One of the many life-lessons that film noir teaches is that "stupid people die in stupid ways". This great flick proves no exception that the rule. Brynner is always great (as good guy for bad guy). Thanks for posting this movie classic.
Totally addicted to these. I cannot believe we get to see for free so many gems. Within the same day i saw this one, Black Angel 46, The suspect 44, Scandal Sheet 52, and Scarlett Street 45. All great noir movies. Especially love Broderick Crawford.
The actor who played Dolly did a great impersonation of Charles Laughton as Captain Bligh. Yul Brynner was like someone from another world. Great stuff.
Yul Brynner is always great, and the supporting cast is solid, including Neville Brand as one of the henchmen. Sadly, Richard Rober as "Jim" died young (42) as a result of an auto accident only a few years after this film's release.
@@mphrdldn Yes it was! Released in November 1949, although he appeared in a few other pictures dated 1949 (including D.O.A.) that weren't actually released until early 1950.
Totally unbelievable plot....like the detective not guarding Miss Cardell in the early scenes. Still entertaining in its own way though and amazing to see Yul Brynner.

This may be considered a B movie, but Yule Brenner is all around gorgeous. As always he played the role with relish. I believe he could have played Gregory in Gaslight and surpassed Charles Bouie and I love the movie, it's one of my favorites.
In a delicious piece of irony Scott Brady (the tall good-looking DEA agent who played Michael 'Mickey' Waters) was arrested in 1957 for narcotics possession, but charges were dropped and he always maintained that he was framed.
A nice tight little short notable in the main for Yul Brynner’s cool criminal but also featured the great character actor Neville Brand who went from henchman to much more significant roles.
The cops broke so many laws. No warrants. Totally illegal BS from the cops. They could have been shot for breaking entering and attacking the owners. If they did this today they would be done.

@@Brucev7 Peter Lorre was still fairly slim and athletic by 1946/7: some 5 years later, he looked anything but: maybe drugs, drink and disappointment caused it, as they may well have done with Errol Flynn as his messy life caught up with him.
Je suis tombé par hasard sur ce film dont je n'avais jamais entendu parler. Plus qu'un film policier c'est un film à la gloire de la police et de la douane. ^ _ ^ C'est amusant de voir Yul Brynner avec des cheveux !
@40:31 When the police raided that place where she was working as a dancer, she mockingly said to them that she was Little Red Riding Hood. Right now, she is - inadvertently - talking to the wolf.
Good movie. Yul Brynner made a good criminal. I never understand why, after their gun runs out of bullets, the crook always throws the gun at the authorities in disgust. Is that supposed to knock them all out?
Thanks to @Cult Cinema Classics for this nice little police procedural. Yul Brynner, son of Russian parents, looks a bit like Comrade Putin. Both pretty hairy characters (pun intended). Later, as a baldhead, the former was very popular worldwide. The latter, therefore, should perhaps follow Brynner's example. 😂

Thank you for older firms. In this one it is hard to see Yul Brynner smoking when he later made a public service announcement begging people not to smoke. I'm not criticizing his life choices, but only noting the poignancy.
If they legalized drug use like Alcohol laws you’d have 1/2 less in prison & the national debt would be Erased within five years! Most of the states have fig that out by Decriminalizing marijuana! & taxing it instead of Prosecuting it!
