Hey Everyone - This video is an overview of how simple/easy things are to setup. This video isn't a guide on a 'budget' setup or a guide on the most 'optimal' setup. As mentioned in the video there are a LOT of different options This is one of them that people can follow that I hope will help out. I have other videos titled "Zwift on a Budget" if you're looking for cheaper options to get spinning indoors.
*And yes, there's a typo in 'computer' on screen. This is what happens when you're editing videos at 1am on a Monday morning.
Shane, Great and timely video. Got my complete setup for Christmas this year and use Zwift for biking and running. I purchased the Runn sensor for my treadmill and it's the most accurate sensor i've used so far. The Apple 4K is the perfect tool and looks good on a big screen Tv. My pain cave has become my sanity cave. Two teenagers and wife at home with me now all day. I get on my bike or go for a run and I'm feeling great. Anyone who needs an exercise outlet should consider what Shane is showing in this video. Shane, also Love your information. Keep up the good work. We need you out here to keep upbeat. Thanks!
I had to like the post less than a minute of watching as I felt Shane knew his stuff... And he really did when I finished watching and put it to the test... Mega kudos 🙌🏾👑
Have this exact setup, I can definitely recommend as the ease of setup and use is fast and simple. Cheers for all your hard work in these times Shane. Your videos got me into Zwift and its certainly paying off now we're all stuck inside :)
For a fan recommendation for anyone I recently just purchased a Vornado 660 off Amazon for $139 - Its a bit pricey, but it blows that wind directly in your face and has a stylish look about it without looking like a giant industrial fan.
Sent this to a buddy who is getting ready for further lockdown in Vancouver.
Thanks for the content
using my tv in my den and a Steam Link unit I bought a few years ago to virtually connect to my gaming pc (located in my beddroom). works great.
I am setting mine up tomorrow can’t wait!
Absolutely, been using atv 4k for a while and have been super happy with it. Very reliable and cheapest way into a great experience.
I had to stop the video to make this comment. Shane makes a beautiful and excellent point. You don’t need to “train” if you don’t want to and calling it a simulator is genius. I have never heard trainers called that but it makes sense. Like how phones now a day are just pocket computers that can make calls. Most of the time I can ride outside because of the weather and just jump on the trainer to ride around, get the legs moving, and clear my head.
Hey Shane, I was looking for a video to expain a simple setup to a friend and this fitted the bill perfectly; so thank you. What a pity that with all of the Zwift improvements and increased users that the Apple TV UI hasn't progressed at all and is still one of the most frustrating experiences that can be had in cycling.
Thanks for the kind words about the video Keith. #RideOn!
I’m currently saving up for my first setup. Looking at the Tacx Vortex and connect to my iPad Pro with a view of getting an Apple TV setup after. My budget doesn’t stretch to a direct drive solution just yet so though I’d get up and running and can always upgrade as and when I have money available.
I'd say with the length of time we are expecting to be indoors, covering your bike from sweat will be ESSENTIAL. Saran wrap is great for keeping your headset and stuff from rotting away.
Thanks, Nice work Shane. I'll be forwarding this on to some co-workers who are housebound!
Awesome video. Really helpful as I want to set zwift up! Great video production too!!
My setup is similar but even simpler. I did get the Kickr Core, which is amazing, put my hardtail MTB on it (kinda limits top speed a bit, but still good for getting a workout). For running the app itself, I am just running it on my phone. The Kickr Core and heart rate monitor just pair up to the phone and the phone is just sitting in a handlebar mount. I might upgrade the setup later on, if I end up putting it in the same room as my gaming PC
Wicked Pissah Cool Video GpLama. Watching from Boston Massachusetts USA 🇺🇸 😁
I’ve been riding the Kickr core for over a year. I just got my wife a Kickr snap, I would argue it’s simpler. Especially since many LBS are currently closed or not offering service.
The SNAP works well. It doesn't report cadence so requires another sensor for that, which then consumes the two BLE connections to the Apple TV... so no HR... and things get complex from there.
