Good list. To me, 13 Sentinels and Odin Sphere Leifthrasir are interchangeable at first place depending on what mood you're in and ranking Muramasa at anything lower than a 3 is a hard sell for me.
My only problem with Odin sphere leifthasir is there is not reason to start a new game after you beat it. You can see all cinemas anytime, can beat the bosses anytime, etc. It's one of my favorite games ever!

Odin Sphere and Muramasa are my top favorites from Vanillaware, but I love the others too that I played so far (GrimGrimoire and Dragon's Crown). I haven't yet gotten my hands on a copy of 13 Sentinels, but it's on the wishlist!
PSA: Gameplay-wise, Dragon's Crown is the best and possibly the best Beat 'em Up ever made. Story-wise, Odin Sphere and 13 Sentinels are both excellent although completely different. Challenge-wise, Muramasa is very satisfying. There's also an english translation of the excellent PSP RPG Grand Knights History out there that I recommend Vanillaware fans to check out.
13 sentinels is the type of game that checks all the boxes what does not appeal to me yet it still manage to be what I consider a masterpiece and a GOAT material Kinda shows how passionate these developers are and that even if the game does not appeal to you it can still be a Top tier game if it’s executed properly
I like these cooperative videos. You get the perspective of multiple JRPG fans. They bring out ideas and thoughts about the games that just one of them might not have expressed by themselves if that makes sense.
for me it's GrimGrimoire, Muramasa, Grand Knights, 13 Sentinels, Odin's Sphere, and then Dragon's Crown on top. Dragon's Crown has almost unlimited play value, and is still and absolute blast online some 7 years later.
While Dragon's Crown is pretty light on narrative, I loved the way the world and story were presented. For me it scratches that D&D type fantasy itch better than anything else.
Out of the ones I've completed, I'd say 1.) Oboro Muramasa, because I think Kamitani's style works best with that very traditional Japanese style, and the animations for combat just look too damn good. I didn't have all that much of an issue with the story or length, because I was just too captured by anything else. It's one of my favorite games of all time. 2.) 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim, my 2020 GOTY for putting out one of the most ambitious storylines in a video game, only matched by the Root Double visual novel and maybe Zero Escape. I loved the depth of the gameplay, despite taking some time to really get into after the tutorial, but I was all in on the sci-fi storyline from beginning to end. 3.) GrimGrimoire, despite the story not being as ambitious as 13 Sentinels, I actually kind of like it more. Lillet Blan is one of the best protagonists in a game for how much she's gone through and how much she's persevered, despite being so young. The gameplay is very dated for the time, but honestly worth checking out. You can actually play it as a PS2 classic on the PS3, if you still have one, but it could really do with some QoL improvements on a current gen system. I haven't completed Dragon's Crown yet because, to be honest, I find it hard to really get into. Especially since I'm not a co-op player in general. Still, looks beautifully exaggerated, and I'm all for it. Odin's Sphere is kinda tricky for me. When I originally played it, it was on the PS2 as a classic, similar to GrimGrimiore, and I got bored quickly due to the gameplay. Then I played the PS4 version, and the updates really helped me get engrossed into it far more. I just haven't had the time to actually complete it, but I want to.
I'm playing 13 sentinels now and I loved it from the opening. I went back and forth for awhile on whether I was going to play it or not and boy am I glad u did. Fantastic story, great character and fun combat.
Love the banter between you both but Dragon's Crown is in our top 3 but hey that is what makes these top 5 top 10 lists so fun is the agreements the disagreements and the discussions :). Thanks Erick and Reggie
There's this channel called UnPlayedAThing that played the game and summerized the plot the best he could. It wasn't a perfect translation but I think it's the best we got.
I'm playing 13 Sentinels now, I picked it up when it was on-sale in the PS4 store. Loving every minute of it and every chapter opens more and more details and clues... crazy!
Indeed a great Vanillaware games tier list! But honestly, Muramasa rebirth, including the dlc's, is probably my favorite vw game, even one of my top five life time games. Gorgeous gameplay and great music. Odin Sphere became the masterpiece it is now until the leifthrasir release. I played Grand Knights History and what a great RPG, it sure can have a spot on the top 5 vw games
I wholeheartedly agree with the #1 spot. Odin sphere is my #1 favorite game of all time. I bought a ps vita and played this and persona 4 golden. Totally worth buying the system just for these 2 games.
