  • ACP396 What Is Affecting Pilot Hiring In 2024?
It is now July 2024, and we have been in a hiring slowdown for more than half a year and it is deepening. In January I Discussed 12 Actions To Take During A Hiring Slowdown this year but I also wanted to add some more color to that episode.
Since that episode, we started a group coaching mastermind where we give industry updates on a monthly basis along with an inspirational message, informational topic, and a question and answer session. In today’s episode, I am going to replay the industry update section of the March mastermind group because I think it would be helpful for you to understand the current hiring environment.
If you are interested in joining the mastermind group coaching you can try it for one month for free using the coupon code “CoachItForward” I think it is very helpful and is a nice addition to our on-one coaching because it keeps you inspired, informed, and motivated. Seems like a bad time in aviation hiring might be the better time to get involved since it takes years to all the ratings and experience you need to take advantage of opportunities. I know a few people who started a few years ago when things were great and now that they are ready the jobs are gone. If things stay slow then less people will begin training and when things pick up there will be a pilot shortage again.

I'm lucky enough to have an income which can afford to finance my flying. However I need to justify that expense. If I'm going to spend $100,000 in training just to qualify I expect to see three times that in my annual salary.

Another nice podcast Carl. Most of the scholarships have a clear age eligibility to apply, so I am not sure if I should even apply to get a response. Thoughts?

Thank you for the feedback. There is a section in the guide "Scholarship For Adults" which is in the process of being changed to Nontraditional Scholarships. Hope this helps.

That's fine and all; however you don't account for the cost of flying those hours. Just keep flying and rack up hours in your lock book. Well when you spend $100,000 flying airplanes and you haven't made a penny because nobody's hiring when can I expect a return on my investment? It's not a hobby it's a career. You make an investment expecting a specific percentage as a return. Do you really want to put up that kind of money and not see a return or a dividend from The investment in 5 to 10 years? After considering the cost of living and what you profit from your daily expenses, are you doing any better as a pilot then if you just kept your current job? You might be better off investing in the Fortune 500.

An investment in flight training will return many times the initial investment over time through compensation including retirement contributions. Concerning hiring, the reason I started career coaching is to help people get hired even in a challenging environment. To learn more visit www.aviationcareerspodcast.com/coaching/