@@gplama Shane. Commented earlier as well. I am looking at snap. I currently do cycle and have my heart rate and cadence sensor connected to Garmin fenix 6. Will the fenix 6 act as “ one” Bluetooth connection to apple tv or iPhone and 2nd connection from snap
@@devonhuysamen7286 I'm not quite clear on the setup. If you have a HR monitor, a cadence sensor, and a SNAP, that's three connections required to the AppleTV direct. This configuration won't work. If you were to use the Zwift Companion App to pair everything, it'll work (that accepts more Bluetooth devices). Your Fenix 6 can rebroadcast HR... but if you have a HR monitor just use that for HR data.
Good informative video, thanks. Good luck buying a smart trainer at the moment -they are harder to find than toilet paper
I managed to snag a Kickr Core from my LBS on Sunday, best money I've spent on bike stuff other than my bikes.
switched to an apple tv 4k from my pc with ant+ dongle a few months back, great experience, simple, improved graphics, no issues so far!
I did consider the ATV but happy enough with my laptop ( 1 year old, nothing spectacular but reliable enough). Is the ATV noticeably better or was the pc you were using a bit older?
Great video!! I think I win for the most primitive (and cheap) set-up. I have a 1978 10-speed Raleigh SuperCourse on a "dumb" Kinetic fluid trainer made "smart enough" by adding their inRide 3 Power Sensor accessory. Since finances are tight, I'm taking advantage of the generosity of RGT Cycling and using their premium service for free. Kudos to RGT! One area I have not skimped on is I am using the 4K Apple TV. It has much more robus hardware than the previous non-4K version and the graphics are far superior to that earlier version (I have the earlier version. It works, but the graphics are quite underwhelming). Crank on!!!
Hi i have the Elite crano non smart trainer. Any advice on what i need to make it a smart trainer?
Great video Shane , I,m 68 and not very tec savy , so I appreciate the straight forward basic info. Am I correct that it is possible to use an android phone as a controller for swift on apple tv with an app of some sort?
Yes, you can use an Android phone with the Zwift Companion App to control Zwift on an Apple TV.
Great video 🫶🍀.. Id their a further video going in to detail of what’s next please?! tk you 🍀
Shane! T U so much!!! Very precise info to get me started!!!
You're welcome Kevin! Thanks for dropping by and leaving this comment.
Great work, Shane! Ride on!
Nice setup but to me if you are just starting a Kickr snap with PC and companion app will get you going so you only need to buy a trainer. No cassette or not need for apple TV...we will assume you have a bike
got this exact same set-up a week ago!
Running a 7-speed cassette on my kicker core is not a problem. A 35-year-old bike works fine. Zwift doesn't know that I'm not aerodynamic :-)
My trainer bike is a cheap-ish hardtail MTB with 2x8 drivetrain, does the job, though the top speed isn't great due to my fastest gear being 11/36. At least with the 8 speed cassette, they are cheap and easy to find, 11-34 Shimano HG cassettes are cheap as chips these days.
1 correction ... XD driver isn't needed for 12 speed IF you want to run the Sram NX 11-50 cassette IF you have a long cage rear derailleur. This is definitely a very "edge" case in our community. Not many 12s 1x setups on smart trainers. I'm a bike packer and my setup has been 1x from the start so the move to a 12s "Mullet" setup wasn't a hard pill for me to swallow other than the AXS price tag.
This is bound to get 100,000+ views...
If 100,000 people could buy an AppleTV4K from the Amazon link in the description I'll be happy :)
hi mate nice jobe, i enjoy so much your video, just a question: i have a pc what i need to connect the smart trainer to the pc (is ok to have just one usb-key/blutooth? thx for your reponse
Bluetooth is fine as long as you’re on the latest Windows 10 with updates installed.
Thanks for your tips! So just to be clear. All I need is a Wahoo kicker, a apple 4k TV box and ANY Smart TV!??
No laptop or gaming PC needed???
Correct
@@gplama Great, appreciate it! I'm going to get this same setup
Hi Shane, Thank you for the video. I can't figure oout how to setup for my husband and I together? Any idea... Thank you again.
I'm not sure what you mean by together? To ride at the same time you'll both need independent setups.... so 2x what you see here.
