Coil’s albums have had spotty availability on streaming services for a long time, and all their first three main studio LP’s are currently not on Spotify. All are incredible albums, and this one is the most fun, the one in which their trademark darkness is most alloyed with lightness and even humor. Underground noise meets trendy dance rhythms, futuristic sound design mixes with themes of ancient alchemy, and chaotic drug trip simulations are held inside songs that mostly feel tight and coherent. In other words Coil, like very few groups, truly made music that recognized no boundaries. As the music from their time (late 80’s to early 2000’s) gets seen more and more from a historical perspective I think the work of John Balance and Peter Christopherson will increasingly stand out from that of their peers: this is music at once of that moment (its material being mainly the era’s synths, samplers, and drum machines) and yet transcendent in its effect.
Another artist that shows the same contradictory impulses both to set and break boundaries-even if the music is made on a smaller scale and under more sober conditions-is Craggs-Farallon (ua-cam.com/channels/nHfzXZVuU769al_ccIcjRw.htmlvideos).

One of the craziest psychedelic experiences I had of my life was (while on LSD with a group of friends/bandmates) listening to Love's Secret Domain on an insanely huge Hi-Fi stereo with a giant subwoofer, while watching the (muted) art/documentary film "Koyaanisqatsi" on a large projection screen TV circa 1995.

It's amazing hearing how much they reworked Teenage Lighting for Ape of Naples. I'm listening to their discography in sort of random order and seeing the maturity of their song writing develop is really interesting especially with several iterations of certain songs.

My friends were always into Coil since Scatology and Horse Rotorvator, when suddenly this arrived and Coil was the bridge between experimental and dance. Not anyone was disappointed and at that time people around us started doing LSD. I was one of them and the album became this adventure for everyone involved. Mysterious, Strange, but still Coil... Even made a strange artwork about a vision I had on the final track. Chaostrophy made my neighbour once crazy. What's going on in your place?

It's a bit frustrating to know that most people that listen to this are listening on cheap, crappy speakers or headphones. This album BEGS for - almost *requires* - a high-end system with a balanced subwoofer. There is so much going on in the low-end and even high frequencies. (Although, many of us folks have hoped for a remastered version for many years). Play it loud and with a sub, and center yourself. I promise, it's pure magic. Don't be alarmed -- It will not harm you. It's only lightning... teenage lightning.

However i always dodged this album, feeling like a coil album inspired by or about EDM might just make me want to listen to EDM lol. Dunno wtf I was thinking. This album goes back and forth between being at the forefront of its time and ahead of it. This IS one of EDM history's watershed albums.

I couldn't get into most Coil albums for the longest time but something clicked the other day. Going through the first part of their discography these last few days and I've noticed they seem to work under no limitations. Absolutely nothing is off the table for them.
It's a little daunting listening to them because their discography is so huge and varying stylistically. I originally started listening to them because I was interested in dark ambient and drone (Time Machines, How to Destroy Angels etc). If any long time fans can give me Coil recommendations for albums that lean in that direction it would be greatly appreciated.

'moon's milk' is damn near perfect, if it isn't. the 'queens of the circulating library'-era, if you will, has a rapturous grip on me, currently. it's all awesome, but that stuff transcends everything everywhere. wicked. CSO 15 and 16 are incredible collections, too. give your brain a good washing. no, a thorough cleansing, with COIL for good health.😃

    • @artemlyubchenko3022

Probably phase manipulation, you can get a "panning outside of speakers" effect by inverting the phase of the sound on one of the speakers.

I think this might be an attempt to sonically replicate an LSD trip.
if you happen to have taken some actual LSD, give it a listen.
Of course each trip is different and it depends on what you're listening to.
I dunno, it's hard to find real LSD nowadays. I am satisfied with the memories of my experiences.
