Steely Dan - Katy Lied Still like the debut the best. But man, this one has Black Friday. Killer guitar solo from Becker. //Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic //Scorpions - In Trance //Rush - Fly By Night //Budgie - Bandolier //Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow //Styx - Equinox //MTB - Searchin' For A Rainbow //Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin' Fancy //Deep Purple - Come Taste The Band //Steve Hillage - Fish Rising //ZZ Top - Fandango!
PINK FLOYD WISH YOU WERE HERE. Some of Gilmour’s finest playing. Coming after Dark Side the creativity on this album was always going to be up against it. It does not disappoint. I would play this album more often than Dark Side. Matching Gilmour’s is some of Watters finest compositions. Favourites, Welcome to the machine and Have a Cigar- them all really.
Pink floyd was such a great progressive rock band that they would come up in just about any year for favorite albums so long as they released an album in that year.
#20- Queen- A Night at the Opera- amazing songs, musicianship, and of course vocals, and featuring some of their greatest songs, including the iconic "Bohemian Rhapsody."
12) Angel - Angel Angel are one of those bands that nobody talks about although they are quite talented and have made some very good albums. Formed in Washington, DC in 1975 by the original crew of Punky Meadows (guitar), Mickie Jones (bass), Gregg Giuffria (keyboards), Frank DiMino (vocals) and Barry Brandt (drums), the band was discovered by KISS's Gene Simmons at a live show. Simmons convinced the management of Casablanca Records (KISS's label at the time) to sign the band, who made this debut album the same year. The album starts out with its best song, the fantastic "Tower", a heavy Progressive Rock song with a great chorus and a memorable riff that features prominent use of keyboards, synthesizers and effects. Next up is "Long Time", a Progressive Rock song that begins as a ballad, but then turns into a rocker before becoming a ballad again. A precursor to the power ballad, Frank DiMino's vocals on this track are fantastic. "Rock And Rollers" is a pure Rock song with another memorable riff and chorus. These guys know how to write memorable songs with influences from Pop, Progressive Rock and Glam Rock. Another really great song is "Sunday Morning", which once again features heavy use of keyboards and synthesizers. "On And On" is an amazing Rock song that contains yet another amazing chorus. Finally, this fantastic album ends with the short, but epic instrumental, "Angel (Theme)". Angel's self-titled debut is one of the best Hard Rock/Heavy Prog albums of the '70s. Angel really created a masterpiece with this record. 1) Gary Wright - The Dream Weaver 2) Emmylou Harris - Elite Hotel 3) Black Oak Arkansas - Ain't Life Grand 4) Bob Seger - Beautiful Loser 5) ZZ Top - Fandango! 6) Eagles - One Of These Nights 7) Linda Ronstadt - Prisoner In Disguise 8) Neil Young - Zuma 9) Bob Marley & The Wailers - Live! 10) Strawbs - Ghosts 11) Jethro Tull - Minstrel In The Gallery 12) Angel - Angel
@@christophercoles4401 Hi Chris, excellent write-up of this classic: I'm sure you won't be surprised to hear that I will be picking this album later in the month although, given that I'm actually ranking my picks this month, you may be surprised where it ends up on my list!
@@iainhead9898 Yes to ranking! It's not that hard! Everyone had already ranked them in terms of 31 that are better than the hundreds of other albums, so I always say, why not finish the job?
I've been posting my picks on the socials, and when I did this one last week, someone commented that Helluva Band (1976) is actually their peak classic. Not a common opinion, but I'll certainly give it more listens at least before next year's ranking!
Pick 20: Frank Zappa - One Size Fits All Favourite Songs: 1) Inca Roads 2) Sofa, No. 1 3) Andy 20) Frank Zappa - One Size Fits All 21) Jiro Inagaki & His Soul Media - Funky Stuff 22) Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti 23) Stanley Clarke - Journey To Love 24) The Doobie Brothers - Stampede 25) Ambrosia - Self Titled 26) AC/DC - T.N.T 27) Orleans - Let There Be Music 28) The Crusaders - Those Southern Knights 29) Atlanta Rhythm Section - Dog Days 30) The Charlie Daniel’s Band - Nightrider 31) Blood, Sweat & Tears - New City
Day 12: "Venus and Mars" was released by Wings on the Capitol Records label in May of '75. "Medicine Jar" is a real pop hit as is the catchy title track, "'Venus and Mars". A personal favorite is "Letting Go". This planetary-themed LP reached Platinum certification in both the U.K. and the U.S.A. as well as in Canada.
Pick #20: Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow #31: Bad Company's Straight Shooter #30: Steve Hackett's Voyage of the Acolyte #29: Kiss's Alive #28: ZZ Top's Fandango #27: Scorpions' In Trance #26: Hawkwind's Warrior on the Edge of Time #25: Nazareth's Hair of the Dog #24: Eloy's Power and the Passion #23: Renaissance's Scheherazade and Other Stories #22: Doobie Brothers' Stampede #21: Jethro Tull's Minstrel in the Gallery #20: Jeff Beck's Blow by Blow
Day12-Scorpions-In Trance. This is my favorite Uli Roth period Scorpions album. I love the 70’s albums, they are classic sounding, raw and the start of their hard rock sound. Dark Lady a Uli hit,Robot Man,and the title track are my favorite songs from this album. That is my number 12.
My #12 pick is Toys In The Attic-Aerosmith. This album used to be my 2nd favorite Aerosmith album but has been in a free fall the past decade and now ranks behind Rocks, Get Your Wings, Night In The Ruts & Rock In A Hard Place and just ahead of Draw The Line. Side 2 is great but after the title track side 1 bogs down. If Big 10 Inch Record was recorded like the live version it would help some.
