Meinl stack lovers gonna hate this 😗
Ouch! 😣 I was originally a sabian guy but switched to Meinl because of their Byzance series. However my stack is a 16in Meinl HCS China with a cracked 14in Sabian B8 inside. I couldn’t justify spending $500 on a stack 😂
lol. Im a HUGE meinl fan, but i really gotta agree. why anyone would spend that much on a cymbal that only makes one sound is beyond me.
I'm a Meinl fan, but I really think that using a specific cymbal to get a sound you want (Meinl Byzance/Classics Custom for example) stacked with an inexpensive clone of whatever other cymbal is included with the stack that you want is one of the best ways to get a cheap great sounding stack. I'm actually about to buy a Byzance Dual Trash and stack it with an Agazarian $50 14" China.
4real
Yeah I had the cheap stack epiphany about a year ago and have since amassed quite a pile of junk cymbals to experiment with, a few of which I’ve paid as little as $5 for. My personal fav is to mount a mini china rightside up with a slightly bigger splash/crash on top of it. Gives you a quick sharp 'clap' effect that compliments hi hat grooves really well
I'd like to thank you a lot, because in addition to drumming tips, I also improve my English with your lessons. :-)
For real?! That’s cool, man 🙂 Maybe I’m in the wrong business 🤔
@@RobBeatdownBrown 😅😅😅😅
3:29 to 3:33 is everything you need to know.
Yup
@@RobBeatdownBrown If doing a stack with a china, can the china be a "good" cymbal without damaging it? I have a 16" Paiste Sig china. If I put a cheap crash inside, will I only hurt the crash? Or will it hurt both?
Facts
couldn't agree more with your video. My stack that I've been using for over 10 years now is a 12" wuhan china that I got for something like $20 and an old 10" paiste rude splash that I got used with a small crack in it from ebay for dirt cheap. It sounds just as good as any of the name brad stacks that I've heard and it's still going strong after all of these years.
Thank God for the Wuhan mini china/splash stack
I was just looking at Zildjian’s new stacks too....$170 for 16” pair. Thanks for this video Rob. Saved me some $$$.
Excellent video. First video i ever saw on "stacks". Im 72. I loved cymbals as i was in junior and senior high school band. People think you just crash 2 cymbals together like the energizer bunny, but, there is an art to playing orchestra cymals. 😊
Yeah. I refused to pay $600-$800 for a stack. I put one together for $70. Low end Mienl cymbals
Beatdown, the gift that just keeps on giving. You’re the best man, thanks for not turning this into a paiste commercial.
Nah, man. I love my Paiste’s but ain’t nobody payin’ me to say anything here. And thanks! 🙂👊🏽
My auxiliary hats are cracked splashes. I leave them a hair from touching and it gives them this great trashy open hi hat sound but the volume is low. It's a great effect that tripped out the band mates when they heard it. 👍
That opening groove was 🔥
Hen Levy Thanks, man 🙂👊🏽
Makes so much sense. The more expensive high-end cymbals are designed to give a specific ring, sing or sustain, but when you place them together you lose all that anyhow. And as far as cheap cymbals, I bought a brand new Wuhan 16" china several years ago and it is the PERFECT trashy china, and it cost me like $30. I'll never take that thing off my kit. Now if you'll excuse me I have to play around with pairing up some of my old leftover cymbals... Thanks again Rob :)
I was not prepared for the immediate FIRE 🤯
Wow, I'm glad I stumbled onto this video. I started teaching myself to play drums several months back (at 64 ), I want to experiment already with different sounds this is some cool ideas.
3:28 right on man. This is great, I have some old cymbals lying around - one of which is cracked. I'm gonna spend some time messing around to see what I can come up with!
When people say why do we have to learn maths if we aren't going to use it in life!
Rob: trash(-) x trash(-) = stack(+)
"...that just goes cksssch!" LOLove it! May I use this sound bite next time I'm in Guitar Center?
cuppajoe2go Sure. Just send the royalties to P.O. Box...😏
When you said "piece of crap" I laughed out loud. I knew you were about to say it.
andyracksthecams ‘Tis what it ‘tis, man 🙂
@@RobBeatdownBrown I have a few of those "piece of crap" old unused cymbals laying around. Now I have some experimental use for them, thanks to you. Cheers.
