This looks like a game you swear you remember playing as a kid, but you can't find a single trace of it online and your friends don't recall that said game ever existed.
Do you have an example of a specific game like that?
@@megapulsar9244 not a game but there was that obscure scooby doo show where it was just shaggy and scooby and scooby turned into a fucking mecha
@@megapulsar9244 the only game I can think of is the Charlie bear DS game
fighting force for the nintendo 64
i remember playing a game as a green and pink lizard that used its tongue or something to get around. one of the stages had a really calming tune inside a factory that sticks with me to this day but i cant find the game or that song again.
They got a jet set radio looking sonic fangame now. That's awesome.
My thoughts exactly
Seems its based off future, with the grinding and the souls
Abso-freaking-lutely! The time is now.
Literally what I thought. Jet set radio is the first Xbox game I played and this looked so much like this. We need a full release of this. Why isn't this getting traction?!?!?
I was gonna say that! I really hope we get some jet set radio soon
This is what we need more of: uber stylized games with tons of pizzazz, but that are still unquestionably Sonic.
No pizza . Just chilie dogs lol
Yes i don't care pizzas but forces..
That would fix sega trying to make sonic every sonic problem
@@user_Sultang05 Forces needed more pizzazz. He got the attitude but not the pizzazz
what means "uber stylized"?
That sonic voice actually kinda fits this style of sonic
It's a cool in between of Jason Griffith and Ryan Drummond
its sad trying to voice sonic like that. so distasteful
I think the voice fits really well too. Honestly been having mixed feelings on the voices since after the adventure and heroes games.
@@rickjames5998 I wish people weren't this opinionated over silly things like Sonic voices. You can dislike it, sure, but going so far as to call it distasteful is not only rude, but also just annoying. Again, how do you even get upset over something so trivial?
I like how it FITS. I think of the main series, and where the English voice acting sometimes feels off is that he is supposed to be 15, not 30 or 40. But credit to all the VAs for giving it their all, regardless of who anyone prefers.
Everything from Sonic’s voice to the stylistic aesthetic and music gives off a signature feeling to what I would consider to be a combo of Sonic Rush and Jet Set Radio either on the PS1 or NDS.
I was sure I wasn't the only one thinking about Sonic Rush when watching this.
I really hate to say this because i really like Sonic’s, voice in this, but some of it sounds like when Chris Chan, is getting angry, or trying to break something back in the day before he started becoming trans, Sonichu, mod for this when lol.
Sonic X-Treme if got re-made by another game studio & revamped like 2000's era (good ending)
I’d say more early DC. Some of the effects with the trails seem incredibly complex
or some dreamcast C:
Sonic Storm is basically what I’ve been wanting from a Sonic game for as long as I can remember now. Low poly aesthetic, a shit ton of style, skill based mastery over momentum based control in a fully 3D game, level design that is as satisfying as SA2 to go for high scores, satisfying so purely blitz through, and satisfying to explore, as well as multiple playable characters that all play through the same stages but have their own abilities. I cannot wait to play more of this game and see the story. I’m genuinely as excited to see and play more of this as I am for Sonic Frontiers.
This genuinely has the ability to become my favorite 3D Sonic game ever, no joke. P-06 is currently my favorite purely 3D Sonic game (followed closely by the Adventure games), so I think fan games that actually turn out to be completed definitely can be counted, but even that game isn’t better than Gens (my favorite hybrid game) or 3&k/Mania (my favorite 2D games). Storm has the potential to beat out ALL of those. I just have to play more of it to fully determine if it holds up.
I count fangames and even related high-speed platformers as well. S3&K and Sonic Mania are great and, while not a Sonic game, Freedom Planet can easily stand right up there with those, being as good and as polished as those.
As for 3D games including fangames, even if everyone knows this one I feel the need to point out that Sonic Robo Blast 2 can easily stand next to the Adventure series as some of the best 3D gameplay the Sonic series has had. The same goes for Spark The Electric Jester 2.
Here's hoping that Frontiers and Storm somehow surpass even that!
I can respect this take. Low poly Sonic isn't my favourite aesthetic but this particular game does feel like it fits the overall style of the series and feels fresh in terms of fangames instead of the multitude of Unleashed and Toei or OVA models out there.
The gameplay is definitely a step up from what I've seen in other fangames as well. Nothing wrong with 3d momentum as well but it's not the sole answer to making a Sonic game enjoyable and without proper level design just makes exploration feel more like a chore, whereas this traversal system still keeps the easy to learn, repetition to master gameplay the series is known for and remains fluid.
