    the middle drawer on your top box is a personal drawer you can put your valuables in lock your box with the lid open and that drawer is secure thats why there is a slot along the top of that drawer

    I have found the issue is with thin metal cheap casters and over loading. my answer is the following. I inherited 2 Craftsman 18.5’ X 27” lower tool chest 1 with a Rem-Line upper, one without the upper from my stepfather. He used it in aircraft where he worked, the company had a number of tip overs on the ramps and they ended up buying new tool chests. Because of this they had an engineer work on the problem. He called for sheet of 1" plywood, cut 4" bigger the cabinet and the tool cabinet was centered on the 1”deck, the hollow area was filled with 2 layers of 1/4" plywood so the edge lip is above the plywood deck. He added 660# 6" casters set as far outbound of the cabinet as he could, this means only 1 bolt goes through the bottom of the cabinet on each corner. It rolls like brick shit house on wheels very smooth but slow with a total max weight of 2640#. I repeated this on my cheap craftsman home duty tool box set, it rolls just like the original box from my stepfather.

    I believe that top box was made for SK by Matco in the mid to late 70s. Good little box.

    I wonder how this compares to the new ones. I have heard that they made them better then. Here to support you.

      I don't know if they've made any improvements to the full size rolling tool boxes like this yet (though I've heard it's coming) but I have been in recently to look at the new 5 drawer cart and it's much nicer than the old one. If that's any indicator I think the HF44 will only get better. Thanks for watching.

      I went out and bought one. Been using it "Everyday" for two weeks now. It works great. My only issue is that the drawers don't want to close all the way for locking. I just lock it and then push and pull each drawer. That closes them, if they are not closed already, and then checks them to make sure that they locked. takes like five seconds. Kind of a pain but well worth it in the savings.

    have you done a toolbox tour?

    • @firworks
      @firworks  8 років тому

      I have not in the past. I don't think I've got anything too interesting in my box besides my socket drawer and the ratchet drawer shown in the video. I was thinking of doing a video just showing my ratchets as I've got maybe some interesting ones. If people really want to see hundreds DOE wrenches crammed into drawers though I could provide that... I go to a lot of tool auctions and end up with boatloads of excess wrenches and sockets that are cool but take up too much space!

    I have adopted Adam Savage's mantra of "fuck drawers" lol. Most common used stuff hangs up for me and all I need now is a small tool box with drawers for the esoteric tools.

      If you can manage it, that seems like a good system. My garage is a spider-pocalypse. Anything not closed up tight will be covered in spider webs over night. I have no choice but to use a lot of rubbermaid containers and tool boxes to avoid having to de-web everything before I use it.

      I lose things in drawers is my problem. I use the tub idea on shelves as well.

    I have moved up from a US General 22'' series 2 to a 36'' Cornwell cart and I am much happier with the tooltruck brand box. Here's the thing the Yukon boxes on the other hand have the thick gauge metal my box and the icon boxes have, but only on the top drawer. They are sneaky at HF. I think you would be better off with that box than a US General. The Icon boxes are solid but at the price they want people will just buy a name brand. I was personally tired of going to big box stores and knocking all over the boxes to see if they were solid. When I knocked on my Cornwell it was solid all over we were then joined for life.

    some boxes like your top box are actually made so the top middle drawer opens without opening lid. my dad had one like that when i was a kid. and smaller the drawer the easier to wobble.

    • @firworks
      @firworks  8 років тому

      Huh... I've never heard of that. Interesting. I'll try to do some more research on that. I wonder what the rationale for having one drawer unlocked at all times was.

    • @billyboyd418
      @billyboyd418 8 років тому

      +FirworksYT you can see it was designed to not lock, look at the back of all the drawers. The middle drawer doesn't have that dented notch on the back like all the other ones. That is where they are locked.

    • @SgtJoeSmith
      @SgtJoeSmith 8 років тому

      My dad had tape measure, markers, couple screw drivers, electrical tape in the drawer that didnt lock. Cheap common stuff. So he didnt have to open lid to get tape measure and marker or if mom or me needed screw driver or tape measure while he was at work.

      +FirworksYT do you just have 2 bars or 3 inside the back of the top tool box? the bars that drop into notches in back of drawers.... i bet you only got 2 bars.

    How many ratchets do you need dude? nice video, just sold my 40 inch snap on heritage chest to buy the us general 72

      I need ALL of them! I just cannot turn down ratchets... How's the US General 72 working out so far? I'd love to go bigger some day if I ever get a garage that's not closet sized. Right now I have a hard time even fitting the 44" in there.

    If you pinch the tabs inside off the slides it'll tighten up the wiggle. As for the overall box wiggle, I put a plate of 1/4 inch by 4 inch steel plate from the right to the left under the casters to tighten up the wiggle and give it more strength. Use cardboard as a template to get the bolt holes drilled right.

    After using a snap-on box for 10 years then a Matco for another 10, HF boxes feel like they are made out of paper. Once you've gotten used to a real professional tool box, you can't get used to the cheap and frankly horribly built HF boxes. Now, if you've only known craftsman boxes, these HF boxes will feel pretty good. There just is no comparison to a real professional tool box. Not saying the real pro boxes are worth the price they go for but they are way batter built and designed than the consumer grade boxes.

      I disagree as my dad has the 72 inch snap on box and I have a 72 inch us general. Both are amazing boxes but I think us general is the best box you can buy for the price it is

      They're all folded and welded sheetmetal. Outside of the slides there isn't anything Snap-On can do better than the rest. Even slides aren't that drastically different unless you really go for the worst you can find.