Hello Pete and everyone. Today’s choice is from another band who had the difficult task of following up a hugely successful and critically acclaimed album: Supertramp - Crisis? What Crisis? Most people would probably agree that this isn’t quite as good as Crime of the Century. However it is still a high quality album with some excellent songs - my favourites are Sister Moonshine, A Soapbox Opera and Another Man’s Woman. Nos. 11-30 (not ranked) Deep Purple - Come Taste The Band Roxy Music - Siren Kansas - Song For America Foghat - Fool For The City Little Feat - The Last Record Album Wings - Venus And Mars Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow Nils Lofgren - self titled Steely Dan - Katy Lied UFO - Force It Favourite Live Album : Blue Oyster Cult - On Your Feet Or On Your Knees
Day 12 and my choice today is STAMPEDE by THE DOOBIE BROTHERS. The band's 5th album and the last of the original run of the band's albums to feature Tom Johnston playing a full writing and performing role in the band. There are some sonic changes taking place to the band's sound here, greater use of the horn section even on the straight ahead guitar driven rockers and use of strings and orchestral arrangements. The album features the group's usual mixture of styles. Opener, Sweet Maxine and closer Double Dealing Four Flusher with its La Grange type groove are the most muscular rockers here, Whilst I Been Workin' On You is an excellent bluesy riff tune. Rainy Day Crossroad Blues and Texas Lullaby sees the band in their familiar acoustic based country folk groove. Neal's Fandango is a great up tempo piece of country rock that reminds me a little of late 70s Eagles. The rnb side of the band is catered for in the disco tinged Music Man with its orchestral backing and a terrific energetic cover of the old Motown chestnut Take Me In Your Arms. That just leaves Pat Simmons' atmospheric folky ballad I Cheat The Hangman and two instrumentals, the finger picking guitar exercise of Slat Key Sequel Rag and the jazzy fusion full orchestral. Precis, the latter of which is unlike anything the band had attempted before. Very much an album pointing at future directions which would bare fruit on the albums to follow such as Takin' It To The Streets and the multi platinum Grammy nominated Minute by Minute.
A great piece on that great album. The early/earlier albums from so bands are my favourites. Definitely the case with the Doobie Brothers, their first five albums are the best for me with The Captain and Me being the very best. I Cheat the Hangman is absolutely one of their greatest works no doubt about it. Things took a turn for the worst l think with Michael Mcdonald taking over from Tom Johnston, who appeared on all their best albums.
@keithjones6023 I'm. Inclined to agree with you Keith, although I do quite like Takin' It To The Streets, both song and album. The Captain and Me is my favourite to and Pat had this great ability to write these songs with very almost melancholy melodies but very hooky like Toulouse Street track and of course I Cheat The Hangman.
Hi Jerry, wont be adding this on to my list, havent really ever managed to drum up any enthusiasm for these guys when Ive tried them in the past. Admit I havent heard this specifuc album, but not sure if it would change my mind based on your resumè...
20. Foghat - Fool for the City - this album really rocks with two bonafide classics in the title track and Slow Ride, but My Babe is great too 31. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin’ Fancy 30. Hatfield and The North - The Rotters' Club 11. Jefferson Starship - Red Octopus
Day 12 Katy Lied by Steely Dan ABC records. This was the fourth album from the band, thing is Pretzel Logic their third album is one of my top 10 albums of all time with the title track being one of my favourite songs ever. Back to Katy though, not a bad track on it as you'd expect from these guys, for me there isn't quite the variety of songs that some of their other albums offer such as Countdown to Ecstasy or The Royal Scam. Still a wonderful album though and just as enjoyable now as it was when I bought it all those years ago. Black Friday, Doctor Wu Your Gold Teeth ll a few favourite tracks.
Day 12 (#20): Scorpions - In Trance 21. Weather Report - Tale Spinning 22. Return To Forever - No Mystery 23. Aerosmith - Toys In The Attic 24. Electric Light Orchestra - Face The Music 25. Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow 31. Bad Company - Straight Shooter
20. Scorps- In Trance Their third album, but very importantly second album with Uli Jon Roth. He was now firmly established, writing on six of the 10 tunes. And possibly even more importantly, Dieter Dierks begins producing their albums up until 1988. They streamlined their songs, with a great studio sound. The perfect formula for hard rock tones. Always enjoy listening to Klaus's slightly accented English. Try to read up on Dieter's history. He built his studio in his parent's backyard and his mom fed all the musicians who stayed there while recording. The krautrock pioneer.
Day 12: The Outlaws- S/T Favorite songs: There Goes Another Love Song Song In The Breeze Cry No More Waterhole Knoxville Girl Green Grass and High Tides
#20 Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent I'm a late fan of Ted (I started listening to him in the mid-90s). I basically like their albums from the 70s. They have amazing strength and musicality. This debut is incredible. From the opening track (Stranglehold) it shows a jam of more than 8 minutes that blows your mind. My favorite songs are the classics: “Stormtroopin´” and “Motor City Madhouse” Albums That Are 50 Years Old in 2025 #20 Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent #21 Scorpions - In Trance #22 Neil Young - Tonight's the Night / Zuma #23 Steve Hackett - Voyage of the Acolyte #24 Kiss - Dressing to Kill / Alive #25 Patti Smith - Horses #26 AC/DC - TNT #27 Neu! - Neu! 75 #28 Hawkwind - Warrior on the Edge of Time #29 Budgie - Bandolier #30 Steely Dan - Katy Lied #31 Tangerine Dream - Rubycon