So cool Rob!! A cat with your insane skills using inexpensive methods and cymbals on your kit, wow! As a beginner, I always think really good players must be playing the highest end Cymbals and Drum Kits. You just proved me wrong...Great video today! 👍
And there you have it. Every day, more and more professionals agree..... The big name cymbal companies are just marketing junk that they have laying around their factories. Thanks Rob!
The best stacks are just comprised of cracked cymbals. I have a couple combinations that are both made up of cracked cymbals.
18" ZHT China under an 18" HH crash (both cracked)
12" Wuhan China under a 10" K Splash (both cracked)
Used them on a full length album and the engineer loved them. Haha
Bro my stack literally cost $45 and i've been playing it for a year, is sounds awesome and still hasn't broken after beating on it for year now
Your videos are always great, and your way to communicate and talk is very clear! Thanks for all the tips on drumming! Cheers and Happy New Year!!
Make sure the bells on the individual cymbals fit together.
My stack is a Paiste 20" prototype that cracked and a Paiste 505 18" medium that I inverted. Sounds great and was made out of cymbals that are now worth $20 max
One of the best trashy cymbal sounds is Bill Bruford’s, used on one more red nightmare!
He found it in the dustbin at the studio where they were recording Red. Brilliant. Check it out!
Awesome video. Absolutely sick drumming. Excited to go buy some cheap cymbals!
Let's not forget Bozzio for stacks mainly during Missing person period. Yes, Chris Dave the king of cracked stacks.
well thank you Mr Brown! I did just that bought a 12” Finest Alloy no name cymbal on ebay for $30 and a paiste 10” pstx and then, I rigged up with cymbal felts (about 6) a washer and a nut I spaced it out to put a 8” Istanbul splash on top of that for another sound on the same stand very cool! Thank you for your suggestions and drumming tips, you are the man!
I used a cracked 18in Wuhan and a cracked 10 in custom A splash. Best sounding stack in my opinion, big but my ex even said she loved that cymbal sound.
Very nice sound Rob I never considered your advice before.
This kind of message is hated by branded cymbal makers... but I approve 👍👍
Thanks for the advice.
Oh, man you are so right! I never understood spending some hundred bucks on a stack.
I have one that costs me not more than 30 €. It consists of a cracked 16" crash (Zultan Aja) in which I drilled some holes (as bottom) and a thin warped 13" hi-hat top (Paiste Stambul). Both bought a the Thomann flea-market some years ago.
Perfect! 🙂👌🏽
Great video man. I have a ton of cymbals I don’t use. I’m going to do some experimenting! Off subject I just took apart my 6 piece Pearl BLX kit cleaned em and tuned them! Sounds like a whole different kit! I’m excited to add some new stacks to my new sound! Love your playing man!
Cool vid, found with the aux hats you can make a stand for next to nothing, just a m8 female connector and some m8 threaded bar, cut with a hacksaw and you can lengthen your stands for next to nothing, works a treat 👌
I used a cheap Meinl HCS hi-hat top I dug out of my garage and threw an old Zildjian S series 10in splash on top and it sounds super cool.
ive been saying this since I started playing 30 years ago....people only care about what "Name" in on the cymbal...but in actuality it sometimes just doesn't matter
Thank for the info, Brother. New subscriber, new fan.
I made a super cool stack/trash hat with a Paiste pstx 10" trash splash as the top lid and a Pst7 14" china as the bottom. Mount this on a Hi-hat clutch and you get this really cool Mesuggah esq stack sound! Super cheap as well! Definitely subscribing to the idea that stacks should NOT cost 500 Bucks, thats throwing money in the river.
This video is gold (as so are the others) but in my case, I do not have any broken cymbals since I sold my first ones and never got a chance to crack them, now I'm going to look for a cheap hi-hat and that Paiste to get my stack done, lots of cool Mars Volta grooves await me 🙌
Great explanation! I will wait as long as need to hear from you about the ride!