Dragon's Crown is my favorite. I love the setting and style - I understand why the character designs are controversial but you have to admit it makes the game memorable. I agree that the screen can get a bit messy at times and the gameplay loop can get a bit repetitive, but I haven't loved a fantasy setting as much since Valkyrie Profile. I'd love to see a Dragon Crown sequel with more classes, outfits and variety in dungeons
My favorite is the one that wasn't released in the west (grand knight history). The only others I've played was odin sphere and muramasa, absolutely loved, but agree that it's too short.
Ahhhh yeah. Reggie MY MAN! Also, dope ass video. I'm really like ur channel because I'm learning about RPGs. I want to try one for the PS4 now that I got time to play. Your channel is just Knowledge up the ass. I love it.
Muramasa is short if you only go for the main story, if you try to complete all the optional boss fights it can probably take 5 hours more. And I'm not even talking about the DLC stories, it takes at least 2 hours to complete each one. It's a masterpiece and it deserves a remaster in 4K because it's certainly the best Vanillaware game in terms of art.
When they were talking about Dragon's Crown I was thinking "It's like Vanillaware wanted to make their own version of Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara"... Never would I have thought that it was because Kamitani actually worked on that project for Capcom and wanted to make another game like that one...
I love Vanillaware games. I remember reading an article where it said the company is 100% artists, and programming is secondary. My favorite is probably Odin Sphere. I have 13 sentinels but haven't played it yet.
Only disagreement i have is the position of Grim Grimoire. i would trade it with Muramasa and leave it at last and Muramasa at third. i agree with the issues you mentioned about it but still...to this day Muramasa is the most artistically beautiful game i have ever played. the backgrounds are all breathtaking. the Battlefield, the flower fields, the view from heaven...all those are masterpieces or artistic design. Other than that, fully aggree on the list. 13 Sentinels has a better story but Odin's Sphere wins for overall balance. Liked the gameplay more, the story is also awesome and the universe building is amazing. and the narrative is just as good as 13 Sentinels. Kinda unfair to rank the best and worst Vanillaware games, since the title of worst Vanillaware game still puts it above 99.9% of all the games out there.
The story for 13 Sentinels is INCREDIBLE. I wish the gameplay was equally as enthralling. I understand the story reasons why the game is the way it is, but I didn’t find it too fun. Odin Sphere definitely earned its spot. I also really love Dragon’s Crown. I need to play Grim Grimoire!
I thoroughly enjoyed 13 Sentinels. It perfectly showcases that you don't need to reinvent the wheel to make a good game. The story is great despite having twists and elements I've seen in many other sci-fi stories. The gameplay is just a refinement of things we've seen before. In the end, you still come away feeling like you just experienced something great. It's a great example of the sum being greater than its parts.
They did kinda reinvent the wheel though lol. 13 controllable characters in a VN + real time tower defense strategy is not exactly common. Obviously, it's not a complete invention, but this combination is a huge experiment that almost flopped until people started advertising by word of mouth.
I got 3 out of the 5 Games. First played Muramasa the Demon Blade on the Wii in 2010, loved it. Then played Dragon's Crown in 2014 on the PS3, LOVED IT that I also got the PS Vita version. I eventually played Odin's Sphere and so happy this was released on the PS3 and also got the PS Vita version so I could restart the game and play it on the road. Considering some of those games also got PS4 releases, you could get most of Vanillaware's classics on one system despite a few games that were limited to 1 console like the PS2 or one game that is Muramasa that only had Wii as a console release and PS Vita release on that handheld system. Though I know I may never get a PS4 or a PS5 due to how SONY is now with their censorship of Anime games, but I was lucky enough to get some of Vanillaware's games on the PS Vita that I know how great this niche Japanese developer is simply because they still stuck with 2D games and only using 3D Gameplay just to make the characters walk towards the camera or away from the camera but still keep the gameplay all 2D side scroll action.
Got 13 sentinels day 1 but still haven't finished it, because i found the visual novel type gameplay boring. But i will give it another chance, and i'm looking forward to see Vanillaware's next project. And i definitely agree with number 1, one of my favourite games
My main problem with Odin Sphere (besides the slowdown) was the aspect ratio... the game was beautiful but I was basically always playing from that super basic minimap in the corner cuz you're pretty much in range of the enemies before you can see them on the main screen. I heard that they switched from 4:3 to 16:9 so that probably helped that considerably. Still kind of seems like 21:9 would be better still though.
Remake of a remake or should it just get ported? XD I'd be happy either way, though I still can enjoy it on vita also. I also still have my Wii version lol.