In alphabetical order pick #12 Kansas- Masque 1. Aerosmith- Toys In The Attic 2. Angel- s/t (Debut) 3. Bad Company- Straight Shooter 4. Black Sabbath- Sabotage 5. Blue Oyster Cult- On Your Feet or On Your Knees (Live) 6. Alice Cooper- Welcome To My Nightmare 7. Deep Purple- Come Taste The Band 8. Foghat- Fool For The City 9. Heart- Dreamboat Annie 10. Journey- s/t (Debut) 11. Kansas- Song For America 12. Kansas- Masque
Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run (# 7) The one that broke the Boss through to the mainstream Just good old fashioned rollicking rock and roll. Love the keyboards, sax, guitars, and songs…. the essence of the E Street band. Reviewing the setlist of the Wrigley Field show (Chicago, IL) two years ago, 6 of the 8 album songs were played. Jungleland, the title track, and 10th Avenue Freeze Out are my favorites from this classic that still resonates today.
I first heard "Born to Run" in collage. One of my Freshman roomates had it. I thought it was unusual rock music because nothing that I ever listened to up to that point had a sax player up in front so much of the time. The song "Born to Run", hit me as one of the best rock compositions of all time. It turned out that was exactly what Bruce was aiming for when he created it.
@@andymudrock322 Cool perspective. I was only 5 when this one was released, but Springsteen was huge during my high school years. This was already fully planted on classic rock radio. Clarence Clemons is now legendary of course.
# 20 Steely Dan: Katy Lied During this month many others (Pete included) have praised this record and it deserves it. It’s not even in my TOP 3 of Steely Dan albums but still so good that is quite high in my ranking for 1975. # 21 Manfred Mann’s Earth Band: Nightingales and Bombers # 22 Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention: One Size Fits All # 23 Neil Young: Tonight’s the Night # 24 Peter Hammill: Nadir’s Big Chance # 25 Be-Bop Deluxe: Futurama # 26 Tangerine Dream: Rubycon # 27 10cc: The Original Soundtrack # 28 Joni Mitchell: The Hissing of Summer Lawns # 29 Jeff Beck: Blow by Blow # 30 Ted Nugent: Ted Nugent # 31 Supertramp: Crisis? What Crisis?
My number 20: Thin Lizzy, Fighting I have always had and like Live and Dangerous, but never got into the studio albums until last year when i went through my 70s lists. The first few albums i did not like that much. Then came Fighting...
UFO - Force It 20. UFO - Force It 21. Uriah Heep - Return to Fantasy 22. Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow 23. Alice Cooper - Welcome To My Nightmare 24. Tommy Bolin - Teaser 25. Black Oak Arkansas - Ain't Life Grand, and X-Rated 26. Ian Hunter - Ian Hunter 27. Rory Gallagher - Against The Grain 28. Climax Blues Band - Stamp Album 29. Golden Earring - Switch 30. James Gang - Newborn 31. The Kinks - Schoolboys In Disgrace
#20 Rory Gallagher - Against the Grain And Rory went his own way against the grain and followed his own bent. And I was with him all the way. The cover of Deuce(1971) & Live in Europe(1972) showed a guy that I could relate to. He had his Stratocaster with the finish rubbed off…and he was playing it for all it was worth. His style was blues rock played as hard rock or a kind of raunchy jagged attack with in your face runs and picks with slide and vibrato thrown in for good measure. Then I picked up Tattoo(1973) & Irish Tour ‘74(1974) and I loved every tune so much. And the crowd as you can hear on the live album…loved Rory too. He wrote great songs, sang great, and played the hell out of the guitar. He was always at high volume except on acoustic numbers that he occasionally threw on to his albums. He was also a master at the mandolin and harmonica and even a bit of sax. I had wanted to see him live for years but I missed him until 1979. He played The Agora in Atlanta which used to be Alex Cooley’s Electric Ballroom. It was a small club and very intimate. Rory played hard ; and put his foot on the monitor and played even harder. I was watching and listening with my mouth open. As he was leaving the stage for the last time I made eye contact and got a solid handshake from him. It was like he was my brother…and in a way he was. I was a flannel shirt guy too. And I had already seen Page, Blackmore, Iommi, West, Winter, Frampton, Betts, Caldwell and many others play. None of them could match Rory in my mind until I saw Jeff Beck in 1980. So I am very biased when it comes to Rory Gallagher. That said…let me review this album Against the Grain. “Let Me In” is an uptempo rocker with many soloing parts to it. There is even a bit of Chuck Berry. It’s great ! “Cross Me Off Your List” is a typical blues rocker done Rory’s way. It’s so original with a terrific outro. “Ain’t Too Good” is just a very cool tune. Raw at first, but it catches you by the end. Organ adds depth here. “Souped-Up Ford” clocks in at 6:24 with a theme like “Highway Star”. Rory is at