2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class vs Bentley Flying Spur review | The world's best luxury saloon? | Autocar

- There are two very cool, very new luxury saloons in town.
One is the 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the one they throw all the technology at to make it widely regarded as the best big saloon/sedan/whatever you'd like to call it. S-Classes come with all kinds of engine, right up to and including very powerful petrol ones, but this is a little more straightforward - it's an S400d. Actually an engine that suits it rather well. It costs £104,425, has 330hp and more importantly a mammoth cruising range.
The other car is still relatively new too, and it's more expensive and luxurious still. It's a Bentley Flying Spur and as a W12 it costs £168,300 and has 635bhp - figures both rather bigger than the S-Class's, but don't let semantics get in the way - more expensive S-Classes are available and a cheaper Flying Spurs are too (besides, there's a reason for the mis-match explained in the vid).

"When you're in the back of the S-class people will assume that you've been taken to the airport. And in the Bentley people will assume you've taken to the Opera" that's a wonderful conclusion 👌

The Mercedes Maybach S Class would be a fairer comparison to the Bentley
True but it’s still the same car, in a different trim level. While the drivetrain is different the criticisms levelled against its interior and implementation of technology, and arguably technology for technologies sake, would remain entirely valid.
As a huge S-Class fan, I think S-Class is an S-Class. It's a lovely and capable all rounder. But people buy Bentley or Rolls because they like the brand and the character of the products. Even when one day, the S-Class is better in every single measurable way, the Bentley and Rolls' customers would still be loyal with them
@S Club 7 But also much more expensive. You only pay for the Bentley name
Even a top spec S class would make a fair comparison. the wood is not the optional designo trim. There is even better leather options too. But as he mentioned they couldn't pick the Maybach so they went with this one.
@@MauriceBln1 pls a Bentley is better than a mayback 2021 no argument the new s class looks ugly cheap and overdoing compared to the beautiful elegant 2020 model
After looking at screens all day, the S Class interior would give me screen fatigue.
@Emad Ahmed does one need all that tech and features?
It seems you are overwhelmed by tecnology. A Ford will do it for you.
@@ernstschwaig4667 It is scientifically proven that too much tech makes people lazy and is detrimental to mental health.
Those screens will make me dizzy. I am one of those old school people who enjoy connection with the car, the road and the environment. A sanitised environment is just not for me. I hope BMW doesn't go the same route the damned screens. Imagine the wiping you have to do all the time.
@Tanish Pugalia Did you notice the Bentley info screen is on a revolver where you can hide / replace it with a wood panel or 3 analog gauges. Luxury = not being in a computer lab on wheels. Mercedes overdid the tech in your face design aesthetic
Couldn't agree more with Matt. I love Mercedes but the Bentley is in a totally different league. The huge touch screens are a massive turn off for me...and when this car is twenty years old it will be like buying an i phone 4 today...the Bentley will still be pure class.
If you're using a 20 year old luxury car, maybe you don't have the money to buy a good car. No one with that mindset buys these. And please don't talk about vintage value now. 20 years isn't event nearly enough for that. A 20 year old Bentley or S class is what really poor people buy.
@@varunkamal91 I drive a 22 year old BMW E38 7 series and it's still better than most new cars today.
@@Dan_druft those are your enjoying talking.. things like "feel", it being cheaper... Is it actually faster? More comfortable? Better suspension? Better in what measurable way? And even if you do find it better emotionally, I said people who buy new flagship cars wouldn't care about how it would be 20 years later. In 20 years businesses grow, income grows. They'd have sold it way before that and bought the newest latest and greatest luxury vehicle.
@@varunkamal91 I don't care, I could afford to buy a luxury car new but the depreciation scares me. My E38 is the coolest looking saloon car ever made. I get compliments about it all the time.