Great video brother!
I myself use a 12” china bottom and a 10” splash on top. The top cymbal is normal with the edge down so it sort of just lays over the inverted china.
Makes for a great fx rig and no edge warpage!🤘🏻
Thx for the stacks info, I have the same set w/ wood grain as yours, MAPEX ARMORY
Keep the videos coming
great tips. i was too cheap to buy a Splash so i ended up using an old 13 inch Hi Hat cymbal. Sounds GREAT. :-)
I'm def subbing for this, man, I love your fucking channel. Thanks for sharing your wisdom.
Always good tips and ideas! thumbs up!!!
Coolest sounding stack I ever heard was two inverted Wuhan splashes.... a ten-inch on top of a twelve-inch.... both splashes popped inside out. AMAZING.
Wow I never thought of that cool !! Thanx Rob!!
You sound amazing. Your groove feels hella good
Great video, thankyou!
thanx Robby yur awesome
i use a starter kit hihat upside down on my cracked ride saban cymbal!
been stacking cymbals for 30 years. amazing how cheap cymbals work the best.
I remember that STack WEckl used to Have Way back In 1989-90,It was a 14" K mini China on top of a K 17" or 18" crash I believe, I was just starting out at that time And was Hooked on Trashy Cymbals ever since
Love this!!
Thank you Rob
No sweat 🙂
STACKS... Distortion or overdrive for cymbals! I LOOOOOOOVEEEE EM... BUT sometimes you should incorporate your really nice cymbals to be used as unconventionally stacks that just have a touch of dirt! I first saw Mark Guiliana put small effects UNDER his jazz rides! Think Elvin Jones rides... remixed!
Sounds great!
Nice video. I came up with a nasty sounding stack that I made with a cracked sabian splash and a 14 inch wuhan china. It sounds awesome when you have a remote hi-hat pedal
Whirlwind Studios That’s how you do it 👌🏾
another great video sir, thank you very much.
Awesome video! Thank you.
I built my stack from 16 pst 5 china and 16 pst x thin crash
I absolutely love those cheap no name cymbals. There is nothing else on the market that has the same characteristics.
What ONE moron gave this a thumbs down?? GREAT INFORMATION MAN!! THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEOS!!
The very first drummer I ever saw, and heard, use a stack of cymbals was Jon Theodore from his time in The Mars Volta. Currently he's in Queens Of The Stone Age. I still have my copy of Modern Drummer from June 2005 which featured Theodore's stack of busted cymbals, and that's all MD describe them as so I cannot say specifically what they all are. In one picture it looks like a riveted 14" Zildjian bottom hat with another 12" riveted splash on top. Then a 12" Zildjian Trashformer and some kind of 10" splash that's been inverted with a chunk of metal from a similar splash attached to the 10# splash. In fact I think all the cymbals are inverted. It looks gnarly, but it sounds amazing if you've ever heard it on the Mars Volta albums he played on; Tremulant EP (2002), De-Loused In The Comatorium (2003), their masterpiece, Live (2003), Frances The Mute (2005), Scabdates (2005), their second live album, and Amputechture (2006).
So yeah, I totally agree with you. Don't buy into the pre-made stacks the companies are selling. Custom-make your own and have some fun. I used to use stacked cymbals too, placing a small piece of felt between each cymbal so they didn't sound dead. And you're absolutely right, Rob. Thinner cymbals do sound better because they resonate better when stacked. If you do it right, with the right sizes, you can make a funky pseudo-china cymbal sound. :)
Seems like I saw a picture of Steve Gadd with some broken cymbals stacked. It appeared to have been taken in the 70's.
And you may very well be right. Just regaling the first time I ever saw a drummer do that, which seems to be where the spark for Paiste and other companies to make their pre-made stack cymbals comes from, but I could be wrong there too. Just seems like the companies making this is a more recent thing.
@@DoppelgangerShockwave Sorry man if that came off as me trying to correct you. Not my intent. I had the same feeling about the pic of Gadd I saw. At the time I didn't know about stacking (which wasn't very long ago), and I was trying to figure out what he was doing with it.
