Went to school in the 70s & 80s ....and super early 90s....lived in a suburb with plenty of farms within a short driving distance ...my point ..I DID NOT LEARN ONE THING ABOUT GARDENING, AT ALL!.. Or farming, or how to clean water or anything on BASIC survival..or even as a hobby. So its very appreciated to have folks like this showing what they can about how they grow food....Public education is a complete waste of time. Thank you Presley family & all those who take the time to post things that are USEFUL. 🙂🙂
Prayers for Meagan and her family at True Grit Appalachian Ways. Her dad passed away Friday unexpectedly. Tipper, I know you all can sympathize, losing Miss Cindy a year ago. Its hard losing your loved ones but knowing they are with Jesus makes all the difference and knowing as believers we will all be reunited one day.
Diggeon taters, reminds me of my Dad. Us kids hated picked up taters. Dad planted a 100 lbs. every year. When we started to complain Dad would say, these taters sure will beat eaten snowballs this winter. Needless to say we picked till every last one was carried to the house.
Just my humble opinion but I feel like between having two babies added to the family, Granny being so sick, starting a new garden that had to be turned over for the first time in ages, the dry hot weather and helping Corie and Austin move into their new home y'all accomplished a huge bit and still got some things put up for winter. Wore me out just typing all you've done. Think many of us marvel that you did all while including us in your lives with so many beautiful videos.
My husband was telling my Mom that his Papaw would section off a smaller patch of his big garden for his melon patch. He dug down and removed most of the dirt and replaced it with sand. He noticed most melons are grown in the deep south where they have very sandy soil. He grew big, full watermelons in Eastern Kentucky.
This reminds me of when my granddad, Big Pop, would take us down to the garden to dig taters. Him, in his overalls and hat, would stick a pitchfork in the ground and turn up the taters. Us kids would scramble around and put them in a bushel basket. Great memory♥️
You did a great job this year in gardening and already planting for next year…Lee had to much problems with critters we ended up hauling away 16 in all and that did not count the deer…our peppers did real good so we are thankful for that. Did not get to watch your videos as much as I wanted. I will go back and get caught up…have enjoyed the girls. They are a blessing to watch as well as you and Matt…need prayers tonight and tomorrow. Lee, my husband is having some surgery in the morning. The Lord knows all about it . God Bless You all.
Sitting and watching you and Matt, is very calming. Wish we lived closer, so we could visit. Reminds me of growing up in Tennessee, listening to the adults sitting outside talking. Such peaceful, wonderful times. I miss it so much.
My family went to the Kentucky state fair. I can't go anymore since I broke my hip. But my great grandson saw the biggest watermelon 🍉 weighing 232 1/2 lbs. He like you loves watermelon. He standed there licking his lips. So cute, just turned 3 yrs old. Praying for your family, Granny, Woody and Ira.
You all should try a cover crop in the big garden it’s easy helps the land things like crimson clover will even put nitrogen in the soil. Mat can also take care of some of your deer problems around it. It is truly a win win😊
Nothing like homegrown potatoes. I remember growing up we used to plant them, it was so exciting digging them and seeing all the different sizes! Just love all your videos! Time has flown by this year!!
I just adore these conversations with you and Matt. It reminds me so much of sitting outside under the shade tree talking to Momma, Daddy, Mammaw and Pappaw. Just talking about life and memories. Oh how I miss that. Thank you for bringing sweetness to my day. ❤❤ Much love from Tennessee!
Hearing you talk about frying potatoes in bacon grease reminds me of hearing my German grandmother talk about her potato salad recipe. She would cook the potatoes and then add a bit of bacon grease and also crispy bacon. I have never found her written recipe and have been on the hunt for a similar recipe.
We planted alfalfa as a cover crop here in Washington State & it worked very well at enriching our soil. It fixes nitrogen & breaks up the soil nicely. It never gets big enough for hay as it's cool & rainy, so will just till it under & I can't begin to say the wonders it does for our soil. Well worth the effort.
To add more light to the inside of your home, research Sun Tunnel Skylights. They fit in your ceiling like a recessed light and offer natural light. We really, really like them!
