In this fourth update, I'll show you the completed torsion box, drilled MFT holes, and a wide variety of MFT accessories most of which were purchased from Axminster Tools in UK.
Note: Clicking the Axminster referral link above may give me a discount on future purchases with Axminster as well. All Axminster and UJK accessories shown in this video were purchased with my own money and I am in no way sponsered by Axminster beyond providing a 15% off discount link.
Let me know your ideas on how I can make this custom MFT table even better!
A bank of drawer under the table for storage
I definitely would add a t-track on the sides instead of your idea of using the test piece. With the t-track you will be able to used the clamps you currently have, similar to what the Festool MFT has.
Another thing I would add is the TSO MTR-18 triangle so that you can cut precise and repetitive angled cuts.
@@rodolfo-romero Great thought, thank you! So far my focus has been on 20mm holes, but you're right that t-track might be a great consideration especially since I have some on hand! Thanks for sharing!
Looks great so far!!!
going to start my MFT style workbench Friday. I can’t wait.
Very exciting!!!
very cool I made one myself. I absolutely love it!
I noticed you had the parf dog in the cam being inserted from the top. Try inserting the dog then the cam over the dog. You may already knew this but the dog protruding above the cam stood out to me.
I have a ton of the ujk stuff mixed with Incra fence for repeatableilty and add the dashboard mounting bracket.
Also I use TSO smart connect bench dogs to add panels for breaking down bigger material, mounting my kreg jig to, and router table. Of course Ron Paulk deserves all the credit for those ideas.
Thanks for the note! I’ve been quite impressed with the UJK products, but those TSO dogs look pretty impressive!
Congratulations, very good job!
Awesome job Cole!!
Great job on the workbench! You'll probably find you replace the top far less than you think you will. ;-)
For a finish, I'd probably use dewaxed shellac. It dries really fast and is plenty durable for a workbench top.
I'm still undecided if I want to use simple rail clips like you do, or buy one of the aftermarket rail hinges from benchdog or dash-board. I'll probably try the clips first (or the diy solution by dave stanton) and see how I like them.
As for suggestion on making your workbench better, vacuum clamping my dude! 🙂
The festool setup is no longer sold, but I'm between making my own or trying the setup from vacpad.
Either way, congrat on the progress! You did in a week what takes a lot of us months lol
Looking forward to the next one!
Always a great comment, thank you! I agree in that I'll replace this less than I think and I'm hopeful as well, haha! I ended up going overboard today with Osmo Polyx-Oil (clear matte 3031) today. Three coats with a light sanding with 220 between coats 2 and 3 (not even worth it between 1 and 2). Far more expensive than I wanted, but my wife talked me into it after seeing the effort I put into the table.
Regarding clips and that sort, I am planning to do a video in the next few weeks (likely mid-September) on the squareness of cuts using the clips, clips + fence, and a few other things. Not sure how that will go at the moment as I have some work travel throughout the next six weeks.
Vacuum is my dream...the Vacysys is so slick and I have a friend fully kitted out with it. I wish it was all still available, but Canada does still have some of the components available outside outside the pump. Looks so nice!!!
Great!
Very inspiring

👋 hi from norther ontario. Love your videos. I wonder if those clips for the track saw to the bench dog would fit the makita tracks.
I can't wait to build a bench like this this I should be in my new shop by October and watching your videos showing all the options with the parf system makes me want to go that route.
Thanks for such a positive comment, Mathieu! With the Makita tracks being so similar to Festool, I wouldn’t be surprised if they are compatible but I imagine Axminster Tools could confirm as they are pretty good with noting compatibility. I have no regrets in going the DIY direction for my MFT and while the jig and accessories may be closing in on $700 or so, that’s still much cheaper than the smaller MFT/3 from Festool that I was about to buy (if I need to work on a job site the MFT/3 would be ideal, though).
Yea they do fit Makita tracks
👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 looks great!
Thank you! 🤗 Finish is going on the top today!
@@MasonWoodshop awesome, im looking forward to hear how it effects your workflow. I made a portable mft but i have gotten thw saw and ujk accessories yet. Gotta save up those $$$$s lol.
@@dvntsmh I'm interested to see myself. Being able to position it in the middle of my shop the way it is in the video, or perpendicular should make things a bit better for me depending on what I'm building. Definitely tough in a one car garage shop, but with the track saw at the center, that allows me to put this table at the center.
On your next top, put the finish on before drilling the 20mm holes. So you won’t have to use the 20mm reamer, again.
Definitely one of the learnings from this build!
Probably too late but you should used osmo. That's what mr.parf suggests.
Haha, I did indeed use Osmo and I love it. It’s held up extremely well for me!
You should remove the screw that was seen under the rail. It looks like it would aline with the cuttinggrove if you offset the rail. Even if you recessed the screw, you will at one day hit the screw with you sawblade (maybe on an angeld cut). Ask me how i know.
Nice build. Am looking for rebuilding my workbench an find a lot of inspiration here.
Happy to have helped with some inspiration! There isn’t really anything I would go back and change at this point and it’s an easy bench to add to.
Luckily, that screw that looks like it’s be in the cutting line is about a 1/2” away.
How has the squareness been over time? Any issues with getting repeatable 90 deg cuts when you are taking the dogs out and in continuously?
Funny enough, I had just checked that on the weekend. Absolutely perfect 90 still. Since I built it, I imagine I’ve removed the dogs 80-100 times.
Does your track pivot up and down or does it stay fixed horizontal?
The UJK clips that I use allow for vertical movement up to the height of the dogs in the holes. The taller dogs I have allow me to easily cut material that’s even over 2” thick.
@@MasonWoodshop Ohhhh, so the track is primarily supported by the material to be cut but is just anchored by the clips to the dogs for a square cut.
@@MatthewKriegeryes, exactly! Works great.
Are there plans to make something similar ?
I’d recommend checking out Ron Paulk’s smart workbench plans for something similar.
What is the size of the top
38” x 80”
Can you post a direct link to the bit?
Here's the chamfer + reamer bit I was using: www.axminstertools.com/ujk-combined-chamfer-reamer-tool-for-20mm-dog-holes-107868?queryID=ffd7364756522bf580c9669efa52842d
Hi Mason, how was your experience ordering directly from Axminster Tools?
Great question! Ordering was no issue at all as I was able to shop in Canadian dollars and easily hit the threshold for free international shipping (excluding duties). They do, however, take a while to process and ship the order (usually a couple of weeks).
