  • At one time, LEX 18 produced a wonderful program called "Kentucky Life" that profiled communities around the state. We found some VHS recordings of the Estill County editions in the collection of the late Citizens Guaranty Bank CEO and community leader John St. Clair. This is the 1987 edition. Enjoy this snapshot of Estill County history!
Special thanks to Joe Nugent for the digital conversion work!

I really enjoyed watching that. Memory lane is great to venture down from time to time.

Things get complicated when you get past 18, but the class of ‘87 had its dreams… what a wonderful trip down memory lane! Thanks for posting!

Estill County High School did not consolidate until fall 1971. I graduated Spring semester of 1971(June 7, 1971) and we were the last class to graduate that was ECHS students only.

I love my hometown but ache at the decline that has occured in the last 2 decades. In 2000 there were 15, 300 and in 2020 there were 14,100. We are down to one grocery store while we have 8 dollar stores. The town trails other towns its size in way too many ways. There is no riverfront and little public access to the river...that may be changing soon, I HOPE! The roads leaving town other than KY 52 west are dangerous and lack berms on the shoulders. Trash is everywhere...on the roadsides and people keep so much junk and crap in their yards. We have so much beautiful scenery if we promoted our tourism like Powell County does. The local tax base is eroding as people move away or if they live in town, they work and shop in the Bluegrass towns. Life expectancy is low...unhealthy food in the dollar stores and Save A Lot. The only positive thing lately is the school system...vocational school and high school athletic field being updated. We need leaders with vision who will PLAN a better future for our community. We need to bring new people into town as the baby boomers are dying and the younger ones are having few and no children anymore. Our local people in Irvine need to go to the riverfront, walk the trails and sit in a bench along the river after a long day of driving to Lexington to work. The good restaurants like Cedar Village, Michaels ans River Restaurant are gone...The boat dock under the bridge is rotting and falling apart....pray for our town...Pray for a brighter future.
