Lyrics:
If today was not an endless highway
If tonight was not a crooked trail
If tomorrow wasn't such a long time,
Then lonesome would mean nothing to you at all
Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
Yes, and if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin'
Only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again
I can't see my reflection in the waters
I can't speak the sounds that show no pain
I can't hear the echo of my footsteps
Or can't remember the sound of my own name
Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
Yes, and if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin'
Only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again
There's beauty in the silver, singin' river
There's beauty in the sunrise in the sky
But none of these and nothing else can touch the beauty
That I remember in my true love's eyes
Yes, and only if my own true love was waitin'
Yes, and if I could hear her heart a-softly poundin'
Only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again

Somebody like Bob Dylan only appears once in an eternity.
Conor oberst
@@jonsaunders2179 thanks for that. Checking him out. Lol, all I know about "Bright Eyes" is that the guy my first wife cheated on me with liked them...lmao
Yep I wish I could meet him shake his hand and tell him I love his music

hints of 'seven curses' in this song. bob dylan might not be who you think he is.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written, played, and sung... 😍😚☺
Almost 10 years ago, when I was 11 listening this song in the S1 finale of TWD, ahhh the good old days...
Me too. Just watched that episode again and was reminded of it.
Couple more weeks until it’s back 😆
Dude I have been listening to Bob dylan my whole life and I haven't realized it until now
:’)
it's so sad to think that the good characters are all gone
Can not believe this is live. The quality is amazing and the audience is in complete quiet respect. What a song man
Oh for sure, I had the same reaction when I heard the applause at the end~
There was a time not too long ago when audiences were quiet and respectful and didn't have to yell woohoo every 2 seconds and applaud after every line to show everyone they "get it", but mostly to to bring attention to themselves.
@notchjohnson1 Nous sommes tous gay, notch.
@@MrThermostatic There was a time when people bought a ticket and sat and listened and didn't interfere with other people's enjoyment of someone's performance. Now . . .
That was back before some audience members felt the need to shout and be heard.
I've been listening to this for over 30 years now, yet another moment of genius that never found an album. Bob's collected outtakes are better than most artists careers.
Season 1 of The Walking Dead ending with this is such a unique cinematic experience.
Lyrics to this version:

If tomorrow wasn't such a long time
Then lonesome would mean nothing to you at all
Yes and only if my own true love was waitin'
If I could hear her heart a-softly poundin'

I can't see my reflection in the water
I can't speak the sounds that show no pain
I can't hear the echo of my footsteps

And if I could only hear her heart a-softly poundin'
Yes and only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again
There's beauty in that silver singin' river
There's beauty in that rainbow in the sky
But none of these and nothing else can touch the beauty
That I remember in my true love's eyes
Yes and only if my own true love was waitin'
If I could only hear her heart a softly poundin'
Yes and only if she was lyin' by me
Then I'd lie in my bed once again
Gracias por poner los lyrics 😊
My dad played Dylan all my young life. This song makes me feel him around me still. Thanks Bob Dylan. Rest in peace dear old Dad.
The last time I heard this song, I watched the CDC get blown up
Lol same the good old days
same here the good old days
Same here I came from Twd

