Being on camera has been a challenge as well as putting my work in the spotlight to be reviewed and critiqued. But I feel very fortunate to be working Chris. The rewards and energy I am getting back are invaluable. I feel the momentum and it's moving me forward in a positive way. Much love and gratitude to the whole team at The Futur and of course Chris. I'm so glad to be a part of this series The Process.
I can only imagine! My props to you Rebecca for having the guts to do it! I love watching the shows your on and seeing your sweetness. You look lovely btw! Good job everyone! Love the shows!
Rebecca! I love the fact that you're an introvert just like I am! INFJ to be exact (which is what you also appear to be). It takes guts to put your business side out there for a number of reasons! But I can already tell that with what Chris is teaching, any uncomfortable feelings of vulnerability you may feel now will dissipate as you begin to grow and develop a higher level of confidence! I totally hope that for you! :) #KeepitUp
One of the things I like with these sessions is that Rebecca appears like a normal person like most of us are, so we can identify with her uncertainties, the situations she meets, etc. and I find that way more useful than an interview of a design superstar.
If you have found The Futur already and you're only 17 - stick with them. Honestly I did a Diploma in GD a few years ago and I've learned so much more from following their youtube vids. It is honestly so valuable so well done - watch their BRANDING A BUSINESS series about Hamilton Family Brewing - it is BRILLIANT and good luck with your 'futur' career...
Absolutely awesome points! When I ran a coaching business I HAD to learn the art of rapport, asking questions and asking questions that I was scared of asking. Great training for when I kicked off my web business and so many people give feedback that they appreciate the questions that we ask and have them really dig deep into their needs. I also love to concept of charging upfront strategy work rather than just deep diving into "redoing a website" for the sake of it.
I’ve been freelancing for few years and you guys had discussed topics that are so useful and answered questions that I have never had answers to but needed to know, Thank you! WHY hadn’t the channel came up on my feeds earlier before! But I never regret the sh~ts I have gone thru haaa... made me a better person today.
Pro tip: Watch these long dialog videos with 1,5 speed and save some precious time ;) This one is about 30 minutes. Respect from Finland to The Futur team, with quality content every time!
I love every point that was addressed and the transparency was so fluid that it really did make the cloudiness disappear. Thanks for shining that light on us
Chris Do is a remarkable coach. His process is thorough and consistent. I can imagine he attracts high value clients because of the outlook and years of mastering his craft and his desire to grow and inspire others to live their best life. His values have evolved and robbed off across his business and mentees. I actually bless Chris daily in my meditation and support his vision of 1 billion. I hope to say thank you in person one day,. Keep on shining Chris and your amazing team.
What a fantastic episode. Many of the comments I recall being said in past videos. So when Rebecca asks a question I'm now getting better and predicting what you will say. So these videos, to me, are awesome at coaching me along. And I am getting better and better at dialog such as this with my customers. Thank you! #tenpercent
Found this channel a couple months ago and have seen many videos that caught my interest but this series and conversation really connected to me. I have many ideas but practicing the art of conversation and providing value is where I am going to start. Thank you!
Great project insights Chris & Rebecca. I have used 13:58 questions, Scope, timeline and budget. So things got equal. If the client wants to know everything from me and my team I also want to know what will I dive in. With bad clients that is the point where the project ends and it`s a confirmation for that gut feeling. If both sides are open and clear about themselves, in their willing to get the best for the project that is the way to go. -No hidden information. Thanks.
I’m really enjoying this series. Even though it’s focused on design consulting, the topics and issues covered can be applied to other types of consulting generally. A lot of value here 💎
Great episode! Thank you, Rebecca, for always asking great questions and Chris, for your wisdom. It's taking me some time but in every new client call I'm learning to ask better questions and it's making a massive difference.
He uses such wonderful analogies. Paraphrasing here but this was my favourite - "We're working off an operating system that's incorrect. It's flawed. Most of the time it's us writing the code, but that's the good news. We can rewrite the code"