I'm 4 yrs behind , got on Zwift in Dec 2023 , got a Garmin NEO2T and today I got 2021 Apple TV 4K 64GB - Black (2nd generation) (Renewed Premium)
2021 Apple TV 4K 64GB - Black (2nd generation) is this good enough ?
Quality video thanks
Zwift & Apple TV perfect as I don't have a great PC. I'm new to this & don't want & have the cash to justify a direct drive trainer so how can I get Zwift & Apple TV setup with a cheap turbo be it magnetic or fluid
This will help: ua-cam.com/video/mHVnxxWJA9s/v-deo.html Just replace the iPhone/IOS with AppleTV/tvOS and you're set.
Hi Shawn, I am long time follower of your videos and really awesome cycling hacks/ recommendations. I was wondering if you can confirm that only a Shimano cassette is missing as you said and what else (?) the centerlock nut. The throughaxle from the bike can or must be used to fix the wheel? Or us there anything Whahoo is delivering? Finally, I have an AppleTV 4 with BlueTooth but just HD but not 4K. Dies this works and is good enough? Thanks in advance. Ralf, Germany, 23 March 20
The cassette will come with a lockring that will fit onto the CORE. The thru-axle from the bike is to be used with the trainer if you have a TA bike. The GEN 4 AppleTV (not the 4K) will work with Zwift but at a much lower frame rate.
@@gplama Great, thank you! Stay heathy!
Question: If I have a 14-28 cassette on my bike, should I buy a cassette with same gear ratio for my smart trainer, or can I buy an 11-25 cassette? And if I do this, will I have to fine tune the derailleur or will it be good to go straight away? Many thanks.
That should work fine. It’s not too different. The indexing should remain the same.
@@gplama thank you. Keep up the good work
Shane, similar question I run 11-30 with my di2, if I was to fit an 11-28 cassette to the trainer. Would that cause any shifting issues in the bike...any gearing issues...I am not very good with the Di2 set ups...thanks in advance
@@jovelh2812 That'll be fine.
Hi Shane, how does the setup change if not an apple user and if choosing kickr snap?
Hi Shane, I just bought a Kickr Snap V2 and 4th Gen Apple TV. If I connect my trainer to Zwift, do I also need to add a cadence sensor? I've connected my speed and cadence sensors to the trainer via the wahoo app. Thanks
I thought Apple TV could only take 2 concurrent Bluetooth connections. Did Apple change that? Thank you!
The Kickr CORE (and a few other trainers) will use ONE Bluetooth connection for all the data it sends. Meaning Power, Control, Cadence = 1 connection, and the heart rate monitor = 1.
@@gplama Right that makes sense! My Wahoo KICKR 2018 does the same.
How wd u then link HR if remote takes one connection
@@1000rambo ATV has three Bluetooth device connections. The remote = 1, leaving two.
@@gplama I'll try again tomorrow eve/this eve thanks Shane, AllI could connect was Tacx Flux S and apple TV 4k remote
Hello Shane thanks, some questions, sorry for adding complexity to your super simple video comments, I'm about to buy a smart trainer, I think I'll be using it more with Sram Red AXS 12sp Etap, but I also have Shimano 10 and 11spd, should I go for the AXS 12spd setup and if someday I want to plug the other bikes, is it possible? Also, what do you think works best for that setup, TACX or Wahoo?... We ride a lot of steep hills in México City, so I value a good gradient % allowance. Thanks a lot. Cheers!
Apologies if this has been asked before (and I'm sure it has) but....I've gone the whole hog and bought 4K ATV, 50" screen, hooked up the wife's Wattbike ATOM and I'm loving it! However, I've got a Garmin HR strap (ANT+) that I run with my Fenix 3. How do I hook that up with the Swift app? I tried an ANT+ dongle plugged into the tablet I run the Companion App on but got no recognition of the HRM. I've heard tell of using the Companion App as a 'bridge' for ANT+ devices but that leaves me none the wiser, I'm afraid.
Shane...this is all your fault! I watched a couple of your videos, sub'd and now I'm hooked...even though I'm a video games denier!
