The original Rambo knife made by Jimmy Lile was actually not a bad knife. It wasnt great, but it wasnt a POS some might claim based on all the cheap knockoffs that wanted to copy it.
8 minutes in and you guys just sold THOUSANDS of TOPs knives! They do make great knives and the steel eagle is one of their best. They have HUNDREDs of models, some even better suited to bushcraft/survival. Great company!
Please don’t ever stop doing what you’re doing, guys. Ron Hood carried the TOPS 7” Anaconda tanto point and swore by it. Dude was a legend and taught millions of us how to survive in the bush. I’d love to see you give the ATAX a review.
I've been blessed to own quite a few really nice knives (*some even quite expensive for me), and the TOPS 107 ("C" or "E") is still one of my absolute favorites. In my humble experience, so many large "wilderness"-style blades are decent at axe-type stuff, but atrocious at actual "knife" chores. The 107 is definitely the exception. It'll split wood like a splitting axe, and then prep your camp food with the same ease. I try to tuck mine at the bottom of my knife cabinet, because if I didn't I probably wouldn't use any of my other knives.
Look after hundreds of hours in the bush I can tell you I never feel like those big survival knives are enough. They always seem to fall in this zone of not big enough or too big for the task I'm trying to do. Couple years ago I switched to a small machete, a Condor Village Parang and have absolutely zero regrets. These days the parang, silky saw and a good multi-tool cover the vast majority of my tool needs in the bush; If I don't have the tool I need I can probably make it. Mind you the village parang isn't perfect, but it has the weight and the size to fill the roll of a small axe or hatchet. There are some changes i would make if I had the skills to make my own, but in general the village parang is my go to for many bushcraft tasks.
I have the 107C Steel Eagle. It is awesome. Large enough to chop, slash, chop branches and small trees. Large enough to dig and saw. Baton it to make firewood. Make fuzz sticks with it. Splinter down wood for kindling. I keep it under the rear seat compartment of my truck along with my tomahawks, space blanket, light sticks, kukri, shovels, and other survival equipment.
It's the first model Tops made, on the batonning part the 107 e has no sawback and the 111a (stretch limo verson) has some space on the back to the point that has no sawback to baton on. Got the tanto point version for more than 7 years now and this is a beast.
Thats not a bad price, I was expecting it to cost more. Love my DBK knife by the way. Its crazy sharp and built like a tank. Can't wait to see the next version
I agree with everything you guys said on the steel eagle, i have 111A for those who dont know that is the extended version of this knife and it is a beast, i got it 6 years ago back when tops had bad sheaths but the thing is a monster, i did manage to pick up a VERY VERY minor warp in the blade when batoning at 15 inch log of hickory covered with knots and it still made it through, great video DBK very enjoyable
"and we all got dissapointed by rambo's knife with it's hollow tube handle and weak blade..." talk about you guy , my custom made one of D2 and heat treated follow me since +20 years in all my wilderness trip/expedition. even took it with me on the summit of Mt Washington.
A tip for charcloth tin holes. Place it just under where the lid screws down...highish on the side. Then leave the lid slightly up but still closed to do the burn. When you want to stop it/seal it just screw down fully and the hole is covered.
Now you guys got me thinking. Of all the big knives I own, and I have many, which would I take into a tactical survival situation. I will have to give that some thought.
Back in the 80s I fell for the "Your $12.99 Survival Knife!!!" ad in a magazine as an 11-12 year old. Sh*t blade with a ONE inch threaded tang that was held on by one nut to a hollow handle packed with fishline, hooks, cable saw, etc and a compass capping the whole thing. Pleather/ vinyl sheath.
Tops make up the bulk of my collection, just love their style. And this Steel Eagle Delta Class is one of my very favourites. Love my DBK knife too, holy cr@p did it come sharp 😁
If they had a more basic handle, it would be great but lose the tacticool factor of the demographic base. Maybe ask Tops to make a bushcraft/survival version of this knife.
I have a tops silent hero which is made with the same steel and heat treating process. And it is very susceptible to bone. I have cleaned several small game animals with it and if you chop through their limbs it leaves microchips in the blade.
been looking to find this in stock in the uk forever. You guys just made it a million times harder! You guys definitely need to try the operator 7. been my go to for years
Have the Tops SXB, and love it for it's pure destructive powers. If I didn't have that I'd be all over this one. Every collection needs a big savage Tops blade.
Serious question...Getting ready for a camping trip. I'm setting up my big, small, and medium knives to include. For the "big" should I include the Tops Steel Eagle or the Extrema Ratio? I have both and am happy with both, but I have not field tested both. I would like your honest opinion.
Hey fellas, as I've started watching I find I agree with your testing methods and more so I'd like to have you review the Emerson "Commander". I would appreciate being notified of your review to catch it. Thank you