his best here with lots of slide guitar. It sort of grabs you too ! “Bought and Sold” is a beautifully written number that is joyously rollicking along. One of the best tunes on the record. You can sing to it. “I Take What I Want”(David Porter Teenie Hodges Isaac Hayes) is a great example of Rory at his raunchy aggressive best. It’s fast and punchy. “Lost At Sea” is a typical ballad that paints a pretty good picture for you. It’s wistful and earnest indeed. “All Around Man”(Bo Carter Rory Gallagher) at 6:14 is a high tone blues rocker with heavy slide elements and powerful singing. “Out on the Western Plain”(Lead Belly arranged by Rory Gallagher) is an acoustic song that features “ki yi yikki yikki yea” country style singing. It’s a tip of the cap to America of the past. It’s very engaging and sweet. “At the Bottom” is a magnificent song. Maybe the best on the album. The solo is full of echo at extremely high volume that is powerful and elegant at the same time. Fine drum rolls punctuate this beautiful song. Band members are Gerry McAvoy on bass, Lou Martin on organ & electric piano & Rod de’Ath on drums and percussion. Rory started as a three piece blues band. And in a couple of years he would abandon keyboards and go back to a trio. Great albums in that format are Photo-Finish(1978) and Top Priority(1979). (With McAvoy on bass and Ted McKenna on drums.) It was a great personal loss for me when Rory died in 1995. I loved the guy more than any other musician. You can hear how nice and polite he was on the live albums between the songs. “Thank You Very Much Indeed” was one of his favorite sayings. He came off to me as unpretentious and sincere in everything he did. Against the Grain is a solid record fully representative of the great Rory Gallagher. Well…I like it !!! #20 Rory Gallagher - Against the Grain #21 Alice Cooper - Welcome to my Nightmare #22 UFO - Force It #23 Steely Dan - Katy Lied #24 Bad Company - Straight Shooter #25 Thin Lizzy - Fighting #26 Nazareth - Hair of the Dog #27 Marshall Tucker Band - Searchin’ For A Rainbow #28 Angel - Angel #29 Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent #30 Queen - A Night at the Opera #31 Rush - Fly By Night
Hey Richard. Another outstanding write-up about a truly amazing musician. I always thought that Rory Gallagher seemed like a very down to earth humble guy who just loved playing music. I was fortunate enough to get to see him live at the Tower Theater in Philly, and even though he blew the doors off the joint, there wasn't even a hint of "Rock star" attitude about him. He could've just been a guy playing his guitar in a neighborhood bar. I always remembered and appreciated his lack of pretense as much as his stellar musicianship.
20. Electric Light Orchestra - Face The Music It's funny to think about the time when I started buying some albums from 1975, they were five years old, which seemed like a long-ass time when I was ten. ELO was the first, as I had started working backwards from Out of the Blue. This album seemed to be before they finally clicked with their signature sound on A New World Record (1976). In fact, it's a step back from the orchestral majesty that was Eldorado (1974), going intentionally for a more stripped-back rock approach. And it works pretty dang well, as they judiciously accent certain moments with strings, like the eerie intro to the instrumental "Fire on High" which goes from theatrical horror to prog to a raging rocker. "Nightrider" and "Poker" keep the energy up, while "Evil Woman" has a subtle funk groove that deservingly pushed it up the singles charts. "Down Home Town" foreshadows Jeff Lynne's Americana obsession and is charming enough, while "Strange Magic" and "One Summer Dream" are lovely and ethereal, the latter stretching out nearly six minutes as the album's longest track. Symphonic Rock, Pop Rock, Art Rock, Prog Pop | RYM #130 | AOTY #97
20. Fish Rising by Steve Hillage Choice cuts: "Solar Musick Suite," "The Salmon Song" 21. Handsome by Kilburn and the High Roads 22. Made in Germany by Amon Düül II 23. Circus by Argent 24. Power and the Passion by Eloy 25. Black Eyed Bruiser by Stevie Wright 26. Brown Rice by Don Cherry 27. The Original Soundtrack by 10cc 28. Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin 29. Bolan's Zip Gun by T. Rex 30. Extra Texture (Read All About It) by George Harrison 31. Mental Notes by Split Enz
Day 12: Jane - Lady. Another German band coming from Hannover, where also the Scorpions and Eloy were from. They always had great keyboard playing and very melodic guitar soloing from founding member Klaus Hess. Top song on this album for me is Lord Love, a brilliant slow builder with great organ and guitar work.
Hi Pete sorry I forgot yesterday to reply , my pick for yesterday Physical Graffiti by Led Zepplin. Today's pick is Pink Floyd's Wish you Were Here. A follow up to a masterpiece of an album Dark Side Of The Moon in 1973.

