Cold Brew Coffee

  • Also known as Cold-Brewed. I use Cold-Brewed Coffee to make iced coffee, something I especially enjoy on warm afternoons. I used to brew hot coffee and cool it with ice cubes, but I didn't always get the flavor I wanted. With Cold Brew I get a precise ratio of fresh ground coffee and water for a delicious glass of iced coffee every time. It isn't as quick as making hot coffee, but the result is better and I can make a lot of it at one time. It stores well in the refrigerator, good for a week or more. I also show how I make a simple syrup, which stirs into cold coffee much more easily than granulated sugar, which takes a while to dissolve.
Addendum: In this video I mentioned adding two cups of water to finish the process. Now I pour the water into the used grounds to rinse more flavor out of them before adding the liquid to the bottle.

I do enjoy iced coffee time to time but never have made it at home. This video is a good inspiration for me. I drink hot coffee black but cold I need cream and sugar. The proportions here are useful. Thank you Dennis.

Try making your own iced coffee, Eric. You might never go back. And you'll probably save a lot too. --Dennis

Hi Dennis. My summer drink is an Arnold Palmer, so I brew a half gallon jug of strong tea at a time as well as make lemonade from juice and simple syrup. The syrup as you saw was a game changer for me. I make a bottle of it once a month and use it for the lemonade. Thanks Dennis.

I used to drink a lot of lemonade too. A neighbor has a lemon tree and she would often tell me to take the lemons so that she wouldn't need to pick them up off the ground. She doesn't use them. Maybe this summer I'll start making lemonade again. Thanks for the reminder. -Dennis

Nice video, thanks. I use a similar method but repurpose a 64oz grape juice bottle and decant to a 52oz OJ bottle. As an aside, I always have on hand frozen coffee cubes which I use for my iced coffee, to prevent dilution from using plain ice cubes.

That's a really good idea! I just put a coffee ice cube tray in the freezer. I look forward to using them. Thanks for the tip! -Dennis

Thanks Mea. I crave that iced coffee, but here it is 7:30 in the evening. If I have a glass now I'll never fall asleep. I need to buy some decaf. --Dennis

Oh my gosh! How cute! You've made this so simple where everyone tries to make it all complicated. I'm assuming you're using preground coffee, perfectly fine! You're an awesome guy, thanks so much.

Thanks for the positive feedback. I coarsely grind my own whole bean coffee. But other ground coffee would work okay. And it really is simple. I just put another jar in the refrigerator. -Dennis

I have always seen simple syrup 1:1. Glad to know it can be made 1.5:1.

I've even seen formulas of 2:1 called a rich syrup. That might be a little too thick for my needs. Thanks for the comment. -Dennis

Iced coffee sounds good. Your mom had it going on. I thought these iced coffee drinks were a Starbucks invention.

It was coarsely ground whole-bean coffee. I ground the coffee myself a little before doing the video. -Dennis
