Odessa or Odesa (Ukrainian: Оде́са) is the third most populous city of Ukraine and a major tourism center, seaport and transport hub located on the northwestern shore of the Black Sea. It is also the administrative center of the Odessa Raion and Odessa Oblast, as well a multiethnic cultural center. Odessa is sometimes called the "pearl of the Black Sea", the "South Capital" (under the Russian Empire and Soviet Union), and "Southern Palmyra".
Before the Tsarist establishment of Odessa, an ancient Greek settlement existed at its location. A more recent Tatar settlement was also founded at the location by Hacı I Giray, the Khan of Crimea in 1440 that was named after him as Hacibey (or Khadjibey). After a period of Lithuanian Grand Duchy control, Hacibey and surroundings became part of the domain of the Ottomans in 1529 and remained there until the empire's defeat in the Russo-Turkish War of 1792.
In 1794, the city of Odessa was founded by a decree of the Russian empress Catherine the Great. From 1819 to 1858, Odessa was a free port-a porto-franco. During the Soviet period, it was the most important port of trade in the Soviet Union and a Soviet naval base. On 1 January 2000, the Quarantine Pier at Odessa Commercial Sea Port was declared a free port and free economic zone for a period of 25 years..... (wikipedia)

You see, the Ukraine doesn’t have an official appositive like “republic”, “federation”, “kingdom”, “state”, etc., so the word “Ukraine” is used instead of a noun phrase most countries have as their official names. Additionally, the word “Ukraine” comes from Old Russian “oukraina” that means “borderlands”, “outskirts”, etc., so in English its equivalent would be a country called “the Borderlands”. Which is to an extent reflected in Russian and Polish that use the preposition “na”instead of “v/w” to say “IN the Ukraine”.
Odessa has the most beautiful downtown core in Eastern Europe. Combine this with Ukranian flavour and you have the most amazing place I have ever been too. 60 countries and counting here.

@@victorgl.7024 не враньё, там на дома жалко смотреть, сплошь обмоклые, сырые. тем более некоторые из них уже обрушиваются. На них жалко смотреть потому что тупые огромные современные балконы ставят на старинное здание, обсалютно не следя за фасадом здания, а некоторые недокрашивают здание и оно так и останется наполовину старым наполовину фигнёй. Стоит все таки согласиться, что на домах может быть отбелен фасад, чтобы стеклопакеты уродски не смотрелись, но рядом может быть та же сырая заброшенка с деревянными окнами,

I stayed there for 8 Months . It’s one of amazing Cities . In my Opinion one of the best among European Cities . I am sad about what is happening to Ukraine, because I saw the kindness and love of this cheerful people, and I am sure that things will be better than they were.

J'en ai de très bons souvenirs, la ville est magnifique ses habitants sont aimables et agréables. J'aimerais tant qu'elle soit préservée elle et ses habitants!
