Coil’s albums have had spotty availability on streaming services for a long time, and all their first three main studio LP’s are currently not on Spotify. All are incredible albums, and this one is the most fun, the one in which their trademark darkness is most alloyed with lightness and even humor. Underground noise meets trendy dance rhythms, futuristic sound design mixes with themes of ancient alchemy, and chaotic drug trip simulations are held inside songs that mostly feel tight and coherent. In other words Coil, like very few groups, truly made music that recognized no boundaries. As the music from their time (late 80’s to early 2000’s) gets seen more and more from a historical perspective I think the work of John Balance and Peter Christopherson will increasingly stand out from that of their peers: this is music at once of that moment (its material being mainly the era’s synths, samplers, and drum machines) and yet transcendent in its effect. Another artist that shows the same contradictory impulses both to set and break boundaries-even if the music is made on a smaller scale and under more sober conditions-is Craggs-Farallon (ua-cam.com/channels/nHfzXZVuU769al_ccIcjRw.htmlvideos).
Dark River was the first COIL song I ever heard. I had no idea who it was because it was on an anonymous mix-tape a friend made me. I was so happy when I finally picked up this CD and found it again, years later.

One of the craziest psychedelic experiences I had of my life was (while on LSD with a group of friends/bandmates) listening to Love's Secret Domain on an insanely huge Hi-Fi stereo with a giant subwoofer, while watching the (muted) art/documentary film "Koyaanisqatsi" on a large projection screen TV circa 1995.
It's amazing hearing how much they reworked Teenage Lighting for Ape of Naples. I'm listening to their discography in sort of random order and seeing the maturity of their song writing develop is really interesting especially with several iterations of certain songs.
Many songs on ape are 90s songs christopherson reworked for it. You can hear some of them on archivals albums like "backward" and "swanyard" (available on spotify) are interesting to hear in order to understand how their sound evolved
First time I heard this album was on mushrooms. It felt like the songs were my ribcage and that voices were being spoken backwards inside the song. 11/10 would recommend.

The thing that amazes most is despite being the program director at a college radio station in the 90's I've only found this gem in the last week!
This is Coil's masterpiece IMO. They were great in the 80s, but peaked in the 90s.
90s is better for me.
Personally think the millenium/early 2000s output is the best (Any main release starting on Musick)
Well this is rather a pointless discussion, even three years later.
I've never heard a bad coil album, they all serve a purpose and function, I'm sorry I guess that you don't enjoy the later "moon musick" era...
There is something out of this world in this. Gets me in a transe like state. Very rare and special. Hope i find those qualities again in my lifetime.
