video.
Nice Video 👍
"If my dumb ass can do it, anybody can do it! hahaha I love this guy humbleness and vids. You're awesome! Subscribed.
Much appreciated...
Great video. Thank you.

Good video Amijo
Good video thank you
THANK YOU.
that fluid looked really good for 90k miles. Very good actually.
Thanks For The Video'
Thanks for watching.
Do you have videos on front and rear diffs oil changing. And I heard you mention the automatic transmission fluid change? Great video's. You save alot of people money. Cheers
thanks man
Look at the bottom of your truck! Wow, 90k miles and in great shape. Up in here in Canada, the winters are hard on vehicles with all the salt, etc and things corrode and look like crap after that many miles.
I understand I grew up in the salt belt.. thanks for commenting.
Great video! I plan to do this on my 2010 Expedition. Is your truck AWD like mine. It looks like mine in your video.
That's amazing. Would that be the same for a 2014 f150?
"If my dumb ass can do it, anybody can do it" you're the real MVP sir
Thank you. But a very true statement.. thanks for watching, and I hope it helped you.
good video but make sure you get the right fluid in your video you have transfer case fluid ..I have a 2011 ford f150 4x4 at for they say u have to use transmission lu fluid so I phoned other dealers and yes its true ford has gone to use trans fluid in transfer cases so if your not sure give them a call cause maybe certain year of truck maybe newer use that....
We’re did you get the trany fill tube. Need one.
Did you happen to get any noise when you first started driving the truck around again I got like a hum for a mile or two while the fluid was getting on all the gears I guess just wondering if you did?
tell me about this hand pump you used to fill it man. where's the amazon affiliate link to that? I'll buy.
i live in Vancouver Canada I love the cold weather im not a good fan of hot heat but vehicle here rust so fast they turn into powder from the road salt and all..lol
Guess plumbers tape or anything isn’t needed for that drain plug? Also is there link to that pump you have? Seemed to work good
I asked my nearby dealer for transfer case fluid and they gave me auto trans fluid instead, it’s the same thing or different?
What the torque specs on those two nuts
I bought me 2013 used, how do I know which transfer case I have… which fluid?
I’m planning on doing this , thus weekend. What size bolt for the transfer case fill plug and drain plug ?
The plug is 3/8". Just use the end of your 3/8" ratchet or ratchet with a 3/8" extension. No socket is needed. Thanks for watching.
My Torino thanks, will do
good job.. Quick tip... Dont remove the skid pan and use a long piece of cardboard and fold it length way and make a small trough open the plug and run it down the trough
Thanks for watching its greatly appreciated.
What's the advantage this way? Just curious.
@@kbpl369 Less things you have to dismantle. Just saves time... nothing special
Do you have any maintance schedule for f150 to replace fluids ...
You can look up your specific vehicle here... owner.ford.com/tools/account/maintenance/maintenance-schedule.html Thanks for watching and commenting.
I have a 2013 f150 some people are saying the use full synthetic transmission fluid for the transfer case and that's supposedly better what are your thoughts? Thanks in advance
Personally I hardly ever use 4wheel drive. So I usually just use the specified Motorcraft fluid. That’s my 2 cents. Good Luck and thanks for watching.
It depends on what transfer case you have. The Ford F-150 manual list 2 different ones; the ESOF transfer case takes the XL-12 fluid, and the "torque on demand" transfer case takes Mercon LV fluid. He's exactly right at 8:03.
I have a 2010 f150 FX4, and is leaking oil between the transmission and transfer case,it’s leaking where the bolts are, the bolts that are holding together the transmission and transfer case.any suggestion? There is a seal between transmission and transfer case?
Probably the gasket.
The gasket from rear transmission, Or the gasket between transfer case and transmission?
The rear transmission seal or the front transfer case seal. Those are the donut shaped seals that go around the output and input shafts. You’d have to separate the transfer case from the transmission to get to them. I don’t think there’s a gasket between the transmission and transfer case. It would serve no purpose because there is an air space between the two.
Would you be able to show where the transmission output sensor is
I know this is an old comment, but it’s molded into the lead frame inside the trans
How many Miles must have a ford f150 3.7 V6 to change the transfer case fluid?
I would think the same as the 5.0
50 to 60k Im doing mine this weekend, same engine, 2011 model engine.
What oil is for a , ford f150 2009 4x4 and
Thanks
If you are asking about the transfer case it needs the Ford Transfer Case Fluid XL-12. Here is a link to the Owners Manual. It is on page 394 www.fordservicecontent.com/Ford_Content/catalog/owner_guides/09f12og3e.pdf
Thanks
Do you know if ford motor c. Has discontinued XL-12 for transfer case????
I dont think so..If you find out that they have, please post it here. Thanks,
On Monday I went to the ford dealer to buy Transfer case oil and the parts guys told me that ford stop making xl-12 oil for transfer case, and they gave me transmission oil to put in to transfer case , but I haven’t put that oil , cause I hear that transmission oil will damage transfer case.
@@stevealbarran I just followed the link to Amazon and you can still but it there.I cant imagine that they discontinued it since it is called for in millions of trucks.. Good Luck.
My Torino I know, but I think those parts guys from that dealer they don’t know nothing about cars,
That I agree with. They just want to sell you something.. good Luck
I love you already I'm a great mechanic like you I make things last longer if I can help you let me know
Ford dealerships said LV and also said they don’t cary that transfer case fluid, only lv
wow and they charge you hr labour at shop to flush this
The top plug is the air whole to flow faster and your fill from bottom until it comes out of the top plug
Well shit I dont have a skid plate previous owner or dealer must of forgot to put it back on
$265 at ford dealership, CA
I always loosen the fill plug first, especially on older vehicles. If you drain the fluid and then cannot remove the fill plug...you're f...ed!
Very good point. Thanks for sharing..
dealer is trying to charge me $100 to do this on my 2010 Raptor :).
Glad I could help. Thank for watching.
Don’t do what he just did. You bottom those out and you’re likely to crack that aluminum case. The torque spec is very low.
Like these videos. Ford is trying to make it harder for DIY mechanics to work on their vehicles. So they're building fuel filters inside the damn gas tank and other crap. Ford better smarten up. People are already pissed that they donate so much money to Democrats. They keep this up, people will begin buying Dodges or something else.
Thanks for the positive comments. I agree, they do stupid shit and then expect the people to keep buying their stuff. My wife's fusion sport has been in the shop since last weds. because its "composite" i.e. plastic oil pan is leaking. Who could have seen that coming.. Happy New Years, and thanks for watching and commenting.
GET a LIFE. Not everything in life is political. Your imagination is running wild....... dumb ass comment
@@cwqrpportable Everything is political, you absolute buffoon. From the TV shows people watch, to the airline industry. They're all giving money to ultra left wing causes. If you haven't realized that yet, you're blind and naive.
