Cowboy Boot Fitting for Kirby Allison. Kirby visits Lee Miller from Texas Traditions to be fitted for his first ever pair of handmade boots.
Lee Miller is a bootmaker based in Austin, TX. From his workshop, he handcrafts boots for famous country musicians and Hollywood stars alike. Lee is a true craftsman and completes almost all the work by himself. Kirby was honored to meet him and get fitted for a pair of his own, and we are excited to share this unique experience with you.

Nice to see it being done the traditional way. The modern way would be to have a 3D scan done and a CNC machine carve the last in seconds! I much prefer the old way, you build a friendship with the craftsman/ artisan doing the work and that's a very good thing.

What a great video! I personally have 4 pairs of boots and let me tell you....finding a pair of boots that fit right is very difficult. For example, you can try on two pairs of boots of the same size and style and they will fit very differently. And good luck finding a boot store in the NY/NJ area....not so easy anymore.
BTW....thanks for making great hangers..Bought some of your men's suit and shirt hangers over the hoidays....Wow...these are great...especially the suit hangers!

Well done, Mr. Allison. I was going to say that most boot wearers in Texas or other hot climes prefer a thicker cotton or even wool sock that will breathe.
Perhaps you have discovered this? I would say most prefer over the calf or at least mid calf fitment. 11/2" above mid calf is the preferred height, depending on the length of you calf.
There is a Jerry Jeff Walker song about Capitol Saddlery where Charlie Dunn worked. He even worked on my factory made boots, but I never had the luxury of having a pair made for me by him.

Allen Sandusky I find myself surprised regarding the lack of technology as well, particularly in regards to last making. As much as I enjoy a master craftsman carrying on traditional methods, I can’t help but think a person’s foot could be 3D scanned in much less time with much greater precision, then a custom last could be 3D printed.

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 років тому +10

Allen Sandusky There are a few companies that try this, but at this point it is all very gimmicky. It is kianda like Chess - it takes a master’s intimidation to really nail the last just correctly.

I imagine this is how it works with this process as well. Some things technology changes are good, but others haven’t been perfected enough through technology to beat the traditional methods.

I've worn boots everyday for 20+ years. I've never had them custom made, but higher quality is a better investment. Even with daily wear I get 7-10 years out of a pair.
You're not saving money if you have to replace them sooner. Also keep an eye on your soles and heals. If you don't get them resoled soon enough you'll ruin the boots.

That was very interesting. I had a pair of speed speed skates made and the guy took a mold of my feet using the material a dentist uses when they take a mold of your mouth. He then filled the mold with plaster and got a detailed mold of my foot. When he was done you could see the veins on my foot. The real amazing thing is when I got the skates it was unbelievable. The fit was unlike anything I have ever experienced. We never wore socks as the mold was taken without wearing socks and if you put socks on your performance went down as you couldn’t feel the skate as well. I had not thought about this but now I want to have boots and shoes made as I can only imagine how great they must be.

Kirby: For someone who only wears dress shoes and socks to match, you will probably end up with boots that are not wide enough to accept thick socks, which you might prefer if you are breaking in new boots. Why not ask the bootmaker for his advice, rather than not knowing what to say, or preferring the dress socks?

Casting takes much longer, and is more expensive than taking measurements; also, if your foot changes size, due to age, weight gain, accidents, ect, you would need to sit for an entire new cast instead of getting measurements taken. What if you're allergic to the casting material? what if you can't take the several hours sitting? The dry measurements are faster, and can be done anywhere too- and it's much easier to teach an apprentice the right way to measure a foot, rather than cast it safely. Less to go wrong.

I have a question, in the intro, you have a pen on the desk, with ink bottles behind in the background, can you say what it is, fountain pen?, or Gel?, as you have plenty of videos on shoes and suits, can we have some on pens "gentlemen" like yourself use.

Can you offer a suggestion for proper care of deep grain elephant hide western boots to prevent aging or cracking over time without discoloring the finish much? Possibly do a video in this series referencing care of the unique leathers found on western boots.

If you are just looking to condition, I would use the Saphir Nappa Leather Balm. If you are looking to condition and shine (with waxes), use the Saphir Renovateur.

now imagine what's gonna happen if the customer's feet are stinky that day, having to work so closely to stinky feet is gonna kill him lol. I used to work at a shoes store when i was in college, and every now and then I encounter customers with stinky feet, the worst one I encountered was a girl!!! It was so bad that I had to move all my other customers to another section to have them try on their shoes. After the smell lingered for like 30 mins after she was gone, customers ran away after passing by that section, we had to call the manager to borrow some of his Breeze to use. Gosh it was bad, it was bad enough for me to remember it for 5 yrs LOL

Question: Why wouldn't the maker just make a cast to create the lasts? Wouldn't that be more accurate and more efficient?

Please ask Lee: How does one clean/condition/polish the SHAFT of the boot, when the shaft has multi-color leather decorations, and/or perhaps there's white stitching on a black boot? Nobody on YT has addressed this, as far as I've been able to determine.
    Many thanks!

So fascinating in 2022 to see the craftsman at work, measuring someone using the same technology that were used to measure John Wayne, and completely ignoring the existence of $800-worth 3D scanners!
