We've all done it...
Walking down the aisle in a tackle store looking at all of the new fishing lures.
Some look so realistic. There's no way they don't catch fish, right?
We spend $10 on them (10x more than unrealistic soft plastic lures) and take them out on the water with us on our next trip.
But what happens then?
They don't catch any fish!
Has that ever happened to you?
It's funny that the most realistic lures are often the worst at catching fish, but then the most unrealistic lures (like bucktails and gold spoons) are some of the best at catching fish!
So in this video, I brought on the fishing coaches to talk about why that is.
We've all got funny stories and money-wasting stories that made this podcast a really fun one.
What's your best realistic lure story?
Let me know down in the comments!

Hi
Hunger isn't the only reason fish hit lures. Territorial aggresion , curiosity , instinctive habits etc etc play a major role in why a fish hits any given lure.
Excelent guys! Tell it as it is is what the fishing community really needs -even if some or many fishing tackle companies are really going to hate you 😅- Well done. I just found your channel. Cheerios from the Yucatán, Mexico, the Tarpon and sea bass capital of the world! 😊 Thanks for sharing and for the honesty
We are always honest with our reviews and comparisons. Thanks for watching!
The live target mullet slays in the right areas in a area with loads of mullet it wont work all that well because it looks like everything else it has to stand out compare to everything else
I have to agree with you guys. Fishing here in NYC i see the same problem. Also i did cover my lures with fish oil to see if it would help.... it did a little. Now i started to using articulated Flys lures with scent that work in salt water...
Just watching the video. Funny that you bring up snook and bucktails. I read an article in Florida Sportsman over 25 years ago. The author said that all he ever fished with was a 1/4oz white bucktail. He would fish the trough in early morning and catch snook down in Fort Myers. On my next trip down I loaded up on 1/4oz white bucktails and caught my first legal snook, and others. Plus hooked up on my first tarpon.
Best bass PB was on livetarget blue gill.
Caught fish on livetarget swimming mullet, slow roll shiner. Plenty of stuff on doa as well. Seen fish caught on a block of wood with trebles. The best lure is the one on ur pole.
I thought you weren’t going to trash any manufacturers!
Lots of love for what you sell
90% of lures are designed to catch fisherman more than fish. Our predecessors caught fish without all this crap and the old school lures still work today just as well.
Another great video. It would be interesting to see Luke's tackle box .
I smoked a 8.31 Largemouth Bass on the Live Target Sardine wake bait during pre-spawn last year. I also caught several 3-5 lb Largemouth during the pre-spawn thru post spawn. So as for Saltwater still no luck....makes you wonder sometimes.
Excellent guys. Really informative really fun to watch with some good humour thrown in from you guys.
i love how this casual talks turn in to infomercials for the lures they sell...
Sounds like Livetarget is the competition. They throw shade at DOA in their Slam Shady commercial, too. The truth is that the paddle tail is a deadly lure. There are a few manufacturers that make them for all the brands, and they all have their own MARKETING angles to sell them. I like what these guys do, but I'm skeptical about how good the Slam Shady actual is compared to any old paddle tail.
That is a negative and my membership will be at risk if it becomes intrusive and dilutes the value of the information. There are 2 other negatives with the club. Firstly, it strongly targets what they do, that is kayak and boat anglers. Yet the vast majority of anglers are shore based. Secondly, although it is a club it does not provide any facility for members to interact and swap or move on equipment between the members. So a case can be made that rather than a club for members to benefit the guys are building a
conclave of individuals to whom they can merchandise.
They do give a lot of good information, but make no mistake, they are salesmen
@@nicholaslovett6248 the other day they made a video on a doa vr a vudu shrimp, and said "the vudu works better because its more life like" or something like that.. so.. what is it, more life like or not?? XD
@@gabrielduarte3904 LOL
I love this podcast. It is so right on the money. I have fallen for the same hype as everyone else has over the years. That being said I have had tremendous success with the Live Target scaled sardine swim bait in green 3 1/2" model in my region. Now their mullet and pinfish models I haven't even had so much a bump on either one. The other Live Target bait that I will swear by is the hollow body frog is killer for bass and snakeheads. I completely agree with your analysis on not getting away from the tried and true. Luke keep up the research you are working on the footage has been eye opening stuff!!!
