Transalp 600: Taking it steady down one of Britains Toughest Roads

- A movie i made of me riding my Transalp 600 down Stanage Edge, on an old Roman Road. Long Causeway was a Medieval packhorse route in England, running from Sheffield to Hathersage in Derbyshire. Used in the past to transport Salt from Cheshire, oil, hardware good, barrels of tar, hogsheads of treacle, glue from Manchester, lead and small grinding stones.
In the video, i take it super steady, wouldn't want to hurt myself or my bike out there, far enough to be a real danger.
I have also used the opportunity to practice filming on my 60D and Editing.

Just found this video, I love my Transalp nice to see one used like this and cared for. I think our old little Transalp's can still do as much or more than some of these modern ones. 👍👍
Thanks mate. I think so too. About to turn mine into a more off road style bike. It got stolen and I recovered it a while back and it came back damaged.
Shame about the theft mate but looking at the roads you can get to I'm sure you'll have years more fun in the old girl, mines 20 and still going strong 👍

hi, well I have started riding my Transalp on the rough and standing on the pegs. I modified the pegs so they are greater in width and I increased the rear shock preload. I think that I will put a spacer in n the front fork springs because the bike is a 1994. I ride mainly n the mountainous tracks north of Béziers, France. I'll eventually make a little video.
I used 2 polypropilene pipe connectors on top of the fork springs. didn't have the chance to test them long term to see how they wear, but I heard others did it too
Great Vid Wes, some really tricky riding on that route and you showed loads of skill and care. Would love to ride it... as i see on facebook they've now made a supersmooth boring old path now? Maybe I could ride it then on my CBR lol

Cheers man, yeah, deffo missing that sportiness im after. I haven't really been able to push myself too hard for worry of falling off alone way out there. You did break your back 5 mins from home remember ALONE, i'd be pretty much bolloxed. Getting a bit stale at points so im gonna have to spice it up for the next one!
Hi, that looks like an awesome video with a good adventure bike being used for some good adventure riding. Me and a pal with a transalp 700 and baby varadero were wondering where exactly this trail is, as it looks like a really good challenge. Would be good to meet up and ride it if you're interested, but we would Defo like to know where it is on a map if you could let us know.

My Transalp will do most of what i apply it too. Its a capable machine and not something i have chosen to ride for show in the city centre. That aside, it is very heavy, and there are machines i could ride, more suited to this terrain. I'd most definitely have a bike for every scenario if i could afford it. Thanks for watching though :)

Hello Wesley, yes I know! I was walking with my Honda Transalp in the Ukrainian Carpathians in extreme ways. I had so much luck! I have here in Silesia still a Yamaha XT 350 This is very well suited for it.

Thanks a lot. Not quite, this is/ was a B.O.A.T (Byway open to all traffic). Its an old Roman road. There are a few still left around here but walkers are getting them all closed down.

Its in bits at the minute. Rebuilding it as a Scrambler. Hopefully get to it this summer.

Is this trail still legal?, pretty local to me (Manchester) would love to check it out one day, found some nice routes south of glossop but only roads not trails. Cheers for posting!
+Ania Żurawska Hi Ania, there are tonnes of Roman roads such as the ones in this video in Derbyshire. These 'trails' i'm on have been official roads for hundreds and in some cases, thousands of years. Only recently they've started closing a number of routes but there are still many that are fully legal to ride (though the walkers would often beg to differ). There are a lot of these fun trails in the White Peak area of the Peak District. Take a look through my video for the names.
Bamford Clough is in my vids but they've recently blocked it off for refurbishment. (Its proper steep!)
Look for the BOAT's (Byway Open to All Traffic) on OS maps. Also, perhaps Join The TRF of similar group.

is there any benefit to standing on the pegs?
Absolutely, look at how enduro/ offroad riders ride in general. Your bike has suspension to absorb the rough terrain you ride over, but it has its limitations. When you stand, your legs, back and arms can absorb shock too. This will give you more control over this kind of terrain. It can be tiring on these big adventure bikes, with all that weight but its still better than sitting. If you go over a harsh bump/ rock while sitting, you could be propelled upwards/ forwards etc, reducing control over the bike.