Excellent work. And apologies for the costs incurred. ;) As for that Garmin HR..... it's time to retire it and get a dual ANT+/BLE one. Garmin make them. There's also the Wahoo Tickr range and Polar also do dual ANT+/BLE straps now too. There are ANT+ to BLE converters but they'll set you back about the same price as a new HR that'll solve the problem outright.
@@gplama Thanks for the prompt response. I had rather thought that that might be the way to go. I can just about persuade myself that the Garmin strap is tatty enough to need replacing...I'm sure the elastic isn't as stretchy as it once was! (I've actually lost 5Kg so it isn't my fault!). New strap it is then! Keep up the good work.
Hi Shane, thanks for putting this up. What if you don't have Apple TV? Can Zwift (and other platforms) go straight into a MacBook Pro?
Yep
@@gplama thanks!
Hi Shane I've just set up our theatre room with two TV sets and two Apple 4K TV's. First couple of times we've used the set up (wife and I) its worked fine. However today I had trouble with the number of Bluetooth devices. Previously I haven't had to use the Companion App to pair anything. I am assuming that our current trainers our sending power/cadence etc on one channel and our HR is on the other, remote on the 3rd. Is there a way of locking in a paired device. Or do we just have to turn on one set up at a time.
Shane, I thought Apple TV take only 2 sensors. Then how do you get power, cadence and HR?
The ATV is limited to BLE 'devices' not sensors. The CORE sends everything over one device channel, the HR is another, and the remote is the 3rd.
Shane Miller - GPLama , Thank you very much. I reinstalled Zwift and now it’s working . Wahoo power and cadence, HR all working. Though the cadence reading feels not so accurate, but I can live with that. Thanks
Hi! I have the Kickr Snap and have recently purchased an Apple TV. Setup was easy and it works well - so much faster and easier than bringing in and hooking up my laptop each time! Thanks for the recommendation about the Apple TV! I have one question though and that is whether it is still possible to perform a spindown while in Zwift. I no longer have keyboard/mouse access while riding and couldn't figure anything out on the Companion app. I thought about getting a bluetooth keyboard, but the ones I have found that look like they should work with the Apple TV are more expensive than the Apple TV was... How do you perform a spindown with the Apple TV? Thank you!
If the calibration/spindown option isn't there for the SNAP then the only alternative is to use the Wahoo Fitness app to do this prior to the ATV connecting to the SNAP via Bluetooth. Best ping Zwift Support on this to see where they're at with allowing spindowns within ATV to this trainer. Zwift on ATV doesn't support any keyboard commands.
@@gplama Thank you so much! That's exactly what I needed to know. I'll send a note to Zwift and ask.
Good one Shane. I recently switched to similar setup with Apple 4k and elite direto. Just one caveat, apple tv can only take the Bluetooth inputs, of which one is allocated to the remote. Given one is HR, for the newbies, ensure your trainer has integrated cadence. Some of the non direct drive trainers don't have this., ie wahoo snap on. Ultimately, it's worth spending extra on the trainer. Ride on.
Correction.... Meant apple tv has only three Bluetooth channels,
Yep, covered in my other videos (in all that extra detail). With this setup it’s all straight to the ATV with no messing about.
To further simplify the setup, check to see if your phone/tablet is supported by Zwift (a lot of the new Andoird/IOS devices are). Want a bigger screen? Simply cast your mobile device to a larger TV using Google Chromecast. This setup also allows for some creativity when it comes to location. You can spin in the Garage/Shed/Balcony/Deck etc. to keep things exciting.
Hey Shane - any reason to go for the 4K Apple TV over the non-4K latest version? Hoping moving the old one in the garage will justify a new 4K for in the house... cheers
The previous non 4K version has a much lower spec, so results in lower frame rates. For the price of these things it’s always best to get the latest version to future proof the purchase a little more too.