One of his best songs, and this is coming from a huge Dylan fan.
One of too many*
This is basically Boots of Spanish leather. Which is another bombshell of a song, I’d argue even better than this. The song Sara about his looming divorce with his beloved wife is my favorite. You’re a big girl now, a few songs in blood on the tracks rival his earlier work. He wrote all along the watch tower, a hard rain is gonna fall. I’m a long time Dylan fan and I don’t know that this is his best song, it is really just a subjective thing anyway.
O Western Wind when wilt thou blow
The small rain down can rain
Christ! that my love were in my arms
and I in my bed again.
I have a story about this song,,,,somewhere around 1973. I was in prison in France..Fleury Merogis. I was in for hash and didn't know when I would get out...totally and completely in love with my Danish wife. I had my own cell and spent 22 hours a day alone there with 1 hour in the morning and 1 in the afternoon on the yard. In my cell there was little box that was used to communicate by the screws and also played French radio during the day.....out of nowhere
this song came on the radio and I had my ear up next to it...the worse part of prison for me was I was away from her and I didn't know if I would ever be with her again.....I was completely overwhelmed with sadness and cried .
Been listening to this version of the song for over 40 years. Still gets to me, every time
You must have the 12 " version if its been going on 40 years
Me too.
Have you ever heard Elvis sing it ?
I even play/sing it for over 40 years...
This is one of the most achingly beautiful songs that I’ve ever heard
There is no one like Bob Dylan. There never will be. What an artist.
Why would anyone wanna be like him? Everybody wants to make their own identity not someone's prototype
@@SummerAfternoonsandip I think you missed linuxgirl's point! She was just expressing how unique Bob is and praising him as an artist.
That's a fact
Oh, he is (beyond) amazing, but he (it...) has always been, always will be...
@@SummerAfternoonsandip you are full of crap. Noone like dylan.
oh the nights I’ve spent crying to this song
Hope you're doing well.
Have a wonderful day ❤
Try New Morning.
Yes many
He speaks of tomorrow but it's the next morning I regret waking up to day after day just disappointment at not having died in the night having to endure again and worse yet expected to be grateful for the misfortune of living.
You aren't the only one :( but chin up and don't forget 'Tomorrow is also a new day :)
All the songs are written with deep feeling, you feel it as soon as your songs begin. In history, there can never be another Bob, never.
I'm a huge Dylan fan. I've seen him live twice and there will certainly be one more concert. The best concert of my life was Dylan almost 100% acoustic in Nimes in the Roman Colosseum. I was there with my siblings, my parents and my girlfriend. I've never felt so good. We all sat on the warm stones of the Colosseum. I think that was the last time everything was okay. I know Dylan from my parents and I have a very close relationship with Dylan's songs. My father passed away in July 2022 and my mother in July 2023. February 2024 my girlfriend left me after 20 years of relationship. We have 2 young children...
I don't think I'll ever have such a safe and wonderful feeling again as I did at this concert.
Enjoy every moment with the people around you. Everything is finite and at some point there will be no more!
Kind regards my Friends
"I'm grateful."
"The day will come when you won't be."
this is what i do. get drunk and listen to bob dylan. this one hits hard for me
2020 ......71 and still listening ........there will never be another..........BOB DYLAN !!!!!!!
The perfect love song. I love my wife and I think of her every time I hear this song. We have been married for 49 years.I love Sølvi.
FELICIDADES!!!
He has the gift of hitting the nail on the head. This is such a beautiful song and describes perfectly a place we have all been to at sometime, while using simple language and not using showy words and phrases.
Walking dead man it’s awesome❤
A song of this quality took years to release. Some musicians would be lucky to have written anything close.
The greatest song written about longing, loneliness and love. Could say that about a dozen or more Dylan songs. He is not a mortal.
Noone can strum the heartstrings like Dylan.
This song reaches in, takes out your pain and gives it words
"There's beauty in the silver, singin' river
There's beauty in the rainbow in the sky
But none of these and nothing else can touch the beauty
That I remember in my true love's eyes"
to me these are his best lyrics ever. and he wrote a lot of great lyrics.
and the way he sings them in this version.......
There's something hypnotic about this song. I don't think there's any other artist that can capture the mood of the everyday person like Dylan with his everyday voice. The best songwriter in my opinion.
