Man this video is spot on you nailed it! I have an 86 td which I dropped cam followers into last week. Did my best with the service manual to reassemble but after the new cam seal, that cam pulley was a worry of it self I'm sure it's slightly out of time even though it sounds like a comparatively new car, I did carefully mark everything for reassembly but that pulley likely went out a degree ish lol ! But dude I have not these locking tools and pump gauge to set, I have the aptitude tho. Uhhh yeah dang that's a trick! Thanks for your video, even if I find a moon lit garage guy with these tools now I know what to talk about when inquiring on the right tools and procedure! I enjoy working on my engine. I'll be watching a lot of your videos for education on maintenance procedures. Video on a turbo rebuild next search.
How does this video have this many views and is only 1.5 years old? Haha there must be a lot more interest in old VW diesels than I thought! That is good.
i have a 1.6 d vw of this era : i can turn the crankshaft forever and you can feel the compressions but it looks like the camshaft does not stop you while you are rotating + but when i turn the camshaft it is stopped if i dont turn the crankshaft. What does it mean in your opinion ? engine dead ?
Good video. However, l wonder if you could help me with mine. A1Y engine l have been unable to obtain the measurement for the injector pump...setting.. l keep getting AAZ or others My injector pump is different to the one shown in the video. lt simply has the adjustment is on the pulley ie 3face bolts. l can set it and it's pretty straight forward....but requires accurate setting.. But l am not completely sure on its correct setting.. At present l have it set at 0.90. The engine runs but produces a small amount of whitish smoke above 3000RPM...Not good for an emission test..it would fail. So if l were to reduce to figure to 0.85..might that be correct or am l incorrect for the type of engine. Therefore, you might have more access to these figure than me.. l cannot find them. Or maybe someone else knows. thanks Simon in Spain
What if your flywheel is already off? How do you determine where the crank is then? Please someone help. I’m running blind on this one. What I’m doing is a Suzuki Samurai engine swap.
If I never loosened my pump or pump sprocket, will it be in time simply by turning the sprocket until the lock pin goes in? Or does it still need timed with the gauge?
Hello can you help me find out the marks and settings for a 1.9 f8at ducato. Your video is very helpful im guessing i use the same technique to follow It the belt but what about the diesel pump. Many thanks.
Thank you very much for this great and educational video. I'm working on 78 VW 1.6 Rabbit Diesel, at the beginnig the engine did't fire and I timed the fuel pump and the engine fire up but the RPM are very high and make a lot of smog, can you give some tips in order to fix it. Thanks again.
In this video there is a second tube coming off the turbo wastegate. Can you tell me where it goes. I’ve searched and have not found the answer . It’s difficult to even find a photo of aaz turbo with that second wastegate line. Even Gpop shop who rebuilt the turbo does not know. Thanks!
Great video, I'm working on a 1979 VW rabbit diesel. The injection time is off. The owner claims it's a 1.5liter with a 1.6l head. Back to the injection timing issue. What are the specs for this engine? And the special tools can be found in your Dropbox. Do I have to order the dial indicated tool or do you have a recommendation on where I can rent the tool?
I FOUND THE BELOW INFORMATION ON A FORUM...CAN SOMEONE CONFIRM IF THE FOLLOWING BELOW INFORMATION IS TRUE?.. SPECIFICALLY THE PART WHERE IT SAYS TO REMOVE INJECTION PUMP PIN WHEN TIGHTENING TENSIONER ?... If you don't have the tensioner gauge, then set it to 45 degrees of twist. That 90 degree number is for 8V gassers. BUT, make sure the cam sprocket is loose (but camshaft locked in place), and the lock pin is out of the injection pump when you set the tension. If not, you'll only set the tension between the backside of the camshaft and the front-side of the injection pump. You'll also throw off your cam/crank timing. A lot of people either forget or neglect to pop the cam sprocket free and pull the injection pump lock when they set the tension. Bad idea.
Hey bud I have an AFN 1.9 timing is 100%. Its making hard knocking sound. New sub assembly new head.. Had it check and pressure tested everything seems fine. Do you have any idea if my pump could cause noise?