Hi there, This weekend I went cycling on the Zwift and I felt that the RPM was not keeping up with the watts it was much less, I did the reset but nothing, and l disconnected everything and tried to connect again, and the Smart Control stopped working fully on the Zwift, what do you recommend? thanks
I have a 2016 KICKR with a new 4k Apple TV but my pairing will not pickup the trainer for cadence it keeps picking my wahoo tickr for cadence but doesn’t measure it correctly it only goes up to 65rpm with the wahoo tickr
I just purchased the AppleTV 4k, a new 32″Samsung 1080 TV and have been using a Tacx Neo2 Smart trainer along with the Zwift Companion App on my Mac up until now. All apps are up to date. The issue is that the Zwift option is not showing once I select AppleTV on my screen. I’ve paired my phone and TV and they are both signed onto the same wifi network. Any suggestions?
I have a wahoo kickr, Swift and apple tv.
How Do i Set the Trainer to erg mode?
Or sim mode? Whats better🙈
Thanks Shane. Can you clarify a dumb question does the Apple TV little box need an Apple TV screen? Or can you use any monitor?
David Anton I use it with a Philips tv bought from eBay. It’s fine on any screen with an hdmi socket
It is worth checking out if Apple has a refurb site in your country. You can save a bit of cash. £30 cheaper in the UK. Would the 64GB be worth it if you’re using FulGaz to download the videos?
Good question re: FulGaz. I assume 64GB might be better there... but if it's all streamed then it's not a worry.
Shane Miller - GPLama If only the Internet wasn’t a tad busy at the moment :) I’ve just built a new summerhouse. I’m hoping the extra Eero access point out there will help. Great video. I think you idea of simpler videos for the new indoor cyclist is a great idea.
Hi, best way to connect samsung tablet to tv?
Shane
Great video thank you for posting it.
A quick question as I’m not too familiar with Apple TV
Is there a subscription needed to use the Apple TV aside from just using it as a streaming device?
Looking to get one of the Kickr s soon also trying to decide If the core is the choice or the new Kickr.
Thank you
The AppleTV hardware does not require a subscription. It's a once-off purchase and from there you just use your AppleID to log in and use it. AppleTV+ is their streaming service which does have a monthly fee. AppleTV+ is NOT required for Zwift.
@@gplama Shane thank you for the quick response!!
What are your thoughts on the Kickr vs the core?
Is the Kickr worth the extra cash?
Looking forward to getting on one soon
If you need to level the feet and you’re a larger/strong rider I’d lean towards the Kickr. The CORE is still a very good option (it’s effectively a Kickr 17 that’s quiet and with proper thru axle support)
@@gplama Thank
You!!
Do the newer Cores have cadence added to them now?
@@alanmahler277 All CORE trainers now have cadence with the latest firmware installed.
If I go this way and buy an Apple TV 4K and new TV will I have to have TV cable access?
TV cable access? I don't quite follow. The ATV can plug into any of the HDMI ports on the TV. Your TV antenna will plug into the TV as normal, or into another HDMI port if you have a cable box of some kind.
What is the blue spanner for and when do you use it. I have a Kickr 18.
Spindown. Used to ensure your trainer is reporting accurate power data.
Looking to upgrade to Apple TV, have the same trainer as featured. I will be using my wahoo for everything ie cadence etc do these all count as 1 Bluetooth connection? I'm worried that once I get a Bluetooth HRM I won't have enough connections available
The Core is one connection, leaving one for the HR.
Hi Shane, hope you well. Thanks for all your advice, i now have an overload of smart trainer information and i seem to be at a Roadblock between 3 trainers - Kickr Core/Tacx Flux S/Tacx Flux 2. I know a lot of reviews have been done on the Wahoo Kickr products but not as much on the Tacx units (which have only been sold in my country since Feb 2020) and i am starting to think that its due to a more aggressive marketing approach from Wahoo relative to Tacx who only recently got purchased by Garmin. Based on this and other opinions i am leaning towards the Tacx Flux S but maybe you could potentially convince me otherwise towards one of the other two trainers other than the +- 3% data accuracy is there any other reason you would not recommend the Tacx Flux S - i also watched your Alpe de Zwift challenge you did on the Tacx Flux S and that was pretty much the selling point as to why i am considering the Tacx Flux S due to the robustness of the unit
CORE over any Flux unit.