When Chris talks about the gut feeling (at 27:20) 'and the bank account says "take it, take it" and you hate your life afterwards.' That's hilarious because it's true. That spoke to me deep in my soul. I've been there a few times. I thought it was just me being fussy and difficult regarding the clients I choose to work with (and that I'm lucky to be getting work at all so I should just take everything I get). But I know that if I ignore that gut feeling, I'll be miserable and create work I'm not proud of. So now I'm so careful with screening clients. Love watching these videos, guys 😊 Warmest wishes from South Africa
Chris Do, I immediately went and bought The Perfect Proposal after this, as I'm struggling with turning in a proposal. This video really helped me a lot. THANK YOU!
this content is so priceless... It would be awesome to have mentor in a daily basis like Chris. Every now and then I need to check all of it because is so good.
The refunds hurt but I rather refund their money instead of hearing them complain about something else. I just let the client know that this will not work and I give them the money back. Like my other boss used to say "not all business is good business". Great talk guys!!!!
Thanks Chris for this video...TheFutur channel has taught me a lot...not only about the business of design and other topics that are valuable for this industry but also how to overcome fear and how to become a better version of yourself. Powerful life lessons! Many many thanks
This was wonderful, thank you so much. I cannot wait to see a followup to this. Many of Rebecca's questions were things that I wanted to know as well. This was a great and informative talk. Thanks again!
Hi Chris and Rebecca, thank you so much for teaching us different to dealing with client. I have two questions: 1, How do I approach a potential client for web design or branding? 2, How do I approach the budget subject if I approached the client?
hello Levi. 1. Learn about their needs, goals and challenge first. Don't pitch. Learn. 2. Once you find a problem that they also think is valuable, you can ask much easier.
Absolutely Chris.... you are a mine full of diamonds and business wisdom to be discovered and unearthed . I can't wait for the next vids with her 🎬keep them rolling. !🎥😎
Cool one. Every bit of what you said was gems to me. It has cleared plenty of my confusions. Thank you Chris :) Rebecca you are very good and sorted with your questions which also helped many of us. Thank you so much.
The best advice here is to listen to your gut. Respect yourself and your work. Follow that advice and you will be profitable and secure. Your client will get a better fit or no fit if he/she is an **s. I have clients I love and unfortunately some I have fired.
💥💥💥 Wow, Chris this was such a timely and great video to watch. Have a call with a client tomorrow on a web and branding project. Such great info and questions to ask!! Thanks!
I think Chris might be my spirit animal... Totally joking, kindred spirit would be a better word. One of the best episodes I have seen thus far! Thank you for sharing your wisdom, everyday! Btw, proposals have been on my mind. My first reaction was, What?! If the client agrees, I close the deal and send a letter of agreement. When the deposit has cleared, I move forward with work. Now, I am learning how to determine scope better... 🙌😆🙏😍
Thanks, Chris! I am studying and re-watcing, while I work for every little detail. Btw, I would very much like to communicate about where to start investing in myself through your Toolkit. Should I send a message via your website? Please LMK, I know you are a busy guy!
It's like me and The Futur are in sync at the moment. A video like this is released the same time a get an email back from a RFP. This was an awesome episode in dealing with this type of client. And as Chris said, using "The Win Without Pitching Manifesto" as a guide also, I feel so much more confident in dealing with these requests.
Thanks for this futur, I really enjoy all of your videos I’m starting my own business and I’ve learned a lot from you. I would love to keep getting this info from such a knowledgeable staff like yours on business, art direction and many more.. Thanks again
Great video! I would agree with many things that have been said. The only problem I have is that I can't see it working with some companies, like mine for example. I am currently working on the side of the client, not the design company. I prepare RFPs and evaluate bids and in no way my company can accept someone just giving you an estimation/range. Also when we announcing a tender, there is no way we meet with the bidders...We aren't allowed. But I do agree with Chris - meet, discuss give an estimate, review, do the work, send the bill, be happy - is for the best of the client and of the customer.
