  • Electronic drumsets cost alot. And It's tempting to skimp on the headphones. But how much should you be spending for a decent quality? I answer that in this video.

      I just thought the exact same, I just love how pragmatic Justin's videos are. There are so many reviews out there that will spend hours talking about small things that hardly matter for most of us regular dudes, and will give you the obvious info of "this budget ______ is crap, just make a proper purchase and spend 10x more on this one instead". Definitely not the case with 65 Drums, thanks a lot!

    I haven't played drums in a few years, but when I first got into eDrums (DTXtreme IIS) I used a pair of consumer grade headphones, they sounded good but what I noticed was when recording the kit, it would sound so very different on speakers, due to them being consumer grade, they enhanced certain frequencies so when I set up my eDrum kits, I went by the sound of those headphones. I later bought a pair of AKG studio headphone, they do NOT color the sound in any way, so when I set up my eDrum kits with these, the sound was pretty much universal on any listening device when recorded.
    Just something to keep in mind especially if you plan on recording. :)

    8:11 Most audiophile-grade headphones are open-backed because it creates a much wider soundstage than what you would experience on a closed-back model. Soundstage refers to the amount of positional sound is present (hearing things on the left or right, above or below, etc.). It makes the signal sound like it is coming from the room around you, rather than from the speakers right next to your ears. It provides a more immersive listening experience that a lot of audiophiles expect from their headphones. However for what you typically use headphones for as a drummer, I would steer clear of them.

    Used HD-280 Pros for years until the plastic headband cracked. They sounded fabulous. Have been using Audio Technica ATH-M50x since. A bit more "bassy" than the Sennheisers, but still a great sound. I kinda like the extra bass for using with my e-kit, actually. For live gigs with acoustic drums, I definitely prefer my JH Audio in-ears for the look and fantastic isolation. But I just have their lowest end dual driver JH-5 and they don't quite have the low end of the M50x cans, so I stick with those for e-drumming

    So I just bought the TD17 kvx and originally ordered the Vic firth based on my acoustic recording experience. They isolate well but sound like ass. Based on your suggestion sent them back and ordered the HD280. Wow! I think they are just as good as the Beyerdynamics that I had with my old TD6v. Thanks Justin! Side note, the left side of my rack for the TD17 seems to have an uneven leg. Looks to be leaning a bit. I tried adjusting but when I do, I feel as though the drums lean more than they do with the actual leg leaning. Confused? Yeah me too. They are on a pretty thick carpet so wonder if that’s the issue.

    I bought the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro in 2008 before I ever had an ekit. People would give me weird looks on campus because I used them with my iPod. I now wear them indoors only for my electronic drums! They're great even 10 years later.

    Really enjoy your videos. Just want to say, those expensive ($400 or so) headphones are usually open back since this way you can get a wider and more natural soundstage, by the cost of decreasing the isolation (as well as sound leakage). So if you don't want to hear the noise you hit the rubber or mesh, you may want to skip the open back ones. (Just not because you don't want others to hear you.)

      I'd be very cautious with that Forge kit... I'm in the process of returning one now. There are a number of things with that module that were very disappointing to me. I'd be curious to know what features you're looking for that you think the Forge kit will meet - there were a lot of things I thought I was getting with that kit, that turned out to be missing.

    • @wk2905.
      @wk2905. 7 років тому

      Hi. There is plenty reasons why I picked Forge Kit:
      1. Pads are 8" and snare is 11". This is the biggest kit that I can get for that price range. For example Yamaha DTX450K have 7,5" toms and snare (snare in Yamaha have 3 zones, but it is not that important to me for now). And Roland TD1-KV pads are only 6" and snare 8" with mesh head, but I can live with rubber pad snare :).
      2. Forge kit have kick pad that I can mount my double pedal from my acoustic drum set. Roland in that price have no kick pad (like in TD1 model) or pad is too small like in ROLAND TD-4KP.
      3. I read about module and I think I can connect it to my laptop and install some samples. I dont really know if I can load some kit sounds like for example Matt Garstka's Metal Fusion Midi Line, but I hope I can do that with this module.
      4. Price is right, and I found 25% discount in one of the shops (promotion lasts for a few days). So I can get Forge Kit in almost Alesis Nitro Kit price.
      It would be very helpful if you could share more information about what was disappointing to you.

