Omg! Thank you so much for this! I think a lot of us have a hard time drawing characters that don't look like us (at least I do). This helps me feel more confident in drawing some of my black ocs! C:
Thank you so much for this! I have several black oc’s and I’ve been aware for a long time that I draw them less than my white ones, simply because I’ve been worried that I’d do it wrong. My art style isn’t strictly anime, but it’s definitely affected by it so this helps a lot, I’m so happy
I have a few POC characters And I'm so afraid of offending people and or misrepresenting people Through something in my art or writing. I mainly struggle with drawing hair. ((//Im waiting for the video to come out right now!!, ill watch it the second i have the chance to!) As someone with plain poofy hair and Paper white skin I obviously don't know the experience or know how POC and textured hair works. so texturing it and trying not to make it look wrong is outside of my experience . being brought up in a very white (and kinda racist) area. Just wanna say thank you again for making this series and for putting out gorgeous art and talking about fun and important things in general! These methods are beautifully stylised. I've been brushing up on my color theory and color picking skills in the last year, especially improving dark skintone swatches for my OCs. I've also recently (after you put out this video) made a few pieces that required a bunch of different hues for brown skin, brown and black hair, and even fur, and oh my gods that little chart you showed at 9:29 has been super helpful. I feel like my color picking improved instantly. Thanks for sharing!!
So glad there is a tutorial about how to do dark and mid black skin because it's so hard to find tutorials about it from books to even online. When it comes to manga art, it's especially hard as if there aren't any black or tan anime characters 😑 Can't wait to see the hairstyles in the next part. That's definitely my weakness because I want to draw myself in the manga style, but my fro is a bit difficult to draw and shade 😅
I’m just gonna keep watching you til I get the hang of it you make soo many valid points about black anime characters. Thanks for your help and extra thanks for bringing awareness to offensive art. We don’t need that in that art community.. much love thanks 😊
I have a question that is general, not just for dark skinned people, how do you choose lip color? Like natural lip color, how do you choose one that looks natural and not like makeup.
I reccommend choosing reds or pinks and desaturating them, when a lip colour is bright and saturated it tends to look like makeup so desaturating a red/pink colour should help make the lips feel more natural
Thanks for this! My mistake when designing my poc characters was that i didnt do further research first and only looked up for tips when i was confronted about how they just look like tanned average anime characters, this is gonna help me fix my own characters! 🙌
This helped a lot! Cuz where I live I don’t see very black people, especially in school, I go to a school with about 100 per year group and there is not a single black person so this helped because I don’t wanna portray you guys wrong
