My favorite thing about this episode is how Rebecca sugar made sure that this episode can’t be censored. She made ruby wear the dress so other countries can’t make her a man, and made the diamonds attack in this episode so skipping it would ruin the flow of the plot.
In most international dubs of Steven Universe, they made Ruby and Sapphire have a boy and girl voice respectively, so the crew made sure that Ruby was the one in the dress so that the LGBTQ+ rep is still there

this is taken from the artbook Steven Universe - End of an Era, and it was said by rebecca sugar (no spoilers here, don't worry) This wedding story took years to become a reality. Initially, when we introduced Ruby and Sapphire in "Jail Break" [S1E49], we were told they could not be in a romantic relationship. I was told by Cartoon Network's Standards and Practices that they could not kiss on the mouth. When I was asked internally by my executive at the time if they were e couple, I said absolutely yes-of course-they sing an entire song about how they're in love! I wanted them to be an absolutely iconic cartoon couple, the queer, interracial, gender-expansive answer to Mickey and Minnie Mouse. But this was 2014, and same-sex marriage was not yet legal in the United States. There was a huge stigma against LGBTQIA+ content in children's media. [...] I wanted everything for Ruby and Sapphire, every genre of romantic story. Their romantic reunion, a dramatic fight episode, their romantic fairy-tale origin story, the rom-com baseball episode- it only made sense to top it all off with a big animated wedding, so we pitched the first version of the wedding in 2015. It was called "If You Love Yourself So Much," and at that point it was only one episode, about Garnet marrying herself. I was told at the time that "International S&P may object to some of the more direct language about Garnet as a committed relationship, so we may need to be more subtle when approaching her identity through the lens of a wedding." But I didn't want to be subtle anymore. After the suggestions of changing it to some sort of Gem celebration, I put the story on hold to try to figure out how to do it in a more direct way. Then, in June 2016, lan [Jones-Quartey] proposed to me! Garnet had always been based on our relationship, so that was it. It wasn't going to be honest now, if Ruby and Sapphire didn't get married. We decided it would be an inexorable part of the story. And then the back-and-forth started, and no one wanted to say the real concerns, so instead it was, "Will this appeal to our demographic of six-to-eleven-year-old boys?" But Ben 10 had an alien wedding, Powerpuff Girls had a wedding--there was no question that the Cartoon Network audience would definitely watch a wedding. Arguments were made that it was "out of character" for Steven to want a wedding, but we'd covered our bases there with the episode "Open Book" [S1E51], which had already aired ages ago. It's old news that Steven loves weddings. I wouldn't bend on the story, and every time there was a concern about it not being entertaining enough, I would add more: A big musical number! A huge fight! A half-hour special! This thing will be so entertaining it'll blow kids' hair back! "But if Steven Universe gets a gay wedding, then every show is going to want a gay wedding!" "YES!" I said. "GOOD! WHY NOT???" Eventually the decision came down from on high: We could have the wedding. I knew that was an extremely difficult call to make, and that we were going to be censored heavily and pulled in many countries because of it. And we didn't know at that time if this would mean the end of the show. It looked as if the writing was on the wall, and we were working toward the end. I had been told this would be the final pickup for us, and I campaigned for an additional six episodes on the end of the season in order to wrap up the story--this became the Era 3 arc.
"By the power vested in me by the State of Delmarva..." The show is entirely Steven focused, so it only occasionally shows up in the background, but the Earth of SU is very different from our Earth, largely because of the influence/presence of the Gems millennia ago. SU Earth is basically The History Channel's "Ancient Aliens?" but for real.
PS Delmarva is Delaware plus the Chesapeake peninsula (Eastern Shore of Maryland plus Virginia at the tip of the peninsula). Rebecca Sugar spent a lot of childhood vacations in Delaware beach towns like Rehoboth Beach and these became the model for Beach City.
It wasn't included here, but something I've found to be true across ALL reactions I've ever seen to this episode (and I've seen a lot) is that when Steven tears up the first time, nobody bats an eye, but as soon as that second wave of tears comes, everyone IMMEDIATELY realizes what it means and starts panicking. I've literally never seen a reaction where that wasn't the case and I've just always found it funny. But it also goes to show how well they've set stuff like that up and how good the pacing of that moment is.
I love this episode so much. It sucks that purely for showing a lesbian wedding in this show, it was cancelled early. I’m glad Rebecca sugar stuck to her guns and made them get married. Having ruby wear the dress and the diamonds attack to stop other countries gender changing and not airing the episode was a great touch. The reason this feels so much like a finale is because sugar was scared that the series would be cancelled afterwards. She was then given five or six episodes to complete an arc that was essentially supposed to be a season long which is why people say the finale is rushed.