I know this is an older video, but in more recent videos Chris has talked about Anchoring, where instead of saying $80,000 - $120,000 you would say 120-80. The customer will be anchored to the thing you say first, if you say the cheapest thing first, that’s what they are going to be left thinking about, so when you charge them $95,000 their initial feeling is going to be that it’s more expensive, where as if you said $120,000 first, they would be anchored to that, and now $95,000 sounds like discount
Everything that Chris talked about in 28:00 onwards, is legit true! I've encounter this. I thought I'm just alone to hate my life because of these situation. Saying that "It does goes that far". IT'S TRUE! I got this company that is doing a campaign and now, I haven't received a single payroll. I discontinued the job btw. They did too. It's kinda sad that we had a contract stating that I should be paid X date and delivered all those stuff that needs to be done. It sucks that there's these people.
14:20 I have worked with many clients and certainly stumbled upon some like that, WORSE part is, even if you prepare all questions, they won't be able to answer, leaving you with a huge gray area about the project scope which can hurt you financially and client relationships. I would say avoid those type of clients as much as you can, OR ask details if you don't get details, ask again and again, do not move forward until you get the details you need to create a quote.
This is absolutely what i need to hear. Thank you. Do you have an episode or website where you dive into your list of 'dealbreaker' red-flag checklist that you mentioned in this episode? I've taken a beating by not seeing the red-flags before.
Best thing to do is to offer x money for proposal after fact finding meeting and budget set then to offer to deduct that from the project once they sign
Is Rebecca coming back!? I'd love to see how she's doing now? I know her and Melinda had a couple of segments together and would love to see them again as their journey is so valuable!
7:28 A question I often have, The client wants an estimate, you don't have enough information and getting requirements/project planning/estimating.drafting proposal would take substantial time you should be paid for... you propose that activity as an initial billable phase... How do you price that? Hourly rate for time you think all that will take? Percentage of client-stated budget (or some ballpark budget we can come up with)? What percentage? For example, some assume 1/4 or 1/3 budget of a project goes to analysis and design. How do we get to a number for this phase?
A very informative, on-the-point video. Learning lots from master Do. However, would be nice to see/ hear some advice for someone in a position of a freelancer (a younger design startup with no employees).
I do. I especially like how its visually unique in that it isn‘t the same as the previous season. It‘s warm and fresh; like some nice oven baked content.
Couldn’t agree more. But sadly where i come from, there’s no way clients will share their budget on the first meeting. They always want to collect as many proposals as they can, to get the average price.
I'm your fan, Chris. Do you have any plan making a video about how much salary do graphic designers make? For example, motion graphics designer vs print graphic designer and furthermore art director vs creative director. I've found some assumption salary in Glassdoor and etc, but I always wonder and curious about pragmatic numbers in the industry.
So what is included in a proposal and do you charge money for the proposal? To give the client a price you need to know more information, but not everything because that’s a part of the strategy that you actually ask money for. How to deal with that?
Being on camera has been a challenge as well as putting my work in the spotlight to be reviewed and critiqued. But I feel very fortunate to be working Chris. The rewards and energy I am getting back are invaluable. I feel the momentum and it's moving me forward in a positive way. Much love and gratitude to the whole team at The Futur and of course Chris. You were awesome
i just love her voice and how she talks, i'd definately wait for new episodes or any informative videos that she would be in.
Rebecca Heinemann thank you for putting yourself out there!
One of the things I like with these sessions is that Rebecca appears like a normal person like most of us are, so we can identify with her uncertainties, the situations she meets, etc. and I find that way more useful than an interview of a design superstar.
visualthings perfect. We like Rebecca too!
Hey thanks! I appreciate your comment. Doing these sessions is always hard. I'm glad you got something out of it :)
As a 17 year old, I've been learning information worth thousands and it gives me confidence for the future.