I'm quite fond of P-06 as well in terms of fangames that do 3D Sonic well and Storm is up there with Project Hero as well as Utopia in that space. Heroes, Shadow, Adventure 1 and Unleashed are my personal favourites in terms of the slightly more open levels and gameplay style and while Frontiers may not go in any of those directions, I do hope that it feels just as fun to traverse those open-zones.
This is better than SA2 ever was dude.
This is AWESOME! My only complaint is that the black speed lines around him feel a bit too much when grinding, you can barely see any part of his body, lol. If they could be toned down only while grinding i'd say it otherwise looks awesome.
yeah the speed lines are way too much
Well, he's a living blur after all, so...
If they'd just overlay his model over all the lines that'd work just fine
It’s supposed to emulate jet set radio future, so for that purpose I want it to stay lol
@@oddboi2256 don’t think they’re talking about the cell shading just too much black shit around him u rly can hardly see him
Based on the graphics and Sonic's more 'extreme' '90s style, this really feels like a lost Sonic game from the Saturn (though the framerate is definitely too nice for that to be completely true).
saturn ran at 60fps
This doesn't look like a Sega saturn to me at all, I think games like sonic robo blast 2 are what the Sega saturn would look like.
Too smooth for saturn
Makes me wonder what Sonic X-treme would've been like...
The sonic launch title for the SEGA PlayStation (yes Sony offered an independently made PlayStation console to be under SEGA’s brand as an alliance against their common enemy of Nintendo)
Love the JSRF inspiration
It even has the same motion blur and grinding animation as jet set
i love how naturally fast he is and that there is no boost needed to make him fast
Definitely handled better than the adventure games just refusing to give you speed at all for the sake of platforming
This is the sonic game we need that platforming shit is ass
@@jackmichhoffnickkerr2745 sonic has always been an experimental series, even if it started out as a 2D momentum based platform game, once sonic cd came out the flood gates were open for sonic, and even if he had a rough transition to 3D the franchise still managed to stay relevant and become as popular as it is now,
But I’m not saying that you’re wrong, it’s your choice if you want to like a certain play style so you do you man.
@@dr.insignia7361 uhhh yea that was the plan
@@jackmichhoffnickkerr2745 it was?
This is really giving me JSR vibes if not Sonic Rush. I adore the fact that Sonic changed shoes and gloves and swapped it out with some cooler ones, not that the previous one was boring or anything. I'm a big fan of the astethic. I enjoy how much the music juat screams Hideki Naganuma. I also like Sonic's model and is actually now my favorite over Sonic Rush. Outside of that, despite this being designed like a PS1 game, I really get Sonic Jam vibes from both the art direction and level layout and that's something I like. The hud is also way pass cool. Sadly, most games and fan games don't even do their huds justice like Storm.
Music is nothing like Hideki's works, and this is something a lot of people skim over; there's a massive lack of sampling. The melody is also really...weird. Not in a good way, either. And not something Hideki would make I reckon.
We've officially gone beyond the PS1 aesthetic and beyond synthwave.
This is undoubtedly DS inspired but it's also freaking amazing and I want this to be a full game so badly...
Now this has got the Sonic+Jet Set Radio feeling that I’d never thought I’d see come to existence. Truly amazing
This feels like a Dreamcast game, if Sega were trying to court the PS1 audience.
If anything it's more like a Saturn game.
It’s intended to be a saturn era game
2:09 Okay, how in the heck did you find that entrance there? Legitimately curious, how long have you been playing this?
But I dig the style and aesthetic of Sonic Storm and even the controls feel intuitive... at least when you use Steam's Controller Configuration.
I spent around 6 hours yesterday playing it. Mostly to find the 1st medal LMAO. Then after I found it, I was ready for the speedrun life.
@@sonicovertime That's some serious dedication.
I only spent about 1 hour before recording my video. Most of it just to get the hang of the controls.
Are you talking about the gigant gaping entrance or is there a secret entrance by sliding against the wall of the tunnel?
@@DeLewrh That "giant gaping entrance" I thought was just set dressing.
Looks cool. Sounds like a piano and synthesizer got thrown down a never-ending flight of stairs.
This game SCREAMS early 2000's even more than sa2 itself.
Amen
Yes exactly!
@@SoniaSpectrum you mean the break? In that case hell yeah, amen brother!
@@leothehuman_9476 sister* but yes!!!
Nah Sonic Adventure 2, is very much 2000 vibes i mean literally Throw it away sounds like a Linkin park song.
This game’s level design feels like a route you’d take in a stealth game
The turrets are actual snipers, their accuracy is insane! lmao.
