Great film for the era, depicting well the despair and anxiety one would experience learning they had a toxin and were going to die.
The street scenes of San Francisco were real, and hadn’t been restricted from normal daily traffic. The old cars, buildings, quaint medical drs, dance scenes and bop music make it a classic to watch! Paula is the woman for me, hands down!

@@Danthehorse "Out of The Past" is a VERY well-done noir. "Detour" is a lesser-known film, but it's quite good. "Laura" is very a very good WWII era film. "Kiss of Death" is very good. A young Richard Widmark makes his film debut as a sadistic hood. "Double Indemnity" is another landmark film. "White Heat" is an excellent crime drama with James Cagney as a vicious thug. I hope all of that helps. Cheers -- W

    Possible spoiler alert.
my review from a few years ago.
"DOA is Quite enjoyable and unusual. A fatally poisoned man spends the whole film trying to find out who poisoned him and why. From the opening long tracking shot of Edmond O'Brien's back as he makes his way to police headquarters to the final dark and surprising ending, this film never lets up. O'Brien enter the homicide division at the police station a says "i want to report a murder" The chief says " Who was murdered?" The answer from O'Brien? " I was" Right then you know this is gonna be a good one.
O'Brien, in a very fine performance, is like a pinball bouncing from one scene to the next as he tries, in a long flashback, to unravel the horrible event that has happened to him. And he has only a few days to do it due to the poison's effects. O'Brien is very likable in his role as an accountant. He's a good man, but at his modest office, he's overworked and harassed by his secretary girlfriend (Barbara Britton) to pay more attention to her.
There are some tender scenes with Britton that sharply contrast with very brutal ones, provided by Neville Brand as a terrifying psychopathic sadist. You can't take your eyes off him and his scenes are outstanding. As the brains behind the gangsters, Luther Adler is convincing too. The cinematography by Ernest Lazlo is superb mostly around locations in San Francisco and L.A.. One sequence in particular was secretly shot on the street in front of a real crowd of unsuspecting people as O'Brien runs through them. These cinema verite type shots are compelling and something special to the film.
Rudolph Mate, the director, was originally a cameraman who filmed two Carl Dreyer classics, The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928) and Vampyr (1932) Visually the later is one of the most extraordinary films I've seen. He was also nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography in five consecutive years, from 1940-1944. So you know he has a good eye and his direction here is excellent. The sense of urgency and doom is almost palpable in this kinetic noir.
Foster Hirsch, the author of books on noir and a commentator on CUNY TV wrote " "O'Brien's search for his own killer is noir irony at its blackest. One of the film's many ironies is that his last desperate search involves him in his life more forcefully than he has ever been before... Tracking down his killer just before he dies - discovering the reason for his death - turns out to be the triumph of his life." .
The ending must have been shocking for viewers in 1950 and it still is. I've seen the film a few times and the ending is still brutal and unsettling. Give producer Leo Popkin and his short-lived Cardinal Pictures credit for not caving in to popular taste.
On the downside I found some of the soundtrack distracting. The wolf whistles are obviously out of place but other segments of Dimitri Tiomkin's music seemed heavy handed and worked against the action. In one of the earliest filmed scenes of a Beatnik club, the jazz combo playing was a bad misstep by someone. It was quite obvious (to me anyway) they were not really playing their instruments. The drumming was passable but not the rest of the band.. If they had just let them play live it would have been a wonderful scene. Why they didn't is beyond me.
But those are minor misgivings in what otherwise is a fine film. Classic noir story---an ordinary human being, through a twist of fate, is hurled into a dreadful situation. This one's a beaut. Highly recommended."

1980s? I recall seeing a short film called D.O.A. in the early 80s, at a film festival on campus. But I can't find any info about it. And it wasn't related to this film at all. It's likely to drive me mad....doing a search for torrents gave weird results--nothing with DOA in the title, just random films. Normally, if the search has no results, it comes up empty. Something about that combination of characters seems to wreck that search engine.

Born 1953 and raised in San Francisco lived in and around the city most of my life. This movie feels Sf I remember riding the cable car up the hill to the babysitters as a child. We lived down at the wharf with mom and pop stores all along the Embarcadero. We fished off the piers watching ships being loaded and off loaded all up and down the waterfront. San Francisco is in my heart, just as the song goes.

That bleach blonde mouse must have been the only actress in Hollywood during this time, either that, or her dad was the producer or director. Meh.It doesn't help that she plays the role of a clingy, needy dish-rag, here.
    Good movie, though.

I don't understand why this film has such a high reputation - it makes almost zero sense and the dialogue is stodgy at best. It peps along once the lead has consulted two specialists over a bit of a hangover, but then gets mired in his "romance" with his tedious secretary. And don't get started on the swannee whistles every time he sees a girl he fancies...

I rewatched DOA last night and was surprised at how bad it was . O'Brien , who is usually very good, was just over-acting. Pamela Britton was not good either. When O[Brien checks into the hotel and see's a woman they use this hilarious catcall sound effect. What the hell was that. Overall , very disappointing

This one was just ok. A bit confusing with all the characters and the story, and the acting was a bit dated. But it was entertaining enough. I just watched Mildred Pierce yesterday. That one was really good.

Great movie except for Pamela Britton, who unlike her beloved Mrs. Brown on "My Favorite Martian" is incredibly annoying as the girlfriend here, if it came down to it, I'd take the poison!