Storm 6" wild eye shad in a 7/8oz chartreuse has been my go to lure around bridges and inlets especially if I see the fish on the Depth finder. It catches big fish!! Honestly though the right jig head and swim bait will do the same thing
I have fished for striped bass from the surf in NY for 40+ years and we now live in southeast Florida. I read all the comments and my conclusion is the same as the guys on this podcast: a lure that looks exactly like a fish will almost always catch far less than a lure that triggers a reaction in a fish. The reaction doesn’t have to be a feeding response; it can be annoyance, anger, curiosity etc. Who cares? As long as it results in a hooked fish.
This philosophy holds true in NY and it holds true in FL as well.
OTOH, I did find it ironic how these guys were knocking realistic lures yet recently they applauded another lure because “it looks realistic.” Whatever...
All that matters is that a plain old chartreuse bucktail with a Fat Cow trailer will catch snook - even though it looks like nothing in the ocean.
Snook hit almost anything a bass will one noticed . Only difference in bass lures is it’s made lighter and not made for salt water
I will say the top water mullet from live target has worked well for bass for me
Other than the community feature, what's the point of having the membership if all the content gets published to UA-cam?
I feel like the buoyancy on those live targets is off. They sink really fast and you have to really crank it in to not hit bottom in semi-shallow water. I feel like if they were really slow sinking they would be way more effective.
What's your opinion on Beastie Buggs ?
Guys stop it. I caught fish on all the lures you guys put up. Lol🤷🏻♂️ works really well for me.
Great show
Thanks for watching!
Vudu mullet works for me very well all kinds of snook and I moved up to Wisconsin and I'm catching pike and walleye
I’ve had good success with live target lures everything has a time and a place
I've been using black colored spoons and plugs many times (at night) for snook. Spooks, Hula Poppers, Jitterbugs and Devil's Horses. As well as Silver Minnows and Daredev'l Red Eye spoons...all black! Snook would go "nuts" over them.
Good ole gold spoon. When they get scratched up they are even better
My humble observation is the inshore and bass world tend to overlap as far as lure development and they just don’t bite the same way for the same reasons.
I love the DECISIVENESS of each person's comments regarding pros/cons based on authentic, experimental RESULTS!
How I wish DC politicians rode horses of integrity with as much authenticity as you gentlemen DELIVER. BS is very unpleasant to the common man who pursue career challenges (eg., fishing) in life with determination & perseverance based on abundant failure, mishaps & varieties of success.
WELL DONE, GENTS! YOUR FAMILIES CAN BE PROUD OF ALL OF YOU FOR YOUR DISCERNMENT, ARTICULATION & COMMITMENT TO YOUR CRAFT.

Wish I had watched this video 8 years ago to save me money but fortunately I've come to the same conclusion before I went broke. 👍💯💥
Action for the lateral line and flash to attract from longer distances. Haven't tried scenting lures yet but should be fun to test in murky water in the future.
I used that mullet and caught a snook from the peer
Nice work!!
This video looks way too long to watch but it caught my attention as it popped up as a random suggestion. Living in Southwest Florida and fishing in almost every single body of water every creek every lake every beach every sandbar I have fished not to mention all the way down to the keys off sure I can promise you the realistic lures have a few problems but you will go broke replacing them because they work so well. Sometimes the metal in the hook is poor quality and they break instead of band I have also have some of them. Bend. The biggest problem they have is the ice is falling off in fact I go to the fly fishing section or to a craft store and buy replacement eyes. I have had some of the biggest hardest hits from using these floors. They are body heavy and sometimes such as Tarpon and mahi Easley shaken because of the way they are designed. If they are thrown into a school of Jack’s school tuna a school of mahi they get instantly demolished bluefish read them nonstop. Snuck on the docks redfish even mangrove grouper yes I said mangrove grouper will plow these Lures.
Wyatt is my go to pro! ALWAYS!!
He is great!
So that’s how the straws get in turtles noses! 🤣😩
A bunch of years ago I watched birds working off shore. This is not a fishing report btw. Three days in a row. I thought it was too far out for a 16’.5 ‘ very stable kayak. Fourth day. Chuck it. I gotta see. Spanish mackerel. They are just like bluefish up by Long Island. You could chuck your car keys out there and catch fish. fun.
Thanks for sharing!