@@gplama appreciate the respones! Looking forward to getting into the virtual world
Dear Mr Lama sir. I've not got a smart trainer at the moment, however with a bit of luck (hoping there is not a total shutdown in the UK) then I should be very fortunate to get a long awaited Kickr bike on Saturday. I have a question on which power setting is best to use. Is it better to do the 3 second average power or instant power (to be clear that's specifically about the setting on Zwift) I've tended to use instant power because if you do a 10 second sprint it's hard to gauge with smoothing on. Anyway do you have any advise on that please?
Instant or 3s is only a visual setting. It has no impact on in-game speed/watts. 10 second sprints should be all out, if you're looking at watts and pacing them, they're not all out. GO HARD! :)
How do you turn off the wahoo smart trainer? Been unplugging it from wall outlet? Is there another way.
Thanks
No need.
Is it safe for the bike, to leave the bike on the trainer all year long?
Thanks
I can’t see any problem with this.
Am confused by this. If I by a TV with Apple TV onboard, do I need that separate box/remote?
Oh never mind. I see below the answer is that onboard Apple TV isn't the same and wont run cycling apps (and probably doesn't have bluetooth, either).
The TV or monitor? you used and how it was connected to Apple TV (which is not a TV) not discussed. If you get a TV that has apple air play do you need Apple TV?. That would actually be three items and simpler?.
You need the AppleTV device. The AppleTV App on smart TVs won’t run Zwift.
@@gplama hi Shane, thanks for your response. These details are very helpful in learning what works. john
Might be a stupid question but I couldn't find anything using Google. Is it possible to run two Zwift sessions (with two screens) on a single Apple TV? e.g. if my wife and I both used it at the same time, to have separate monitors but only one Apple TV to power it?
Not possible.
Great work. This helped me a lot.
Question:
Do you know if there would be inference or challenges having 2 Apple TV 4K in the house (they would be in separate rooms, but share a neighboring wall)?
My trainer is planning to be set-up in the garage and interested in connecting it via Apple TV to run Zwift platform.
Thank you for your help!
No issues with this.
Thank you so much!
Is there any data on how many kilometres/miles a smarttrainer should last?
None I’ve ever seen. It’s depend on use, upkeep, and the environment it’s used in.
@@gplama Could you do a video on how to do trainer maintenance? I have Kickr Core and I can't find any info on how to keep it fresh!
@@raptor7547 There's nothing much needed. Keep the firmware updated, clean/grease the freehub, that's about it.
@@gplama Maybe you could consider doing a maintenance series on indoor trainers. If you do, plz start with the Direto ;)
has anyone noticed that the in ride jerseys such as sprint and KOM do not show up next to your name on the right on the Apple TV version. Got a KOM yesterday and it didn’t show, although my riding friends could see it, and won a sprint today, top of leader board, confirmed after ride in zwift companion, but the jersey did not show up next to my name on the right in game?
Hi Shane,
I see there has been a number of comments regarding maximum number of Bluetooth connections using Apple TV. However, could you confirm the following setup will work ok for me please before I take the plunge and purchase an upgraded ATV?
Kickr 1st Gen controlled by Assimoa Duo using Power and Cadence + Tickr Bluetooth HR
Thanks
P.
ATV has a 'device' limit. The CORE = 1, HR = 1, Remote = 1. With the 1st Gen Kickr you won't get cadence so you'll have to choose Cadence or HR as one of the directly connected devices. If you're running the Zwift Companion App you can connect more devices via that and 'bridge' those over WiFi. For that setup I'd connect the Assioma (POWER) and Kickr (Controllable Trainer) direct to the ATV. Then connect HR and Cadence via the Companion App. There are alternatives such as the 4iiii Viiiiva HR strap and NPE Cable devices as alternate ways to bundle multiple sensors into one device connection.
Hi Shane - my summer bike is 11-28 Shimano, so will be putting the same cassette on the Kickr. Winter bike is 11 speed 11-32. From your experience will this be problematic if I jump on the winter bike with gear changes?
Like the idea of being able to use either or but won’t be changing to 11-28 on the winter bike.
If they're the same 'speed' that's ok. Just don't put a 32 cassette on a bike with a RD that only supports 28. Going the other way is ok.