Something magical happens when you hear Bob performing live in the 60s. The echo of the Hall and the acoustics. The quietness of the crowd, and Bob's voice, guitar and harmonica floating up through the rafters. It tugs at my heart every time.
That harmonica feels like the soul of a ghost, doesn't it?
I know, I have an early cassette tape of him in New York, he’s so innocent and friendly and .....pure. He had no idea of what was to come. Love him for ever!
So true..
Bob said Elvis singing this song of his is the best cover he's ever heard. Elvis was his idol, and when Elvis died Bob says he didn't speak to anyone for a week. 👍
I think this may be his most beautifully written and performed song
One of the most beautiful songs in the world in my humble opinion
I'm here because I'm thinking of who I lost through my own stupidity and what this song meant to us. Now the words mean so much more being in regret than being in love.
It's so soft and gentle, it really makes you pay attention and listen
I love this song and the way you sing it goes straight into my heart ❤️ thank you Bob
Heard this for the first time today ❤
What a beautiful song that tugs on my heartstrings...no one like Bob Dylan...
I love you
Dont think bob dylan realizes how much he truly gets through to people from every walks in life through the stories in his songs....truly amazing man ❤
Masterpiece by Bob Dylan. Flawless writing.
Flawless. Yes.
This is a true gem of a song. It's the sincere emotional confession of the loneliness and deep longing for connection that makes it come so alive in our hearts.
No one writes love songs better or ever will
People look down on shows, movies, tiktok, etc. for being the first place many of us hear music others have enjoyed for years. What does it matter, how we come to music as long as we do? This is how young people fall in love with music from the past and keep it going.
In these uncertain times tommorow is indeed a long time.....
Bob Dylan is a metaphor for a prophet. He is like a myth, a complete mystery but yet such a beautiful thing.
One of the best love songs ever written and sung, only Dylan could sing this one.
Lv
Elvis sang a masterful version.
This song brings a tear to my eye.
One of my favorite songs. My son is named Dylan.
My cat is called Bob my dog is called Dylan.
Dylan like Dylan Thomas? :-P
My brother is named Dylan
My dads best friends mum worked with a girl whose nephew was called Dylan, what are the chances.
big C 73 😂
Bob has so many gems. However, this one is a very special piece of music indeed and stands out for me. And its live, apparently 😅
I lived in a small northern canadian oil town , when i first heard this song and it always made me aware of where i was , its weird it just takes me to desolaion and cold winter landscapes..every time i hear it
The very best writer ever, bar none!
WE ARE MAKIN’ IT OUT OF THE CDC WITH THIS ONE🔥🔥🔥
Bob Dylan is my favorite musician of all time. And just when I thought I've heard all his music I stumble across this and am even more blown away at his song writing ability. Truly unsurpassable. Wish I could meet this man
This was the first time his folks seeing him perform live, they were in the audience. I adore this song🤗♥️
That's an awesome nugget of information. Can I ask how you know that?
I Love this song! The Words he sings are so Beautifully written! When I listen to this song, I also listen to Elvis Presley's version of this song. Both Amazing and Talented men! Will always remain in our Hearts Forever!
Dylan says the Elvis Presley version of this song is the "most precious" recording he owns.
I can see why because Elvis did a awesome version of it.
No
Master piece...... This man held a world in his palm in a time when few knew it.... He chose peace and compassion.... He had real words and real thought....I am thankful for this moment to hear him sing......He is maybe the most important recorded voice JHE857.....
Yes!!!
And what about Lennon and McCartney and a few others were alright. Dylan was all you wrote and more and I like how compassionate you are about him. But you do mean he held the music world in the palm of his hand not the general public.
@Raindeer Projekt Seriously? C'mon, man. Yes, this song is a masterpiece. No, Dylan doesn't deserve the pedestal you or anyone else puts him on. He was a fraud. He took one of the purest forms of music and hijacked it for his own gain. He was a fraud and liar. "The most important recorded voice"? I threw up all over my desk when I read that. What about Woody (whom Dylan tried to copy right down to the tiniest little detail because he had no sense of self) or Seeger, or any number of actual authentic voices that stood for something. Dylan didn't and doesn't stand for anything but capitalism. He did write some great songs while he was fooling everyone, though, I have to give him credit for that.
I only wish I knew the time when people like Dylan were considered heros. I'm sad now...
Excelente y motivador comentario. Gracias