Don't know why. But the fact the wood on the rotating screen is a different colour because it's not in the sun as much. Would drive me insane
It shouldn’t have aged that quickly. I spotted that and would be returning it for rework. The lacquer does age over time but we are talking years, it shouldn’t be like that so soon.
its also not true.
I agree. It looked terrible for this money
Doubt it is because of the sun, because the windows all have UV-protection. Probably just a piece of wood that doesn't match or an anomaly in the production process.
Whether it's the sun or not (I don't think it is, given uv protection the windows provide), it drove me nuts in both shots, too.
This isn't fair actually because you can't compare the Flying Spur to the S class unless its the Maybach Version
Still not comparable
these cars shouldnt be compared like this anyway
They are best in their own class, we shouldn't compare these legends

Another reason not to watch Autocar
S-Class has lost it's road presence with the entry-level looking front
The Bentley is effortlessly superior in all ways!
I totally agree
And also the price is two times superior...
The Bentley interior will still look elegant and classy in 50 years. The S-class' interior will fade horribly in less than 10.
It really depends on the care
That deep kitchen sink infront of the driver display on the S class is an eyesore 💆🏽♂️ I’m stressed 😫
I also don’t get it... it’s so strange... what is that for?
@@ruisantos8291 Heads-up Display
Ugly as hell. But functional. The whole panel is ugly.
Agree, I believe the touch, feel, and action of a well made machined button, toggle, switch, or jog wheel is part of the luxury experience
With permission of the S-class, which is an absolutely incredible car, I’d go for the Bentley whatsoever. No doubt about it👌🏻
The previous S Class had a better interior for me. It’s a nice car still - but there are areas where it can’t compete with the Bentley, not least rarity and image. And the Bentley interior is on another level. The technology has overtaken the rest of the car on the S Class, which is the total opposite of what a luxury car should be about.
Mercedes Maybach has way better image then rr and bentley since Mercedes literally invented the modern automobile so you can't beat that image and heritage
And Maybach is way more rare than rr and bentley since Maybach is limited production
S class interior is far superior than bentley and s class features and technology is light years ahead of rr and bentley combined
And yes luxury is largely about tech since it's technology that will make experience safer, more comfortable, more relaxing and more enjoyable etc which is what luxury is all about
@@eventusvantos2770 Sorry, you are wrong.
Mercedes sells hundreds of thousands of cars every year. They aren’t special anymore and haven’t been since arguably the 80’s. It’s just another mass volume manufacturer selling hatchbacks and diesels via PCP. Maybach is simply a trim level to an existing model. And Maybach isn’t rare. You should see the sales figures for Maybach in China alone, where they buy more Maybach’s than RR sell cars globally.
A large flat panel screen that is cheap to make and offers nothing in the way of craftsmanship is not luxury. The materials on the S Class are inferior to Bentley and RR.
@@rare6499 sorry you're the one that's wrong
Mercedes sells a lot and is the most valuable car company in the world precisely BECAUSE they're special
Eg just because sells a hatchback doesn't take any value away from their project one or amg gt black series or s class etc
So what if Maybach is an ultra luxury trim level? It's just like how amg is the sport trim level to Mercedes. It makes perfect sense since Mercedes is already so great so it's better to work off of what's already so good rather than trying
Yes Maybach is rare compared to rr and bentley since it's limited production
A large panel screen is NOT cheap to make especially not when it's integrated with the centre console and is parallel with the dashboard and packs more tech light years ahead of rr and bentley combined have
Wrong again. Mercedes has great materials and gorgeous open pore wood dashboard and far superior mood lighting which adds level of luxury rr and bentley can't touch
Especially Maybach which has even better materials than rr and bentley. Heck you even get alligator skin for crying out loud
So Maybach/Mercedes blows your bentley and rr out of the water in basically every single way all while being cheaper too
@@eventusvantos2770 this level of fanboyism is unhealthy. Maybach is an inferior brand in every single way to Bentley and RR. And Mercedes isn’t even on the same spectrum. And no, Maybach isn’t rare in comparison. Maybach is selling more than twice, more like three times the amount of cars to Rolls-Royce.
@@rare6499 says the extreme rr and bentley fangirl
Wrong. Mercedes is a superior brand especially with Maybach as trim level
You're right Mercedes isn't on same spectrum because Mercedes is in a league of its own way above bentley or rr could ever dream of
And yes Maybach is rare in comparison. Especially Pullman limo which is even more limited for which there isn't even an equivalent for from rr or bentley
Call me old fashioned but I love the look of buttons and switches on a dashboard. I like the feeling of sitting in a cockpit, not in front of a computer. That being said, looking forward to the AMG versions of that S class