Hi everyone, hope all our weekends have gone well. Coming in at #20 on my list is an album that, whe I first heard it, left me very disappointed, but which, many years later, I grew to appreciate a lot more. Their previous album had seen a move away from their signature sound, to the point where the band's guitarist and main songwriter parted company with them for this album, to be replaced by an up and coming young American whe was, at the time, clearly destined fir greatness. His name was Tommy Bolin and, of course, my pick for today is... DEEP PURPLE "Come Taste The Band" Losing someone like Richie Blackmore might have stopped a lot of bands in their tracks, but Purple decided to carry on, stalwarts Ian Paice and Jon Lord, newish singer David Coverdale and even newer bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes bringing in Bolin for this album that sees the band's traditional classic rock sound becoming noticeably influenced by Coverdale's soulful side and Hughes' funkier side (already in plentiful evidence on previous album Stormbringer), to the point where many don't really think of this as a "proper" Deep Purple album. Whichever side of the fence you sit on, and whatever you think they should have been called instead, when you invest time in the album and listen to it on its own merits, without crying that it doesn't sound like In Rock, or even Burn, then there's plenty to like. Rollicking opener Coming Home is certainly a statement of hard rocking intent, Bolin's riff and solo both incendiary, and the follow up Lady Luck let's Coverdale shine too. Then you get Gettin' Tighter, where Hughes takes lead vocal duty and also layers on the funk, bringing a Trapeze feel to proceedings. I won't go track by track, but I will highlight Drifter and album closer and single You Keep On Moving, where Cov and Glenn share lead vocals. Not my favourite DP album, but probably the most underrated/under-appreciated one in their catalogue.
Hey Iain. Nice write-up. I knew you'd be getting around to picking this album eventually. I have it as an honorable mention simply because January has only 31 days.
Hey Iain, fantastic pick and album review! Love this album, my two favourite tracks, Lady Luck and I Need Love totally prefigure what Coverdale would do later with Whitesnake.
Dear merciful God in Heaven Iain! Don't read my post today! I hope it's a nice day in Jolly Old to go fishing or on a picnic or ANYTHING other that look at today's Battle Royale!

