Regarding scent tracks. Going to my neighborhood dock one morning and saw a neighbor pulling up his crab trap with more crabs(27) than anyone else. His bait in addition to chicken was a sardine can barely open.

Fish sauce is frequently used in Asian cooking for umami flavoring. I use it myself, and it is some funky smelling stuff. It can be bought in just about any grocery store and is made with only anchovy extract, sea salt and cane sugar. I've thought about using sardines in a chum bag made of cheese cloth. These may be an inexpensive alternative. Stay Salt Strong!

As far as dairy goes, it could be the diverse enzymes and amino acids in the product that's attractive. Maybe certain dough baits could be effective for saltwater.

I've used milk to wash my hands before fishing, and taken baths with it to nutralize my scent before going hunting. My grandfather taught us this practice back in the late 60's.

I met Berkley Bedell in the 80’s through one of his staffers when I worked on Capitol Hill. He was from Iowa and started Berkley Fly Co as a kid. He found out that his staffer Steve and I loved to fish on the weekends, so he hooked us up with TONS of his then experimental scent pastes, balls and sprays that he was trying to develop. I actually used some of the stuff sealed up in a jar the other day on rainbow trout! He was an incredible man. Died last winter at 98 down near you guys.

As a soap maker, this makes me want to make a bar with fine ground Anise. That would work well with neutralizing your odor and give some additional abrasiveness for a deeper clean. I could also add milk like many artisanal soaps included but that probably wouldn't work the same as pouring milk on your hands because or the chemical changing process of soap making but who knows. It'll definitely help make your hands softer at least.

Something I want to share with you guys on fish scents as well. I've been experimenting with frozen baits like shrimp and greenbacks...i found that if you get a 5 gallon bucket and add the frozen bait with fresh saltwater plus getting a 2lb garlic salt mix but adding only 1/4 of it to the water...have them defrost and let them absorb that water till they start getting hard...makes wonders to the frozen bait. I tested it out down at the keys with my friend that doubted me leaving his frozen bait out. I heard from this Captain that swears by this...and let me tell...it works amazing...it revives the baits like you won't believe...they get hard as like you just almost caught it...and that garlicy smell makes the fish go nuts. My friend was amazed how well it worked. We started getting slammed left and right with that. It was like you cast land and they come after the bait like piranhas...we nailed like 30+ fish from Snapper, bonnnet head, catfish, grunts and 2 Goliath Groupers which we had to throw back...It'll be great if you guys try it and see if it works out for you as well, especially knowing frozen baits tend to be soft and mooshie when they're frozen...you'll notice the difference.

Tons of people use Ivory soap as bait for catfish. No science to back this up, but after I found out about that, I started taking a bar of ivory soap fishing with me to wash my hands while fishing. Seems to work well even after applying bug spray and/or sunscreen. If you’ve ever gotten either of those on your lips, common sense would tell you fish won’t want to put either of them in their mouths.

100% believe that something gets on a lure from a fish that makes it the hot lure. I've witnessed it too many times. Fishing literally side by side with friends and strangers, nothing going on...then one person will finally get one, and you'll see that same person catch fish one after another in very close succession. dozens of people using exactly the same lure, same color, size, casting it literally side by side. There is NO bottom structure in some of these spots. I've seen it happen all too often, and i've even been that guy on many occasions. One time i showed up late got 4 fish in 5 casts while others caught nothing for hours and they were right beside me doing pretty much the same thing. For this reason, i started tying fly material to some of my lure hooks just to see if it would hang onto whatever it was that wipes off a fish.. blood, slime, mouth goo, whatever it was.

Seems to me the fish ought to be jumping in are boats for fresh air. Smells, moon phase, barometric pressure, tides. I don’t know about you I’m going fishing if Moses said he was fixing to part the Gulf of Mexico and fishing would be poor I’m still going! It ain’t how many you pull in, it’s the enjoyment of trying. Good video though! I’m going tomorrow, drinking beer, occasional fart and let my dog slobber on my lures!😂

I put my gear inside the house. Helps eliminate any exposure to fumes, in your garage.

I would have to question the petroleum comment made at the 14:50 mark. I use smelly jelly that's made with petroleum jelly and catch fish all the time.

Hey guys, my father is a biologist. Living in South Louisiana, we eat tons of boiled seafood. Dad discovered that wetting his hands then washing the with baking soda, neutralized the odor quite well. Of course, everyone knows it works in the fridge for the same reason. It may be worth keeping some in the tackle bag or on the boat. Being a smoker, I have to give it a shot. I'll report back with the findings. Maybe someone else has some experience with this.

Shortly after the book came out, Berkeley made a fishing soap, and sunblock. I used the soap for years, until they quit making it. The sunblock worked, but smelled rancid. ....I've noticed that whoever drives the boat, especially a tiller outboard, or pumped the gas, always caught less fish over the years....Smearing your hands with bait guts and squid works great until you're offshore on a hot summer day. When you absentmindedly wipe the sweat off your face- well, odds are good you'll be leaving a personal chumline soon.

collect a bucket of fine sand to wash your hands with 😄 works way better than soaps and you got non oily hands to tie knots and handle your gear it also works pretty good for boat fishing when you reached a spot and dont need to touch the engine for a while 😄 you can also use it to get you cork rod grips nice and clean 😄 to get oil of lures you can give them really quick dip in some isopropyl alcohol and put them in water straight away to not damage coatings or rubber 😁

Not to be contrary but my grandfather a WW2 vet smoked non filtered Pall Malls for 50 years, owned a Ranger Boat Dealership in Oklahoma and routinely caught limits of crappie & catfish. 🤷🏼‍♂️. He also chewed tobacco and always spit on his hook....
Follow Richard Gene fishing here on UA-cam. He’s a smoking & fishing machine 🤷🏼‍♂️. I’m a non smoker myself but Richard and my grandfather would both be examples that the nicotine data is flawed...(Killed Deer too)
Also, don’t bait caster fishermen’s thumbs touch the line every cast?
Catfish love Garlic and Cheese on the plus side.

So aside from the musky not liking the pike scent can other fish distinguish the difference in a predator fish and a bait fish?

Back in the day my Grandmother use to say it was lucky to split on the bate before casting, and on some occasions she would even spit chewing tabacco on he bate. I'm curious on your intake on this stragity. Does spit or chewing tabacco affect your chances on catching fish?

Did I hear you guys say that plasticizer detracts fish... plasticizer aka plastic softener aka soft plastic. The most fish catching artificial baits out there are made from this very thing. 🤷‍♂️

Anise is that alcoholic beverage that your Italian grandparents drink. They also make special waffle cookies with Anise flavor. It comes from a plant.