The Bentley is miles ahead of the Mercedes, i know its more expensive but worth it. Very good presenter..
I love the Stance of Flying Spur
I just hate this interior, this new trend. Cheep lame touch "buttons", capacitive steeringwheel I bet is a nightmare to use, no decent volume knob and/or menu, scroll, adaptive cruise control buttons, etc. Just looked up the new Civic and HR-V interior, everywhere there are phisycal buttons, knobs, switches, still looks modern and gives You the satisfaction feeling you get by "clicking" them
I doubt that touching the cheap plastic button of a civic gives a satisfying feeling
But in the end Mercedes sells way more Maybachs than Bentley sells Flying Spurs

Soon, it will look like a Tesla as well.
Perfect analysis once again. Thank you Matt Prior. I would have the Bentley.
The S-Class is always designed to lead the automotive industry and present the latest technologies there is, which eventually is adopted by most if not all manufacturers. If you want a car from a previous era, then a Bentley would be a better fit. Luxury does not mean less technology it means different things to different people.

Here I am thinking that knowing how to drive was a requirement of having a license. But that's just me.
Sit in a restaurant with tv's.....when the conversation is taking a dip or even during a conversation notice how it will draw people's eyes. All around us we have screens these days distracting people. Whole families will sit around a table not saying a word because they are looking at screens in front or around them. In a car it also draw's your eye which is dangerous and so annoying because they just cant seem to push enough of them into a car when outside a car we already have too many. Its becoming like music in a shopping mall...every damn shop you walk into sounds like a club.....its becoming just a BIT TOO MUCH!
I agree! Luxury will be less screens. I want a mechanical masterpiece like a Rolex, not a digital Casio or an Apple watch that will be obsolete in 2 years.
Nope, screen is just for convenience. Mercedes has screens on the back seat of the car too, cause it was meant to be a chauffeur's car. And has a big screen on the front for the driver to control some appliances inside the car. Morever I have never heard of this type issue related to touchscreen, lol you're just making up. Listen, I'm not a Mercedes fanboy but I can say about what all you have said doesn't make sense and especially on a car which is tech loaded for the back seat, and has infotainment system on the back seats, what's the real problem is that the back seat passengers can very much anything on the car, like even having access on controling the driver's seat and operating sunroof cause it was meant for the luxury of some V.I.P's any damn rich or important person. We know that Bentley is more luxury and classy and provides better experience than the Mercedes S-class which is supposed to be elegant and feature loaded for the comfort of customers, but don't compare Bentley Flying Spur with Mercedes S-class in case of the technology and innovation it provides.

I think the previous gen S-class had the better interiors. The whole atmosphere was so soothing & shouted out 'this is what is called luxury'. I agree with the reviewer on the point that there is no replacement for tactile physical buttons for controlling something like the air conditioner or the volume controller because it's hard to navigate those options on the touch screens & aren't as handy. Mercedes shouldn't have focussed on upping the tech quotient to this extent, guess nowadays the definition or concept of futuristic automobiles is limited to plonking huge screens & adopting the minimalist approach for controls. It was already a stellar car in terms of luxury & comfort & I would have liked to see what more additions are done to improve the chauffeur driven experience because these cars are focussed to the rear seat experience more than the gizmo front. Nonetheless, it's a great product & will surely retain its title of the world's best car 😊
That S-class interior is such a tragedy.
At this level presence and prestige counts a lot, I know which one has more.
Well said on S class interior, I don’t like the new S class in any particular way especially since they tried to copy a Tesla interior 🙄

Tech today just add stress... Yep.
My m3e36 was the least stressful car I ever had.
My E91 is about as much tech as I need. It’s such an easy car to get along with.
Same with my 328i E36 convertible. Just straight driving, while I also have the heated seats, digital climate control, nice sound system and all that, but the only slightly annoying thing it does is the harsh beeping when outside temperature goes below 3 celsius (which doesn't really happen as it's a summer car for me). Sure, not comparable to these at all in any way. But I think this much tech just makes you disoriented from driving, and no lane keeping assist will justify that.

