Should I do a more in-depth version of this tutorial? At some point I may make a tutorial that includes all of the points that I have talked about so far (hair, face, coloring skin). Let me know if that's something you want. I'd love to hear your feedback!
Thank you for the tutorial! My style is more simplistic but I’ve recently finally added noses, and I draw lips for certain characters, so this was helpful! I love having diverse characters and I wanna make sure I draw them right :)
Im making a comic and i want to ensure my main cast has diversity within it and i found your tutorials super helpful with understanding how black people look and how to draw and color them. Ive been so afraid to make mistakes drawing black people because i dont want to be seen as racist and i'll definetly still have to experiment and ask for a lot of feedback from people on the way but these made me so much more confident in creating the ideas ive had for black characters in my mind.
I'm so glad that my videos have been helpful! Alhamdulillah! Mistakes happen, just try not to let that keep you from working on your craft. Keep practicing, listen to constructive feedback, use references, and you'll do just fine. Happy drawing!😊✨💖
Wow! The closed vs open parentheses is GENIUS! Your perspective of these type of things is truly god given. I would’ve never thought to pay attention to things like that but now I will! Thank you!
I really want to express my rhanks to you. To me, its pretty embrassing for me not knowing how to draw black people 😅. Im learning alot. Including the faces, really impacted me. Thank you for making videos of this 😊😊
I'm so glad that this is helpful! Alhamdulillah! Also, no need to be embarrassed. You're here learning a new skill, and that's something to be proud of! 😉✨💖
Thanks for this video. I really need this . Recently, I was critiqued by an artist. She told me that my characters are too fair skinned, pointy nose etc.And the irony is I have brown skin, flat nose etc. I think, I should begin to embrace my own ethnicity. My drawings are anime inspired but I realized that I can still inject my own ethnicity there. Flat nose, brown skin, petite etc. From the 🇵🇭❤
I've noticed that that is very common among POC artists. I had to make a conscious effort to make my art reflect my racial identity. I think a lot of it is down to the type of media we consume. You mentioned anime, which, to my knowledge, doesn't include a lot of representation for black characters. If you mimic that style, your art may not include a lot of black characters either. Ofc that's not to say that loving anime or wanting to replicate the style is a bad thing. It's just something that you have to be aware of when you're practicing. Anyways, best of luck to you! I hope you achieve the goals you've laid out for yourself! ✨💖
I’ve always drawn my friends as creatures from Mario like Goombas and Koopas and stuff, and it eventually evolved into a pretty long fanfiction. It takes place in the future when most familiar characters aren’t around so I came up with some OC human characters, and one of them is a Black girl. I’ve been drawing her for years but have never been satisfied with her lips. This video gave me a breakthrough I’ve been needing for some time, so thanks a ton! The only thing I’m still kinda stuck on is drawing her lips elegantly while she’s yelling. When I go for a wider mouth shape, they just end up looking too much like a caricature. Do you have any tips, like should the edges of the mouth be angled downwards? Sorry if that’s unclear
I'm glad that the video was helpful, APDTA! You can still have the corners of the mouth angled downwards. In addition to that, sometimes I won't connect the line for the upper lip with the line where the mouth opens (if that makes sense 🫣). Another thing that's a good thing to keep in mind, is that lips won't look as full when the mouth is wide open, because they're being stretched a bit. Try slimming the lips down just a touch, and see if that helps. Also, references will help a ton! You can even look at how other artists stylize full lips with different expressions. I hope that helps! Happy drawing and good luck with your fanfiction! It sounds really fun!
I used to use the ones from the dollar store, and the Twist-erase was a really nice upgrade while still remaining pretty affordable. I've had the one in the video for YEARS and it's still going strong. They also sell a box of refill erasers. I bought them on Amazon in 2017, and I still have plenty left. 😄
I normally color the top lip with a slightly darker color, and leave the bottom lip the same color as the rest of the skin, or just a touch lighter with pinkish undertones. I hope that helps!

I love your artwork! Especially the way you draw! Mostly the eyes!🖤✨ and the construction of the head and face. This really helps! Going practice.
Oh PBTA! Thank you! I've been told that the eyes are one of the most defining features of my style. I'm so glad that it was helpful! 🤠👩🏽🎨✨
