- Natalia left for a trip to the mainland, so I decided to take a 3 day solo sailing trip around the island of O'ahu, Hawaii. Bee stings, dolphins, and fishing make for a really fun and challenging solo trip.

When single handing the centre cleat is your friend. Worth trying a little exercise whilst in the slip to see how your boat behaves. With your other mooring lines slack and the centre cleat holding you in position. In slow ahead, try to steer and see how it pivots. It should be possible to hold the boat parallel to the dock. You can also use the prop wash to align the boat for departure.
When docking you will naturally use power astern to slow you down. If you have a right hand prop, the prop walk will naturally push the stern to port. With mooring lines secure, put the engine into astern and see which side has the most turbulence, imagine this as a stern thruster.
Seth: Recommendation, please wear your life vest when sailing alone. Remember your safety officer will reviewing this video. Wouldn’t it be better to sleep in hammock when anchored in Rollie conditions?
