You're an amazing colorist and a wonderful painter. I love your paint application, how you bring the light to life by dragging and scrubbing the paint around, leaving visible texture, and still in the end there's a lovely velvet finish...beautiful. This one is just so striking. I love how the subtle patterns in the dog’s surroundings enhance the painting so much. But that’s because you got the value of the big shapes spot on first. I loved watching you paint it.
Thank you, Edna! Yes, you are right, before starting to paint the patterns (which is usually my favorite part :) I had to make sure that the values of the big shapes were working well in relation to each other.

Thank you, Sherrie. I always mix complements to get browns and greys. The color you asked about must have been mixed with yellow ochre, cerulean blue and maybe a bit of purple.

thin brushes really help, but it’s kind of time consuming. she drew a short-haired breed though, so it was easier for her.
Thank you, Nicole! When painting furry animals you need to squint your eyes to blur separate hairs out. It will make the shapes you need to paint more obvious. Once you see those shapes you will only need to mix a color with the right value and make sure to soften the edges that look soft on your subject.

I was hoping you would do a demo of this one. Thank you! I loved it. As Nicole said below, I would love if you could paint a cat. I want to paint cats, but they turn out terrible... I get carried away with the hair and it starts looking so over worked.
Thank you, Katie. I'll keep your request in mind. When painting animals, the last thing you need to worry about is painting separate hairs :) Squinting helps blur them out. The softness of fur can be shown by creating soft edges between adjacent shapes.