same tayo!
i am 15 y/o. lol
Now you’re 21.
This whole interview is absolute GOLD, but that last 8 mins about "winning without pitching is FLAME!!!
I'm a music producer and mix engineer and all this info translates to my field. This content is pure GOLD.
Making better designers and designer/client relations one video at a time! The Futur is definitely one of my go to resources.
Absolutely awesome points!

or just play it through a set of headphones and go about your day... I have to do that because I never have time to simply watch.
I love every point that was addressed and the transparency was so fluid that it really did make the cloudiness disappear. Thanks for shining that light on us
So Chris is a really smart guy and he has a business coach. This really clears up a lot.
Chris Do is a remarkable coach. His process is thorough and consistent. Thank you KC!
Better than ask what they want, ask what they want to achieve. Great stuff, love this series!
I'm watching this in my lunch break at work because I find it so helpful for self development & so entertaining at the same time. Thank you!
Another strong and informative episode. Chris, you're a designer, teacher, mentor and therapist
i just play one on tv.
and a brony
I wish that episode had way more minutes. That's just amazing.
This channel has to get some kind of award if it hasn't already🏅 so much valuable knowledge.
Thank you.
@@thefutur your response rate is so unbelievable, you must be following that GaryVee advice!

Melinda Livsey the questions you ask are key.
You're rad, Melinda! Wish you amazing success and can't wait to see more of you on the shows :D
@bbmoette thank you! :D

hello South Africa!
Replayed this about 5 times already today. Great episode
ep. 4 is even better.
Chris Do, I immediately went and bought The Perfect Proposal after this, as I'm struggling with turning in a proposal. This video really helped me a lot. THANK YOU!
Thank you.
Love this. We can apply these tips to any business, that's the beauty of it. Thank you for the great content.
this content is so priceless... It would be awesome to have mentor in a daily basis like Chris. Every now and then I need to check all of it because is so good.
Thank you
I went through this exact process earlier this year - a great refresher to hear strategies for "upping your game". Thanks!
The refunds hurt but I rather refund their money instead of hearing them complain about something else. I just let the client know that this will not work and I give them the money back. Like my other boss used to say "not all business is good business". Great talk guys!!!!
better to walk away with your dignity intact.

Glad to hear.
This was wonderful, thank you so much. I cannot wait to see a followup to this. Many of Rebecca's questions were things that I wanted to know as well. This was a great and informative talk. Thanks again!
Great episode and I really enjoy watching it. I can relate so much to myself and all the mistake that I do when approaching a client. Thank you guys!
I appreciate this series, and look forward to the next episode. There are some great insights here - invaluable information - thorough and specific.
Hi Chris and Rebecca, thank you so much for teaching us different to dealing with client. I have two questions: 1, How do I approach a potential client for web design or branding? 2, How do I approach the budget subject if I approached the client?

Just listening to you is cathartic Chris.
awww.
Very valuable video for any size firm. Lots and lots of nuances and insights for creatives. Well done.
Been waiting for this! Thanks again, Rebecca and Chris!
This vid is worth GOLD 👏💣💎💎💎💎💎
and diamonds? : )
Hell Yeah
Absolutely Chris.... you are a mine full of diamonds and business wisdom to be discovered and unearthed . I can't wait for the next vids with her 🎬keep them rolling. !🎥😎
Cool one.
Every bit of what you said was gems to me. It has cleared plenty of my confusions. Thank you Chris :)
Rebecca you are very good and sorted with your questions which also helped many of us. Thank you so much.
the next episode will be even better. check back next week. finishing up the edit.
I'm glad that you are getting something out of this as well :) Thank you for the comment.
The best advice here is to listen to your gut. Respect yourself and your work. Follow that advice and you will be profitable and secure. Your client will get a better fit or no fit if he/she is an **s. I have clients I love and unfortunately some I have fired.
She so sweet and talented. I'm learning so much more! Thanks for sharing 😁
💥💥💥 Wow, Chris this was such a timely and great video to watch. Have a call with a client tomorrow on a web and branding project. Such great info and questions to ask!! Thanks!
just in time learning.
I enjoyed this. Every tidbit of info helps
i'll be your spirit animal. humans are animals. ;)
Thanks, Chris! I am studying and re-watcing, while I work for every little detail. Btw, I would very much like to communicate about where to start investing in myself through your Toolkit. Should I send a message via your website? Please LMK, I know you are a busy guy!
This is worth so much, i cant even handle it
hi bruno. contain yourself. ❤️
if you can't, donate something.
This is my favorite episode. Watched it 5 times lol.
Matthew Benkert the next one is even better Matt!
My goodness, this is gold
I always get this feeling like Chris lit my brain on fire.
Haha
It's like me and The Futur are in sync at the moment. A video like this is released the same time a get an email back from a RFP.
Client says: - "Regarding the budget, we're just trying to get a feel for how much something like this would cost at the moment. So, in short, I'm not sure! This was an awesome episode in dealing with this type of client. And as Chris said, using "The Win Without Pitching Manifesto" as a guide also, I feel so much more confident in dealing with these requests.
#NSync
This video was therapeutic. LOL, I felt I was Rebecca sitting there just taking it! LOL Love this video, watching it again and again.
haha....I surely do get a kick in the butt ;)
Thanks for this futur, I really enjoy all of your videos I’m starting my own business and I’ve learned a lot from you. I would love to keep getting this info from such a knowledgeable staff like yours on business, art direction and many more.. Thanks again