I don't know your story, but my heart goes out to anyone in pain. I waited with my dearest dearest friend while she waited for tests and was in agony. I'm praying with all my heart that your loved one's suffering stops at this moment and the healing begins. I mean this sincerely. ❤
I was mowing last week and the weeds get as tall as me within a week( I am five- four, the sticker weeds I usually push to the ground with my foot and mow them up( try pulling those stickers go right thru my glove. The thing is, I guess doing that was a huge bullfrogs saving grace, imagine mowing and go to take a step and there is a huge frog looking up at you😂😂 He was a keeper, made sure to put him back in the rock bed. I was so glad he did not get harmed, but the yard was full of frogs that day.
I heard the buzzing sound a few times on the video what mother-in-law used to call a steady bee 🐝 I highly recommend Matt wear safety glasses over his glasses while weed eating... I learned the hard way after my first pair were nicked while mowing .... Not everyone can wear Transitioning lenses. I've had two family members that couldn't wear them. I always buy myself two pairs of glasses. I bought a sunglass clip-on to wear on my extra pair now. I know I've rambled on about the glasses. But they're not cheap for sure. Thanks for sharing another day of your lives as you Celebrate Appalachia. Praying and Blessed! 🤗🙏💕🌄
Sow it in greens! Purple top, seven top, kale and mustard. That big lower garden can be a winter wonderland. Blue kale with snow on it……? I hope you get a big snow this winter ms. Tipper! I been cleaning up my little beds , here close to the house, also this weekend. Edible cover crops, the best kind!❤️
The warm incandescent bulbs are what I loved, that warm glow....however, we moved to an old family farmhouse that is dark as all get out. I switched to LED daylight for my kitchen, bathrooms and main room lights, and have warmer bulbs in strategic lamps for when I want a cozy glow and lots of light is not needed. Man, not only do I see a ton better, but it all but cured my winter blues. Having LED 100 wat equivalent bulbs in my kitchen, and living spaces most of the time really helped give the feel of more daylight in the home, and the cooler light gives me truer color for cooking and my crafting. My houseplants also love the light and grow better.
Matt & Tipper - it does seem like you just finished prepping and planting the 'big garden' and now here you are putting it to bed! Time is flying for sure! But it was so great you got CORN that you grew!! Next year will be much better...just wait and see... and hold fast to hope. 🙂💕🙏
Matt is getting his hunting look ready. My husband used to do that every year and then shaved when the weather started getting warm in the spring. Hope he has a good season to feed the family. I love watermelon and fried potatoes too. We love fried potato sandwiches. I make them with buttered oven toast. Yum! 12:34
Thank you so very much for putting in the time to share some of your life to all of us! We love it so much! I can hardly wait for the next one each time I watch you both!!!❤❤❤
When you clean those big garden rows, don’t leave the rows bare. Plant a cover crop: winter rye, buckwheat, black-eyed peas etc! Always keep roots in the ground. Feeds the soil microbes.
When I saw all those rocks in your garden, I remembered a story my husband told me. When he was a little boy, his grandfather had a lot of rocks in his gardens and fields, too. He'd gather all his little grandsons , give them a bucket, have them pick the rocks, and gave them a dime a bucket. That got those boys working.
As we’ve gotten older my husband decided to add more light, especially with led lights. They improved our situation so much it was surprising. I couldn’t got back to incandescent lights again.
Tipper, you are so right, new potatoes are so good. For some reason, they seem to taste better. It’s amazing how quickly time passes as we age. You can now start dreaming about gardening for next year.
Tipper a buckwheat cover crop would still have time. It will go to bloom in 30 days and then you can turn it back into the soil. Added organic matter helps a ton with the soil retaining moisture.
I fully understand about adjusting to glasses. Every year the eye dr prescribes a new pair of bifocals or progressive lenses, and I still stumble around, can't look down or I get disoriented, especially in scanning shelves for what I'm looking for in grocery stores, or big open spaces, like a parking lot, I weave back and forth. I am beginning to believe my Dollar Tree glasses serve me just as well. Your Potato harvest was good. My tomato bushes turned into trees with very few fruit on them, due to heat and inconsistent watering I had two bell peppers from 4 plants all summer, and now they are loaded with peppers and blooms after that tropical storm dumped so much rain. Oh well, maybe next year. It will be here before we know it. Have a blessed week. Enjoyed sitting with you in Appalachia.