Pick 20 is Wire Fire by Savoy Brown led by Kim Simmonds. Best songs are Stranger Blues. OOH What A Feeling. Deep Water. Here Comes The Music and my favorite off the album. Born Into Pain.
Thanks kev i always liked them but they did change personnel a lot and their music changed a little in the late 70s early 80s. They went from all blues. To blues rock to a little hard rock and back to blues rock for the last 20 or so years.
Great album as i use to have it. Good tracks on Wire Fire. I miss Kim . Got to see Kim and Savoy Brown in 2007 small club. For the $15 he put on a great blues and rockin show. Last song was Hellbound Train. I met Kim after the show and had a small exchange chat of music, He signed the back of my ticket. TC Dennis.

Hi Pete & everyone. Dave here. My pick today is a little left-field. It's THAT'S THE WAY OF THE WORLD by EARTH, WIND & FIRE. Got into this band in the late 70s, and saw them live at that time (so theatrical). And thanks to the record library at my place of work, i discovered this and other earlier albums. I love their brand of funk, soul, jazz, and world music, with some excellent instrumental passages and their three vocalists (especially the falsetto Philip Bailey). Shining Star, Reasons and the title track are pure class.
@@gaiaeternal5131 Great article Dave about a terrific band. They didn't just know how to groove or get people dancing they knew how to write a great melodic hook too.
Good pick, Pete! My number 20 Hatfield and the North - The Rotters’ Club Hatfield and the North, one of the later band on the Canterbury scene, masterfully weaves jazzy improvisation, progressive structures and playful melodies into a soundscape on The Rotter's Club that is both sophisticated and accessible. Despite its experimental nature, The Rotter's Club remains engaging and offers a perfect balance of progressive rock and the laid-back atmosphere that is so typical of Canterbury. 21 Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery 22 Brian Eno - Another Green World 23 Soft Machine - Bundles 24 Return to Forever featuring Chick Corea - No Mystery 25 Sloche - J'un Oeil 26 Passport - Cross-Collateral 27 Herbie Hancock - Man-Child 28 Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow - Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow 29 Roxy Music - Siren 30 Neil Merryweather - Krypronite 31 Aerosmith - Toys in the Attic
My Day 12 pick is an album released on March 19, 1975, and recorded in February 8 - 18, 1975 at Electric Lady, New York City and produced by Neil Bogart and the band im talking about the third studio album by American hard rock band Kiss Dressed to Kill. Possibly due to the short length of the album, original vinyl versions had long pauses between each track to make the sides longer than they would be based on the material they had. Each side ran just 15 minutes, and some of the song times were listed incorrectly on the vinyl versions. For example, "Two Timer" was listed at 2:59 and "Ladies in Waiting" was listed at 2:47. The album cover was photographed on October 26, 1974 by Bob Gruen.[3] While the cover depicts Kiss in business suits, the only member of the band who owned one was Peter Criss. The suits worn on the cover by the rest of the band were owned by manager Bill Aucoin.[2] The original vinyl release of the album also had the Kiss logo embossed around the picture. The photograph of the band on the album cover was taken on the southwest corner of W23rd Street and 8th Avenue looking North in New York City. A remastered edition of Dressed to Kill was released in 1997. Track listing edit All credits adapted from the original release.[20] Side one No. Title Writer(s) Lead vocals Length 1. Day 12. Frankie Valli - Close Up. 😃👍. Released in February 1975. This is a little forgotten gem from 1975. It does contain the hits “My Eyes Adored You” and “Swearin’ To God,” but it is much more to the history of popular music. Amazingly, Frankie Valli had three albums in 1975, two on Private Stock and one on Motown. This album is beautiful at times (“In My Eyes”) and at other times crackles with a disco beat to Mr. Valli’s sparking voice (“I Can’t Live A Dream”). Frankie Valli is an American Treasure. I just had to list one of these three albums from 1975. 🔥. Rock Always! - Heather
@@the80slivehere Hi Heather, interesting choice. Can't claim to be a huge Frankie Valli fan, but I've always enjoyed hus hits with the 4 Seasons and I particularly like Ready Now. Just a great feelgood tune. I should definitely check out more of his songs.
Hi Heather. The hits from this album from Frankie were monumental and would like when hearing on radio back in the day. And with him before with The 4 Seasons have the greatest hits double sets of great 4 Seasons songs. TC friend and stay well.
Alice always surrounded himself with great musicians, and getting Wagner and Hunter for this album and tour put his band up there with a great twin guitar attack.