Thank you Chris. Always!
it helps alot, especially if your new to this business
I'm sitting here literally applauding this video lol. Chris is a #BusinessNinja!!!
Great video guys, very insightful. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us :)
Looooove it. Chris is a beast!!!
very very interesting . great interview . thank you .
14:20 I have worked with many clients and certainly stumbled upon some like that,
WORSE part is, even if you prepare all questions, they won't be able to answer, leaving you with a huge gray area about the project scope which can hurt you financially and client relationships.
I've taken a beating by not seeing the red-flags before.
watch good client vs. bad client.
this is gold
Best thing to do is to offer x money for proposal after fact finding meeting and budget set then to offer to deduct that from the project once they sign

Is Rebecca coming back!? I'd love to see how she's doing now? I know her and Melinda had a couple of segments together and would love to see them again as their journey is so valuable!
i hope so. she's kind of busy w/ work.
We shot something recently. Hopefully it gets posted soon ;)
awesome! I can't wait! :D
You guys never fail to have what I need when I have questions about running my design business! Where can I donate?

Great video always an A+++plus infinity every time. Thanks.
:)
Really helpful episode! Thanks!
Great advice Chris!
That was great, thanks guys.
Awesome! Thanks guys
Wow. Your channel subscribers number has exploded! :)
Great episode and well done.
Hard work
Ran! You run! Thanks!
I need that proposal
And I need rewatch the video.
Great job, really great job
Thumbs up. Absolutely great content.
thank you.
This is good!!!!! More if this
A very informative, on-the-point video. Learning lots from master Do. However, would be nice to see/ hear some advice for someone in a position of a freelancer (a younger design startup with no employees).
that's our next series. some young guns going to get coached up.
Yes!!!
Awesome insight!
This is real good.
good questions!
The color on this is on P O I N T!
you like the orange and teal color correction?
I do. I especially like how its visually unique in that it isn‘t the same as the previous season. It‘s warm and fresh; like some nice oven baked content.
we play around riley.
"Just ask" ... lesson learned :P
Couldn’t agree more. But sadly where i come from, there’s no way clients will share their budget on the first meeting. They always want to collect as many proposals as they can, to get the average price.
you'd be surprised once you learn how to talk about budget. there are videos on this on our channel.
A very enjoyable video.
Thanks a lot
I'm your fan, Chris.
Do you have any plan making a video about how much salary do graphic designers make? For example, motion graphics designer vs print graphic designer and furthermore art director vs creative director. I've found some assumption salary in Glassdoor and etc, but I always wonder and curious about pragmatic numbers in the industry.

Great info and great filter you used for this video or is it that amazing camera Chris mentioned the other day?
great exposure and lighting followed up with some TLC in color correction.
Thanks!
(before I watched this) Very nice Thumbnail!
thanks!
Fantastic video! Thank you, Chris.
I just had one question - How do I share the proposal? Are we looking at an online platform or a pdf?
you should try to present it in person if possible. otherwise a pdf and a call.
So what is included in a proposal and do you charge money for the proposal? To give the client a price you need to know more information, but not everything because that’s a part of the strategy that you actually ask money for. How to deal with that?