The tried and true lures catch fish because they all mimic something a fish does or resembles. For example a spoon looks nothing like a fish but when the light hits it it flashes like a fish to get that reaction bite etc...
I'd like to see some reports on wake baits especially if they outperform WTD lures on more turbulent conditions and if fish will strike them throughout the day. Also the
whopper plopper type Sprinker weedless frog especially for throwing into heavy cover like mangroves. I am based in the UK so can't test them myself. My SW conditions are very muddy waters and 40 foot tides but I still think my Salt Strong membership is great value. Save a lot of money on US mag subs which are $6 a shot for lots of adverts and tackle company sponsored articles with little useful info..
My first snook was on a live target mullet wake bait 😆
For me the most unrealistic lure I've had success with is a Super Duper for Trout or Silver Salmon in NW or even more species on Kast Master .
For perspective… I caught dozens of fish as a kid using a block of cheese. I’ve even caught fish with just a hook.
Hi Tony, are you still a kayak fisherman
Sure am!
I'll tell you a lure that works great, the Vudu shrimp. Either on a popper or using it like a jerk bait. Everything hits!
Finally , the truth. Thanks guys. This could be said for most bass lures.
47 minutes is too long
Maybe fish hit bucktails because they're curious about what it is and not because they think it's a pinfish or whatever.
Possibly!
Storm wildeye swim shads catch fish and are inexpensive. Good profile, color and action. Cheap. Fish don't care how much you spent on the lure.
I learned a long time ago that these realistic lures don't work. I started in my teens using a very realistic cricket and minnow fishing freshwater. Neither worked. Yet a Johnson Silver Minnow which is not realistic works very well.
The fish are smart!
Podcast what's going on about the south shore Saturday night get together guys thank you.
I have to call all of the Salt Strong reps in this video out as being total hippocrates. Basically you called every one of those guys in places like Montauk fools for daring to buy hand made plugs and other lures, some for a few hundred or more dollars. Guess what these guys have been catching 60lb stripers longer than any of you have been alive.
It takes a lot to get my back up but this video has done it. It takes a small person to judge and ridicule others for trying to enjoy life as they see fit. Somewhere I'm sure you read some guy from a couple millennia ago said to not sit in judgement of others, to be kind and care for each and every human being you encounter... there is more but I sense you get it by this point.
But here the content is like a bunch of those stereotype 'mean girls' about 14-16yrs old putting down people who are different from them, or more usually, are far far more knowledgeable than their cliques all put together. You boys should be ashamed of yourselves.
Can you please point out the part where we called guys who buy expensive plugs idiots? The core point of this video was simply to highlight the fact that not all great looking (to humans) lures attract fish. We by no means said that all expensive lures were bad or that people who purchase expensive lures were idiots... we even described some of the expensive lures that we personally buy and recommend like the LiveTarget mullet.
We sincerely apologize if this conversation came across as being belittling to anyone other than lure manufacturers who put more time making their lures look good to humans on the shelves of tackle stores than they do in making their lures look good to fish while in the water.
Damn it ain’t that serious calm down. You have a point but it’s redundant to be this pressed about it
Bucktails are the cedar plugs of inshore fishing jajaja
Bucktail for a dollar? Where is that?
Shoot theres 500-1000 dollar bass swimbaits
and btw, I like you guys and appreciate your work to, sure make a buck, but also offer a place that is well mannered and pleasant to visit.
"Horsehair out their butt"...now that image is in my head!
Lures catch more fishermen that fish
Call me a weirdo, but i think that i have a theory...okay, just like we know what a person does, how a person talks, how a person's eyes look smell, and when someone's afraid that youre gonna kick their butt, etc. we won't be fooled by any A.I. trying to pretend to be a human. I suspect that a fish can detect with their lateral line "sixth sense" thingy tells them when their natural prey (true fish) are and are not "A.I." fish. Now, a paddle tail, fake worm, bucktail (and other non-fish) they dont know because they are not of the same species and they will attack them just because they look like a delicious snack and they dont need to detect their normal lateral line distress signal because they are not speaking the same fish "language'. I hope that makes sense. Now if someone could find that signal and put them in those fake fish lures then i think you have a serious patent! 😉
Never know!!
spooltek biggest $20 waste ever
We need a new video guys are south shore needs help are voice needs to be heard.
