  • A fanvid for the relationship between Lucas, Anna/e Marie and Mr Oakapple - or me trying to capture that aspect of the original book of there being not two but three orphans at Midnight Court.
Clips from the 1977/78 ITV Southern serial (with Simon Gipps-Kent as Lucas, Maxine Gordan as Anne Marie and David Collings as Julian Oakapple). RSong - Randy Stonehill King Of Hearts Orchestral Version (which I realise is therefore a bit out of context here, but it had exactly the right feel).
All material belongs to the original copyright holders, and no copyright infringement is intended, nor is any profit being made. Certainly not by me, anyway.

This video is what made me buy the DVD off Amazon. I've known David Collings as Mawdryn and Poul and Vorus for years now; I'm looking forward to seeing him in another roll.

I bought this off Amazon back in May. They say the sound and picture quality is poor, but I found it perfectly good. It is one of my very favourite books and this series makes it sooo much better. It's so heartwarming because you can see how fond Lucas and Anne-Marie become of each other as they have to look out for each other, and how much of a strong yet loving character Lady Murgatroyd is, and how Mr. Oakapple may have a somewhat stern manner but that he obviously cares a great deal about Lucas and Anne-Marie - a damn sight more than Sir Randolph, at any rate! Mr. Oakapple was always my favourite character. That's why I wish there was fanfiction about this!

If you look on Ao3, there actually is some fanfic - not very much, but a couple of stories!

+lostspook1 I know, because I've read it! 😀 And I'd write it myself if I thought I could do it justice... and if I knew how to post it!

Something interesting - a month ago I was watching Scrooge, and whenever I saw Bob Cratchit I would think "He looks like... He sounds like... but no, surely not". But imagine my delight to find out that the person playing Bob Cratchit was none other than David Collings! So first Mr. Oakapple, and now Cratchit - he seems to be very good at playing Victorian nice guys!

True, although he seems to have started off playing a lot more messed up angsty murderers and aliens and things. He was particularly great as Silver in Sapphire and Steel, I think.

Sadly no, he died of a morphine overdose.
I wish I could find the full series, 'cause I'd love to see Ron Moody again as Gudgeon. Thanks for posting this though.

I remember Simon in so many great children's shows and films. He was particularly well cast
as a young Michael York in GREAT EXPECTATIONS. I'm sorry to learn that he died young.
Was he involved in an accident?

Iv been looking for more personnell information on Simon ,i no he died at 28 of an overdose but there is sum mistery as was it murder or suicide, as there were no proof he was an addict, hes my fav actor from so many tv shows n films,my fav to serve them all my days ,which showed wat a young handsome talent he was but taken so soon ,i really hope the rumour tht he was being groomed by pervert was wrong ,i just hope he had some happyness in his stort life ,as he brough so much joy to my childhood

How is this the only adaptation of a Joan Aiken book? She's such a genius writer. It's one of her less interesting books, too.

I'd disagree on the less interesting front, but there is actually a 1989 film of Wolves of Willoughby Chase and there was a BBC adaptation of Black Hearts in Battersea, plus there have been some radio adaptations, so this isn't the only one! There may have been more - that's just the two I happen to know about.

@@thisbluespirit oh, it's a good book, I just think there are better ones. I forgot about TWOWC film. She wrote so many incredible things, can't imagine why they haven't been filmed, esp the modern thrillers.

@rees276 As someone else has said, I believe he died of an overdose. I don't know v much about him, though - I picked this up because I loved the book & have a liking for David Collings in things. ;-)