Hi Shane, I’ve just bought a Kikr Core, but I don’t really want Zwift, and setting up a big monitor is hard because I’m space constrained., I just want to be able to select from different pre-set workouts, and ideally from an iOS app from the phone mounted on the handlebars with a quad-lock - just like the Bike I used to use at the gym (when gyms were a thing). Is there any simple non-subscription self-contained app that will run me through a workout, just using my iPhone?
TrainerRoad sounds exactly like what you want... although it's subscription based. I'm not sure there's any good mobile apps that do anything similar for free.
To clarify, are we 100% confident a 12 speed eagle cassette is compatible with the kickr core? My NX eagle cassette rubs on the shroud of my H2 trainer
The CORE supports the XDR driver. It’ll also take a splined NX/SX 10-50 if you’re running a suitable derailleur. That’s the official spec. As for if it works or not..... one for Wahoo to confirm.
Does Zwift work on the first generation atv HD (A1625) or do you need the later model (A1842)?
It’ll work on the ATV HD. The ATV 4K runs it a lot better (even at 1080 resolution).
Ive got the latest gen Apple TV 4k. When running Zwift however my avatar doesn't have the rider and bike silhouette, just some foggy shadow. Is this because the processor in the 4k Apple TV limited? I thought it was pretty gutsy. FYI, its paired to a Kickr Snap
The shadowing is something they've limited on the Apple TV to save resources/processing. If you side-by-side it with the previous ATV you'll see how much better the ATV4K is. Neither compare to a $$$ PC with a new Nvidia GPU for full detail.
@@gplama Ah ok cool. Have no need for a higher end PC and to be honest I only bought the ATV4K just for Zwift ... seemed decent bang for buck in my opinion and still runs super smooth. Thanks for the reply, I hope you get those Meilenstein's soon too :)
Can you use a apple tv onto a pc monitor with hdmi?
Yes
Hi Shane. I am finally getting a direct belt trainer (Zumo Interactive). I have a Stages power meter and an Apple TV (2nd version, 4k I think). I do Zwift races (cat B) or group rides and sometimes workouts, like 30/15s. What is your advise regarding running power from the Stages or trainer? Will there really be enough of a difference between the two to even worry about it? Also, would it be possible to connect HR, external power and a trainer to an Apple TV (4k) through Bluetooth at the same time (I have had problems with this in the past)? Thanks in advance. Carl
Power from the trainer is typically more responsive for ERG resistance changes. Your mileage may vary. Accuracy wise....it should be close. Should be.... If you run out of Bluetooth connections then the Zwift Companion App can act as a bridge to connect more than 2 devices to the ATV. There's other solutions that also work such as the Viiiiva HR strap and NPE Cable. I've covered both here on UA-cam if you want to search those up.
@@gplama Great. Thanks for the reply. Getting the new trainer today :)
To any PC-GAMER or otherwise techsavvy person with a computer; there's a cheaper option!
Buy one raspberry pi, latte panda or whatever tiny single board computer you find with a RJ45 plug and atleast one USB connector.
load it up with steam link (instructions on youtube)
run steam on your computer and enable "in home streaming"
plug your Single board computer into your monitor of choice for working out using a HDMI cable.
Now you can run zwift on a separate location.
For 1080p 60fps i would suggest running a network cable from your computer to your router, then to your SBC as this will ensure that you will have a crisp and delay free image.
This setup cost 1/5th of what an apple TV that is compatible with zwift, because you're not relying on the SBC to run it, rather a computer you allready have in your home.
Optionally you can run it from your phone for even cheaper and easier installation if you have USB-C on it, just buy a hdmi adaptor.
Don't pay the apple tax if you can avoid it.
And as Shane says, this video is here to show how easy it can be.
does the kikr core now provide cadence? or do you ned to purchase that externally?
With a recent firmware update it now transmits cadence. And is pretty accurate too.
Shane, why my apple tv Gen5 cannot detect my heart rate or no heart rate. I use Direto X. Thanks
The DiretoX will transmit Power/Cadence/Control all over one Bluetooth connection, so that's good there. As for the HR monitor - That needs to be Bluetooth and not connected to anything else at the time.
With a zwift subscription do you have to activate Apple TV and pay its monthly subscription cost also to have it run zwift?