Une des chansons d'amour perdu la plus déchirantre que j'aie jamais entendue !
Thanks
💕💕💕🌹😘
wow its really only 16 lines
There's beauty in your face, how I miss you Montserrat...
It's way more than a great song !
Such a gorgeous intimate performance. I was sure this was a studio recording when I first heard it since it is played in near silence. When the applause started, it really surprised me! He wrote so many tender love songs around this time.. 'Boots of Spanish Leather', 'One too many mornings', 'Girl from the North Country'..
God, how beautiful, I cannot stop listening.
On repeat...
I listen to this when I miss my father and grandfathers..... wish they were a part of my tommorow. I'll honor them till the end❤
I can’t speak the sounds that know no pain.
messiahmoose to show the pain, but meaning is the same
Déchirant
Merci, Bob, d' avoir si bien traduit cette émotion

This lovely and passionate song was recorded "Live" at Town Hall, New York City, New York on April 12,1963.
It was first released as a "B" Side to "If Not For You" in 1970.
Thank you.
This song doesn't feel long enough
and that's the beauty in it..
THE hippest dude on the planet for over 60 years. PERIOD!
That's it I'm staying here all day thank you for all the little treasures today 😊👏
@Esther Ruby don't you just love when that happens 😊👏 have a good day
I can't see my reflection in the water, I can't speak the sounds to show no pain. Masterpiece.
Heaven!. Now I'm happy....
I have listened to Bob Dylan since i a child cos i was born in 55 and listening to this now still does it as a British man we had some great song writers Bob and the Beatles wrote songs from i don't know but I love them
Well said brother of mine,I'll see you on the the otherside
I miss her ⚡️💫🥃❤️
The greatest songwriter and the greatest singer. Elvis version is outstanding.
This reminds me of the old times even though I’ve just heard it, and it does not represent any thing I’ve lived before.
But I still relate to it somehow :)
I hope you all feel good ;)
Bob was asked who does his favorite cover of any of his songs.
He said Elvis’s version of this song.
well you also have to remember to those guys getting big in the 60's Elvis and Chuck Berry were their heroes
Nice, modest guy. Covering a Bob Dylan song just sounds like heresy to me. Unless it's a tribute.
Elvis does do a great version also
Sandy Denny❤️ did a cover of this song, in York (UK) in 1972. I heard it here on yt. But it was deleted.
Bob loves Elvis, he said he did not not speak to anyone for a week when Elvis died.
Definitely one of my favorites. Reminds me of time weaving through life
The genius of this lyric for me is that this is all something he'd do, but there is something currently in the way. I asked my son today what this song feels like. He is 6. His answer is that it feels like you are on the highway on the way to something but it's far away. Man, I love that kid, but I digress...That is exactly what this song is for me. A love that you remember, that you want, but is for some reason so distant at this moment; but there is comfort even in having felt such a thing and the possibility of experiencing it again.
People who think Bob always sang off-key have clearly never heard this masterpiece.
Well he did but that was also part of his charm and uniqueness . He didn’t alwasy hit the notes on key either.
I can't see my reflection in the water
I can't speak the sounds to show no pain
I can't hear the echo of my footsteps
Or remember the sounds of my own name
Such mature lyrics from such a young heart
Vanishing of Sydney Hall brought me here and pushing 40 I cant believe I've never heard this song until now. God is great and Bob Dylan is not far behind. 🙏🏽
“The Vanishing of Sidney Hall” brought me here 💙 it’s a unique thoughtful movie 💜
I have just this moment finished watching it, fantastic film👍👍
big C 73 it is !💜
The song's structure and melody is very similar to Seven Curses, another great early Dylan song.
Dylan is pretty open about his reuse of melodies. Doesn't make it any less magical though.
Yes, but "Seven Curses" doesn't reduce you to a weeping wreck by expressing the anguish of being uncontrollably apart from the one that your very heart beats for.
But "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" is more than a year older than "Seven Curses".
Riley should've never stole that Stallion.
That’s it! Thank you! I’ve always thought this song sounded familiar to another one of his songs and it never dawned on me till reading this comment.
Best love song in the history of mankind. Best singer in the history of mankind. Yes, may parents used to say he couldn't sing. But, as Bob once said, he's at least as good as Caruso. It took a while for people to realize that. I sincerely hope I pass before Bob. I couldn't handle it.
Nice to hear his voice. Such a gifted writer. Love his words.
Decades ago, when Hits Vol II came out, this version of the song stood out so loudly. Phenomenal song, even Elvis took a crack at it.

Thank you for uploading. You're a great artist Bob Dylan, and you mean the world to many.
hard to tear myself away...one after another. Though I have all these albums! Usually I play them in my head when something comes up that makes me think of them.
Am back to where I started maybe this morning. I got this album when it came out. It’s so good. And that beautiful picture. Wow. Or maybe I didn’t get it when it came out. Did my sister? Someone got it and I listened to it an awful lot. I particularly loved Lay Dolly Jay. X
Elvis singing this song nothing can be better or greater.