I don't agree with the length of Muramasa Rebirth, it's 5/6 hours for the MAIN story, but it has planty of Secrets, the weapons that you have to unlock, multiple endings per characters and optional side quest and bosses, you can easily reach 25-30 hours or more, so is not true that it has a short length, the Replay value is great, same thing about Dragon's Crown.
IMHO, those two should be top list: Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir (which improves such much on the original release) might one of the best side scroller around. Enthralling story and good combat mechanics. Dragon's Crown is one of the best Beat Them Up around (D&D: Mystara Chronicles / Golden Axe) and it is unfair to judge such game on the story. In 2021, even Streets Of Rage 4 feels a bit short compared to Dragon's Crown. So I guess Grim Grimoire or 13 Sentinel might be as well among the best games in the category they belong. Now Atlus and Vanillaware, share those gems on PC and other platforms.
I kind of predicted Muramasa would be in last place. I have to agree, the game is so fun but way too short. Completeing it in a single day made me feel Like I did something wrong
Apparently, you're not the only one who thinks Odin sphere is vanillaware's masterpiece. First of all, it's the longest game he's ever made. Above all, his remake/remaster (leifdrasir), greatly improves the original title.
Awesome tag team video you did here guys, but Muramasa is NOT and Action RPG, is a Metroidvania style title with some RPG elements...so you put it the last ranked just because is not an rpg....that makes no sense, for me is the best of Vanillaware, less repetitive and more playable than 13 sentinels or Odin Sphere. And by the way you didn´t mention the blue print of all Vanillaware games: Princess Crown on the Saturn, I know it never came from Japan (someday I hope it does) but it is one of the best from this mastermind game creators
This is such a coincidence I recently just won an eBay bid on Muramasa Rebirth Vita Collectors Edition!! One of my favorite games. Love Muramasa (Vita/Wii) and Odin Sphere (PS4/PS3/Vita) don't like the PS2 port tho, it really chugs on PS2 For me Odin Sphere then Muramasa (haven't played the others because they just didn't grab my attention as much, makes me really happy people are enjoying 13 Sentinels but I'm very selective with real time strategy)
I absolutely agree with Reggie's take on Muramasa. It really should have been on the ps2. Especially the re-release being a beautiful game tied to a tiny screen, its just criminal. I did not like Dragon's Crown AT ALL. Too clunky and fanservicey for me with no good story. I have always been curious about Grim Grimoire because I love witches and female protags, but the battle system turns me off, never liked that kind of game. 13 Sentinels again, looks gorgeous but I just can't play that sort of battle system. I'm very happy for people that like it though! Yes Odin Sphere number 1!! My only gripe is that the gameplay just gets too repetitive. As does Muramasa's. Hearing that the ps4 remake is better in terms of gameplay makes me eager to revisit it.
I liked odin sphere leifthrasir but I didn't like starting at level 1 so many times. It's just slightly annoying but is canceled out by the different play styles of the characters.
The funny thing with me about Odin Sphere is back when I played it on PS2, I loved the graphics, I loved the story, the music and the characters. But on PS2 I thought the gameplay was complete and utter garbage, I hated the gameplay, I hated because it was so bad I just didn't enjoy playing the game and as a result it was preventing me for enjoying this game, I was constantly thinking "Man the game has so much going on for it why the gameplay has to sucks so much." it was making the game, which I really wanted to love, so unfun to play, I just stopped playing it and watch the rest of the story on youtube. YEAH for me gameplay is really the most important part, while a game with a bad story but a good gameplay is still very good, you can make the best story ever if the gameplay sucks the game will sucks. So you cannot imagine how much fucking hype I was when they announce the Remake, and they show the first trailers showing how much they improve the gameplay, really that's what I wanted take Odin Sphere, give it a good gameplay and keep everything else, and for sure the Remake instantly becomes one of my favorite games ever, so yeah I'm so grateful to Vanillaware for Remaking this game, otherwise Odin Sphere would have been stuck in my memories as that PS2 game that had so much potential but was plague by a bad gameplay.
Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir is exactly how a remake should be done (I felt like about Odin Sphere on PS2 and could not bear to grind and complete the true ending). I can't imagine a remaster without any improvements other than graphics. (Metro Exodus: We are watching you). But it is costly. Dragon's Crown Pro got enhanced graphics and an orchestral soundtrack but no change or addition in the gameplay (which is quite top notch...even if I find the loot system a bit too much and the pacing between branches a bit slow)
Excellent video man, I don't yet play Sentinels but don't seems very good for my taste, the best game to me is Muramasa because the gameplay, and finally Odin Sphere is gets very boring to me after playing with the first 2 characters.