This World also remember me Open World games (Like the upcoming Sonic Frontiers)
@@sonicovertime Giving Jak 2 snipers a run for their money, but on that note, they do need to be much more accurate than your average platformer when you aren't forced to engage (think Heroes boss design or combat rooms).
It seems they are sparingly used at least.
@@thelastgogeta hmmm, a Jak fan I see?
@@VongolaXZax Yes, he mentioned Jak 2, so he's probably a Jak fan. Great deduction..
Awesome, Sonic looks a character out of TMNT and this game has given me Crash Bandicoot vibes and Ape Escape. :)
Especially the 2003 series
I love the bit crushed sounds so much! this game has a style that is so unique and yet so undeniably sonic! The low poly models, the low res textures, its just so sick!!!
The bad thing it reminds me of Chris Chan’s, bad video quality back in 2008, or 9 lol.
@@joshshrum2764 n o not chris chan a n y t h i n g but chris chan- lol
@@cable_g0re I’m in to deep i have been watching reactions of it from a UA-camr, named J, and you know this really sounds strange, but now that I’m, actually missing the old Chris since I’m at the true dark turn era the tomgirl, stuff, and you know the rest yeesh, but back to the topic it’s all i hear, and it doesn’t help i hear that in a Sonic fan game it’s disrespectful even though I’m not trying to make it a criticism.
the jet set radio style will never get old
If you were curious A rank is 50,000, I didn't see anything happen when I got it.
I always loved this sense of flow that was always present in the Speed stages of the Adventure games, especially SA2. Glad to have it back.
This is what I’ve been wanting for so long. 2D Sonic in a 3D environment. Just like they had it in the Adventure titles
Except you can actually go fast in this game
OKAY LISTEN this is everything i want in a game graphics wise, the way the sound comes to you like its a low poly ps2 game like sly copper when sonic and shadow were talking is all i want in life
I like the Jet Set Radio vibes from this game.
How saturated the colours do you want it to be?
Producers: yes
Honestly taking 3D Sonic into the direction of stunt game just makes so much sense
i feel like a "jet set radio" kind of soundtrack would fit so well into this game. just oversampling to fit this super stylized game
This heavily reminds me of Sonic Rush but in a 3D form. Sonic Rush was a big part of my childhood so the second I saw this I immediately started smiling. This is so fucking cool
This is what happens when you mix in Jet Set Radio and Sonic The Hedgehog.
That's actually a HORRENDOUSLY powerful idea
Uh oh I don’t like hearing about Sonic, being mixed with things you know what I’m talking about, and specifically who.
@@bricky7081 More so than mixing Sonic, and Pokemon, together?.
This is what sonic always needed, as much as I love adventure 1 and 2 and to a lesser degree heroes and generations. We need sonic using his momentum in interesting and fun ways mechanically. The game needs flow, not an on rails button prompt sim and unforgiving platforming. I want to feel like Tony hawk without the board combined with the flash. Give it some style and flair and that's sonic. The game needs to breathe a bit like this does. I've always appreciated sonic but even earlier games juggled what made him fun to play as and what was interesting to do. (Putting a spike wall off screen in front of a booster isn't fun it's a cruel prank you mess around with in a level editor to piss off the other devs) I hope some passionate devs take this and are able to teach what's left of team sonic some new and fun innovate ways to rework the formula because this looks fun. It doesn't look stiff and rigid. The momentum to dash back and forth makes sense, the free running parkor aspects felt fresh and made sense for sonic. Keep up the great work team
Even the trail sonic leaves behind when rolling is awesome.
This level design having a lot of paths is really cool. The problem though is how would any player know where to go? Even in this video it looks like the player got confused a few times. My suggestion is to imbed some directional signage into the level on a simple/easy path for newer players. Leave more advanced routes unmarked so players still have the option to discover them and try them as they please. If the level artist/designer is clever, the signage should not even feel intrusive.
Pretty sure this is a test stage, either that or it being nonlinear is the point. Youre supposed to explore the level to find storm souls it seems. Giving a linear direction seems to be counter to the design intention.
The runner didnt even get lost, they showed multiple ways to get through the level. Would kinda defeat the point of a speedrunning, time attack game to have directions on how best to clear it.
@@dmdoombot8796 I don't think its a test stage. If you mean blockout, maybe. Though it looks more like Sonic Jam style level but finished. How does signage counter exploration? There is nothing stopping the player from not following the signs. It just helps players that would get lost from having a bad time if you care about that. I don't think you're meant to explore (like stop and explore) the level given that its timed and there is a start and finish. Its not like an open world. You have a wide variety of paths sure but you ultimately start and end at the same place and you're meant to reach the end asap. So you're still free to discover the best routes.