I was wondering if you had a video for the bleeding and filling of the injection pump and also if the spec for the dial indicator would be correct for my vehicle. I have an 1989 Volkswagon Jetta 1.6 Diesel. I have tried messaging your Facebook and have not had any replies despite the fact that my messages have been seen. I hope to hear back. Thanks!
great job! maybe you could help me out I've gotten myself up to eye balls with and AHU M-Tdi conversion, what do you think lift should be? it's a pump built based on 2.8 vw M-Tdi pump. thanks!
Ryan, please use a torque wrench on the cam bolt and tensioner bolt. Either too loose or two tight can spell disaster. Timing spec is .80~.85, but that was for emissions. Better at 1.05.
I was thinking the same! I couldnt see the gap or marks on the tensioner that he aligned. So 1.05 is ok to run with? Mine is a 1.6 TD and very hard to start on cold days! I hope its not due to low compression. Glow plugs are working but are on a manual switch. I was thinking 5 secs would be plenty but usually takes much longer.
@zoltán timár ok Ive gotten use to direct injection and forgotten how long the IDI takes. I'm counting to 8 now and starts fine old cold days. Fast glow plugs I guess. Thanks!
Is it possible to carefully remove the timing belt, not allowing anything to spin. Then carefully install the new one and not deal with all this timing stuff?
Codeman785 not really. Timing belts do stretch after a while. This means that when it comes time to change the belt, the engine is also in need of a timing adjustment.
I send it to service shop my golf alh tdi And It just crank no start and pressure fuel its low What can be prob bcz The Shop says its not fault on engine or pump but electrikal ?
Does VW make this engine ? I'm trying to find advice for the folks with older aprox 40 hp Yanmar engines used in Sail boats, aprox 90s, They are inside and are belts , right ?
im confused at the 8:30 mark-so you are moving the camshaft crankshaft together until you feel the crankshaft has no more give? and then you turn the cam?
He gave very bad technique there. The crankshaft cannot be “180 degrees out of phase” if it is at #1 top dead center. All you need is crank at TDC and #1 cam lobes closed.
Ryan, Thanks so much for such a good video, I'm in the middle of my first TB change on my 1z along with lots of other maintenance, my question is this...In the case that I have to re-time my pump, will my old injector lines fit back on? It seems like moving the pump body will change the angles of all the bends and such, Thanks again!
This is probably a bit late lol, but someone still might find it useful in the future. The amount you have to adjust the pump is so minimal that the lines will still fit fine.
Hi Really great video. I am trying to time my lucas fuel injection pump is it done in the same way as in your very good video. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
What if your just changing out the shaft seal on the pump.. Removing the belt, pump pulley, replace seal and refit pulley in same position on the woodruff. Could I end up knocking the timing out atal?
I don't know if I'm missing something. How are you finding TDC? I have an extra motor and I'm trying to find TDC. I have the cam straight and the engine at 0 degree. What are you feeling when you're rotating the engine?
This is why I'm getting rid of my 2003 TDI golf, the injection pump was killed by low sulfur fuel. I don't have the tools/skill to do this. I'm comfortable doing things on cars/light trucks, but as Dirty Harry said, "a man's got to know his limitations....." Also, the value of the car now, and what I'd have to pay in tools/parts just isn't worth it anymore to me. Hopefully, a VW guy will buy it and fix it.
Everyone is saying how this video is so good.... go try to time a pump according to what this guy is saying.. there is so much about the final adjustment of the pump that dose not add up. I'm doing the timing on a mtdi pump and this makes no sense at all
A lot of times you can find them on eBay cheap enough if you search 'Vw diesel timing' or something like that. Although there are better options my cheap ebay set has lasted 5 years so far.
Доброго времени суток,я из России.непонял вас по разговору ,понял по действиям.хочу узнать ,стопор коленвала самодельный?или можно такой купить где-то?могу сам сделать,есть возможность ,нужны размеры.бро спасибо за видео
Greetings I'm trying to time an aaz and I went around three times 3 mm to get back to top dead center actually 3.05 I only want one Rev on my indicator what's going on here help
Still, in 2023, the best clip for this task, thanks for the great info
Sent here by William Pool. I have an AAZ ready to install in my Vanagon gasser. Very well done and easy to follow. I subscribed. 👍👍👍😎😎😎