It truly is a wonder. Literally, SU was one of the pioneers that helped cartoons show more LGBTQ+ themes and characters. Before Korra or Adventure Time, SU was so unapologetically LGBTQ+ that it helped creators with the same ideas and mentality to show unadulterated wlw and mlm characters is truly beautiful. The fact most people want to downplay how important this episode is insane just because the Diamonds show up.
The color white is color at its most complete and pure, the color of perfection. The psychological meaning of white is purity, innocence, wholeness and completion. This was supposed to be the fifth season finale; what follows to the series conclusion was supposed to be expended to a full sixth season. I wonder how Steven's astral journey, was affecting the fight in the real world. What were the Diamonds in the real world doing, when their astral forms were sensing Steven and attacking him?
I imagine they were likely responding to the Crystal Gems fighting them in some way, but without their hearts in it when Steven first began interacting with them. What they did following that, I'm not really sure but I imagine they were likely doing something to avoid or block the other attacks. Granted, aside from Steven and Lion the others based on the clash with Blue Diamond seem to have difficulty actually hurting the Diamonds. I do wonder if their ability to attack his astral form is an ability only the Diamonds themselves can do. Since Steven's powers come from a Diamond it makes a certain degree of sense that they should be able to locate and attack him when others can apparently only interact with him on contact and not know where he is.
Rebecca fought tooth and nail for this episode and CN’s two faced azz uses this show to brag about how they’re lgbt positive when they were actively against it so never let ppl forget what actually happened
There’s also the (possible spoiler alert below!) Steven Universe movie and the Steven Universe Future part of the series, so you still have more to watch after season 5.
Unfortunately, this episode was the one who got the show “cancelled”, the creator Rebecca sugar did everything she could to air it, but Cartoon Network didn’t like the ideia of a LGBT marriage on a kids show, so she had to finish the show in the next 5 episodes, that’s why it’ll be very rushed. Very sad, because this is easily my favourite episode
So here’s the skinny: The wedding was originally pitched and sold as the Season 5 finale. Cartoon Network, in its infinite wisdom, decided not to renew the show because a gay wedding could not be shown internationally, and wouldn’t get any ad revenue from overseas. After much begging, Rebecca Sugar got six more episodes to wrap up the story. This was around the time that Season 2 was airing. So they started airing Season 3 over the course of a month, to clean house. And the show had blown up. They made back all the ad revenue they thought they were going to lose and people were clamoring for merch that they had decided not to produce. So much fandom and discourse and praise for CN for being so progressive… except they had just cancelled their show for having a gay wedding. Whoops. And so they went back to Rebecca, after the finale was already done being made, and gave her the movie she was asking for to wrap things up, PLUS the 20 episodes of Season 6 that they refused to order earlier. And Rebecca Sugar was like, “we’ve already rewritten the show to end when you asked, how are we supposed to just-“ And Cartoon Network replied, “MONEY, BEACH!” And that’s how we got Steven Universe Future.
I wonder why the show's writers decided to destroy Rose's sword. Is it because the sword's story and involvement in Pink's shattering was based on a lie, and breaking it was symbolic of 'tearing away the veil' of deceit?
If blue and yellow no longer seek to attack earth and the crystal gems, that is a good thing. But there are still two BIG things that need to be wrapped up that the diamonds started
If the episodes after this feel rushed it’s because the show was supposed to end after the wedding. Rebecca fought for a few more epsiodes so the next arc might be fast paced because cartoon networks fault.
They made them wear what they wear during the wedding because Rebecca sugar wanted this to happen one way or another. From what I remembered, this decision made the executives to end the show faster, so the team needed to end the show by cramming as much things as they can at the end. The executives aren’t to blame here because the executives knew that this would happen and even though they were supporting Rebecca sugar’s decision, they knew the backlash from the other countries would force them to end the show quickly
And this was the actual reason why SU got canceled and sooo rushed, wich didn't allow rebecca and the writers to tell the story the way they wanted, even with the movie and epilogue series that were approved afterwards 😢
1. Garnet is back 2. I wonder if Bismuth is getting married or if she’s gonna keep the bouquet as a gift 3. Legend has it, Dewey & Jamie ran away to get married (jk I don’t know what happened to them) 4. Greg is so good at guitar, he doesn’t need to play it. His mind plays it (one way of saying the animators made an error but try to point it out in a goofy way)
This episode is great damnn,, i remember i had fallen off from the show when this came out but seeing this one specifically anyways, I didn't know English at the time so i didn't really understand what was going on until the dub came out but i remember crying with the song at the start, the wedding, the fight,,, everything hahshsh i was a mess