    • @SchusterLagoon
      @SchusterLagoon 7 років тому +3

      I'm happy to provide my experience with the Forge kit... hate to see someone go through the same mess that I did!
      - I saw a number of videos that claim that the module is the same between the Forge/Command and even Crimson kits. This is absolutely not true. The modules look the same, but they do not work the same. With the Forge module, you get one dual zone input - the snare. All other inputs are single zone only. Part of why I'm very disappointed with Alesis now is that before I bought the Forge kit, I watched a bunch of videos where Alesis reps clearly stated that the modules were the same. Also, I emailed Alesis support and asked specifically if the Forge module would work with a 2/3 zone ride cymbal. The response I got back from Alesis was Yes, it will work, and they even gave me the part number for their DM Pad 14" 3 zone ride cymbal. After buying the kit and discovering that this would not work, I spoke with another tech at Alesis, who said, yeah, sorry, that other guy was wrong. After days on the phone with them, I got a supervisor to agree to replace my Forge module with a Command module since they obviously lied about the modules.
      - I was also excited to use a double bass pedal with the kit. After hooking up my pedal, I was able to get both beaters to register, but when I played anything medium to fast, it would begin to miss notes. Not just one note here or there, but more like half of the notes when playing fast. I found a couple comments on an online forum about this exact same issue, and there was a recommendation to use a separate cable between the kick pad and the extra Tom 4 input on the module. I tried this, and it worked perfectly - just had to go into the module and assign a kick drum sound to the Tom 4 input. So, this will work, but it eats up one of the extra inputs, and it makes me question the module that much more.
      - The majority of the sounds in the preset kits are very over-processed and gimmicky. Yeah it's funny to play the xylophone sounds, and the 80's electronic sounds, but they grow old fast. There are maybe 4 or 5 kits that I would ever use. I ended up trying out EZ Drummer 2 on a laptop with the USB MIDI connection, and the sounds are incredible. To be fair, this will be the case with any brand kit until you get into the $2500+ kits.
      - The ability to import samples via USB sounds neat, but it's important to understand the limitations here. The samples you can import are not dynamic instrument sounds with varying volume for soft versus hard hits. So, if you import a cool snare drum sample, you will get the exact same sound if you play the drum soft or hard... it's not a natural drum effect. If you are looking to trigger recordings or sound effects, it will work just fine - but don't think you are going to be able to load custom drum sets this way.
      - The kick pad is very noisy. I play with both a drum amp, or headphones (AudioTechnica M20X)and I found the noise of the kick pad distracting unless I turned the volume up very high.
      Ultimately, I feel like the Forge kit is great for a beginner, or a kid, but not for someone that has experience on an acoustic kit. Certainly for $400, it has a lot to offer - and I don't know that there really is a better choice at that price point. Personally, I became very unhappy with the false claims about the module, and dealing with Alesis support was terribly frustrating. Had I went ahead with having them swap the module out with the Command module, it would probably have resolved most of my issues related to the inputs... but I really started to feel like it was just a pile of band-aids holding together a flawed product.
      I've ended up deciding on the Roland TD11K kit, and was lucky enough to have a local shop discount it down to $799. So, I'm doubling the money I originally spent on the Forge kit, but I'll have a basic kit that does what it's supposed to, and will allow me to upgrade pads/cymbals as I grow with the kit. I think the bottom line is that ANY e-drum kit under $800 is going to be a disappointment for someone that has experience playing the drums. Sorry for the novel... just want to help others avoid the mess I got into.

    • @wk2905.
      @wk2905. 7 років тому

      Thank you for all the information :)
      I would have never thought, that the kick pad will cause problems. I didn't know about one zone inputs also. So at least playing with EZ Drummer would work..
      All the information you provided are very helpful. I will consider all that aspects and I will definitely spend a few days more on google and research before I buy something.
      But it's really scary that I need to browse all sites with people opinions, forums etc to get accurate information. Even tech support is not telling the truth... All you wrote should be in Alesis site, just under Forge Kit picture :) but it will never happen :)
      I think you got a great deal with Roland kit. I am going to stay in

      Hey Joseph! You don't need a roland memory stick to update the TD25. Just take a USB cable from your computer and run it to the module. You can download any drivers you may need from the roland Website. On a side note: If you want to play WAV files from a memory stick you have plugged in to the module, make sure you run a google search to see if the brand you want to buy is compatible with Roland drum modules.

    Hi Justin. Have you used the Roland RH-300V headphones? I was wondering how they sound with v-drums, since they are supposedly made specifically for them. Thanks!

      The whole series look like copy-cats of existing headphones. Probably not bad at all, but might be cheaper going with the OG. This one looks like the Audio Technica M50x. The others look like the closed back studio or DJ stuff from sony, pioneer and sennheiser.