I said that the signage would only be on the simple path, not the best path so players would still be encouraged to try to discover those better paths. I feel like you intentionally misunderstood my comment given your last sentence.
@@dmdoombot8796gonna be honest with ya man I had zero fucking clue what was going on. It IS counter intuitive to make you stop and look around to find these in a Sonic game of all things. This guy obviously has played this is why he found the collectables so fast, but I'd probably stop every 10 seconds to look around for em.
@@dmdoombot8796 The level design is awful. At no point is there any indication of what to do and where to go. In a comment the guy that made this video said he played this level for over 6 hours trying to find the medals. No one should have to play a single level for 6 hours to be able to complete it.
Reminds me of a time when kids wore jinco jeans andcovered there binders in happy bunny stickers.
Totally looks like a later PS1 release, when the dev's had a grasp of how to get the most out of the console visually before PS2 took over.
Yo the poles at 7:36 are a cool concept, the whole art ditection and game look amazing!
Dang. This looks like something official that was realesed for the Saturn or Dreamcast back in the late 90's.
I'd love a fast parkour based game like this.
OMG, the work that u made here was so awesome, reminds of the real fun and feeling speed from 2000s sonics
Bruhhhhhhhh
I love this so much
The entire Aesthetic of a old ps2 down to the audio compression and everything
I hope this blows up cuz id love to see more of this
this is the most smoothest, most FLUID sonic game movement i've ever seen
*Truly Amazing!!*
You didn't even watch the whole thing.
It’s giving Sonic Xtreme/32x projects🔥
I've noticed the PS1 aesthetic for games has started to rise to the surface. It used to he pixel games for indie titles and they still are of course, But I am seeing way more and more demos with the ps1 style. Its very nostalgic and, in cases, can be pleasing to the eye. I hope we see this become more regular in releasing games in the future (in regards to indie titles at least).
So I know everyone's praising the gameplay and visual style (as they should, they're great!), but I just wanna point out what an EXCELLENT soundtrack this demo has. It's unique, mysterious, fits the abstract weird world Sonic is in, and is just incredibly stylish, memorable and unlike anything I've seen before. Kudos to the composer!
what the fuck this soundtrack sounds awful what the hell are you talking about
@@eryiusnefarious Hey, no need to be rude! Both to my opinion and to the independent composers who put their time into this!
That said, if it's not your cup of tea that's fine, I personally love it and would love to hear more like it!

and the fact that fanart is going to be included is something awseome :)
smooth as butter, fast as lightning, and love Sonic's new look. please keep us updated on this game.
So this looks like the alternate timeline where SmileBuilt was put in charge of a Sonic game for the Dreamcast
what's SmileBuilt?
@@polychrome2838 They were an old subdivision of Sega that made Jet Set Radio. They've since been merged into other subdivisions. An example of Sega subdivisions is like Sonic Team, or Atlus.
This brings back memories of Jet Set Radio with the graphics style
I was shocked the whole time. Amazing work to whoever made this its amazing.
HOLY SHIT but the control of the movements is so fucking amazing, I was at the edge of my seat how amazing it is!! and I love the aesthetics and music like damn bruh
This is something I didn’t know I needed lol. Also the aesthetics look like jet set radio and sonic have a child.
This looks and sounds like a really good ds game
I absolutely love the colors and the designs. Everything looks so sharp and stylized. It looks fantastic
This is quite amazing! I kind of like how open the levels are, but it’s not quite compact enough in my opinion. I like how stylized it is, though! It kind of looks like a DS game
I love this so much...reminds me of a ds game that I would play hours on end.
This game would be simply mindblowing in the PS1 days from a technical standpoint
With little texture warping, insane draw distance, and very little area pop-in, it could've been so impressive
This game feels so smooth, this is truly an amazing and unique fangame I hope they find a way to continue I will definitely support this. I would love frontiers too feel at least 10% like this does, its pure freedom
Sega: Eternally struggling to make Sonic work in 3D.
Sonic fans: Laughs in fan games.
We need more games like this, where you can actually go fast, and the platforming compliments the speed.
Not only that, but an OST to compliment the level design and gameplay.
0:01 ... I'm in love
Sorta looks like a combination of jet set radio, killer seven &/or no more heroes kind of vibe here. Really great job ;)
This is The most polished fan engine I've ever seen. If they can nail level design this could be a fully realized product
This feels like a Sonic game that would have released on the PS2 in that edgy, gritty era. Very cool!