My favorite albums turning 50. In no particular order: Day 12 Steely Dan - Katy Lied For some reason when I listen to this album, I want to kick back and smoke a cigar and drink whiskey. Funny thing is l don't partake in either one. lol My Favorite tracks: “Black Friday” “Bad Sneakers” “Doctor Wu” Day 12: Steely Dan - Katy Lied Day 11: Kansas - Song For America Day 10: Eagles - One Of These Nights Day 9: Gary Wright - The Dream Weaver Day 8: Foghat - Fool For the City Day 7: Styx - Equinox Day 6: ELO - Face the Music Day 5: Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks Day 4: Jethro Tull - Minstrel in the Gallery Day 3: Nazareth - Hair of the Dog Day 2: Angel - Angel Day 1: David Bowie - Young Americans
My pick for today is Wayne Shorter Featuring Milton Nascimento - Native Dancer. A wonderful collaboration between two musical giants, The Weather Report saxophone player and the great Brazilian composer and singer, including big names like Herbie Hancock on piano and Airto Moreira on percussion. This is a unique blend of Jazz Fusion with elements of Funk and infectious Latin Rhythms. Favorites are 'Ponta De Areia' covered by Earth Wind And Fire, 'Beauty And The Beast' 'Miracle Of The Fishes' 'From The Lonely Afternoons' and 'Tarde'.
Today my pick #20 is Rush Caress of Steel. Underrated album imo, my favorites are Bastille day, lakeside park, start to finish a solid album. 20. Rush- Caress of Steel 21. The Who- Who by numbers 27. ELO- Face the music 28. Bob Seger- Beautiful Loser 29. Foghat- Fool for the city 30. Ted Nugent- self titled debut 31. BTO- Head on
My pick today is a live album, Maximum Darkness by Man, which was recorded in 1975 at The Roundhouse in London. Features Quicksilver Messenger Service’s John Cippolina as a guest guitarist. Includes some Man live favourites, such as Many Are Called But Few Get Up and Bananas.
Today I'm going for the wonderful Gryphon, with their 1975 release 'Raindance'. The previous album 'Red Queen to Gryphon 3' epitomised their style, which we might describe as mediaeval progressive rock. 'Raindance' moved somewhat away from that style to more straightforward rock, but still very inventive. Well worth a listen. 1. Ambrosia - Ambrosia 2. Barclay James Harvest - Time Honoured Ghosts 3. Be-Bop Deluxe - Futurama 4. Camel - The Snow Goose 5. Caravan - Cunning Stunts 6. Clannad - Clannad 2 7. The Doobie Brothers - Stampede 8. Eagles - One of These Nights 9. Electric Light Orchestra - Face the Music 10. Fleetwood Mac - Fleetwood Mac 11. Focus - Mother Focus 12. Gryphon - Raindance
Day 12. Merle Haggard - Keep Movin' On No one can spin a story like Merle Haggard. The man has written a ton of classics in country music that are revered and copied to this day, and this album has its memorable tunes too. Merle is for the die-hard country music fan and not the plastic stereotype tripe of today. 1. Miles Davis - Agharta 2. The Dictators - Go Girl Crazy! 3. Larry Coryell and 11th House - Level One 4. Elf - Trying To Burn The Sun 5. Jim Hall - Concierto 6. Grateful Dead - Blues for Allah 7. Rahsaan Roland Kirk - The Case of the 3 Sided Dream in Audio Color 8. Clifton Chenier - Bogalusa Boogie 9. The Meters - Fire on the Bayou 10. Herbie Hancock - Man-Child 11. Average White Band - Cut the Cake 12. Merle Haggard - Keep Movin' On
Day 12: The Brecker Bros Day 11: Billy Cobham - Shabazz Day 10: Chris Squire - Fish Out Of Water Day 9: Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here Day 8: Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow Day 7: Weather Report - Tale Spinnin' Day 6: Soft Machine - Bundles Day 5: Steve Hackett - Voyage Of The Acolyte Day 4: King Crimson - USA Day 3: Return To Forever - No Mystery Day 2: Mahavishnu Orchestra - Visions Of The Emerald Beyond Day 1: Rush - Fly By Night
Day 12: a comeback album after a four year hiatus. VDGG- Godbluff. So many can't get into them, don't like Hammill's voice, or the discord, or the saxes, but for me, they always appealed (though I admit Hamill is no Greg Lake), lyrically, thematically. And I think time has been much kinder to VDGG (and Gentle Giant) than ELP. But this is a different beat to the previous albums. Self-produced, more guitar, clavinet and the strength of the songwriting always impresses. Banton never gets the credit he's due, but this clocks in just under 38 mins, 4 tracks that wreak havoc on your sense of melody and harmony. Easily qualifies for this assignment
Alice Cooper is another great pick and you have a better job finding 50 year old albums than i am and Welcome to my Nightmare is awesome thanks Pete. 🎶🎶📻🎶🎶
#20. NILS LOFGREN - Nils Lofgren 21. DION - Born To Be With You 22. ZZ TOP - Fandango 23. ROXY MUSIC - Siren 24. RON WOOD - Now Look 25. BOB CARPENTER - Silent Passage 26. 12) Angel - Angel
Angel are one of those bands that nobody talks about although they are quite talented and have made some very good albums.