No. There's no requirement to have an active Apple TV+ subscription to run Zwift on the Apple TV hardware.
Shane Miller - GPLama thank you for the quick reply.
Is it possible to run Zwift on the Apple TV and the companion app on an iPad or is a smartphone required?
Yep, this will work.
@@gplama Thanks! You channel is such a great resource--a gem for cyclists for all levels!
Hey would a 4th gen work just as well
Yes.
I am on my second smart trainer, an Elite Suito (previously had an Elite Rampa). Both of them transmit all required data via Bluetooth but there is the same issue with resistance on both. Basically resistance at all speeds is noticeably lower than on an ANT+ connection which means to do 300+ watts on the flat you have to be in in 52/11 and forget about sprinting. There's no issues in ERG mode, so I can do workouts on the Smartphone via Bluetooth but for races or hard free rides I have to use the Laptop and an ANT+ stick. Is that just an Elite issue or something that happens on other trainers via Bluetooth as well?
That doesn’t sound right.
@@gplama no, it doesn't :) But it's an issue I have experienced on both my Elite trainers on both Android and iOS devices...so my assumption was it had something to do with Elite's Bluetooth "data transmission"...but admittedly I have not the slightest clue what the problem really is....
Any disadvantage to using “normal” ATV rather than a 4K if you’re not using a 4K monitor / TV?
Frame rate.
Shane Miller - GPLama Upgrade needed for next winter 👍🏻
Shane Miller - GPLama Got a good deal on an ATV 4K & decided to go for it as I’m riding a bit more indoors at the minute for obvious reasons........ the difference even with my poor eyesight is outstanding. The ATV 4K is unbeatable for the price.
A detailed technical question (sorry for posting here - no idea where to put it): In Tacx App one can create a custome bike profile with number of parameters (like: Projected frontal surface, Air resistance coefficient). Did you ever try that? Or do you know where to take the data from to make the setup as close to specific bike/riding position as possible? Google gave me nothing useful so far. You're the last hope :) Cheers!
I haven't used that option a lot at all. Under the hood our smart trainers are a LOT smarter than what they're being used for. The issue is equalisation across different hardware with the same platform (ie. Zwift). If you simulated frontal area or wind, etc, on one trainer it has to apply to all riders.
Any suggestion for a fan?
Any directional 'vornado' style fan is good.
Hi, Did you say that you can chat via the companion app?
Yes
@@gplama As in voice chat rather than using discord or similar?
@@simonandrachelperchard5779 No voice chat in Zwift (or their Companion App)
I don't have anything Apple all android, I have the zwift hub one and I'm running zwift on my Google pixel tablet. But I'm experiencing a lot of power dropouts or avatar just stop in the middle of a ride whether I'm connected by Bluetooth or Ant+. What can I do to stop these dropouts? It's really annoying 😢😢. Any suggestions!!!! Please and thank you.
One for Zwift support. They'll have access to your account/logs/etc and are in the best position to assist.
My disc brake bikes have quick release skewers
Time for a new bike! :)
Every time I try to enter the password to login, it closes that screen. No clue how resolve this.
Can you split screen on aplle tv? For example half screen zwift half screen netflix
Not that I'm aware. Or my ATV ninja skills are lacking and I can't figure it out.
All well just an excuse to buy an extra tv lol
Will a 2nd or 3rd gen apple tv work (1080p)?
4th Gen (HD) and 5th Gen (4K) only I believe. Don’t bother with anything other than 5th Gen. The 32gb version is fine.
@@gplama Thanks Shane! Found 5th gen on swappa and ebay for $139 US
is there a way to prevent/block ‘ride-ons’ in zwift?
No, there’s not. It’d be nice to have a ‘ghost ride’ mode for such things.
foundfoundfound just turn sound right off, and music right up!
is TV and Core a basic setup? ;-)
no hes already covered that in another video.
So I need an Apple TV box to do my zwift riding on my smart TV ....????
Yes.
Its connected with strava?
It can be, yes.
Anyone else had trouble with Apple TV and Tacx flux (original)? Sim mode not working on mine despite all updates etc. :(
I use samsug dex hmdi note 10
