I would have loved to have seen more of Sophie's shots and explanations too. Rick usually does this with Guy. Not sure why it didn't happen as much in this episode. One of the things I love when Rick plays with Guy is the banter between the two. There were a few moments of this with Sophie, mostly her encouraging Rick and celebrating his great approach shot and near eagle. As a woman, it was so extra great to see her role modeling such excellent play and camaraderie.

Sophie’s analysis is spot on. You need to find that ‘feel’ around the greens. I think some short par 3 courses and even pitch and putts would help you because within 100 yards is killing your score.
You are also too emotionally invested in every shot; getting both too high when you play a good shot and too down when you play a poor shot or get a bad break.
As a side note I also noticed that you speak very positively about what to do with the shot on the tee with driver in hand but almost always reference the pitfalls as you approach the green. Obviously this is related to confidence but has a way of being self-fulfilling.

So today at my local course here in Largo Florida -- East Bay Golf Course from the White Tees I shot 74 -- Nope I am not bragging I was inspired by this series last year and started working harder on my own game Thank you Mr. Shiels I appreciate your insight into the game. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to break 75 every round -- but boy it was nice doing it today. Keep Swinging!

    • @buffaloben15golf88

Way to go dude! I just got back from the course I shot 90 on on Wednesday and today didn’t look so good after 13 as I was +9 but I rallied and shot -1 on the last 5 and posted an 8 over 79. Broke 80 today and I have broke 75 only once before and hopefully I can do it again soon. I have shot 38 and 37 on the two days where I have only played 9 holes this year so I think for me it’s mostly a stamina issue. Just gotta stay hydrated, keep the swing from getting too big early so I don’t get tired later (I’m not in good shape), so until I lose some weight there are definitely things I need to do to combat my lackluster physique. Good on ya and hope to join you in the sub75 club again soon.

Rick is a great golfer and let's be honest, most of us would love to have his game, but the difference between him and the folks at the next level is their consistency. The pros he plays with (like Sophie in this episode) don't make big mistakes. There are no chips that go 20 yards or putts that come 10 yards short. They are super solid and that makes their game next level.

    • @juppertan
      @juppertan 2 роки тому +5

I think in practice he is much more consistent than in a match. The mental aspect is more where it's at. Many great athletes suffer from a phenomenon called the "Yips", a seemingly unexplainable loss of ability in the context of competition.

She hit the nail on the head Rick...100 yards and in is your NEMISIS...You seem to have a battle between you and the wedges (In Your Head), and while your putting isn't horrible, you miss way too many!!!
BUT hey, I have some of the same problems! I can hit my Driver, but my mid iron game is HORRENDOUS (no matter how much I practice with them), and it leads me to making way too many double and even triple bogies! My somewhat saving grace is my putting, as it is respectable.
I should shoot consistently around 78-84...HOWEVER, one day I'll shoot 79, and the next day I'll shoot 94, and it's my scoring irons game (or the lack thereof), that KILLS me...BUT, I still LOVE and Play the game!!!

I mean this as a wholehearted constructive criticism. Your reactions after bad shots are only making it that much harder for you to expect, and perform, solid play. The mental game of any sport is the hard part of the sport. 80/20 mental/physical. You have the swings, you've demonstrated that, but your mental game is what needs strengthening. You need to build yourself up, encourage yourself, learn from yourself, teach yourself. Don't beat yourself up, bully yourself, demean yourself.
You're a good player. Get your head in the game, it's got the most influence over your day.

Love it. Such a great series. And I think most everyone on this channel would love a longer format. Understanding how you are approaching shots and just more commentary I think would add both entertainment and instructional value.

Your better shots seem 'smooth' whereas the bad ones and those when playing Westy seem super fast - almost feels like snatching takeaway...

Rick, most of us dream to play the kind of golf you have, and are playing. This series is nice to watch because it shows that we all have those bad holes, or bad days, and that it happens to everyone. Very inspiring to the rest of us to keep moving forward and just keep playing Golf, because that is where the real joy is, not always the score! Some of us can't get out that often, so when we can, we need to just enjoy being out there!

13:31 such a smooth edit/transition big props. Someone nailed it. I feel like the freeze frames of ricks moments are for a montage that Guy is putting together. Breaking 75 gone wrong reel.
My heart skipped a beat when the first frame of Sophie popped up. I love her. She is still my favorite podcast guest. Absolute class. I laughed when she said 'closest to pin?' She was having a laugh.

@@guyr7351 It does certainly provide a bit of hope and a good reminder of the massive difference between a scratch player and the rest of us. Short of Rick's mental game in terms of being too hard on himself at points, his ability to recover from a bad shot is admirable.

You lose 7 to 10 shots a round chipping & putting. Even if you just focused on taking that next step with putting.... you 'd beat 75 every time. Its right there brother.....keep on truckin'.

Golf is so frustrating at time. My index is 7.9 and usually shoot around 85. A few weeks back I was on a heater at +1 through 12 but gave it all back in two holes on the back. 13 pars, 1 birdie, 2 bogies and 8 & 9 on the scorecard 🤦🏻‍♂️

I know, because I can be too. I'm not going to get self-righteous and lecture you. But we make mistakes lol. We shouldn't be calling our lag putt for Eagle "pathetic" and putting it 4 feet from the hole. Dude, you got on the green in two! Just wanted to let you know, I appreciate your videos and instruction, and we all love you buddy.

I feel like Rick practices too much with his driver and his "full shots." He is excellent at those shots.
Yet, his short game doesn't feel like a "weapon," it feels like a liability.
When you're 30-50 yards from the pin, chipping, you need to be consistently getting the ball within 10 feet. Not 10 yards.

I'm not the best golfer by any means. But to me it looks like your effort is outmatching your fun. Rick, from a scrub perspective, have FUN again man. Like, imo, you have a lot fun with the side stuff. Find a way to enjoy actually playing golf again, man. I've been watching from afar for a while. I'm at 5.12 in this video and it's apparent to me you're not having fun. It's a game at the end of the day and regardless of YOUR expectations, it gets the best of us. So F it, have fun, swing a club, go for it, and have a roll for the rest of us!~!!