@@vel2118 that game is way too detailed to explain here in a text. It's actually not that hard to grasp once you learn how the basics work. Before that game originally came out I had never played a strategy game like that before. It's kinda like an RPG but I guess technically it isn't but I still love it. I love jrpgs and anime so I had to try it and oh my god was I blown away. The art, music and voice acting are phenomenal! Vanillaware are masters at the games they make
Odin Sphere is the best, no contest. I have yet to play Dragon's Crown for real though. Muramasa was a huge disappointment. By the way, for all Vanillaware fans out there, there is an amazing game called The Vagrant. I dunno what platforms it was released for, but I bought it on Steam. Really great ARPG and looks exactly like a VW game
Currently playing 13 Sentinels. The story so far is really good.
Finished the game yesterday. I loved it so much.
Even though it's Atlus & technically not Vanillaware (but LEAD to them), I like to connect Princess Crown to them, as it influenced Kamitani's career, leading to the founding of VW, & Princess Crown's spiritual successor, Dragon's Crown.

13 Sentinels is one of the greatest stories I've ever experienced in my entire life.

te picture behind Reggie is the guy from the channel Gamez of war?
Odin sphere is a masterpiece. Own every port ever release.
I'm usually not into strategy games but 13 Sentinels looks dope af. Gonna have to check that out.
Maybe is not the worst but not having a version of muramasa in recent consoles is a damm shame!
Is it just me, or does anyone else air guitar Eric's theme song?
You do know that Muramasa Rebirth has A LOT of dlc content with extra characters, right. About 3 or 4 extra characters with extra stories
IMHO, those two should be top list:
Odin Sphere: Leifthrasir (which improves such much on the original release) might one of the best side scroller around.
Only thing better than Muramasa on the PS Vita with the OLED screen?
Playing on the PS TV on a full sized OLED TV :)
Im in love with Odin Sphere
Odin Sphere and Muramasa Rebirth are my all time faves. Have yet to play 13 Sentinels.
Odin Sphere Leifthrasir deserves the number 1 spot.
Apparently, you're not the only one who thinks Odin sphere is vanillaware's masterpiece.
First of all, it's the longest game he's ever made. Above all, his remake/remaster (leifdrasir), greatly improves the original title.
I hope atlus ports vanilla ware games to more consoles
Love Muramasa (Vita/Wii) and Odin Sphere (PS4/PS3/Vita) don't like the PS2 port tho, it really chugs on PS2
For me
Odin Sphere then Muramasa (haven't played the others because they just didn't grab my attention as much, makes me really happy people are enjoying 13 Sentinels but I'm very selective with real time strategy)
for play value Dragon Crown >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> rest of Vanilla Ware games.
For story 13 Sentinels>>>>>>>Odin Sphere>>>>>>Grim Grimoire>>>>>>Muramasa
Grimgrimoire is available on PSN. At least I got it for PS3.
You're correct, it was on sale a few times.
@@personavisceration371 thanks! I only have a PS3 and wasn't sure if it was available on the 4.
If you play Muramasa Rebirth make sure to pick up the DLC. It is better than the main story. 4 new characters with short campaigns
Nice hat, space cowboy.
Gracias x Estos videazos bro vivan los jrpg
PSA grimgrimoire is available as a ps2 classic on the ps store for ps3! $9.99
All the vanilla ware girls he could choose for thumbnail and he chose megumi lol
Alright a Dynamic Duo😀
I liked odin sphere leifthrasir but I didn't like starting at level 1 so many times. It's just slightly annoying but is canceled out by the different play styles of the characters.
Radical Reggie with his friend Mickey Rourke
Man it's shame You didn't Even talked about Muramada Dlcs to me they make the Game way better
13 Sentinels I haven’t try it yet, but looks like Story is more than gameplay. Idk if imma have fun with game mechanics
Epic anime crossover here!
Grimgrimore is absolutely amazing! ❤️❤️❤️❤️ One of my favorite games ever!
how do you get good at it ? i’m always loosing what’s the trick? I’m new at strategy rpgs
Vanillaware are masters at the games they make
Sure would like Leithransir ported to Steam.
Respectfully man, you should let your guest speak more.
