Amazing how so few of these last tutorials explain at the end that you need to STUFF THEM WITH SOMETHING. It took me so long to figure out why making a tape cast of my foot made zero sense in the process of shoemaking. The cast needs to be solid, so the tape cast needs to be FILLED WITH SOMETHING. lol - thank you so much for adding that bit at the end there. Newspaper! Excellent option. Better than plastic bags and a lot more safe than alginate.
What about after this, though? I'm trying to figure out what to do next. The only tutorials I found direct masking tape to be drawn on then cut from the last but if I'm using a knife on my duct tape last it won't last long, maybe even beyond the first cuts and if I make a mistake I'll need to spend hours making myself a new last. How do I design a shoe on my duct tape last?
How do you use this, what’s the next step? FYI, I know nothing about shoe making but, I would like to make a pattern for a long thickly cushioned boot to keep my feet warn at night. More like a very thick sock made of materials that wouldn’t absorbed the moisture out of my feet
Where do you intend to wear these boots - in bed, lounging or general (moving about etc.)? What is making your feet/legs cold - drafts, a solid floor sucking the heat from your body, constricted bloodflow...? I've given this subject a fair bit of thought and have experimented different ways of keeping warm. Here just a few basic principles that also apply to garments: - insulation helps to reduce heat transfer - heat has to exist for it to be retained - a chilled body needs to be warmed by heat being added to it or the burning of calories - movement may be necessary temporarily to transfer core heat to extremeties to allow surface capillaries to expand and heat the extremeties - avoid impairing free blood flow (tight elastic cuffs, hard seat edge, crossing legs all contribute) - trapped air near the body to preserve body temperature (thick loose, flexible material that can hug but not press on your body - e.g. loose felt, sheepskin, wool quilting) - cuffs or infills of open edges to prevent cold air entering or warm air escaping - a thiner, dense outer layer to prevent drafts entering through the material (e.g. leather, densly woven fabric, dense felt) - abrupt changeover from high insulation to low insulation can cause chilling of the less insulated area close to the edge, especially when the body part has little warming tissue (lower blood supply, lack of fatt - e.g. the shins) - foot and leg wear can be modular, including replacable parts which wear out more quickly Here a few ideas and tips. Wool is your best friend and can be used in many ways. It is temperature and moisture regulating. You can quickly crochet some socks with very chunky yarn. If used in bed only, that's all you need. For out of bed you want to add that thin, dense outer layer. Or go for sheepskin, with the fur on the inside. To insulate against a cold floor, add a thick, dense felt sole (you can paint the sole with latex to waterproof). You also want the inside foot bed to be softer and more insulating, but the problem there is that whatever starts out that way will, in time, compress. Make that part a removable insole that can be replaced when needed.
So i wonder how do you transfer the soxkform to paper? I just made some forms myself but my feet are quit wider then normal sizes ones so i cannot lay the pattern flat. I could just put some reliefe cuts in the pattern but then the pattern would be smaller and maybe not fit after sowing

I counted 20 pieces of tape. Will try this at home. I love the simplicity, also I think it might take some practice.

Look at some videos on DIY felted boots. I think they could do what you’re after.
