I chum the same way but hook the crabs differently, there is a soft spot behind the claw that i go through then straight out the back. They stay alive longer that way. Also, have a net handy, when they get to the 5+ lb range there gonna be tough to sling in. Another tip, you cant set the hook too hard. Sometimes it will catch a tooth and never make it through the mouth. Mud crabs seem to do better for me than fiddlers. Also, if you have urchins available, use them. Hands down the way to catch monsters. Cut the spines off with scissors, hook them from the bottom then come out the side. Make a small crack in the shell to get the juice flowing. I use a pretty heavy set up, penn battle 5000 and medium heavy rod. Set the drag fairly tight and hold on. So fun
This makes a lot of sense to me now after seeing it (both the scraping and use of fiddlers). Time to get out to the bridge and try to catch some of these
Like for real. I fish out of St. Augustine Florida and Jax a lot. Literally the second people scrape the sides of the pylons clean around the bridges. Which happens every year. The sheepshead numbers dwindle drastically. Been fishing those areas for years and see what it does year after year.
I like to pull the big claw off if I'm dangling my bait just off the bottom, like from a bridge, because the fish will go for the claw first and cause you to miss your hook set. I toss the claw in before I drop my line, sort of like a micro chum. If I was using this rig on the bottom, I agree with Tony, leave it on, they love that waving claw.
Great video! You were definitely in a tough spot but did as good as you could! Just got back from fort Myers beach and I’d see an old timer very early in the day scraping out of a tiny John boat with a ten horse. He always did well!🎣🌴
Great Videos. Got a scraper in my shed .Rods in my storage room .Need to get off my rear and do a little work on my boat. And go great info. Love your channel Your friend Alabama Smokey Wilson
Will you give some advice to catch sheepshead from jetties or casting from shore to pilings please. I went with my gf yesterday and we had a tough time. No bites. Low tide.
I can never find fiddler crabs once it gets cold. Warm weather months I can find a million of them though. And my local tackle shops don't sell fiddlers.
I use fiddlers all the time. They are NOT water crabs, they breath Air! You'll drown them if submerged in water. They can't dry out either but they pee a lot so most people leave them in a bucket of Cool wet sand for long term storage with drain holes so they don't die in there own piss. If just keeping them for a day, use a small cooler or bait bucket and rinse a few times during the day.
This ruins sheepshead holes. You scrape off all those barnacles where all those crabs and stuff live. The sheepshead have no reason to come back once you scrape all that off. This is so stupid. I’ve literally sat at a bridge pylon and got 100’s of fish. Weeks later others had scraped the entire pylon after seeing me and I couldn’t catch but a few every time I went back to that hole after they did that.
Thanks for your question! Make sure to ask this over on the actual blog or in the Community where the coaches spend their time. The blog can be found here:bit.ly/3rvoTWs
Also people trying to knock those barnacles off in current are literally chumming hundreds of feet away from the bridge by the time thr current let’s the chum hit the bottom.
This destroys sheepshead habitat more than it helps you catch fish. Those fish will hold on that same structure for months if you don’t take away their food source by scraping it into the water.
You’re ruining the hole for everyone so you can catch 2 or 3. And those commercial guys who rely on those fish being there suffer. Someone who’s on the water almost daily to support his family has to work harder bc this kind of bad advice.

do you sell the bottom sweeper jig? Where would I find the barnacle/chumming rules? Curiousa about Sarasota and AMI

I love the idea of using a sand flea rake to catch the barnacles!
Its aluminum and will wear fast tho. We just used cheapest floor scrapers or even a cheap hoe.

They are hard to find in cold weather so good luck on that

Bottom sweepers changed the game for me here in the northeast

Cool vid, Seasons Greetings 👍
Awesome video that's the way it's done great job!
Do I need to keep the crabs in an aerator to keep them overnight? How long will they survive for?

@@scottmichael3745 awesome, thank you
@@NotTodayBud any time.
Just throw some crackers in there and they’ll eat it and stay alive for a while several days

What size is that reel?
I might try a block of chum

I agree 100%
I concur.
Do you need to "bleed out" Sheepshead right after you catch them?

Used to do that and just use the barnacles for sheepy bait. Hard to hook but the ones that break become chum. Lol
OMG I love it!
Awesome fight sequence - too bad he broke off - great tip 👍
biiiig boy on the 1st one haha yeeeeeeew👍
Where is that
If you never fished pylons the fish get big. 70 pounds. I landed a 51inch cobia.
Also people trying to knock those barnacles off in current are literally chumming hundreds of feet away from the bridge by the time thr current let’s the chum hit the bottom.
It's an ice scraper
Unfortunate but my man that wasn't a fight that fished demolished you
ouch!
How can you tell the bite of sheepshead? I have a problem seeing or detecting it.
MR MIDNIGHT he explains around 9:30 mark
@@jefflemaster2850 I didn't see the bite but I miss a lot of the bites.
MR MIDNIGHT I miss a lot too!
@@jefflemaster2850 ok. I don't know how to get better at fishing for them.
They just came out with another video that explains it better.

Yeah, not very environmentally conscious.
Mollusks ***
Tough spot to fish, 85 % chance the fish will run through the bridge fenders. 👍🏻
its illegal in my area