It kinda looks like a ps1 and ps2 style game (also sega needs to hire that voice actor of sonic)
Sega really doesnt need to hire anybody
they already had some good voice actor just the gameplay need some fix
Sonic looks beautiful!! I love the style!!
I love the Jet Set Radio aesthetic. & how the gameplay is based off of momentum more than just running to build up speed.
It looks really cool, but there's so much rail grinding and light speed dash that it more closely resembles an on-rails shooter than it does a Sonic game. If you rely too much on both of those mechanics then the game kind of becomes more of a Sonic QTE.
Welcome to most Sonic games lol
Props to whoever did Sonic’s voice, it genuinely sounds awesome
A Sonic fangame with a style remenicent of Jet Set Radio?
I never knew I needed this until now.
Theres something very nostalgic about this fan game, and I'm all for it.
Tried this out for myself last night actually. Really cool concept and artstyle, like goddamn. Didn't like the physics and level design tho, ugh. Am really interested to see what the end product will look like though, this definitely has potential.
Indeed 95
The physics are so clean once you get use to it. Level design I'm sort of mixed on.
Yeah once you get used to the physics it’s really fun lol
"PS2 type graphics"?
Not true, I can look at this without cutting my eyes on jaggies.
It's more a half and half Saturn/Dreamcast style.
Like Sonic Jam and Jet Set Radio had a strange love child.
I doubt the PS1 would look like this, but PS2 would be fairly close. Dreamcast would probably be higher poly. xD
@@sonicovertime Imo it'd be most at home on the DC. Fewer polygons than the PS2, but much better shading capability.
@@sonicovertime The PS2 does WAY higher poly counts than the Dreamcast EDIT: grammar.
DSi?
What i love the most from this is the really compressed audio. Really driving home the Saturn, PS1 feel to it
This is the COOLEST THING I HAVE SEEN IN ALL OF 2021.
The art direction ?? The models, the aesthetics, the style, the colors, the filtering... I just.. woah !! And the SOUNDTRACK, holy shit ! I haven't been this mindblown in a while ! I love everything about this, the flow, the parkour moves, the character design, all the mechanics... It looks so cool ! I would probably suck at it because my brain doesn't have the computing speed to process everything going on and how unique it all looks, but god damn what a treat to watch !
Wow !! Creative Sonic fans, you guys are SO COOL ! Legit the best fandom I've seen for creativity and skill level ! POP OFF SONIC FANS !!
Alright, guess I have to just say it, this game looks like a mess, I can't even tell if it looks fun to play or not.
should give it a try, it's pretty addicting once you get use to the controls.
Omg I am in love with this idea.
I HAVE to go play it now.
Super impressive! Looks like an awesome 3DS game. A bit of polish here and there would make it even better, but considering it's a fan game it doesn't need to. I love the unexpected idea of mixing Sonic with a JSR aesthetic, and the name is perfect.
You got me just by the name of the agressive skating grinds
I have no idea what's happening, but it's very epic and I like the animations!
Man i got masive nostalgia from the compressed sound effects and voice clips and music sounding like its straight off a DS
Love the "I don't own this, no copyright infringement intended" text folks like to put on things. Holds up great in a court of law.
The space cadet pinball sound effects are a nice touch
If the gameplay of frontiers is this smooth everyone will make it the game of the year! Hopes Are high for me. This is awesome
This looks incredible if not one of the best Sonic fangames I have ever seen
So much Jet Set and Sonic Rush vibes here...
I'm happy to see sonic storm finally being released and getting the attention it deserves!
all these comments are so nice saying such good things about it
I love that it has a more SA2-style gameplay! I've been itching for more games with that playstyle for YEARS
Holy crap two of my favorite franchises combined into one game, sonic and jsr
Love the art and sound in this
Man, this looks promising. Just bit of extra spit and shine on the physics and graphics, along with some 10-20 levels and there's a good game Sonic fandom deserves!
I hear the space cadet pinball noises! Great choice!
this feels like a nice proper evolution from rush and i love it
It really just feels like a GameCube sonic game that's authentic and completely genuine. Looking forward to future releases.
Looks awesome! Kinda dark in color tho, I'd change those blacks to a dark blue or even a neon blue to contrast. But everything else looks like it's spot on!
Love the jet set radio influence here and there.
this is fkin awesome. its like a free style sonic game full of speed and open to routes! love it
Wait this is so sick! I have to try it!
I feel like this is how all 3D Sonic games should be like, this momentum-based movement is a brillant idea for a character which motto is "gotta go fast", unlike in most sonic games which lack any fluidity of movement.
This gameplay is very impressive in a lot of ways I'm Impressed