    Have you tried the the roland rh 300v? Supposedly they were engineered specifically for electronic drums. I'm curious if they're just mediocre cans with a $200 price tag because they are Roland? I can't seem to find any decent video reviews.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  7 років тому

      I'd have to say "engineered for drums" is more of a marketing thing. All it means is that they can handle bass. But those are nice headphones. I just read a comment from a someone on this video that owns one, and likes it alot.

    I can absolutely recommend the Beyer Dynamic product line.
    What I don't like about the Sennheisers is the the all plastic parts.
    The brackets of the (better) Beyer Dynamic Headphones are made of metal and seem to be more durable and longer lasting.

    I use flat-response studio monitor/mixing headphones - Sennheiser EH2270. Discontinued now, but when these wear out or break, I'll get whatever their current studio model is. If your intention is recording, then think like a studio engineer and hear "the whole truth" of your pre-mix sound - no enhancements. This enables you to optimize the EQ you have on your module or whatever else before it goes on a track or into a board and then monitors or mains, etc.
    Oh, and "Beats" suck. -10 for even mentioning that overhyped trendy garbage.
    Otherwise, for just practicing, you can get pretty far with good ear buds, especially those that incorporate an ear plug designed for industrial-grade ear protection. Don't forget about bluetooth options to get rid of the annoying cord when practicing or when just moving around a lot during a recording project.
    Beyond that, you mention Bose - The old Quiet Comfort 15's are some of the best-sounding over-ear active noise-canceling headphones ever, and easily under a hundred bucks on ebay now. You can get aftermarket replacement foam pads for just a few dollars on ebay, too. Getting rid of the rubber hit sounds is easy enough, but for playing with a band in a studio or church gig with a monitor mix you can control, casual listening, flying on a noisy airplane, or reviewing post-mix, Bose 15's still sound great.

    Hi folks!
    I am interested for Sennheiser HD 280 Pro to use with roland td-07dmk.But someone said me that I need low impedance headphones for td-07 module to have enough power and volume. So I am in doubt because HD 280 Pro's is 64 ohm. Is it will be good or I have rather to use 32 ohms headphones?Also I dont wont to buy headphones amp.
    Thnx for replays!

    You should try the Beyerdynamic 770 M, specialy made for drums, they have a super strong isolation (-35db) and an excellent well balanced sound. You will not hear any mesh head sound or even pads sound. It's expensive but for e-drummers, it's the best choice !

    I know looks are important for a lot of folks, but IMHO if it works for ME I don't care WHAT others think!
    As for me, I am a fan of the ATH-40fs (renamed 40x) because of it's mid-range. To my ears it is the best I have heard in a headphone. The ATH-50x just did not compare in the mids, and they got returned.
    Open backed headphones sound more natural, with a wider sound stage. Closed back are a little more "choked" or "compressed" in the sound stage, with the extreme lows & highs slightly soft sounding, at least to my ears.
    Also, after finding your set of headphones, think about getting a butt-kicker to put on your throne. I went low budget and hit Parts Express and bought 2 DAVE Bass Exciters for $30 and attached them to my drum throne. Toss in an $8 stereo amp with 18 watts a side and for less than $50 I have a tactile feel on my e kit.....all the drums have "real" impact now. Not as good as a real Butt Kicker or a nice floor wedge monitor, but enough to enhance the experience.
    I think you would really like doing this Justin!

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  7 років тому

    An important issue when buying expensive headphones is the amount of ohms (power) the headphones need to operate correctly. Some of the higher tier headphones use over 100-200-250 ohms, and in most cases your drum module will not be able to send that amount of power back to the headphones, so you’re just using an expensive product and not having the benefits of it, and probably getting a very low volume…

    If you just play edrums for practice, expensive headphones that are studio grade can get kinda pointless, I use my e kit to practice at home but I have an acoustic set I play for church drumming. you would probably need good headphones/in ears for something like that so you can get the eq sounding good, (I have a mixer of my own so I can eq the drum mics) cause you want the audience to enjoy the playing and the sound of the drums

    Hey brother! I wanted to ask you a question and hope you can see it and respond! I have been a drummer for quite some years and since i live in an apartment i never had the chance to have my own physical kit for obvious reasons. I finally decided to buy some E-Drums at the range of 500 $. My question is this. Do you think the Millenium MPS-750 Mesh kit is any good? It difinitely meets my own standards but since you are more experienced i was hoping you could lend me your magic hand! Hope to see your answer soon! Keep on drumming brother!

    Hi Justin, im looking into getting drums, im a beginner at best, been a few years since I had time behind a drumset. I live with my parents because im an apprentice, we live far away from the furthest neighboor, and the room I will have my drumset will be seperate from the house. Would you recommend an accoustic or electric drumset? I'm kinda afraid my mother will get irritated if I keep practicing the same thing for an hour + per day..