Excellent choice, article, and song picks, Bryan. A fantastic list
@@melaniethurber5117 Thank you so much, Melanie.

Their third album, but very importantly second album with Uli Jon Roth.

#20 Ted Nugent - Ted Nugent
I'm a late fan of Ted (I started listening to him in the mid-90s). I basically like their albums from the 70s. They have amazing strength and musicality. This debut is incredible. From the opening track (Stranglehold) it shows a jam of more than 8 minutes that blows your mind. My favorite songs are the classics: “Stormtroopin´” and “Motor City Madhouse”

Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run (# 7)
The one that broke the Boss through to the mainstream Just good old fashioned rollicking rock and roll.
Fantastic pick. I also listed this great classic.
@@andymudrock322 Cool perspective. I was only 5 when this one was released, but Springsteen was huge during my high school years. This was already fully planted on classic rock radio. Clarence Clemons is now legendary of course.

#20 Rory Gallagher - Against the Grain
And Rory went his own way against the grain and followed his own bent.
(With McAvoy on bass and Ted McKenna on drums.)
It was a great personal loss for me when Rory died in 1995.

Great pick and write up Richard. My favorite from Rory. Saw him live in 1976.
Spectacular right up RB, You've got me convinced I got to try him again. Haven't listened to him in 40 years.

20. Electric Light Orchestra - Face The Music
It's funny to think about the time when I started buying some albums from 1975, they were five years old, which seemed like a long-ass time when I was ten.

DEEP PURPLE "Come Taste The Band"
Losing someone like Richie Blackmore might have stopped a lot of bands in their tracks, but Purple decided to carry on, stalwarts Ian Paice and Jon Lord, newish singer David Coverdale and even newer bassist/vocalist Glenn Hughes bringing in Bolin for this album that sees the band's traditional classic rock sound becoming noticeably influenced by Coverdale's soulful side and Hughes' funkier side (already in plentiful evidence on previous album Stormbringer), to the point where many don't really think of this as a "proper" Deep Purple album.

Great Pick.
My Day 12 pick is an album released on March 19, 1975, and recorded in February 8 - 18, 1975 at
Electric Lady, New York City and produced by Neil Bogart and the band im talking about the third studio album by American hard rock band Kiss Dressed to Kill.

Day 12 brings a Southern Rock beauty: The Marshall Tucker Band - Searchin' For A Rainbow
Not much to add to all the praise for the album one can read elsewhere. Lovely songs like Fire On The Mountain, title track and Can't You See (available in a live version on this disk) are among the best the Caldwell brothers and band have released. Go for it!
Great pick and story Albert
Hey everyone was pretty busy today so I'm just gonna put my picks for day 11 and 12 on here... plus its 2 albums from the same band so you get a 2 for 1 deal from me today!
I'm going with American Prog Rock giants Kansas today with their 2nd and 3rd releases Song For America and Masque! So many highlights on these 2 albums to me some of their most fantastic work... Incomudro Icarus Child of Innocence Lamplight Symphony and the epic Mysteries and Mayhem segueing into The Pinnacle... just masterworks of progressive rock!

Ok Mel. You got it 👍💯

Hi Heather, not really my thing, but definitely a pioneer in his field.
Hi Heather. The hits from this album from Frankie were monumental and would like when hearing on radio back in the day. And with him before with The 4 Seasons have the greatest hits double sets of great 4 Seasons songs. TC friend and stay well.

This sounds great Danny

My pick today is a live album, Maximum Darkness by Man, which was recorded in 1975 at The Roundhouse in London. Features Quicksilver Messenger Service’s John Cippolina as a guest guitarist. Includes some Man live favourites, such as Many Are Called But Few Get Up and Bananas.
What a good choice. Love Man. Son of Man are not that bad either, if you haven’t heard them well worth a listen.

Hi Pete. Good pick In Alice Cooper. Here is my pick for day 12.
Pick # 20 - Tommy Bolin - Teaser
Today I'm going for the wonderful Gryphon, with their 1975 release 'Raindance'. The previous album 'Red Queen to Gryphon 3' epitomised their style, which we might describe as mediaeval progressive rock. 'Raindance' moved somewhat away from that style to more straightforward rock, but still very inventive. Well worth a listen.

Day 12. Merle Haggard - Keep Movin' On No one can spin a story like Merle Haggard. My #12: Rod Stewart - Atlantic Crossing
Day 12. My pick is Welcome To My Nightmare by Alice Cooper.
Pete covers this pretty conclusively above, so I'll say no more.
Nice write up, and I agree a strong VDGG album, possibly their best?
Keith Jarrett The Koln Concert. Best selling piano album of all time, and not even his best!
Simply sublime.
Day 12- My 20th favourite album, I'm going with Kansas Masque
