I have to say Lou this is hands down the nicest looking Javelin I have seen. If someone showed me 3 brochures of 71 Mustang, Camero, and This Javelin without seeing the cars in the metal I too would of thought the Javelin was the best looking with those Wheels and Curvey Corvette style fender flairs and that Driver Cockpit enspired Instrument Panel and if this color was in the Brochure I would of said it was the best looking of the 3.

Beautiful! I grew up in Kenosha. Half the town worked for AMC, so probably a little more than half the cars in town we're AMC's. Javelins and the original AMXs were my favorite. They were very common in town back then. Too bad they're so rare now.

Is it just me or is that hitch just attached to the bumper? If it is I would be very careful with what I towed. Don't want to pull the bumper off.

Lou, another great video! Keep ‘em coming. As a ‘71 AMX owner myself and owning Javelins since 1980 (H.S. Days) I always appreciate seeing them on social media, you have done more than a handful of 71-74 AMXs now and I really appreciate your affinity for these beautifully styled Muscle cars.
My best friend in H.S. had a ‘72 AMX and the minute I sat in it and felt it’s performance, I was hooked on Javelins. Kept my first one thru college and sold it when I joined the AF in ‘87. Lots of firsts in that car; speeding ticket, traffic light drag race, someone “totaling” it and subsequent rebuild, first breakdown, first prom, and of course discovering what the backseat is really for with my first girlfriend. A lot of great memories.
When I retired after 28 years of service, I looked far and wide to find the right one that I currently have......never selling this one.....ever! The AMX I own now is the one that Microsoft used to take over a 1000 photographs of to model the ‘71 Mustard Yellow AMX for their Forza Xbox race game.
Again great video and background story of this AMX.

I squirmed and squinted at my first encounter with an AMX(1996?). I had seen so many other classic American muscle cars of the same period before . Nobody ever acknowledged their existence until one was physically present. They shouldn't be forgotten.

Interesting treatment on the vinyl roof. And a 140 mph speedo!! I always thought that some AMC models, such as the Javelin AMX, were way under-appreciated. I’m not usually a fan of conversion to the LED lighting, but in this particular car, it seems to have been well placed.

Another unique winner Lou. Bought a 1971 AMC AMX in metallic dark green with white stripes when I go back from Vietnam in 1971. Like this owner I did not like what Chevy did to the Camaro and the Mustang just looked so big! I later owned a '71 Mach1 and it was a quality built car. Trans Am was big and my AMX had the sexy bulging fenders and had the look. When the gas crunch came in '74 the 16 gallon tank was killing me and I sadly sold it, of course I'm still looking for it.

These cars had serious top-end especially with the taller 2.87 or 3.15 rear-ends. The 140 speedo was no lie. Thanks for this feature Lou. These cars are so gorgeous and so un-common. Wow.

68-70 AMX was a two seat, using a shorter wheel base Javelin making it completely different from the Javelin line up. 1971 brought a redesign and AMC dropped the 2 seat AMX because of declining sales. They offered an AMX package (much like SS, RS, R/T, Mach 1, etc) on the base 4 passenger Javelin that consumers could buy. All 71-74 AMXs did have a separate VIN code that identified them as an AMX. Hope this helps

Lou you seem to like the Javelin AMX. I'm the original owner of a '72 Javelin AMX 401, maybe one day you'll want to interview/see my car at some future when I finish the restoration. Is there anyway for me to contact this AMX owner? He said the exhaust system is stainless steel. I'd sure like to know what brand of mufflers are on the car and/or exhaust system. It sounds excellent the way my car use to sound when new. Today replacement mufflers by MagnaFlo and FlowMaster sound tinny, like garbage. Thanks, Scott.

So where did they get an Overdrive Transmission .. GM ? Did AMC use GM Transmissions originally .. I sure don't miss adjusting the dwell on points.. but with GM you did it while the engine was running with an Allen wrench you did hot have to do it statically with a feeler gauge.. I would bet that AMC used a Delco Distributor too ..

    • @BrianChappie
      @BrianChappie 5 років тому

Not really ... 71 and 72 had same power but the rating system changed from gross hp to SAE net hp.
Every single part on a 71 or 72 AMC 401 are identical.
70 was the real last year for high compression and big power at AMC before they had to meet stricter emission laws.
That's why they took the 390 and stroked it to make the 401 for 1971. They increased displacement to accommodate the compression drop and still have a powerful engine and better emissions.

In 71 AMC still had a reputation for building smaller and cheaper knockoffs of the big 3. It must have made selling hot models difficult. Kind of like Hyundai building the G90 Genesis and trying to compete with Lexus, Mercedes and the.like.