A very honest review. Luxury doesn't mean sticking iPad's in a car which mercedes did by ruining the whole Luxury aspect. No doubt mercedes S class is a beautiful car with full of technology but they could do better with those screens and a little buttons would make it perfect.
They didn't just stick iPad in car. Mach e is what you call sticking iPad in a car. Mercedes actually integrated the screen with the centre console and made it parallel with the dashboard so yes it is luxury
The First Edition stitched into the leather ruins the interior of that Bentley.

You showed your personality in this review Sir and it was good. With the Bentley being twice the price of a Merc though one wouldn’t directly compare them but I do see your point. The Audi was too many screens too that’s why I bought the BMW.

Very enjoyable and interesting review.
In a right-side steering car, I think it would be a challenge for a right-handed person to operate screen functions. In a left-side steering car, operating the screen in a Tesla S and this, I imagine, are just more manageable for a right-hand dominant people.
new S class interior tried way to hard for the Tesla/Volvo waterfall blah. Touch screens are so ubiquitous now that they can't be luxury
Agreed - they are cheap horrible things. No craftsmanship. No design. Just a slab that will age terribly. Nicely weighted and machined dials are infinitely more high end.
For that reason is why I like BMWs interiors and “dated” design. They’re simple, classy and they don’t change what’s not broken. BMW is evolving slowly and they’re biggest changes are always internally like through the Idrive and gauges and even materials always step up just bringing along the retro classic bmw with it. Those screens in the merc really ruin the interior. Its such a gimmick of the moment and as we know is not practical. We can do better I know it.

How are they a gimmick?
They are the definition of practical since you can choose which information and buttons you want
I have the previous generation of the Flying Spur. I never considered getting a S Class, didn't enter my mind. Not sure if, for instance I wanted an S Class, I would say to myself, hang on, I should consider the Bentley. I think the buyers are different and choose one or the other based on different needs.
Hopefully there will be an optional 25 inch flatscreen for the seat next to the driver because it hasn't enough screens.
4:39 Great illustration of technology stress, induced by loss of control due to stuff that doesn't work quite the way it's intended in the Mercedes. Great review. In the end, perhaps the Ghost would be your choice, had it been included, as it's got a more comfortable ride than the Bentley and yet retains a traditional atmosphere.
Bentley for me PLS :)
I have a seat Leon with NO dials at all and using just the infotainment system has resulted in me nearly crashing on several occasions just trying to choose the direction the air blow .not only a pain to use but bloody dangerous

@@ernstschwaig4667 You are so harsh. 😂
As someone who spends a lot of time staring at screens, I like the isolation. But both are feather dreams 😂
It's really hard for English reviewers to say anything bad about British Engineering, and I respect that. But there's no way that Bentley is better than the Mercedes, plus considering the price.. 😱
S class versions like Maybach for finish or AMG for involvement would be fairer comparisons price-wise but personally I would find it nicer to listen to opera even in the regular S class quiet interior compared Bentley, and that Mercedes excellent *automatic* climate control would rarely need touchscreen use anyway except maybe when start car to briefly choose windscreen clear option in freezing weather. Anyway I find big screens are ideal for selecting more advanced options quickly and seeing maps better
As an industrial design student, I learned about informative and cognitive ergonomics. If a human has to interact with a device whilst keeping eyes on the road, it means that the device should be operated by interacting with other senses. Touch, sound, taste... these touch screens require eyes to operate them. That’s not modern, that’s not advanced. That’s flawed and potentially dangerous. I know car companies are anticipating not needing a human to control the car’s path, but we are not there yet!
That mercedes steering wheel is simply a masterpiece. That is everything one could ever want
Very amusing. Cancel stress mode. :))))
Car reviews are usually so amateur, childish, blue collar. This was excellent. Thanks so much.
