    Because the scales inflicted bleeding, I made the assumption that seregios used the obviously very sharp scales to shred the webbing of the rath’s wings as a hunting strategy

      Possible, but Rath’s are also larger, stronger, and heavily armored, and shown with azure Rathalos, their tail has no problem battering a Seregios away and on their back.

    It might be worth noting that Seregios's extended legs are more than a meter longer than that of Rathalos and Rathian, and its claws (the largest of which are at the front of the foot) are over 60% longer and ~4x the size by volume. Something that wasn't mentioned was that with the zygodactyl feet and the pulling action of its kicks, the number of claws coming into contact and raking is reduced from 3 to 2 (or perhaps 1, given one is larger than the other), increasing pressure and the effectiveness of the slash. It's definitely designed to inflict far more massive injuries with its claws than Rathalos is, which most likely relies on its poison as far as its claws are concerned, and I hesitate to agree that it's designed to bring down smaller prey. It certainly *could* and might have its roots in that morphology, but it's armed with some heavy duty stuff. The Master of Defense does note specifically that Seregios are so territorial that they kill each other in fights over territory, which is why they have a low population, and why it's strange they're out of their normal territory range to begin with, so they should be adapted to fight to the death with similar sized wyverns, with the strongest sending down their genes.
    (I keep trying to link an image of Rathalos and Seregios claws next to each other in blender, but having a link keeps causing youtube to eat my comments. I'd be happy to share them if I can arrange to do so otherwise)
    Seregios's jaw also appears to be heavier, and its face more heavily armored. It's jawline appears to be lined with heavy scales meant to aid it's bite, whereas Rathalos relies solely on its teeth.
    Seregios's wings are far smaller than that of Rathalos, and presumably Seregios is not really well equipped for long distance flight, hence why they're known to be limited to a specific range, whereas Rathalos are known to range seemingly the entire planet. Their shorter wings are likely more useful for quick movements and sudden accelerations, however, and Seregios certainly excels at such.
    A Seregios's horn is bladed, with a sharp point, and can retract flat against the head. I struggle to think of any particular use for it beyond combat, as it's far too lethally designed; like a rhino horn on crack, and one which the Seregios only reveals when angered and in combat. There's also just a general trend of traits evolving in large monsters seemingly just as a means of combating with other large monsters, as it's the most significant evolutionary stressor most monsters seem to have in such lucrative ecosystems. A Rathalos's tail, for instance, serves essentially no purpose beyond bashing and smashing rivals.

    • @unnaturalhistorychannel
      @unnaturalhistorychannel  2 роки тому +63

      Zygodactyl feet typically are designed for smaller prey, but it doesn't necessarily mean animals with them are limited to them. Eagle owls kill kill small ungulates and foxes similar to or greater than their own mass, but even these very powerful owls typically subsist on lagomorphs. So Seregios may be similar in that whilst their weapons allow for larger prey to be taken on occasion, their typical prey is often smaller than themselves.
      I find the statement about seregios being lethally territorial a little odd too, as clearly the whole flock was together when the apex individual displaced them - hardly seems typically of such a seemingly aggressive individual.
      Here's a link to my discord too, you'd be very welcome to share your thoughts there : discord.gg/npRUeE9T

      Seregios are not that big why should they hunt large prey and get themselves in danger ? That's not how nature works. Small prey is more than enough to feed them and far less dangerous. The claws and the horn are used to hunt smaller prey but also help them defend themselves and fight against rivals. It is more than clear that they don't hunt large prey and only fight against them.

    2:10 seeing a Seregios in the Desert was apparently unusual, but we do fight one in Everwood later. Weirdly in a desert based Zone. Furthermore a Cutszene implies, he life's in dense Forrests of the Everwood, choosing similar Habitats like Parrots, or maybe Owls.

  • @pokegirl302
    @pokegirl302 2 роки тому +13

    Seregios likely comes from a desert environment with lots of large rock formations. The short wings that gets utilized for ground movement indicates an environment where long distance flight wasn't necessary and having xygodacyle feet would make climbing easier. I can imagine if they were introduced to a forest biome they would take a niche similar to a hawk while the Rath wyvern would be pushed out into a more eagle like niche.

    I know this is a bit of the older video but I've just been diving into all of your MHEcology videos and loving them! In terms of one of the reasons for the quill's evolution might very well be intraspecies conflict rather than interspecies. As you stated, the scales have been shown to shatter off, get lodged in the attacker's body parts, and causes bleeding/wounds/infection. Given that the Seregios' main form of prey acquisition and combat prowess comes from it's powerful feet, it's safe to say that any conflicts between two members of the species would also utilize these powerful legs to settle disputes. Looking at the Rathian/Seregios fight footage, the Seregios is shown attacking the base of the neck and top of the back of the Rathian in order to pester it away. Assumedly, Seregios would have a similar intraspecies combat strategy for any members that have decided to cannibalize another Seregios' nest or try to drive it out to claim a prime nesting location. The location and placement of the quills would defend against an attack in this style, driving bleed inducing quills into the feet of the attacking Seregios. Most likely, the risk vs reward of this attack wouldn't make it worth for the aggressor, due to an wounded/infected foot being less useful in hunting/general mobility, dissuading the attack just with the presence of the quills in general.
    Again, I know these are getting about a year old at this point, and I'm not sure if you still check around, but I'd love some input!

    • @unnaturalhistorychannel
      @unnaturalhistorychannel  2 роки тому +5

      An interesting idea I quite overlooked. Quills and spines are typically anti predator adaptations, but if seregios cannibalise each other with any regularity then it makes sense for them to protect against their own kind.

    I really like these videos, as someone studying Zoology and a big fan of monster hunter, they're really interesting. I'd love to see a video on Nargacuga in the future, since it's pretty unique in morphology from other wyverns, especially its tail (and the beak + wingblades)

    • @unnaturalhistorychannel
      @unnaturalhistorychannel  3 роки тому +2

      I also wonder as well if he's viewed as 'just another' flying wyvern too, which is quite unfair.
      Thanks as well! Nargacuga will likely be getting his own video in the future, just waiting for the Iceborne art book to be released before I start that set.

    Hey guys, guess who got into Sunbreak! Also, I was thinking about it, but I believe it is also stated that when a Seregios launches its blade scales, it can do so with immense force and accuracy, so maybe this is one of its means of consuming otherwise venomous prey like genprey and cephalos. I also remember learning that Seregios use their scales to mark territory by leaving them embedded all over the place.

      Not sure about Seregios, but the Raths use their chin spikes to help them gather materials for or smooth out small corners of their nest that they can’t reach with their talons without smashing the entire nest. This was confirmed in the MHW: Official Complete Works.

Africa (Sekumea Desert), Europe (Minegarde), Norway and Sweden (Akura Region), Asia, India (Latio Volcano), The Korean Paninsula, and even Australia (Aya) can be seen here. It's also been my personal theory they were a bit part of the dinosaur extinction and why only such small animal survived. Imagine the apocalypse of shreakers eating all the dead and dying animals after the impact like huge heard of saurapods. That might exsplain why they are found around the world as well. It's another theory of mine as to why the African species dosnt have the shreaker form is because of Africa's immense heat makeing them practically being and so many coordinated pack hunters.
