she's retired now but she would never miss an opportunity to tell its story
it was the first pipeline going from soviet union to Europe, USA prompted most of Europe to boycott it, but France stepped in and funded its construction

6:45 I don't think Romania should be included in that list as Romania is the 3rd most Energy independent country in the EU and as gas goes only 10% is imported and as reserves go it could be 100% selfsuficient. This is due to long running goals of not relling on Russia that run back to even when they were in the Warsaw Pact.
Definitely Romania has trust issue on Russia.. Moldova was torn away from Romania thanks to Soviet Union.. the sentiment was there even during the infamous Ceaucescu time.
As an American I’m just confused as to how Europe got so dependent on Russian Gas so fast. Like how did Europe manage during the Cold War? I can understand ex Warsaw Pact nations having infrastructure tied with Russia far more than the west of the continent.
Maybe you can clear that history up for your ignorant friends across the Atlantic. I’m wondering if natural gas is a more modern oil boom and one that North America has an absolute abundance of. Like so much that we’d probably never run out if we didn’t care about things like ecological damage or clean water tables.

No, Europe always relied more or less on Russia's gas since the first oil crisis.
As he pointed it out the Russian gas is cheap and has long term fixed tariffs.
Italy was actually at the forefront of this with the national company (Eni) in the 50s and is taught to be one of the reasons why the founder of said company (mattei) was "allegedly" killed by the US secret agencies.
Same as now. Most of those pipelines were built in soviet time.
@@christophorusleonardo8127 It's not just Carbon Emission. The truth is Coal Plants are horrific to operate and just painfully difficult. Just the massive difference in having to physically move coal vs moving gas is a vast improvement. Gas Plants are much easier to operate especially if you have it piped to the building not requiring ships. This was all about making the business easier to operate. aka €€€

Hello Prato guys from a Florentine who lives in London since 1984! Great stuff but what about the huge gas deposits under the Adriatic? We know how much gas in under there and have already built the extracting platforms. Why is the Italian gas not extracted? It would help the Italian balance of payment a great deal. Please look into this matter. It is a real national scandal!

Does anyone know if Germany could use a LNG port in a friendly neighboring country to get gas into Germany until they get a terminal built, then use rail or trucks to transport it? Or is that just not logistically possible?
It is possible but it would be incredibly expensive and waste of time. Using pipeline is much cheaper and no carbon footprint
For example, Germany households average consumption of gas is around 847.5 TWh, and I can't imagine how many trucks that are needed to transport the gas. Keep in mind also that most of European countries is still struggling with truck driver shortages

Russian gas flows to Europe have been lower than usual for several months already. European politicians say Russia is using high gas prices as leverage in a dispute over the Gazprom-backed Nord Stream 2 pipeline project.
Gazprom says it is meeting contracts to European customers.
Europe relies on Russia for around 35% of its natural gas. Most comes through pipelines including Yamal-Europe, which crosses Belarus and Poland to Germany, Nord Stream 1, which goes directly to Germany via the Baltic Sea, and via Ukraine.
Europe's gas markets are linked by a network of pipelines. Most countries have cut reliance on Russian gas over the years and there are also more supply routes that bypass Ukraine.
Might have also been a tool to 'remind' Europeans that Russian gas is essential while they were in preparation for the war?
Now they could bit their own tongue once they realizes the US has billed Europe ridiculous prices for it's natural gas import. Look at one of the European Parliament session, where several MPs complaining about how expensive US gas prices is

Can someone explain to me what's the problem with Russia supplying a big part of the gas that Europe needs?
Because the only "problem" I see is that diminishes Europe's subordination to the US interest.
It diminishes Europe‘s energy autonomy, as Russia is an unreliable gas supplier.

Russia hasn't cut the supply of gas even when Europa pushed by the US tries to isolate Russia with selective and hypocrite economic sanctions ignoring to do the same with other armed conflicts. And NATO has broken non expansionist agreements in the last two decades. I don't buy manichean postures of good vs evil countries. So I'm not sure if that argument of Russian unreliability is solid enough.

This is why European countries need to diversify their energy sources. Nuclear Plants could help in lower dependency to Russian and other foreign gas for example. If Europe had a more diversified energy portfolio it could be more independent.
Sadly there is Greta Turdberg and Greenpeace propaganda who prevented European Continent to do such thing