Nice job guy! even though I'm not going to attempt it, it is still interesting to watch what all is involved with doing the job.
Thank you for this video I have to do the timing belt on my MK1 Rabbit 1.5l diesel and I'm nervous!
Maybe a dumb question but isn't it better do time the pump before you tension your belt? I'm still learning and this video has been verry helpful 👍
How does this video have this many views and is only 1.5 years old?
Haha there must be a lot more interest in old VW diesels than I thought! That is good.
Thanks, same chassis and engine pumps going on TODAY, small world. Good swap
What belt do you use for the alternator with AC removed
If the crankshaft, camshaft and pump have been locked, what is the need for the timing of the pump if its timing was correct before the belt change?
Its the same process on a 1.9 diesel motor 1y? The pomp has 2 hyres and does not rotate the body of the pump🤔
i have a 1.6 d vw of this era : i can turn the crankshaft forever and you can feel the compressions but it looks like the camshaft does not stop you while you are rotating + but when i turn the camshaft it is stopped if i dont turn the crankshaft.

What if you don't have the flywheel mark for timing? My AAZ isn't in a vw anymore
You can probably put a chopstick in the #1 glow plug hole and feel the piston come up.
Don't try to remove the camshaft bolt with the cam lock tool in place.
Great video. What size adapter do I need for the dial gauge? I have an AAZ I need to time the IP! Thank you
Also, where do you get the adapter for teh guage from, do you know what its called?

Where can i get that crank locking tool for that engine? I have a 1.6 TD engine I'm working on...I can't set the timing without it.
I like to thank you very much, your video helped me to set up my timing pump at the ABL 1.9 engine.
Best part of the whole video. 20:59 I’d call that a technical term. 😂

Does anyone know the toque spec for the camshaft pulley?
excellent, but dont forget to remove the camshaft lock before rotating the engine!
I have camshaft rad is bent little bit, might be because of that misfire sometimes cylinder 1 and 4...?
great job! maybe you could help me out I've gotten myself up to eye balls with and AHU M-Tdi conversion, what do you think lift should be? it's a pump built based on 2.8 vw M-Tdi pump. thanks!
What size socket will lock the injector pump?
I need THAT adapter . Mine is pitiful and hard to use. Please post a link to the supplier.
I have a Aaz that doesn't have a fly wheel on it is it still possible to find top dead center on the crank?
NO ENTIENDO INGLÉS, PERO MUY BIEN EXPLICADO, GRACIAS

1.05mm on the 1.6TD, yes, perfect. Fast glow plugs should go for 7-10 seconds, slow up to 30 seconds
Thx!
Randall Maness
@zoltán timár ok Ive gotten use to direct injection and forgotten how long the IDI takes. I'm counting to 8 now and starts fine old cold days. Fast glow plugs I guess.

I haven't got cam shaft lock plate so if I locked by spanner or anything to keep cam shaft straight.. is that timing spot?
Is it possible to carefully remove the timing belt, not allowing anything to spin. Then carefully install the new one and not deal with all this timing stuff?
Codeman785 not really. Timing belts do stretch after a while. This means that when it comes time to change the belt, the engine is also in need of a timing adjustment.
Same thing on ABL 1.9 engine?
Wait why would I need to time my injection pump if I dont move it?

Hi Ryan , is there any spacer/gasket between the head and tensioner on VW 1.6TD engine?
This the same for a SB / RA?
Does the flywheel only go in one way?
Bonjour,je trouve pas le repaire du volant moteur sur Audi 80 1.6 td
Came sure that cam shaft gauge is Perfectly perfect, perfect
When I rotate mine to find Max lift it moves over 2mm with a 2mm preload.
Ryan, Thanks so much for such a good video, I'm in the middle of my first TB change on my 1z along with lots of other maintenance, my question is this...In the case that I have to re-time my pump, will my old injector lines fit back on? I cant get the slack off the right side of the Crackshaft to where it on the tensioner side
I have the same engine
I assume that this is an early AAZ as I look at the pump. Is it really true that the AAZ with tha late IP does not quite fit the mk1?
Hope you checked that crank nose keyway!
The best video! I'm now gonna time my d2.4 liter inline 6
Sdi ayq engine same injention timing specie?
man i still cant find my pump timing its a newer disel pump i need help

Hi
Really great video.
I am trying to time my lucas fuel injection pump is it done in the same way as in your very good video.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
super excited work
well done!
Молодец, не понятно по языку, но наглядно всё понятно. Спасибо.
tanks brother God bless you
3:44 - Nope that's the camshaft
and@7:17
Lol
do you have to do all that timing when you take the old pump off and put a new one on?
Yes. If you are changing out the pump off you basically have to do all of this.
GOLF 6tsi timing change
What if your just changing out the shaft seal on the pump.. Removing the belt, pump pulley, replace seal and refit pulley in same position on the woodruff. Could I end up knocking the timing out atal?

He is feeling the pistons hit the valves. That is not a good way to do it.
thanks for the hit of timing marks i could find the crank marks but thanks you i did thumbs up to you

Where can i find that indicator and adapter?
A lot of times you can find them on eBay cheap enough if you search 'Vw diesel timing' or something like that. Although there are better options my cheap ebay set has lasted 5 years so far.
Thank you so much very informative well done
Great video, it’s a shame you didn’t show the pump being tightened up at the end. Very educational.