I have that modern drummer issue 10 feet away from me! :D I started using a stack with a trashformer because of Jon, makes all the difference, sounds awesome.
Cool man! I'm going to try it!
I took two of my bad no names and torched it, I made a DIY trashformer and it SNARLS
this stack is Pretty cool
Great advice.
I've got a 14" Trashformer ($40) with an old 14" New Beat hi hat top on it. It's okay, but I'm looking for a smaller cymbal to put on top. 12 or 13" cheapo Ozone style or splash would be great. Just gotta find a cheap one
This is a great topic. Expensive stacks aren’t worth it. You’re throwing money in the trash!
I just put a 14” China cymbal on a closed hi hat adaptor with a 14” hi hat on top and a tambourine on top! 👍
Love the outro music!
Thanks, man 🙂
I love your stack sketch haahha
Well good thing i sold all of my cheap cymbals!
dude, did you just swoop sweetwater on cymbal stack videos. pretty sneaky! lol
🤷🏽♂️😏
thank you man, valeu!!!
Bought some whack splashes, I mean they not, but they're not what I wanted.. Drilling holes in them and stacking!!
Hey rob I got me a cheap 8 inch cymbal and put it on my hihat for a stack !! It sounds so cool, question wud the sound change if I drill holes in it ? if wud the sound be higher or a lower sound? Anyway thanx again for all the cool info man keep it up ur the best!!!!😀😁
Yes & Higher. Most likely, dependind on density. weight, metals. manufacturer etc...
Dig it.
Hey Rob, would a 10´pstx splash also work with a 12inch brass cymbal? I could not get a 12inch ship cymbal like yours so not sure
You’re a bad influence Rob, I’ve bought some Paiste’s recently. 21” dark energy mk1 ride, 14” dark energy light hats, quite rare! 16,18, 20, 602me crashes. All of which are rather splendid! 😂
There’s a difference between ‘purchases’ and ‘investments’ 👌🏾 That ride is still on my wish list
Rob Brown
I just fancied some Paiste’s.
I play Bosphorus!
You may have been an influence!😂
Stacks, by nature, are atonal staccato noise. There is no reason to spend HUNDREDS on a couple of small cymbals to do this. It's not like you need pure B20 bronze for tonality....
I got a 10" aax ozone on the bottom and 7" hhx splash on the top
And I’ll betcha it sounds cool
@@RobBeatdownBrown it does I use it on real love y&f
Cool video
Has anyone experimented with stacking stuff on top of ride cymbals, that you know of?
I remember Billy Ward used to put his Ride on a HH clutch with a ZBT trash splash Underneath , sometimes he would adjust the Ride to not touch the splash or sometimes fully have it on Check out the 2000 MOdern Drummer fest Video
Agazarian 16” crash. Cheap piece of trash that sounds GREAT. Put some holes closer to the center of that thing, throw it on top of an inverted china... 👌🏻
Isnt it important to put a felt in between the two cymbals to preserve their lifetime?
Felts won’t do anything to preserve a cymbal’s lifetime in the case of stacks. You definitely want one under your cymbal when it’s on a stand, but cymbals in a stack need direct contact to sound stack’aliscious. That’s another reason why using used or cracked cymbals is a better idea.
Alright. I am a beginner drummer and ordered s 12 inch china to add to my splash, for a mini-stick. Thanks for the info! I would have bought a really thin felt, 3mm or smth around this to put in between or cut a little bit off another felt. @@RobBeatdownBrown
Question. Would those cymbals make a fun set of trashy hihats? I keep seeing meinl stacks for about $50, and i wonder if they would make a fun set of trashy hats.
If you put the little paiste cymbal you got on the bottom and the no-name on top (asymmetric hats ), how does ot sound? I'm just curious, but I'm a college student with $0 disposable money to spend on drum stuff so i cant test it myself. Could you do my a solid bro and let me know how they sound as hats?
And you talk about trash hats in this video.........lol
@@thundermolloy I can't say specifically because I don't have his cymbals but my experience is that heavier bottom hat on top and lighter on the bottom dont sound very good. You get more of the sound that you get if you played the bottom hat by itself.