When I break new ground for garden, I have had really good luck by putting down cardboard and then about a 4 inch deep layer of straw on top of the cardboard in the pathways between the rows, then soak it down until it's completely wet. Then come autumn, I clean off the rows, add more straw to the now empty rows and let it over winter. Come the next spring, I till everything in really well and make my rows where the pathways were the year before. I do the rows the same way with cardboard and straw. It's worked really well in giving me dark, rich soil and it conditions the soil very well also. After about 3 seasons, the garden soil in the spring is like chocolate cake mix. Your garden by the creek is pretty big but it might be worth it, if you can get reasonable access to straw.
Matt your voice sounds as though u may be a bit tired. Take care of yourself Glad your gardening season now you can relax more. I'm hooked on the Outshine Popciles , Thank you made them look so good i hunted until located. Do enjoy your channel, one of my enjoyed video family in Longview Texas passed last Thursday his grandson did videos with him Was Pop Watch, he was a hoot did so enjoyed them. But I still L have my PRESSLY FAMILY THAT I HAVE ADOPTED AS MY OWN
That was a great bunch of potatoes. Funny bit about the lights. My house is older and the lights are up on the ceiling. I have a small lamp on the kitchen table to see at night. Love to read but it's easier in the summer when I have natural light. Tipper, get a Peace Lily. They can grow in almost totally darkness.
Love the outshine bars. I enjoy tangerine and coconut, as well! Grape is good but it's so very sweet. I've been watching a lot of your videos lately. So appreciative of them. They are so comforting. Bought your book and it's on the way to my house! Wishing you all well.
Matt you gotta look up a middle buster for your tractor. That is the easiest way to get them taters up and you don't have to worry about chopping them in half. You can get one second hand pretty cheap.
If we had an 80 Degree afternoon or day, we would think a cold front 🥶 was coming in the next hour! 😂 But, that is Texas weather for you‼️ Love and blessings to all the family, including Binks and Olive! ♥️🙏💙🐾🩷🐾
Loved 🥰 hanging out with you (Tipper) and Matt today ❤. I love the lime 🍋🟩 Outshine Popsicles and, this week in Bristol, Tennessee it will get back up to the 90’s 🥵. I am ready for Fall!
Just a quick comment to Matt on the glasses. I have my first pair of progressive lenses. I had to have tri focals. It took me about a month for everything in the house to straighten out. They almost made me dizzy for a week or two but gradually everything got better and now I don't even notice the different powers. I can see much better for sure.
Yes it's been a rough year. From what I hear all over. No one around here, even us small gardeners produced very little. Well just geary ready for next year❤
My daddy used to fry potatoes round like Matt does. He would light roll them in flour salt and pepper. When they were brown he would take them up and make gravy to go with them . He would pour the gravy over his homemade biscuits and eat the fried taters with it . Lordy it would make you hurt yourself as Matt says. Lol
I worked for an Optometrist for many years, if you wear progressive glasses you have to turn your head and look at what you want to look at, it takes a little time to get used to them, but are great. Hope they work out for you!
I am like you Tipper, I actually check the tall weeds before we mow because we have little critters out there like the turtle that comes to visit or baby bunnies still tucked in their nests. I have found both of these in the tall weeds before we were going to mow. We always check first, sometimes a section at a time since it’s a big yard. I moved the turtle but mowing had to be called off where the baby bunnies were, of course!
Them taters would be great for gravel taters , green beans taters fatback bacon or hog jaws y some onion all together and a pan of cornbread now that's a great dinner
Cover crop. Since you will need a large quantity look for low cost. Make sure it will not live through the winter and be a "weed" next year. Buckwheat, etc. Even better turn the cover crop under before winter. Green manure will help correct ph.
I'm right there with you, Matt. I recently got my first pair of glasses and I am still getting used to them. I opted to not get the transition lenses which I regret. My eyes get so comfortable with the distance vision I have a hard time taking them off to see close up. Good luck with the transition and may God bless you and your family!
Love your videos. I told the love of my life that I didn't need Champagne & Caviar to make me happy, I was a peanut butter & jelly kind of woman. lol. He got a kick out of that. I did that too Tipper when I was younger I would cook me some french fries. I still do once in a blue moon. Shhhh. 😊
When i first started eating the outshine bars they had them in coffee flavor which was my favorite now i cant find them so i switched to coconut so so good
Oh to be young again.....french fries and buttered toast. No idea about carbs back then. Tip for the chickes, get some rye seed or pigeon feed and soak for a day. Just that soak provides a lot more nutrition than dry grain.
I buy the variety pack of the half size popsicle. That’s enough for us to enjoy. My husband goes for the grape and the rest for me. Ever since you told all of us about Outshine, that’s all I buy now.