this wedding is the reason cartoon network canceled steven universe, which is why the plot is getting hella rushed as we get closer the end of the show
Sadly for me this the last great episode of the original show. The rest is not awful, but is not great either. It's really unfair that this little arc cut the show from another season.
@MaeRose26don't get me wrong, CN really screwed Steven Universe. But the resultion of the conflict at the end is not good writing, no matter if you gave it another season.

I would've really like if Lapis and Peridot were able to connect and talk to Steven in the Astral Plane, it makes sense too y'know?
Your questions about white will be answered in the next episode
13:42 We don't talk about Jasper
holyshit we're already here?! :0
6:02 100% agree
WE'RE HERE!!!
FINALLY IM SO EXCITED
Next episode is even wilder
1. Garnet is back
2. I wonder if Bismuth is getting married or if she’s gonna keep the bouquet as a gift
3. Legend has it, Dewey & Jamie ran away to get married (jk I don’t know what happened to them)
4. Greg is so good at guitar, he doesn’t need to play it. His mind plays it (one way of saying the animators made an error but try to point it out in a goofy way)
15:41 flashbacks to GROW cannon
I´m glad that Lapis came back
This episode is great damnn,, i remember i had fallen off from the show when this came out but seeing this one specifically anyways, I didn't know English at the time so i didn't really understand what was going on until the dub came out but i remember crying with the song at the start, the wedding, the fight,,, everything hahshsh i was a mess
that song is so good!
Diamond days are acomin, get ready ✨
Also the cluster is made of crystal gems (rose’s army/friends)
bro i can't believe i almost missed this reaction 🙏
4:38 holy truth bomb
Also i think he missed the song change at the end credits
Did you forget that Steven had a single facial hair?
Just out of curiosity, this is just Cluster's arm, in the Steven Universe book there is its original form, compared to Beach City
YES!! FINALLY UNTO THE FINAL BATCH OF EPISODES, THE "DIAMOND DAYS"!! i felt bad for blue diamond, and i feel her pain... i lost my mom years ago too.. so i feel how she's hurt.. doesn't excuse anything she did but i feel her pain.. and about white...? heh.... heheheheheh...
this wedding is the reason cartoon network canceled steven universe, which is why the plot is getting hella rushed as we get closer the end of the show
THE WEDDINGGG
I love the rest of the show, but to me, this is one of the top episodes in the series
Pour one out for all the fans who missed this lore episode due to censorship
Love this episode
Would have had an extra season if it wasnt for cn

Are you gonna watch the su movie after normal su?
Tech question, but why does the grey circle keep appearing? It seems random instead of some weird censorship.
I’m early! So excited for this video.

Watch We Bare Bears or Craig of the Creek after Steven Universe.
or ok ko
second on ok ko@@Arcany
Sadly for me this the last great episode of the original show. The rest is not awful, but is not great either.
It's really unfair that this little arc cut the show from another season.
@MaeRose26don't get me wrong, CN really screwed Steven Universe. But the resultion of the conflict at the end is not good writing, no matter if you gave it another season.
you pause way too much
the cuts are too long and too random, we are missing so much fun parts you might have reacted