The 2 of you are so special together ❤ I just wish Matt would speak more. He’s always so quiet and I just know how smart he is about thing’s. It sure would be helpful information to many of us viewers ❤. Even though your home doesn’t get a lot of sunshine if you added more windows it would definitely bring more light into your home. Matt could do that because he built your house. Adding a couple windows a year would really be fantastic for both of you, the older you get. Believe me, having just more lightness in a home, is so important for vision. I’m loosing my eyesight and even though there’s no sun, it definitely adds more light. 💕🙏🙏
Grandma used to just boil new potatoes. I don’t know what she seasoned them with. They were so good and completely different taste from a store bought potato.
My mother-in-law boiled a pork chop or 2 in her new potato’s with onion and salt and pepper. She made a lil thickness with a little water and flour when they were done she poured it in. So good. She boiled the pork chops about 20-30 min before she added potatoes and onion in it.

Loved to see Mr. Binks made his appearance 😁
Loved 🥰 hanging out with you (Tipper) and Matt today ❤. I love the lime 🍋🟩 Outshine Popsicles and, this week in Bristol, Tennessee it will get back up to the 90’s 🥵. I am ready for Fall!
Thank you for visiting 😊
Just a quick comment to Matt on the glasses. I have my first pair of progressive lenses. I had to have tri focals. It took me about a month for everything in the house to straighten out. They almost made me dizzy for a week or two but gradually everything got better and now I don't even notice the different powers. I can see much better for sure.
Thank you 😊
Mango and grape are my favorite outshine flavors! You got me started on them ❤
Love the coconut
😊
I love the background music from the birds
Yes it's been a rough year. From what I hear all over. No one around here, even us small gardeners produced very little. Well just geary ready for next year❤
Tipper you have a beautiful smile and lovely laugh❤
Oh thank you 😊
Hahah we call our sprouting jars "Covert Tactical Kitchen Counter Gardening" we love our sprouts!
It’s so sad to see the end of garden you know winter is on the way🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🫂❤️
Fresh potatoes are SO good! Enjoy!
Throw some seeds up the hill. See what volunteers come up. Might be the best u ever ate. Same with pumpkins😊
😊 Thank you for visiting with us!
Red Clover is an amazing excellent cover crop for corn.
WOW!!!! That’s a good potato harvest!!!! Great job!! 😍👍🏻🥔
Thank you 😋
Thanks enjoyed. Always love to see the garden no
matter what you're working on planting harvestIng or winding down at the end of summer
Thanks for sharing!
We always called those “poppers”. Never knew they were called jewel weed lol. Good to know!
The tangerine popsicle is great too! I buy the grape and tangerine
Thank you for sharing! Love y’all!🙏❤️
Them taters would be great for gravel taters , green beans taters fatback bacon or hog jaws y some onion all together and a pan of cornbread now that's a great dinner
Yum 😊
Hey you two glad the garden did okay for you guys get the greens planted God bless you all
Hi from Ohio. It was cool here, but now we're in the 90s again 😮 come on fall!
SWPA and agree. I'm ready for cooler weather.. near 100 is not my favorite
If the creek is close you might want to get a small pump and garden hose for watering next year.
I enjoy seeing the seasons of your garden. Thank you for sharing Tipper and Matt.
Our pleasure!
Love the Outshine’s
Coconut, lime, pineapple and grape 😋
Cover crop. Since you will need a large quantity look for low cost. Make sure it will not live through the winter and
be a "weed" next year. Buckwheat, etc. Even better turn the cover crop under before winter. Green manure will
help correct ph.
Thank you 😊
What I did for a cover crop, not saying I did it right. Planted annual rye in the fall turned it all over during the January thaw
So relaxing to save your videos for when I’m in bed at the end of the day
Love your videos. I told the love of my life that I didn't need Champagne & Caviar to make me happy, I was a peanut butter & jelly kind of woman. lol. He got a kick out of that. I did that too Tipper when I was younger I would cook me some french fries. I still do once in a blue moon. Shhhh. 😊
I like to use greens for cover crop mustard turnips mixed. Then put in freezer or can. Time to plant garlic and bunching onions
Sad to see the big garden go. Thx for sharing!
Matt could talk but he would have to start his own channel.
My ex mother in law would cook them with pork neck bones and cornbread and fresh green beans yummy yum 🤤
